A few groups of people walked through the large park in the setting sun. The section of grass overlooking the nearby beach was occupied by a small group of UA students standing there as they slowly ate at the sandwiches they were holding. Eight teens were there listening as another spoke.
Midoriya, Yaoyorozu, Mina, Tokoyami, Uraraka, Tsu, and Jiro all sat in silence as Katara told them what had happened after the festival. With Tenya being distant and silent about the situation, they were all curious to what was going on. After explaining what his condition was, a sense of relief came over them knowing he was going to live, but the state he would be in made them all sick to their stomachs.
"Damn, I can't believe it. No wonder you both had to leave the festival." Jiro quietly said.
Tsu gave a small nod. "Yeah. I can see why Iida was quieter than normal. Ribbit."
Tokoyami looked back to Katara and watched her stare out to the crashing waves on the beach, a sense of pain on her face that made himself frown. "I am really sorry that happened. But the fact he is alive is a blessing in itself." he said trying to make her feel better.
It did bring a small smile to her face, looking back and nodding to him. "I know. I was worried that he wasn't going to make it, but he will."
"Yeah, he's still gonna be here. You gotta always look at it like that!" Mina said with a large grin to lighten the mood.
"Y-yeah, exactly!" Midoriya chimed in forcing a smile.
Katara felt better than earlier after she told them what happened, the support they were giving her helping to lighten the pain she felt inside. "Thanks everyone. I appreciate it."
"Ribbit. Now we have to cheer up Iida too." Tsu added, earning a small frown from Momo.
"I think we shouldn't pry on him. If he wants some space we should respect him for that." the taller girl said.
"I can try and talk to him tonight. Everyone needs a little help now and then." Katara peeked passed the group to see Todoroki standing just outside the circle, his eyes catching hers when she said that last statement. He had been silent the entire time since they left school, and was always a few paces behind everyone else. She could see the uneasiness in his stance to even being here, obvious he was not used to just hanging out with others. She couldn't help but chuckle internally to herself.
'Seems like he still needs more help.' She said to herself before looking back to the group around her. "Thanks everyone."
"No problem. Told ya I'd be there when you need it!" Mina smiled and gripped the back of her head. "So tell me, you found a place to intern at?"
Katara's smile fell from her face at the question. "Uhh, actually I haven't looked at my options yet. What about you?"
Mina gave a small shrug. "Well I was offered a spot at Gunhead's agency. Don't really know who that is though."
"Gunhead?" Midoriya's eyes lit up at the name. "He's a hero that specializes in armed combat."
Mina raised an eyebrow and smirked. "Really? Sounds pretty badass."
"I know, I got an offer there too!" Uraraka clenched her fists and threw a punch. "I am going there."
"Oh, really?" Mina gave a thumbs up to the gravity girl. "It would be sweet to go with someone I know. Wonder how many offers I would have got if I beat that Kendo."
"You did lose, but you put up a hell of a fight against that red head," Jiro commented as she sighed. "I figured I'd go with Death arms. I didn't get offers so had to pick from whatever choices they gave us."
"Same for me," Tsu chimed in. "I went with the navy, so I know there's going to be water there."
Katara chuckled at Tsu's reasoning, looking over to Tokoyami next. "And you?"
"I have narrowed my choices down to three, but I want to think on it another day before I make my choice." He answered.
"That's pretty smart, gives you time to figure out if its right for you." Katara said.
"Yeah, at least you have a lot of options," Jiro grunted, still annoyed she didn't get any offers. "How about you, Yaoyorozu? You made a choice yet?"
Momo looked down and sighed. "I think so. I didn't read all of my options, but I may go with Uwabami."
Mina tilted her head in confusion. "Uhh, who is that?"
"Wait, the model snake hero?" Jiro stuck her tongue out and gagged. "That prissy woman? Why go to someone like that?"
Momo turned her head away in shame. "I mean… she's not that bad. And she gave me an offer even though I did so poorly at the festival."
"Don't say that about yourself," Katara said with a glare, "Just because you lost doesn't mean you did bad."
Even with her words, Katara could see the look of doubt on Momo's face. Ever since the moment in the hallway with her breakdown, Katara had been curious to what happened in her past to make her so timid now. She wanted to figure out what happened, but with so many others around she figured she wouldn't want to talk about it.
