Chapter 45: Not Alone
Isamu struggled to stand as his head throbbed in pain. His face was torn and bleeding, scales barely hanging on to his skin. His vision blurred as he glared daggers at the inu in front of him. There was no way the western lord could have gotten the best of him. He was so close to snuffing out the daiyoukai's life. What the hell gave him the sudden strength to overpower the eastern lord? He wouldn't get his answer as Sesshomaru charged at him again.
The inu lord pounced off the ground and slammed into the dazed dragon. His jaw enclosed around Isamu's back, dragging him up and tossing him to the side.
Isamu hit the ground with a thundering crack. Struggling to get to his feet, he hissed at the inu. Begrudgingly, he knew this battle was his lost. Keeping his eyes on the inu, he took to the skies, making his way back to the eastern lands.
There was an out cry of cheers as the western soldiers pushed back against their enemies. However, even with their leader's retreat, the soldiers of the east continued to hold their ground.
An unusual stillness in the air caused some soldiers to pause, their only warning was Hayate's shout for his warriors to get back. Within seconds a torrent force of destruction ripped across the field, perfectly dividing the armies. All eyes turned to the origin of the attack. Inuyasha was walking towards them, a scowl plastered on his face, his grip tightened around the Tetsusaiga. The surviving eastern soldiers glanced between the angry hanyou, the large inu lord, and the western army before deciding to cut their loses and retreat.
Hayate let out one long exhale before practically storming over to Inuyasha. "I would say your timing was perfect but you nearly killed us in the process."
Inuyasha gave a coy smile. "You managed to get out of the way in time. Thought I gave you enough to react."
Hayate refused to give that any kind of response and turned away. His breath stopped and his eyes widened. "Lord Sesshomaru-" He raced across the field, vaguely registering the hanyou right behind him. The inu lord had transformed back to his humanoid form and was kneeling on the ground in a pool of blood. Both hanyou and tori reached the inu's side, getting him up on his feet.
"Oi, Sesshomaru-" "My lord-"
They went on either side of him; each with their arms around the inu, steadying him. Sesshomaru let out a hiss as they began walking forward. Both males paused sharing worried glances.
"I'm fine," the inu ground out between clenched teeth.
"No you're not," Inuyasha replied. "You're losing too much blood."
He barely spared his half-brother a glance. "Why are you here? I made it specifically clear-"
"Don't start that shit right now," the hanyou interrupted. "Scold me or insult me after you've healed up."
"Kagome.."
"Is perfectly fine. Worried as all hell about you though. And considering you're a bloody mess right now-"
"Might I suggest we continue this inside?" Hayate muttered casting his worried gaze to Sesshomaru. The inu lord was breathing heavily and staggering in his steps. "We need to get him to Shio-san immediately."
"No" Sesshomaru muttered. "Take care of our injured first."
"One, no one is as badly injured as you are. Two, you are my top priority."
A huff of annoyance was the only response as the two continued to lead the daiyoukai to the healer. By the time they headed inside Shio was already waiting for them. The old healer beckon them to carry the western lord to his chambers.
"Lay him gently" she instructed them. "Good. Thank you. I can take it from here now. You may leave."
"Are you sure?" Hayate hesitated at the door.
"He will be just fine. Now go." She physically ushered the two males out the room and closed the door.
Kagome kept her eyes on the horizon. It had been a few hours since Inuyasha ran off after Sesshomaru. The was a dark grip around her heart that told her something was wrong. Maybe she was being paranoid. But her thoughts drifted to the ruined well and the same grief rose up to strangle her. What if Sesshomaru was hurt?
She mentally shook herself. Don't dwell on negative thoughts. He's fine. He can handle Isamu. He'll come back. There was a whining coming from her arms as Mizuki reached for her face.
"Are you trying to comfort your mommy?" She raised the little pup up to her until their foreheads touched. "My sweet girl. Don't you worry I'm going to be okay."
Her soft voice seemed to ease the fidgety inu as she started babbling. She gave the little inu a soft smile before returning her sights to the horizon. The sun was beginning to set.
"My Lady Kagome," the western soldier came to stand beside her. "The air is starting to chill. Please come inside and warm yourself." The soldier had remained behind as per his lord instructions. He had failed to keep the hanyou from leaving so the least he could do was make sure the young female stayed safe and well.
Kagome was ready to protest before she stopped herself. This was no time to be stubborn and selfish. She did enough of that already. She gave the soldier a small nod in confirmation. "If no one returns tonight we leave at first light."
"Of course my lady."
She gave a hum in thought as they returned to the village. The youkai pulled the blinds of the hut to the side for her to walk in. She smiled in thanks before walking inside.
The hut was too quiet. Sango kept a weary eye on the youkai soldier from the East. Miroku was reading a scroll, his brow creased in concentration. Shippo and Rin sat close to Kaede as the old miko stirred a pot of soup. Kagome took a seat next to Sango accepting the hug from the demon hunter.
The West soldier nudge the East soldier and signaled him to follow outside. "We'll stand watch outside." The two youkai stepped outside.
Kagome laid her head on Sango's shoulder sighing deeply.
"I'm going to guess I don't need to ask how you are holding up." The older girl stated sympathetically.
"I feel antsy. And worried. And like I'm going to throw up."
"Then it's a good thing I thought to gather some herbs." Kikyou's voice came from the entrance as she walked in. In her hands was a bundle of leaves and branches. "I have something for nausea."
The priestess sat next to the fire and began unravelling her bundle. Carefully she picked out the ones she needed. She grounded the leaves into a small wooden bowl before adding some of the soup from Kaede's pot. She handed the bowl to Kagome with a smile.
The younger woman took it graciously and started to eat. "It's really good. Thank you." She commented between spoonful of the soup. She felt a bit better after finishing the meal. Maybe a bit too much as she felt her eye lids get heavy. She cast a suspicious glance at Kikyou. "That wasn't just for nausea was it?"
The other priestess gave a sympathetic smile whilst shaking her head. "It will help you rest easy."
Kagome huffed in defeat before deciding lay down next to her friend. "Just letting you know you're being unfair." She mumbled, closing her eyes. She tried focusing on her breathing, Mizuki's small body next to her, the crackling of the fire or Sango's gentle touch on her head. However her thoughts kept settling on the inu-youkai. Hoping with all her heart he was okay.
She still needed to make up for her attitude towards him. So he will be okay. Because she still needed to see him. To talk to him. To hear his voice.
Guys again. I am so sorry. I have never been so sick in my life. I'm better now, got out last week. So as I'm trying to get my life back on track hope this keeps you for 2weeks. Thanks for the reviews. They made me happy.
