Sawada Tsunayoshi suppressed the need to flinch when he heard the door opening.
Usually, the door opening just after the bell rings is not a good sign for him. Well, this school itself always ring an alarm bell inside his head. Usually at this time, Monday morning, Nezu sensei would came in. Test sheets or homework in hand. The older would let his eyes slid around the room before settling itself in Tsuna's quivering form.
Then the lashing would start. All kind of berating and evil voice, or mockery hidden behind a thin veiled pity. Laughter would follow after that, fully mocking and degrading form. At these times, Tsuna wants nothing more than the ground to swallow him up. To fully disappear from all the pair of eyes that decided Tsuna as the next subject of mockery.
Closing his eyes and taking a shaky breath, he tried to calm his beating heart.

Opening his eyes again, he tried to relax in his seat before finally remembering what actually triggered the sudden onslaught of panic he felt earlier.
Immediately, his hands fumbled into his bag, no doubt taking out the books needed for the class. He needs to be ready before the teacher arrived, lest it's another humiliation for him. Glancing towards the front of the classroom nervously, he could see Nezu sensei entering with a thick wad of paper on his hand. Of course, without a doubt it's the test they took last week.
Great, he thought, filled with dread.
Tsuna sighed, silently preparing himself for the humiliation that he's sure already resting on the tip of the older man tongue. Surely, the teacher who seems have a personal vendetta against him would took the chance to belittle him.
Lost at his internal musing for his upcoming doom, he almost missed the second person entering the room. Immediately the class silenced upon that person arrival. Intrigued by that, he decided to cast his gaze towards the second arrival and almost immediately, he blinked. Wide eyes staring at the girl who's practically radiating nervousness from her very being.
It's a girl, shorter than the average height of girls her age with fluffy green hair that reminded him of his own mess of a hair. It's longer than his own obviously, reaching just pass the girl shoulder in a dark waves. Though, that's now what caught his attention. What caught the attention of him, and clearly several other people in class is her eyes. Big doe eyes with the most brilliant green he had ever seen stared back, albeit a bit shyly.
She looked around, shy gaze sweeping around the room. Every time she locked gaze with someone, red would bloom on her cheeks before she ducked her head down. Hands began fumbling with the edge of her skirt nervously.
Distantly, he could hear the whisper of his classmates. Namimori after all is a small city. Everyone knows everyone here, most of them had shared the same class since elementary school. Being a new face, bright eyed and shy, would instantly give you a golden ticket to be liked by the rest of the school.
How nice, he thought inwardly. To be actually liked. To be wanted.
All his life, the feeling of wanted is something distant to him. His mother, while he love the woman to death, is a bit naive or maybe just refusing to see the obvious sign of mistreatment her son is facing. Though, at least, his mother is still there. Still there to greet him with homecooked meal and smile that at this point, the only good thing to his day.
His father is a distant figure. Tsuna can't even remember how his father looks like outside of pictures. Once upon a time, long ago, his father had been someone that his arrival would brim him so much excitement. He remembers embracing his father at the airport with the older laughing and swinging him around on his arm. Those times where his father is actually here and where his life is not so full of mockery, had been the highlight of his life.
Now, with an absent father with dubious job and unseeing mother, Tsuna is not sure what is the feeling to be wanted.
"As you can see," drawled Nezu, hand motioning for the girl to take a step forward. "We have a new student today."
The girl eyes nervously swept across the room before a splash of red colored her freckled cheeks. "H- hello.." she muttered shyly with a low voice that barely enough to be heard across the room. "I'm Izuka Midoriya, its nice to meet you!" the words that followed was spoken in a rapid succession before she ended it with a short bow.
It's endearing, he thought.
"Is there any question about Midoriya?" asked Nezu sensei. Immediately, hands are raised around the room. Nezu sensei merely raised a questioning eyebrow before he gestured for the students to ask their question one on one.
"Where did you live previously Midoriya-chan?" asked one of the boys at the back. Tsuna remembers him as someone who once put his notebooks in the toilet.
"M-Midoriya-chan?" stuttered the girl, red blossoming on her cheek once again. She sounds shy and unsure. As if the nickname is something foreign for the girl. "Um, I'm from Musutafu" she answered, voice soft.