Looking passed the others, Katara figured she should include the one she invited into the conversation as well. "How about you, Todoroki? Did you choose where you want to go?"
Shoto looked at her for a few seconds before he shifted his eyes towards the ground. "I will be going to my fathers agency."
While some of the others were impressed that he got to train under such a powerful hero, Katara felt her heart jump slightly to the idea. "Your father? But… I thought you wanted to, you know… do something different." she asked him, careful of the words she used.
Shutting his eyes for a moment, Shoto turned back to her and exhaled. "I do, but he is still the number two hero. If learning how to be a hero is the purpose of these internships, then he is an ideal place to go to."
While thinking this was a bad idea, Katara could see he was determined to do this for himself, and if he wanted to, then that's what he was going to do. "Alright then, if you think that's the place to go." She said with a small shrug. "What about you Midoriya, did you find somewhere to go?"
"Uhh yeah I did actually," Midoriya gave a quick chuckle and smiled. "I-it's an older hero that was around years ago. He gave me an offer."
"Was that why All Might wanted to talk to you after school?" Uraraka asked.
Tsu put her finger to her chin as she thought to herself. "It is still strange how your powers are so similar. Ribbit."
Midoriya's face began sweating as she brought up that subject again. "W-what do you mean? A-All Might doesn't hurt himself, remember? We are totally not alike!"
Katara raised her eyebrow to why he was so nervous all of the sudden to the statement. "Midoriya, what is your quirk by the way?"
"Mine? I-it's S-superpower! Yeah, superpower! It let's me increase the strength to parts of my body." He quickly said, thinking on the spot to cover himself. "I-it's been kind of a pain to master."
Momo looked down to his fingers and felt a sense of worry. "I hope you are able to figure it out soon. If your fingers keep getting injured, it could be bad for you."
While he blushed to her worry, Uraraka couldn't help but feel her eye twitch at the comment. Why, she didn't know.
As the sun began setting lower, Mina gave a big yawn and stretched her arms. "Well I gotta get going home. Uraraka, wanna walk and talk? I gotta few questions about this gun dude."
"Uhh, sure." Uraraka tuned and gave a wave to everyone, while keeping her eyes on Midoriya."See you tomorrow."
Momo felt a tightness in her stomach for some reason when she saw the blush on Midoriya's face as Uraraka smiled at him, shaking her head to why she felt that. They were just friends… right?
After Mina and Uraraka left, Jiro checked her phone and sighed. "I probably should get going too. Dad was asking for help getting a gift for my mom."
"I should head back home as well." Tsu followed, giving a small nod towards Katara. "I am glad to see you are doing good."
Katara smiled back at her. "Thanks. It feels better to talk about it with others."
Momo felt a twinge in her heart at the statement Katara said, thinking about herself at those words. She had the nagging feeling inside of her head, and she had to get it out.
Tokoyami was the next to follow the others, looking out to the beach one last time. "I must head home now. I hope to finalize my choice tonight for next week. I shall see you all tomorrow."
"See you tomorrow." Both Katara and Midoriya said to him as he walked away. As he left, Katara then noticed Todoroki still sitting there several steps from the remaining group, his eyes staying averted from everyone else. "You know, you don't have to stay away from everyone. We aren't excluding you." She chuckled.
Shoto grunted at her sentence. "I didn't assume you were. I was being respectful to everyone's space."
Katara noticed the shift in his stance, seeing him try to hide the uneasy feeling he had. 'Has he never just… spent time with others?' She questioned internally. It made her upset he had no experience with things like this, obviously due to his upbringing under his dad. Another idea suddenly popped in her head, bringing a smile to her face. "Hey, next time some of us come to the beach here, you should join us."
The offer was surprising to Shoto, looking back towards her. He was so new to this hanging out mentality, and it was all coming at him so fast. Getting food with classmates, and simply talking with them after school. It felt overwhelming, but for some reason, her asking him simply made it easier. Even she was the first to recommend exchanging phone numbers, the first person in the class to do so with him. He couldn't explain why, but she simply made him feel relaxed with himself.
He gave a small nod. "I can try next time. I should head home as well."
"Alright. I'll see you tomorrow." Katara said.
