Surprised, Jack looked up and stared at the man before him looking for a grin to prove this was a laugh, but then, thinking back, Jack nodded and said "I thought he was."
"You knew?" Sirius asked a little surprised.
"Well not 'knew' but I worked out." Jack said shrugging a bit "The fact he doesn't touch silver, the fact he gets sick and goes missing every month as it gets close to the full moon, his enhanced hearing, etcetera... etcetera... So," he paused turning to a new page in his notebook "How did you become a dog?"
Sighing Sirius started telling the story, Jack making notes ever few sentences and asking questions here and there.
They were almost done, when Dinky popped back and said "Master Sirius, Hogwarts is not safe for you now, Headmaster put school in lockdown because you are here. You need to leave. And Sir," she said turning to Jack "Headmaster has asked all students to sleep in the Great Hall tonight."
"Ok Dinky," Jack said getting up and looking at the time, not realising how late it was then asked Sirius "If the school is in lockdown how are you to leave?"
"How far away are we from the one-eyed-witch at the top of the stairs to the Transfiguration corridor?"
"Not that far, I guess, why?" Jack asked following the man and going on ahead as they rounded corners to check if it was safe.
Once they got there Sirius told Jack to tap his wand on the witch's hump and say 'Descendium'
Curious, Jack did this and to his surprise the hump opened up and Jack saw a slide and possibly a tunnel.
"Where's it go?" Jack asked before Sirius could go down it.
"To the Honeyduke's basement in Hogsmeade," Sirius said climbing up "I'll stay in the tunnel until morning then leave the shop once they open up and head for the Shack. That place is dustier, but less people go there, and there's another tunnel that comes up at the base of the Whomping Willow so I can come back once everything is calmed down."
"Right," Jack said nodding trying to not let his curiosity over take him and follow Sirius down the tunnel.
"Look out for Harry, and keep that rat away from him," Sirius said before sliding down the slide, transforming and running down the tunnel, just as the hump closed.
After a moment of silence, Jack headed back down the stairs to the Great Hall, bumping into a mix of Hufflepuff's and Ravenclaw's as he neared the door.
"Jack!" Elisa said spotting him and making her way over "Do you know what's going on? All Professor Flitwick said was that everyone had to return to the Great Hall."
"Sirius Black is said to be inside the castle," Jack said calmly "Attacked the Fat Lady because she wouldn't let him in to the Gryffindor common room."
"*Gasp*! You think he was after Harry?" she asked as they got to the Hall and 'listened' to Dumbledore as he explained the situation.
"He was definitely after something, because he got really mad when the Fat Lady wouldn't let him in." Jack said as they waited in line to each get a squishy purple sleeping bag.
"It sounds to me that you were there when he did it," Elisa said in a - I'm sussing you out -voice.
"Well maybe I heard something, but he was gone by the time I got there," Jack said lying down and looking up at the ceiling that reflected the night sky outside.
Just then Annie came over and set up her sleeping bag beside Elisa.
"Just like camping hey guys?" she said smiling a little too much.
"Something wrong Annie?" Jack asked sitting up a little.
"I'mfine!" Annie said quickly and scooted over to her sister a little more.
"She's afraid of the dark," Elisa explained to Jack in a whisper as she petted Annie's head "So when we were younger, Mum her a bedtime-buddy to help keep the monsters away..."
"And because we're down here, she doesn't have it." Jack said in understanding. "Well you can always hug me instead." he said to Annie "I'm pretty good and fighting of monsters and nightmares."
To his surprise, Annie shook her head "Elisa's better. She used to beat up bullies who picked on everyone else at our old school."
"Did you get in trouble?" Jack asked feeling he already knew the answer.
"Please..." Elisa said rolling her eyes "You're only in trouble if you get caught, and I never was."
"Only because of your magic," Annie said yawning a little and curling up in her bag.
Jack looked around the room at everyone together in their own groups, some houses mixing with other, some solely one house, listening to what they were saying and it was mostly about Sirius Black and how he could possibly have gotten in.
Hearing the main options he asked Elisa "So, Apparate, Disguise, Shape-shifting, or Flying?"