Musutafu is pretty far from him. It will took a couple hour of train ride to reach that town. After all, the country main heroic activity happens there. It's a bustling city with many heroes running around the place, including many from the top 10. A far cry from Namimori, a town with the highest quirkless probability in Japan.
He wonders what Midoriya-san thought of Namimori. A small town compared to the large metropolitan city of Musutafu.
"What's your hobby?" Asked one of the girl on hisright.
"I- i like gardening and reading I guess?" replied Midoriya-san with a small tilt of his head.
Nezu sensei allows two more questions to be asked before he ended the introduction session. He could hear groans of disappointment rang around the room.
Ah, Tsuna thought again. She's going to be popular isn't she?
"Okay so now Midoriya you could sit-" The older eyes sweeps around the room before settling where Tsuna is sitting. Only at that time, Tsuna remembers that the seat next to him is actually empty. "Next to dame- I mean Sawada, please raise your hand"
Tsuna raised his hand meekly.
Nodding softly, Midoriya shuffled to where the empty seat next to Tsuna is. As she sat and began putting out his notebooks, their eyes met.
Midoriya gave him a smile and a soft nod of her head. The bright green eyes brightened incredibly and the rosy hue on her cheeks seems to complimented the soft freckles dotting her skin.
He doesn't even realize how red his face is.
T that's cute.
That was Tsuna first meeting with his lightning.
Tsuna can't find himself to surprised when Midoriya-san become one of the most well liked students in Namimori middle.
After all, the girl is smart and nice. She always readily offer a smile to everyone that talked towards her, as well as helping hand every time someone in need. Soon, the transfer student Midoriya-san become Midoriya-san who smiles like an angel and always ready to help everyone.
It's not even a month since Midoriya-san transfer and Tsuna actually knows that someone already confessed to the girl. Even Kyoko-chan doesn't have that kind of record and she's the most popular girl in his school!
"Sawada-san?" asked Midoriya-san one day. There's a small smile on her face and she's fiddling a bit with the hem of her sweater.
Embarassingly, Tsuna actually yelped, turning his head in record speed towards the source of the voice. "M-M-Midoriya-san!" he finally let out, nervousness bubbling on his throat. "Uh- What can I help you?"
The bell just rang and the male was in the middle of putting his things inside his bag in a hurried manner. After all, he doesn't want to linger in his class after school. It's better for him to immediately went home before some of his bullies found him and- yeah.
Sometimes he wonder what does it feel to be invisible. To be someone that no one noticed.
Maybe his things won't be lost these often? Maybe he won't have that many bruises littering his skin just under his sleeves?
"Um- Sawada-san?" said Midoriya-san again, breaking him out of his reverie.
"Ah- Y-Yeah!"
The girl smile becomes a bit wider and he swears her green eyes becomes impossibly brighter at that moment. "We have class duty together" informed the girl. "I was thinking we should do it together? I mean, if you don't want to-"
"I'm alright with that!" he said, louder than he intended to. Immediately, his face colored. Completely embarrassed. "In not a creepy way of course! I mean, Midoriya-san uh- I really mean it!"
Midoriya-san actually laughed at that, a small sound that erupted from her throat that only mace Tsuna flushes more.
"Okay then Sawada-san" grinned the girl. "I'll see you after school?"
"Y-yes…"
She left at that, giving her a small wave.
It was nice, to have someone to talk to, decided Tsuna after that incident.
Midoriya-san was really nice. Really, really nice. She listens attentively to whatever he said and always try to converse with him, even when Tsuna can only stutter or duck his head embarrassingly. The girl too, always offers him that smile of hers. The one that has become really famous in his school.
An Angel, that's what Midoriya-san is, he decided. Someone that's too good for her own good.
That day, Tsuna comes home with a light heart and a smile on his face after years of lifeless eyes and trudging.
This year, may be a good one, he thought. Maybe, it won't be as bad as last year.
Shortly after that, a baby in a suit arrived on his doorstep.
His previously mundane life changed overnight.
How can he describe Reborn?
He's violent. He's weird. He's crazy. He's-
Tsuna was half convinced that no word in existence could explain the enigmatic whirlwind of Reborn's presence. To start with, he's a baby. A baby that claimed he is the world greatest hitman, tasked to tutor him to be the next mafia boss.
