The next morning, Jack was woken up by Madam Pomfery who started with making sure he was perfectly alright.
"Everything seems fine." she said after checking him over a few times "When you're ready you may leave to start your day. However if you still feel unwell, come back here at break."
Nodding, and yawning a little Jack waited until she was gone before he got undressed and changed into his uniform.
Slowly he went down to the Great Hall, hoping Harry and/or Ron would bring his bag down with them for him.
As he entered the Hall, he could see Malfoy obviously making a fool of himself by pretending to faint and calling out to Harry who had just sat down on the other side of the hall on the Gryffindor table.
A little too tired and hungry to care about Malfoy at this exact moment, Jack went to join his friends and was immediately hug-attacked by Annie and Elisa who was there with them seeming to be looking for him.
"Annie... Can't breathe..." he said gasping as she let him go with a few quick 'Sorry's' .
"How are you feeling Jack?" Elisa said gently, helping herself to some pancakes.
"Better than last night I'll give you that," Jack admitted pouring himself some cereal "What's Draco doing anyway?" he asked looking over his shoulder as another roar of laughter came from his Slytherin posy "Practising for a mid-winter play or something? I didn't know Hogwarts did that?"
This got a few laughs from the Gryffindor's around him that could hear him, and thankfully it got the Snakes to be quiet for the rest of breakfast.
In answer to Jacks question, Harry told him that Malfoy seemed to have heard that he had collapsed due to the Dementor last night on the train.
"And being the spoiled rich boy git that he is he wants to rub it in your face, right?" Jack asked knowing these kinds of people very well.
"Pretty much." Harry said looking at his new year's timetable.
"That little git," George said calmly looking over his shoulder at said boy "He wasn't so cocky last night when the Dementors were at our end of the train. Came running into our compartment, didn't he Fred?"
"Nearly wet himself," said Fred nodding in agreement.
"Mind you I wasn't too happy myself. Horrible things those Dementors" George said passing Jack his new year's timetable.
"Sort of freeze you up from the inside, don't they?" said Fred.
"Not really," Jack said without thinking "When that happens, first you feel cold, but then you feel warm as your body tried to send out more blood to help warm up the more important parts, such as your lungs, your heart, your brain. That's why most Eskimos caught out in the snow, or people who have fallen into freezing water, are more likely to loose toes or fingers." he paused to get his breath "With them... even I felt cold and I shouldn't be able to do that. And they made me relive things I wish would have stayed berried."
"Yeah and you didn't pass out though did you?" Harry added glumly.
"Well, no." Fred admitted.
"Forget it you two." George said bracingly. "Dad had to go to Azkaban one time, remember, Fred?"
"I didn't know you had a criminal for a father," Elisa said giving a small smile trying to lighten the mood.
"We don't," George said, then put on a thinking face "Well, as far as we know anyway. No, he went there on Ministry of Magic business. He said it was the worst place he'd ever been. Came back all weak and shaking... Those Dementors, they suck all the happiness... out of the place..." he said slowly in a thinking voice as the Twins turned to Jack.
Feeling he was being watched Jack mumbled "I don't wanna talk about it."
"Besides he's probably just trying to get some teasing and pickings-on-you in before you smash him in your first Quidditch match." Elisa said smiling finishing up and looking at her own timetable. "Well I have to go, I've got Ancient Runes first and that's on the 6th floor. See you later."
And she was gone.
"She's right you know," Fred said calmly "About the Quiddich thing. Remember last year?"
Grinning a little Jack nodded remembering full-well what happened last year, going as far as rubbing the part of the ribs where Dobby the House Elf's rouge Bludger hit him.
"Oh good," Hermione's voice said happily as she read her timetable "We're starting some new subjects today."
As Ron was questioning Hermione about her criss-crossing subjects, the post arrived and Academies, Jack's owl came over to him with a large basket of chocolate (bars and eggs) and a letter questioning if he was alright, carried by a very worried Baby Tooth who was whizzing and squeaking around him worried.
"Baby Tooth." Jack said trying to calm her down "Baby – Baby Tooth." he said firmly, gently catching her in cupped hands "I'm fine. Ok? I had chocolate as soon as I woke up last night on the train. And some more at dinner when I had been seen by Madam Pomfery, and spent the night in the Hospital Wing. I am fine. Ok?"
Calming down a little, blushing at the fuss she made, Baby Tooth nodded and Jack let her go.
Once she was free, she flew down to the letter and gave it to him any way squeaking anyway, Jack taking to mean that the Guardians would want a reply in his own words what happened and that he was indeed alright.
"Fine I'll write them a letter after breakfast, during my free period," Jack said crossing his heart to show he meant it, and then helping himself to one of the mini eggs.
"Jack," Percy said from where he sat "Chocolate is not meant to be eaten for breakfast."
"Oh shut up Percy," George said asking and stashing some bars into his back, Fred doing the same.
Just then Hagrid came over smiling down at them, addressing the Third Years more than the others.
"Yer in my firs' ever lesson. Right after lunch!" he said happily "Bin up since five gettin' everythin' ready... hope it's ok... me a teacher... hones'ly..."
"Well you deserve it Hagrid." Jack said smiling and helping himself to some more toast.
"Bah, thanks Jack" Hagrid said patting him on the shoulder and carried on towards the Teacher's table.
"I wonder just what exactly he has been getting ready," Hermione said a little worried.
"Well knowing him," Jack said getting up "Probably something big and dangerous."
"He wouldn't do that he's a teacher," Annie said looking over to Hagrid at the Teacher's table.
"Yes, he is a teacher" Jack said nodding "But he's also a Teacher who has, somewhere, a pet Cerberus, and a pet giant Acromantula who has it's on giant, giant family in the Forbidden Forest. Face it you lot, Hagrid has a good heart and everything, but he's just a little out of it when it comes to what kinds of creatures are safe for children and teenagers to be around and study."
With that he took the basket and its remaining chocolates and, with Archimedes on his shoulder and Baby Tooth beside him, went up to the dormitory to spend the first hour of his new year there, writing the letter to the Guardians and maybe play some comes with Baby Tooth.