Elisa was about to answer when Hermione and Ron's voices reached them as she said:
"Honestly, am I the only one who's read Hogwarts: A History?"
"Probably. Why?"
"Because the castle is guarded by more than just walls..."
"What she said," Elisa said settling down "But... if it wasn't, I'd say shape-shifting."
"Lights are going out now!" Percy called out to everyone "I want everyone in their sleeping bags, no more talking."
With that all the candles went out at once, the only lights now came from the ghosts, and the starts and the moon shining down from the ceiling.
Hearing a small whine beside them, Elisa and Jack looked at the lump that was Annie.
Looking over to where Percy was, Jack quietly got up and moved to the other side of her so she was now sandwiched between him and her sister.
"Thank you Jack," Elisa said smiling and slowly went to sleep.
While Bunny said he'd stay and help Percy and Penelope (the Head Boy and Girl), once an hour a teacher came to check on everyone and that things were still going fine.
Every time they came near them, Jack pretended to be asleep, for he was purposefully staying awake and watching all the dreams that were floating above the sleeping students heads, although there were some without dreams – meaning they were awake themselves, he also wanted to know what the Teachers had found out.
At around 3 in the morning Dumbledore himself came in and looked around for Percy who was telling some students off for still being awake and talking.
Once again, Jack pretended he was asleep as he listened to this, believing it to be important.
"Any sign of him Professor?" Percy asked in a whisper.
"No. All well here?"
"Everything under control, sir."
"Good. There's no point moving them all now. I've found a temporary guardian for the Gryffindor portrait hole. You'll be able to move them back tomorrow."
"And the Fat Lady, sir?"
"Hiding in a map of Argyllshire on the second floor. Apparently she refused to let Black in without the password, so he attacked. She's still very distressed, but once she's calmed down, I'll have Mr Filch restore her."
'Wonder if she told him about the fact that Sirius can change into a dog?' Jack thought as the doors opened again and in came Snape.
"Headmaster? The whole of the third floor has been searched. He's not there. And Filch has done the dungeons; nothing there, either."
"What about the Astronomy Tower? Professor Trelawney's room? The Owlery?"
"All searched..."
"Very well Severus. I didn't really expect Black to linger."
As they came closer, Jack got a little more still and calmed his breathing a bit more.
"Have you any theory as to how he got in Professor?" asked Snape.
Slowly, Jack lifted his head from his pillow to listen better.
"Many, Severus, each of them as unlikely as the next."
Opening his eyes a little, Jack looked over to the teachers were, and saw Snape looked a bit more ticked off than usual.
"You remember the conversation we had just before the start of term Headmaster?" Snape asked in a way that sounded like this was a private matter and he didn't want Percy in on it.
"I do..." Dumbledore replied coming to a stop beside Harry, Ron, and Hermione.
"It just seems impossible, that Black could not possibly be able to get into the school without inside help." Snape said in a trying to get his message across voice.
"Like anyone here will be up to do that," Bunny's voice said as he came over from where he had been sketching patterns for his eggs while he watched over everyone. "He's a wanted criminal right? Unless he was threatening them, who will be dumb enough to help him?"
"I can think of a few, Bunnymund." Snape said in the same voice he reserved for Harry. "And there may be one you don't know about. I did express my concerns when Dumblesore appointed - "
"Severus." Dumbledore said firmly "I do not believe a single person in this school would help Black to enter it." his tone making it clear that this conversation was over. "I must go down to the Dementors. I said I would go and tell them our findings when our search was complete."
"Didn't they want to help Professor?" Percy asked.
"Oh yes." Dumbleore answered "But no Dementor will ever set foot inside this school, while I am Headmaster."
Percy looked slightly embarrassed at such an obvious answer.
Quietly Dumbledore left the hall.
Snape watched the Headmaster leave glaring at him a little before leaving as well.
"All y'all that are awake," Bunny said quietly looking around the room "I suggest you get back to sleep. If you're still awake in 10 minutes 5 points will be taken from your house per person awake."
There was a few shufflings of people in sleeping bags and slowly the breathing of said students eased out and everyone was asleep again.