The next mafia boss.
Who would believe that kind of thing?
Okay, Tsuna may got grades below than average and social skill less than a potato, but he's not that stupid to believe something that an unknown baby just said. He was sure that this is was another scam, or just some new type of bullying his schoolmates come up with. He was half expecting to get mocked on the way to school the next day.
But reborn brandished guns, hammers, and all kind of dangerous weapons that should never be in a baby's hands and began shooting him.
His conscious began fading and before he knows it, he's half naked in front of the school gates after confessing his undying love to Kyoko-chan, the most popular girl in school. Tsuna can't even describe how mortified he is. Not only he is a dame now, he is- he is now branded as a pervert too.
God, please, why is this keep happening to him?
He has to borrow a spare uniform from the infirmary. Head hung low and face scarlet red as the nurse gave him the spare uniform. All the look and hushed whisper directed towards him as he made his way to class made him think that he's rather be dead than be here.
Why is this his life?
Why is he like this?
When he entered the classroom that day, he could feel the gaze are heavier than usual. More judgmental, more piercing, and more full of malice. Tsuna shuddered, immediately avoiding all the gazes around him. He can already imagine it, how much of a torture his life will become from now on. How vicious the bullying will become soon.
"Um" called out a small voice. "Are you okay Sawada-san?"
Tsuna blinked, almost in disbelief. Slowly, he turned his head towards the desk besides him. And sure is, he met the big questioning gaze of Midoriya-san.
The girl tilted her eyes more, brows furrowed as her gaze still settled on him. "Sawada-san?" she asked again. "Are you- are you okay?"
"Y-Yes!" he stuttered out, hand clenching his uniform tightly. "I- I- I am okay! Why?"
"It's just that…" she trailed out. "You seems uncomfortable, is there anything I could help? Should I bring you to the infirmary? Or… Um, are you not comfortable anywhere?"
"No no no!" Tsuna said, waving his hand frantically. "I- Its okay Midoriya-san! Just- Just ignore me!"
The furrow between her brows become more prominent. "Are you sure?" she prompted again. As if realizing something, Midoriya-san started leaning forward, the next words is just a hushed whisper between them. "I… heard rumors about you from the others earlier…"
Tsuna immediately tensed at that.
This is the end, he thought. Now, Midoriya-san is going to hate him too. The only one that actually spared a smile towards him is going to hate him soo-
Noticing that, Midoriya-san gave him a small smile of assurance. "Trust me, I'va handled nasty rumors before, I know to not believe every rumors there is"
He blinked at that, mouth growing dry. "Midoriya-san…"
"We may never talked much before Sawada-san, but I want to believe that you're not like what the rumors portray you" she continue, a small grin erupted on her face at the end of the sentence. "If you need anything, or if you just need someone to confide into, just to let you know, I'm always willing okay? We sat next to each other after all"
Tsuna stared.
Stared because he almost can't believe what he just heard.
When was the last time someone said that they will listen to him? That they will try to understand himself and all the problems entailed?
A memory, vague and blurry, of his mother comforting him in a past long gone. Of his long lost father – can he even call the man father at this point – carrying him on his arms in an attempt to cheer him up. Of his small family, seating on a table together and talked about their days as worries.
Something that is nothing but a memory at this point. Dearly missed, but he's unsure if it will happen again.
It's been so long, he thought. To have someone like that.
His heart thundered inside his chest.
"Okay, thank you Midoriya-san"
The smile Midoriya-san gave him is almost able to brighten up the room.
And when Tsuna thought his life couldn't be any weirder- another transfer student arrived.
Midoriya Izuka life changed when she was in middle school.
She always thought that if the heroic path is not meant for her, she would opened a flower shop. A flower shop in a small city, near the countryside with quaint neighborhood and greenery surrounding it. She would plant all of the flowers herself, with her mother help.
Reality, couldn't been so far off.
Its been a while since she moved to the small town of Namimori. A town far away from Musutafu, far away from the heroes she once admire so much. A town with the highest population of the quirkless in Japan. Her life, in this town, had been nothing but nice.