Turning and leaving the remaining classmates, Shoto couldn't help but feel a strange euphoria in his mind. After everything he did to push people away and be stronger, the very person he was trying to beat was being the most kind to him. It didn't make sense, but he didn't care anymore. He couldn't keep the small smile the formed on his lips.
Katara actually became his first friend.
After he left, Katara turned back to see only Midoriya and Momo were left with her. The two of them were looking through the list of offers that Momo had received, but was surprised her was the wide eyed look of shock on the girls face. "What's wrong?" Katara asked.
Midoriya's eyes were bulging out of his face as well, his mouth hanging open in amazement. "I can't believe you got an offer from him. That's so cool!"
Katara tilted her head in confusion."What? Who?"
Momo's mouth trembled as she tried to form words. "T-the number five hero, Edgeshot… he offered me an internship?"
"Really?" Katara smiled in amazement. "That's great! A top hero like that who-
"This is wrong…" Momo shook her head. "This has to be a mistake."
Midoriya looked over to her in surprise. "I-it's not. That's his agency address right there, I am sure of it."
No… why would he ever have given me an offer…" Momo hands squeezed her pages tighter. "I did so horrible, there is no way a top hero like that could-
"Don't say that about yourself. You did good." Katara scolded her. "Just because you lost-
"Lost? I got humiliated… I could do nothing against Bakugo." Momo looked away in shame. "How could someone like me take an offer from someone so great?"
"B-Because he sees something great inside of you."
Momo's eyes widened to Midoriya's words, feeling her stomach tighten. She still shook her head in shame. "I don't deserve something like this though. I haven't been able to show-
"Stop doing that." Katara glared at her. "You keep putting yourself down. Ever since you lost. Why?" She could see the clenching in Yaoyorozu's stance, her words hitting something deep. "What happened when you were younger?"
There it was. The question Momo knew would come but was afraid to hear. She crossed her arms and looked out to the ocean, her mind already replaying those times in her mind again. She knew hiding it anymore from the two of them was pointless, and they deserved the truth. Taking a deep breath, she turned back towards them.
"It was back when I was around six when my quirk starting manifesting. At first I was so confused, not knowing what it was. After some time I realized I could create anything If I knew what it was made of. It was so amazing. Toys, shoes, even money. I… kind of began doing it because the other kids thought it was so cool. But then my parents found out when I was nine and forbade me from doing that. That's when I realized some of the kids were only being friendly with me because I was getting them things. And then… four of them decided they weren't done with me."
Momo's hands clenched her arms when inhaled deeply, thinking back to the name she hadn't spoken in years.
"Karla Ogawa. I thought she was one of my friends, but as soon as I said I couldn't use my quirk anymore, her and her group decided they wanted more. It… started with them finding me after school, following me and cornering me until I made them money. I wanted to tell the teachers or my parents so badly, but… when I said I would… She would hurt me."
Katara gritted her teeth in anger listening to the story, not realizing what Momo had went through. Midoriya was angry as well. But inside… he was feeling a similar pain to the things he experienced.
"They were smart… always hitting the arms or in the legs so I could hide the bruises. They said if I tried saying anything they would get me after school. So… I would get them money, and they would leave me alone for a while after I paid… but then it kept happening. Again and again. Soon, they wouldn't even wait for getting off of school, finding me alone in the hallway or the bathroom. The only other friend I had was too scared to help me, so I was all alone."
"It went on like this for a year, even through the summer. I was so terrified, but inside I was getting more and more angry. I wanted it to end. And then one day when she cornered me against the lockers, I tried to get away. She shoved me back and I hit my head on the wall… and I just got so mad. I… I created a wood pole and hit her. It felt good to finally hit her back. But then…" Momo lip quivered as she re imagined that day. "It made her so mad."
"Ogawa had a stone quirk. Her body… turned to rock. She began…" Momo swallowed the lump that formed in her throat. "She began hitting me, over and over again. I could barely breathe as she hit me in the stomach so many times. Even her friends tried stopping her when she kept attacking me. I… couldn't do anything to stop her. The only reason she did was the teachers came and restrained her. I was taken to the hospital and ended up having 2 broken ribs."
"I can't believe it…" Katara clenched her fist as she watched Momo rub her arm. "She did all of that to you."
