One hour and a bit later Jack was waiting outside the Transfiguration classroom, yawning a little from his nap he decided to take after he had finished the letter.
Checking his watch and looking up and down the corridor, he started to wonder where the rest of the Third Year Gryffindor's were, as it was getting very close the start of the lesson.
One minute to go, and they finally arrived, coming down the corridor and lining up against the wall waiting for Professor McGonagall to let them in, most of them looking towards Harry with worried faces.
"Great," Jack said under his breath "What's the rumour this year then?"
Just then the door opened and they went inside taking the seats they had last year, and the year before.
Because it was Professor McGonagall who was teaching, Jack and Harry didn't try to risk talking to each other, and instead listened to what she had to say about Animagi.
"Animagi and witches and wizards who can transform themselves into animals at will." she said using her wand to make the chalk write this down on the black boad. "To become one, first they need to take a potion to find out exactly what animal their form, or sometimes forms, are, so they can focus on becoming it. Once they have mastered it, Wizard Law states that they need to confirm with the Ministry that they are indeed Animagi and what their form is along with their marking so they cannot take advantage of their form."
She said turning around to the class, as though she had said it every year, trying to point out those who might 'forget' about this law.
"However once that is done, they can change into their forms and back as often as they please. Like so..."
With that she changed into her tabby-cat-with-spectical-shaped-markings-around-its-eyes form and sat on her desk looking proud.
Jack, surprised and excited to learn how to do this himself clapped happily but stopped quickly when he noticed he was the only one clapping.
Noticing this too, McGonagall changed back and spoke openly off subject to the class.
"Really what is wrong with you all today?" she said looking around "Not that it matters but that's the first time my transformation hasn't had the whole class clapping in excitement."
Jack smirked at this a little knowing that if someone says 'Not that it matters' it really does matter.
Slowly Hermione put up her hand.
"Please Professor. We were just in Divination –"
"I wasn't!" Jack called out but shut up quickly when he got a look from the teacher.
"And we were reading the tea leaves and -"
"Ah, of course," Professor McGonagall said sighing "There is need to say anymore Miss Granger. Tell me, which of you will be dying this year?"
"What?!" Jack asked blinking in surprise and turning around to face the rest of the class.
"Me." Harry said sitting up a little straighter.
"I see," Professor McGonagall said locking onto Harry with her eyes "Then you should know, Potter, that for as long as Professor Tralawny has been here, she has been predicting the death of one student each year and none have been known to have died yet. Seeing death omens is her way of welcoming a new class, however ridiculous it might be..." McGonagall said pausing to calm herself down. Then more calmly she continued "Divination is one of the most imprecise branches of magic. I shall not conceal from you that I have very little patience with it. True Seers are very rare, and Professor Trelawney..." she paused again.
"You need to be born a Seer don't you Professor?" Jack asked sticking up his hand "You can't learn how to become one. You either have the gift or you don't."
"Correct Frost." Professor McGonagall said nodding and giving a small smile pleased that someone understood what the she has been trying to say for the last 13 years. Turning back to Harry she finished her 'speech' "You look in excellent health to me, Potter, so you will excuse me if I don't let you off homework today. I assure you, if you do die, you need not hand it in."
Harry and Jack both laughed at this while the rest of the class still looked unsure, although Harry did seem a little happier.
Behind them, Jack could hear Lavender Brown whisper to Pavarti "But what about Neville's cup?"
With that the lesson continued and they started taking notes on Animagi, starting with the Wizarding Laws that came with being one.

When the class with finished Harry, Ron, Hermione and Jack all joined everyone else as they made it down to the Great Hall for lunch.
"Oh Ron cheer up," said Hermione, pushing a dish of stew towards him. "You heard what Professor McGonagall said."
Ron spooned some stew onto his plate, but didn't start.
Seeing this Jack said "I suggest you head to the Hospital Wing Ron. You must be sick if you're deliberately not eating anything that's within arm's reach from you."