The middle school she enrolled in really think highly of academics. Izumi realized that and was thoroughly delighted. No one actually care that she's quirkless. That she doesn't have something special like her old schoolmates. Here, she can just live as plain old Midoriya Izuka without meeting any scorn. Just a simple quirkless girl with dream to open a flower shop one day.
In one particular day, a day where in the future she would decide Is the start of all of the fuckery in her life, Midoriya Izuka met a baby. While meeting a baby is not unusual- the baby in question.. is a little bit peculiar.
"Ciaossu!" he greeted and oh god, is that a gun – way way too realistic to be mere toys – in his hand!? "I'm the world greatest hitman, Reborn!"
Izuka chocked.
What-
What did he just say?
"Uh-" unsure what to reply, she let her eyes trailed to her surrounding, an attempt of her making sure that this is actually reality and not just her mind playing tricks on her. Its normal, nothing out of place, she nervously noted as she crouched down to be an eye level with the weird baby. "Where's your parents?"
"Dead"
Izuka chocked again. Oh my god what the hell is actually going on!?
"Um-" she started again, staring at the baby standing in fronf of her. Is Namimori such a safe town that babies could be wandering around without supervision. "Can nee-chan help you with something?"
The baby, blinked before he waved around the way too realistic gun he's holding. "Do you want to join the mafia?" he asked.
That was definitely not the answer Izuka was expecting. Is this the trend with kids these days? Is role playing as a hero not the trend anymore?
"Do- do you want to go to the police station with me? Maybe with that we could help-"
The rest of her sentence was cut off when a voice rang out near them.
"REBORNN!"
Wait that's the baby name isn't it?
Turning her head, Izuka eyes wander towards the source of the voice and hopefully a guardian for this baby. Her eyes landed on two familiar figure of her classmates, running towards them with heavy breath.
Sawada Tsunayoshi, the resident loser as the rest of her classmates fondly informed her on her first day was running towards them. Though, she likes to think that Sawada-san is the quiet boy that seat next to her. He's nice and a bit shy, but he's nothing like what her other classmates informed her.
His small form panted as he skidded into a stop in front of her and Reborn. Next to him, is the new transfer student from Italy, a teen with silver hair and green eyes like her own, Gokudera Hayato.
"Umm.. Sawada san?" she finally found her voice and speak up. Tsuna yelped in surprise, as if just noticing her presence. "Is this your younger brother?"
"M-M-Midoriya san!?" he screeched, eyes going wild back and forth from her figure towards Reborn. "What are you doing here!?"
"I was walking towards the market when-" her eyes turned towards Reborn who's gun now magically disappear and- where the hell did he get the chameleon? "Reborn? Is that his name? here appeared all of a sudden"
"I'm so sorry for that!" Sawada san screamed, bowing his body. That action makes Gokudera san scream that he didn't have to do that for someone so insignificant. Okay rude. "He didn't say anything weird right?"
Izuka laughed nervously. "Ah, he did said something about greatest hitman? But a child imagination is amazing after all"
"Right-"
"You! Reborn san is actually the world greatest hitman!" Growled Gokudera who suddenly fished something out of his pocket-
Is that a bomb!?
Sawada san seems to noticed It too and he started yelling, "Gokudera kun put- out down your bo- I mean fireworks! Yes, fireworks!"
The girl can only watch as Sawada san panic filled form desperately asked Gokudera san to put down the thing that is apparently fireworks?
"Sawada san.. um.. I believe I can entrust reborn to you?" she said lamely. "I still have an errand to do"
Sawada san turned towards her, relief splaying across his face. "Yes! Yes! I'm so sorry for the inconvenience Midoriya san!"
"I don't mind, well I'll be taking my-"
"Do you want to join the famiglia, Midoriya Izuka?"
Izumi stopped on her tracks when Reborn finally spoke up again. "I'm sorry?"
"Do you want to-"
"AAAH! Reborn don't drag her into this!" Yelled Tsuna as he scooped Reborn to his shoulder. "Never mind Midoriya san!"
"If you say so.." muttered the girl before slowly taking her leave from the odd trio.
One week after that, the school star baseball player attempted to jump off the roof.
Izuka likes to think that she's observant.
From all the heroic notebooks shuffled deep inside her cabinet, battered and fully used with all kind of characteristics, advantages or disadvantages of every hero she ever saw, she thinks she needs to be observant to be able to do that.