Momo gave a small nod. "She was expelled, but my parents were furious at the situation. They had no idea, and were enraged the school didn't know either. But… if I simply did something earlier, it would have stopped before. It was my fault for letting it go on so long."
"It's not your fault…" Midoriya looked up to her with stern gaze. "It's hard to stand up when so many are against you. I know how hard it is. I was pushed around my entire childhood when I thought I was quirkless. I didn't know who to turn to."
The look on his face was one Yaoyorozu recognized, one she recognized as the look of pain she felt as well. "After my parents pulled me out of that school, they put me into a private academy after that. I got better at using my quirk, learning every day what I could use it for. I finally felt like I was getting passed my fears, and I wanted to do something more. I asked to go to UA to be stronger. So… to make me happy, my parents…" She clenched her teeth in frustration. "My parents made a large donation to my school so they would give me a recommendation letter."
Katara and Midoriya looked to each other in surprise, now understanding what she meant in that hallway. "So that is why you were upset." Midoriya said.
Nodding once again, Momo looked away. "I didn't truly earn a recommendation. I should never have gotten one. Once I was into UA, I felt like I could put my past behind me and move forward. That's why I never said anything. But then as time went on, I saw how much stronger everyone else was, and I was completely helpless in my match. I didn't deserve what I was given."
Seeing how depressed she was, Katara felt her own stomach aching. "You shouldn't be hard on yourself. You have come so far from when you were a kid. If you hold onto what happened, it will keep you down." she tried saying to cheer her up.
Momo was about to retort, but Midoriya suddenly turned and stood in front of her, a strong smile on his face.
"You are more amazing than you think. You don't believe you deserved your recommendation, but you passed the test by your own power. And in the beginning of school you placed first in the assessment test over everyone. You did that yourself. You can do anything you put your mind to."
The heat in Momo's cheeks rose again to the look he gave her. It sent a chill through her body, but the words he said caused her stomach to flutter. She told him what happened to her and why she felt weak, but he still believed in her. He couldn't see her as weak. She turned and saw Katara smiling her way, the waterbender also supporting her after everything she said. She felt her chest tighten and smiled in return.
"Thank you. Both of you."
"Of course." Katara reached up and gripped her friends shoulder. "I'll always be there when you need it."
The next morning came pretty quick for Katara, especially since she got home pretty late after finally leaving the beach with Midoriya and Yaoyorozu. By the time she finally got back she wasn't in the mood to actually look through her internship list. She had hoped to meet with Tenya and talk to him, but the entire time she never saw him come out of his room. She waited in the entry to the home until he came out of his room, once again his silence accompanying them the whole way to school. Even when she tried to say anything to him, he simply kept quiet on the train. While she was trying to allow his space, she was beginning to grow impatient.
After they departed the train, she walked along by him on the sidewalk hoping to get something out of him. "So, I didn't see you after school. How was your night?" she asked him.
Tenya gave a small smile. "It was fine. After dinner I did some more studying and went to bed early. I hope you can forgive me for leaving you on your own."
"I was fine. I was with Midoriya and a few others. I was just hoping to spend time with you."
Tenya's eyes widened slightly to what she said before looking forward again. "I appreciate your concern. But after this week I hope everything will be better."
Something in his tone caught Katara's attention, looking up to him in question. "What do you mean? Who did you choose to-
Her legs froze on the spot when something clicked inside her mind, her pulse picking up pace. "Iida… where did you apply for an internship?" When he didn't answer and kept walking, her teeth clenched in frustration. "Iida… please tell me you aren't planning what I think you are."
He kept silent and pressed on down the road, Katara teeth clenching together in frustration. "Iida… Iida!" She ran after and grabbed his jacket. "I know you are angry, but please don't even try what I know you are going to do!"
Tenya suddenly ripped his arm from her grip, looking back at her with a gaze that caused her to back off. It was the first time she had seen him angry.
"Katara, you are a good friend of mine. Right now however, I do not want any lecture from you." he snapped at her.
"I will say what is on my mind. You are planning something stupid." She snapped back.
"I never said what I am doing so don't assume anything."
"Don't play stupid with me right now! I want you to tell me what you are planning!" Katara yelled at him.
