There was a long pause. Kara waiting for Lena's next move and Lena gathering her thoughts until she wasn't anymore.
"We talked about this before, our families, I won't go down that bitter path just yet, wondering what's real. I was opening up and sharing personal details and you kept on lying."
"Lena…"
"No. It hurts but that's not the point. I was raised a Luthor, and Luthor prioritize. Reason sits firms and hold the reins. I was not to let feelings bust away and run wild in the chasms it would create. My judgement was meant to have the last word in every internal argument I might have. I was raised to listen to that small voice which interprets the dictate of conscience. My head before my heart." She paused, took a deep breath. "But you know that for so long I had troubles with it, because deep down Luthor didn't prioritize reason, they repress their feelings until they are barely there anymore. I could never do that."
Kara gulped, it was not common for Lena to babble and not easy to follow. Kara let out a small. "I know." She could only hope that it wasn't the last straw.
"I learned that didn't make me weak in the literal sense of it, on the contrary it could make you thrive. However, it is true that love can be a weakness, not in my person, but in the armor I had created to protect myself. I could get hurt through the people I loved, so I became wary of the people I let in."
"You let me in."
"I did". Nodded Lena. "And more. I fell in love with Kara Danvers, so hard." She stopped as pained green eyes looked deep into hopeful blue ones.
"And I fell in love with you too." Stated Kara, she didn't think before actually saying the words how it would feel. Things had rarely resonated so true within her heart. It was like everything made sense, she was in love with Lena Luthor.
"Which was why it hurt so much. My love doesn't exist. I fell in love with a mirage."
"That's not true Lena. I am Kara Danvers."
"Aren't you Kara Zor-El?"
Kara felt a tear slowly run down her face, then on the opposite side. How could she deny it? She could only nod. "But Kara Zor-El is Kara Danvers."
"That is being said by someone who lied to me for years. Believe me when I say I wish I could just…be with the woman I love. Right now, I can't."
Kara sniffed "Didn't you say you'd give me one more chance?"
"For the first time in more than a decade I am. But I need time to reassess the situation. I need…to fall in love with Kara Zor-El as a whole, not a part of her or who I wish she was."
Kara nodded, what else could she say. "I understand." The next moment was tensed, Kara started wrapping her arms around herself. It was a very difficult moment for Lena too and when she saw the blonde move she realized she could use to comfort too. Slowly she moved, in case Kara refused, she wrapped her arms around the taller woman. Kara instantly reciprocated, letting out a contented sigh as she did so.
"I'll earn it back." Stated Kara against Lena.
The raven-haired woman pulled back. "I've yet to meet a version of you who ever gives up."
Elle walked past them, not going anywhere, she just felt jealous. She smirked as she looked at Supergirl. "And by that she meant me."
Kara glared, then she frowned looking from the general to Lena and back. She crossed her arms in a very Supergirly pose. No word crossed her lips, she wasn't sure how to phrase it so she sighed.
"What is it Kara?" Inquired Lena it was more than obvious that the blonde had something to say.
"I…I…" She sighed once more as she looked down for a second. "Don't take it the wrong way." Started the Kryptonian and Lena's back tensed immediately. "There is something very… powerful between us, and I'll do everything to earn your trust back so we can move forward, together. I just…I fear that you might get…confused…"
Lena glared at that last word. Kara back-pedaled at the reaction. "Not confused per say, maybe…tempted…" She groaned, frustrated with her inability to express herself.
"She doesn't want you to shack up with someone else and particularly an alternative version of herself." It was Alex's voice that resonated in the room. They all turned to look at her, she seized that opportunity to grab the bottle of wine on the counter by the neck and wiggle in in the air. "Now I could really use something stronger."
"So do I." Mumbled Lena as she made her way back across the room to get some whiskey.
Alex pushed her glass on the counter, Lena shook her head from side to side, she was not going to pour fine Whiskey in a glass wine. She pulled out the proper crystalware. She poured one for her guest first, then her own.
"I don't think it's right for people to say to others who they can and cannot do." Objected Elle.
"What they can and cannot do." Couldn't help but correct Kara.