Her observing habit also happens when she move to this new school.
And from there, she's pretty sure that Yamamoto Takeshi previously is not friends with Sawada Tsunayoshi and Gokudera Hayato.
Yamamoto Takeshi had been the star baseball player of their school. Some said that the big high school centered baseball school like Seido and Inashiro has set their eyes on the young pitcher. Seeing his skill in one of the PE class, Izuka like to agree on that. She may not be that knowledgeable on baseball, but she's sure that Yamamoto is really a good player.
Not long after that, the male broke his arm, and after that, Yamamoto tried to jump off the room.
An act that managed to be stopped by Sawada Tsunayoshi.
She remembered watching the baseball star, alongside the rest of the school, standing at the edge of the rooftop. The teen had said that the "baseball god" had abandoned him, making him seeing there is no reason for him to live anymore. She also remembered trying to run to the front amidst the dense people around him to maybe save the said teen.
The part of her that still has that heroic dream. To dream of being a hero even with her quirkless state screeched, demanding her to try to save the teen.
That is, until Sawada Tsunayoshi burst out of nowhere. Only in boxers and a fire of determination.
"I will save Yamamoto!"
Sawada Tsunayoshi sat next to her desk. She never has many conversation with him, only small greetings or maybe asking to borrow an eraser. One particular moment she remembers about the said teen, is when another transfer student, Gokudera Hayato, kicked the teen table out of the way.
She had been so frightened at the sudden bout of aggressiveness and had fear for her own life.
Though the next day Gokudera acted as if Sawada is the second coming of god and worshipped the very ground he walked upon.
Strange, she thought idly. No one changed that drastic only after a day.
Gokudera acted like a guard dog around Sawada. As if there is someone that made their mission to harm Sawada and Gokudera is there to protect him. It was a bit strange, but Izuka herself is not that well versed in the act of friendship so she doesn't think much about it.
Then she has this weird encounter with Sawada and the baby, the maybe Sawada's younger brother. The baby is cute, she has to admit. With miniature suit and high pitched voice that tugged her heart. Though he asked a weird question, Izuka thinks its just because children has many imaginations.
The sheer panic on Sawada face though seems a bit weird. And how defensive Gokudera is when she asked if this mafia thing is some kind of play.
Maybe they're really not playing? Shaking her head and deleting that though out of her head, Izuka continue to think. There's no way Sawada is an actual mafia boss. To start with, he's a middle school student, and Sawada doesn't really act like a… mafia boss.
"Sawada-san" called out Izuka, hands full of worksheet that needs to be filled the next week.
Sawada-san turned his head towards her. "Y-Yes! Uh- Midoriya-san"
She smiled. "This is the worksheet for next week" her hand outstretched towards where Sawada is sitting. Lifting her eyes and meeting both Yamamoto's and Gokudera's, she also outstretched her hand towards them. "Uh, you guys should take it too"
Yamamoto gave her a cheery thanks and Gokudera let out a long string of grumble as he snatched one.
"Thank you Midoriya-san" said Sawada-san with a relieved smile on his face.
Izuka nodded, a smile also on her face. "Ah, I'm sorry if this sounds insensitive and a bit prodding, but… you guys are friends now?"
The three of them blinked, staring at each other before Gokudera-san exploded.
"I am the boss right hand man, Woman!" yelled the teen that reminds her too much of Kacchan. "You better watch your tongue around the Tenth!"
The Tenth of what?
"Hahah! We're playing mafia game-"
"AAAAHH YAMAMOTO-KUN!" yelled Sawada-san desperately, trying to silenced the taller teen who continue to laugh.
She doesn't really know how to respond to that. "Ah, the Mafia game?" she asked. "Are you guys playing with Sawada-kun younger brother? Reborn?"
"It's not a game-"
What Gokudera-san about to say was cut off by Sawada-san. "Yes!" he let out. "Yes! The three of us are playing games with Reborn! Roleplaying as Mafia hahah!"
"I see then" said Izuka with a nod. "Well, I'll take my leave then?"
"Y-Yes Midoriya-san! I'll see you later!"
As she took her leave, Izuka can't help but think how weird the situation is.
Huh.