Tenya glared and turned away from her, continuing back down the road once more. Katara watched open mouthed as she was left alone on the sidewalk, her mind spinning in so many horrible thoughts. She could tell from the look on his face exactly what he was thinking, because it was something she did herself back in her own home. The difference was she knew her and Zuko could easily take on most benders in their world.
But this… this place was different. A master bender here was far inferior to so many powers here. And from what she could tell, this criminal that hunted down Tensei was far beyond anything she could think of. If he couldn't stop him, she knew Tenya would have no chance. And with how stubborn he was being she knew he was going to a place nearby where it went down. She could only hope the hero he wanted to intern under could knock some sense into him as well.
Stomping after him, she grunted in frustration. She would scold him once again when they got back home.
Huffing out, she clenched her mouth shut before she started saying things she would regret. They kept their eyes away from each other as they walked up the school steps. They made their way down the halls and into their class, the tension between them being felt among the other students. Katara nearly ripped the chair out from her desk and dropped down into her seat, causing Uraraka to jump slightly in surprise next to her. The brunette looked back and forth between Katara and Tenya in front of her, the obvious friction between them reverberating through the air.
The others around them felt it as well, trying their best not to look back towards the scowling pair. Todoroki eyed the girl next to him curiously, never once seeing her so frustrated over something. He then caught a glimpse of Iida passed her, his eyes catching sight of a face filled with anger and fury. One that reminded him of feelings he once had.
Luckily, Aizawa broke the awkward silence as he stood up from his desk. "Alright class, today we have a small list of things to discuss. Before that however, I'll give you all a few minutes to continue looking at your internship choices while I sort out a few things. Whoever has their choices they can deliver them onto my desk."
The door to the classroom suddenly opened up as the teacher Snipe walked into the room. "Aizawa, Principle Nezu needs you to come to his office."
Aizawa raised his brow in surprise. "For what reason?" he blandly asked.
"He needs you to come this instant…" The gun hero turned his gaze to the back of the room. "Katara is to come as well."
Now Katara was the one confused. "Me? Why?" She questioned.
"Is there a reason for this suddenly?" Aizawa asked, his own confusion growing as Snipe turned and walked down the hall.
"It's best if you come right now." Snipe answered.
The eyes in the class turned in bewilderment to the wide eyed waterbender, her confusion just as great as theirs. Aizawa shook his head and sighed. "Well, lets get whatever this is over with. Come on. The class will get back to what I said before."
Katara watched as he walked out of the room, turning to look at everyone eyeing her curiously and in wonderment. She rubbed her head awkwardly before walking passed everyone and out after her teacher. As the door closed on the class, the students looked around hoping for some clarity.
"What was that all about?" Mina asked.
"How should I know?" Kirishima responded with a shrug. "Maybe… the principle wants to discuss what she did at the festival?"
Shoji leaned back in his chair and shook his head. "Seems odd he'd bring that up after all this time."
Momo looked to Todoroki on her right with a questioning gaze. "Why would the principle be asking for both of them?"
"I do not know…" Shoto quietly responded, his eyes still looking over to Iida several rows over.
While the others in the class continued chit chatting, Jiro sighed and pulled her phone out. She opened up her browser and began looking for whatever random stories popped up in her feed. She then noticed one of the podcasts she followed just updated, clicking onto the link to see what they were talking about. When she saw however, her mouth dropped open in shock at what came on her screen. "What in the hell!?" She yelled out.
The others around her looked at her in confusion to the sudden outburst. "Yo, What's up?" Sero asked from behind her. When she didn't answer he cocked his eyebrow curiously, peeking over her shoulder and catching a glimpse of the screen. "Woah, what!?"
Now everyone was confused at this point, the wide eyed shock on Jiro's face making them all confused. Midoriya watched as a few others in the class looked over the girls shoulder in curiosity before their eyes widened as well. He leaned in over his desk to catch a glimpse of what they were seeing, but instead of shock, his eyes bulged out in fear. "Oh shit, shit shit!"
Both Katara and Aizawa followed Snipe down the empty hallway of the school in silence. The whole way their guide had not said a word to them why they were being requested together. She looked over to her teacher in confusion to what was happening, his gaze blank but curious as well. After a few minutes they reached the door, Snipe opening it and letting the two of them inside. As she passed through, Katara glanced around the large office to see the small principle sitting behind his desk. She also noticed that Midnight was standing against the wall to the right, the woman eyeing her curiously.