Ignoring Jack, Ron turn to Harry and asked if he has actually seen any big black dogs anywhere.
"Not that I know of, well not recently at least," Harry said, thinking the book in Flush and Blots doesn't count "I think there was one when I was still with my parents but I can't remember."
"Are you sure?" Ron asked "You sure how haven't seen one in the last few weeks? What about that night you left the Dursley's?"
"There might have been something, but I wasn't really paying attention and I was a little worried about possibly being expelled for doing magic outside of school. So sorry for not paying better attention to my surrounding and any beings that there might have been watching me."
That made Ron back off a little, but he was still didn't seem happy.
"Not all big black dogs are Grim's you know Ronald," Jack said rolling his eyes and helping himself to some ham sandwiches.
"Yeah some can just be strays," Hermione said pulling out her Arithmancy book and opened it to a marked page.
"Oh yeah?" Ron asked looking at them "Well my Uncle Billius saw one and he died 24 hours later."
"Coincidence," Hermione said shrugging as she pouring herself some pumpkin juice, before propping her book against the jug "If you ask me Divination is a waste of time and a subject as a whole and in the school Curriculum. Very woolly and a lot of guess work. Nothing useful about it at all."
"There was nothing 'woolly' about that Grim at the bottom of that cup." Ron said firmly.
"You didn't seem so confident when you were calling it a sheep," Hermione fired back.
Rolling his eyes Jack tuned them out and looked around the room finding Professor Lupin at the teachers table in his shabby clothes and using gold cutlery and cups instead of silver.
This got Jack to look along his table and then over his shoulder at the Hufflepuff's seeing everything there was silver as it was a normal day and not a special occasion.
He was about to point this out to the others when Hermione slammed her book down and said: "If being good at Divination means I have to pretend to see death omens in a bunch of stupid tea leaves, I'm not sure I'll be studying it much longer! That lesson was absolutely rubbish compared to my Arithmancy class!"
With that she snatched up her things and left.
Ron frowned and watched her go.
"What is she talking about?" he asked to no one in particular "She hasn't been to an Arithmancy class yet.
"Well maybe she has and hasn't told you about it," Jack said getting back to his food "Girls do like to keep secrets you know Ronald."
"I know, but she couldn't have because she was with us all morning." Ron said trying to argue, finally getting started on his lunch.
"Maybe it was a Changeling instead of her and they swapped back just before we came into here," Jack said shrugging. "Or maybe she has an identical twin sister that's just as smart and bossy as she is."
"Changelings, going by what stories you go by, only go for babies Jack," a calm dreamy voice said making them look up to see Luna Lovegood "Meaning she's not one, or she is and has always been one."
"What do you mean by 'going by what stories you go by'?" Harry asked curious.
"Well," Luna said sitting down next to Jack and letting Baby Tooth play with her hair "European Changelings swap out babies so they can grow and infiltrate our world and take over everywhere with powerful humans in them, such as the Minstery or Parliament or the government."
Jack gave a little snort at this loving the looks on Ron and Harry's faces.
"But American Changelings, while also swapping out babies, also swap out grownups and teenagers, and have no hearts so they feed off of the love said person they swapped out with is supposed to be getting instead. If they don't get enough love they get sick and lose their power. So they only do it to survive. Even if what they're doing is bad."
As she finished Harry and Ron were both staring at her.
One with a look that said 'There are really creatures in the world that do that?' and one wearing a look that cried out a mix of 'Are you crazy?' insults.
At that point Jack checked his watch and said it was time to be getting to their first Care of Magical Creatures lesson.
"See you later Luna" he said once Baby Tooth had come back to him.
"Bye Jack." she said waving and leaving too.
With that the boys all together went outside, Ron going on about the conversation they just had, although neither Jack nor Harry were really listening.
Sorry if the back end seems a bit rushed, i put it together last minute when i saw the 'imaginary deadline' for me updating this was coming up.
Either way hope you like it.
Oh and the 'Changelings' Luna is focusing on are the ones from Trollhunters and My Little Pony