With a small head nod Elle agreed. "That too."
The brunettes behind the counter were barely a foot apart, Lena's glass half way lowered from her lips and the flat surface Alex's glass was back on. They shared a look.
"It wouldn't be fair to either of them." Stated the DEO Agent.
"Elle needs to stay here, she is still recovering." Lena couldn't let this version of Kara go, and go where. She had no one but her in this universe. She couldn't go with Kara, they'd probably end up arguing all the time, maybe even fighting. The level of trust she had in Alex took a hit too after this Supergirl revelation, she'd always prioritize her sister and sending her to the DEO was unconceivable.
"This is just a bad idea, you can't live with a carbon copy of the woman you're in love with but don't trust at the moment." She drank the rest of her glass in one go.
Kara immediately walked up to them, grabbed Alex's glass and took it away from her. "I'd say you had enough."
"I'm just speaking the truth." Argued Alex. She turned back to the heiress. "And you can't sleep with her either."
Lena raised an eyebrow.
"On the other hand, it might be cathartic" Suggested Overgirl with a smirk as she joined them. The blondes standing on one side of the counter and the brunettes on the other.
Lena let out an unusual laugh, slightly tense maybe a little uncomfortable, but what else could she do. The crystal glass in Kara's hand broke. Alex took advantage of the attention being on something else to brought her wine glass closer to get some more whiskey.
Kara's anger left her immediately, horrified that she had broken one of Lena's glass, one she could only guess the price of. "I'm so sorry"
Lena reacted like she would have before, worried that Kara had cut herself, then she remembered. Supergirl. "It's okay Kara" She gave some paper towels to the blonde then went to grab a sweeper for the floor.
Kara was furiously wiping her hands, Alex watched Lena turn away as she put down her glass. In a quick move she grabbed the general by the lapel of her shirt. Elle was surprised, even more so that she let herself be moved, with her powers coming back she could have remained immobile. She wondered for a second why would she be humoring the other woman?
"Listen to me. It doesn't matter which universe you come from, I'll chasten my sister anytime she acts like an obnoxious ass, that might include so real-life ass kicking. Now stop making things worse and sit down." Alex let her go before Lena was back, handing Kara a small dustpan.
Elle didn't really think as she obeyed the order and sat down, a single word echoing in her head, sister. She felt that annoying pull in her chest again. She started thinking about family and she couldn't stop the tears. She felt overwhelmed and pathetic.
"What happened?!" Lena went immediately by her side. Elle wiped the tears the best she could. She was embarrassed and didn't know where to look. Her eyes landed on the DEO agent who looked worried and maybe a tad guilty. Like she cared. Elle closed her eyes.
Someone hugged her, she knew it was Lena and melted. She was surprised when she felt a hand on her shoulder. Elle had to know who it was, she saw Supergirl with a kind expression offering comfort. She felt strangely touched and annoyed at the same time. How can this version of herself be so…good?
"Maybe you should lay down for a minute?" Offered Alex.
"Alex is right, come on." Lena helped Elle, well it was more accompany than real help. They moved, followed closely by the Danvers sisters. Lena opened the door, Elle's head still in the crook of her neck. They slowly made their way to the bed.
Elle laid down without looking at any of them, back towards the door. Lena sat down and rubbed her arm. "Do you need anything?"
A hand took place on top of hers and Elle replied with a small voice. "Stay."
Lena looked at Kara, who could do nothing more than nod. It was the right thing to do.
The raven haired lowered herself on the bed slowly, she heard the door click shut as she moved closer. She was the big spoon this time.
As soon as they were out the door Alex hugged the blonde, after a while she pulled back. "Looked like you needed a hug too."
"Thanks." Sighed Kara. "And I think laying down would do you some good too."
"I'm okay." Declared Alex.
Kara gave her a look. "You're drunk and it's not even noon yet."
Alex rolled her eyes. "Exceptional circumstances."
"Sure." Drawled Kara. "Do you want to call J'onn to keep him updated on the situation?"
"You know what? Maybe lying down isn't such a bad idea." Alex was already making her way back to the living room. "Do you think Lena has Netflix?"