Immediately Katara felt a strange feeling in her stomach to this situation for some reason.
After the door was shut, The principle gave a small nod. "Thank you for coming, Katara. Take a seat, if you may." Nezu gestured her to the single chair placed in front of his desk.
Katara glanced around as both Snipe and Midnight just stood silent watching her, feeling almost as if… they were watching her. Aizawa noticed the silent tension in the air, his concern growing slightly to the situation. Katara however simply did as he requested and sat down in her seat, earning a small smile from the bear-mouse creature.
"Now I hear that your guardian Tensei Iida is alive. I am glad for you. I know this must be a difficult time for you and young Iida." Nezu said to her.
Katara was certainly surprised by his statement, not expecting him to talk about this. "Y-yes sir. It was fortunate he is alive, but his injuries…"
Nezu closed his eyes and nodded. "I am terribly sorry. It is always hard to see those you care about hurt."
"Yes…" Katara took a deep breath. "But, sir. Since it is his brother, why did you not bring Iida here to talk about this?"
"I wanted to make sure you were okay with everything going on. However…" Nezu clasped his hands together and looked at her directly. "That is not the situation you were brought here to discuss with us. There is something else that has come to our attention about you that we must ask."
Midnight pointed the remote she was holding in her hand and pointed it at the Screen to the side. "This was just aired thirty minutes ago on a live broadcast.
The eyes in the room turned to the TV that flicked on, the screen showing a newscaster standing on stage.
"Now we have always watched the UA sports festival with excitement and glamour, but it seems this year was filled with a surprising secret. The student Kairi Katara, a first year favorite who took home third place, is actually someone who has something to hide."
Katara's heart began beating faster as her picture came on screen, sweat dripping down her forehead in panic as the news continued.
"Four months ago, multiple reports came out of a mysterious water quirk user causing chaos and destruction of property in Hosu City. While initially the mystery figure was never discovered and the story vanishing out of thought, multiple witnesses have claimed that first year Katara was in fact that culprit."
"Oh Shit…" Katara muttered under her breath, feeling the eyes of the other teachers staring at her.
"Multiple people claim she even engaged with the number two hero Endeavor as she resisted arrest. We also discovered footage taken by someone who was there that night"
The Tv picture suddenly changed to a video of a crowd of people watching something, the camera shifting as its owner tried for a better shot. After a moment the video showed Endeavor slashing his flames through a flurry of water whips, the camera following the whips until it landed on their wielder. Katara felt her heart drop down into her stomach when she saw herself clear as day, shooting more water at the pro hero.
"While we have not been able to get Endeavor for questioning yet, one thing is certain. Who is this girl and-
Click.
The Tv shutting off brought an eerie silence to the room, Katara almost hearing her own heart beating in her chest. The incident that happened so many nights ago that she wished she could have forgotten was brought to light once again.
"I believe you get the idea on what we are here for, I presume…" Nezu said calm but sternly. "This is quite an important matter to discuss. What confuses me the most perhaps is how did something like this ever occur in the first place and why."
Katara felt the walls closing in all around her. Her palms were sweating in panic as she sat there being stared at. What in the world could she even say that would make sense to them? It was bad enough people just said she did something bad, but now there was video of her actually fighting a pro hero. How in the world was she going to explain her way out of this one?
Swallowing the lump in her throat that didn't seem to vanish, Katara sat back in her chair and looked at him. "Please sir, I-I know how this looks but I can explain. When I arrived here in Japan, I was so overwhelmed with everything that I panicked and reacted. It was all new to me and I didn't know how to react. And when Endeavor came I was scared and tried to get away. But I promise you didn't try and hurt anyone."
"Sir, if you would allow me to clear this up for you."
All of the eyes including Katara looked up in surprise as Aizawa stepped forward next to her staring down to the girl being questioned. Nezu tilted his head in curiosity. "Aizawa, you have something to say about your student?"
"Yes, and I can give an explanation to what happened. She didn't know what the laws were here and when she reacted it was simply in self defense. She didn't know anything about this place. And I mean… anything."
Katara's heart leaped into her throat when he emphasized that last word, her eyes bulging out of her head. 'Wait, is he really going to say that?' She panicked internally.
Aizawa looked down to her worried face next to him and frowned. He clenched his fist and sighed in frustration before releasing his squeeze. Over the last two weeks he had slowly spoken with Tensei and learned all he could about what he knew about Katara, which included the night she arrived and what happened. It was something he planned to keep to himself, but with the others gunning for her, it was illogical to try and lie through this situation.
"She didn't understand this place because she isn't from Japan, or this world entirely."
'HE SAID IT!' Katara's face turned deep red in nervousness as her biggest secret was revealed to not just one, but three more people. Their reactions were what to expect from something like that being dropped so blatantly. Nezu's mouth fell open, his face blank in confusion even for his high spec mind. Midnight's eyes were a big as dinner plates to the crazy statement. And Even from behind his mask, it looked like Snipe was sitting awestruck from the sudden revelation as well.
Aizawa looked down to Katara once again and gave a small nod. "Lying to them would not have worked, so telling the truth to them is the best option."
"But… could you have let me explain it a little better?" Katara frowned at him, earning an annoyed sigh.
"It's better to be straight forward with it."
Snipe was the first to snap from his shock, stepping forward and holding his fist up. "You really think we would believe something like that? I'm not sure if this is what you consider a joke Aizawa, but we need a real explanation."
"This is a real explanation, and if you allow me to say what I know, then you will all understand." Aizawa shot back at the gun hero.
Nezu sat silent for a few moments before he leaned forward in curiosity. "Alright, I will allow you both to try and explain this to me."
Katara looked back to her teacher, who simply gave another nod towards her. Taking a deep breath, she looked back to the principle and began. She chose to tell the trio listening everything that transpired that night, the fight she had with Endeavor, and how she arrived there in the first place. Explaining how she ended up living with Tensei and other things since then. The room was dead silent as she spoke, all of them staring at her in bewilderment and confusion to such a tale. And then after some time, she finished speaking, leaving them quiet and in thought.
Katara took a deep breath as she watched the principle close his eyes and go deep in thought, feeling a few beads of sweat fall down her brow as she waited for anyone to speak in the room. And then, the principle opened his eyes and looked right at her.
"Katara, if you could wait outside for us please. There are a few things we must discuss in private." he said to her.
At first she opened her mouth to speak, Katara decided to hold her tongue and nodded in response. She stood up and walked towards the door, looking up to Aizawa with pleading eyes for any form of help. He simply turned back to the principle and stayed silent, leaving her in a frayed state of mind as she walked outside and shut the door behind her. The Four in the room stayed silent for a few moments as Nezu hopped down from his seat and walked over to the glass overlooking the campus.
Once again, Snipe was the first one to speak, gripping his head and sighing. "This seems too crazy to even believe… especially from you Aizawa. You really believe this girl?"
Aizawa gave a small nod. "I do. I even tried deactivating what I thought was her quirk and it had no effect on it."
"But even if that part is true, how can you be certain what her motives are? She-
"She risked her own life to save me when we were attacked at the USJ," Aizawa snapped, closing his eyes to calm himself, "If she really were here for a hidden motive, she would not have done something like that."
Nezu continued staring out to the campus as he analyzed the situation. "And how many others know of this truth?" he asked.
"Her guardian, Tensei Iida, and the chief of police are the two that know the full truth besides me."
"hmmm…" Nezu turned and gave a small smile to the questioned teacher. "I am truly surprised you decided to keep this secret for her sake. You are always the one to come forward with anything you are suspicious of."
"Because I knew you would all give me a headache about this like you are now." Aizawa groaned.
Midnight rubbed her forehead as she took everything in. "Even if this story is true, how do you explain all of this to the public?"
"We wouldn't. A student coming from an alternate reality is not something people would take lightly. Panic would erupt and chaos following it, people inciting fear of invasions or other out worldly events taking place." he looked to the teachers in the room and gripped his paws behind his back. "I hope we can keep this between us for now. The more people who know of something like this would only increase the risk of it getting out. And that is a story that would never be passed up by the media."
Aizawa grunted in annoyance to the fact this story was even published. "For them to run with this story knowing what It does to peoples heads… to do it about a young girl without even asking us for anything. This is why I hate the media."
Scratching her head, Midnight placed a hand on her hip and turned back to the principle. "But what should be done about this now? Vigilantism is already a crime, but some people can at least emphasize with the idea since they are confronting criminals. This however, is not the case. She physically engaged with a hero, especially a high profile name as someone like Endeavor. That isn't something people are going to simply look past."
Nezu sighed, having already seen a flood of messages of enraged parents asking why a "Criminal" was going to school with their child. "This indeed has put us in quite the situation. If we are not careful with this, it will cause damage to the trust people have in this school. But we are not going to throw a young girl to the wolves and let them tear at her with questioning. Like it or not, she is a student here and we must protect her as any other one."
While he was still hesitant to the situation, Snipe nodded in agreement. "Understood. But how do you plan to move forward with this now? The media will no doubt be coming to the gates any minute now."
"You are correct, so let them come and we can explain to them what happened then." Nezu gave a smile to the others as he immediately came up with the perfect solution to everything. "If you want people to forget the original story, you must come up with an even bigger one to overshadow it."
The trio of teachers looked at each other in confusion to what the little principle was trying to get at. "What are you trying to say, sir?" Aizawa questioned him.
Nezu simply smiled and pulled out his phone, going through his contacts and finding the one he was looking for. "I know the perfect solution to not only put people at ease, but to send these reporters back home with a better story to talk about."
The others were all perplexed as the little creature put the phone to his ear, immediately hearing loud screaming coming from the other end. When Nezu said the voice name however, all of them felt their blood run cold to what the principle was planning.
"You call this an idea?" Aizawa said in disbelief.
Nervous was an understatement to what Katara felt as she waited outside the office. Fifteen minutes had gone by as the teachers discussed among themselves what to do with her situation now that the world knew what she did. She began growing worried not just about herself, but with Tensei and the others. How would the world think of a hero that took in someone that appeared to break the law? And Iida… what would he think of her?
And then everyone else. Her friends… would they all be like Midoriya and Todoroki? Able to understand it was all a misunderstanding?
Her worry suddenly increased when the door opened up once more and Nezu walked up to her smiling. "Thank you for waiting here for us, Katara."
"Sir… I'm really sorry about this that happened." Katara pleaded to him. "But please, if you are going to punish me, don't put anything on Iida or his family. They took me in and helped me. They shouldn't be punished for what I did."
"It is alright Katara, I do not blame young Iida or any of them for this situation. You will have to do something though to put the people of this city at ease." Nezu stated, causing Katara's heart to drop.
She was afraid this day would come when her secret was finally revealed. She was afraid once they really knew who she was they would kick her out of the school. But if this meant that Tensei and the others would be protected then she would do what she needed to do. She gave a small nod towards the principle. "I understand sir."
"Good, now if you may go back into the office and wait there. There is something you will need to see."
"What?" Katara watched as Nezu walked passed her and down the hall, leaving her confused once again. She turned and saw Aizawa and the others waiting inside. Not sure what was going on, she walked inside and stood next to her teacher once again. She saw they were staring to the TV once again, the screen now showing a reporter standing right outside the entrance to UA with dozens of other press members waiting there. Her heart ached once more realizing how much trouble she was causing everyone here now.
"We are here at UA high school as we await anyone who will give us any answers to the mystery of what is going on with the student Katara and what happened back in Hosu. So far no one has come to us yet."
"God damn vultures…" Aizawa sneered as he watched the buzzing of reporters huddled by the entrance gates, feeling Katara tense up near him.
The gates on screen suddenly opened up, all the reporters clamoring forward trying to get a their mics up to the entrance. Katara watched as Nezu walked through the gates and faced all the people rushing his way.
"Principle Nezu, can you enlighten us on this development!?"
"Principle, did your school have prior knowledge of Katara's involvement in Hosu?"
"Why would the school allow someone like this to enter and endanger other students!?"
"If everyone can be calm and patient, all of your worries will be answered soon." Nezu calmly smiled to the crowd. "There is someone coming now who will explain everything that happened."
"Why can't you answer it for us?"
"What has she told you about what happened?"
"I understand your concern, but I am not the best one to answer your questions." Nezu looked passed the camera and smiled. "In fact, he is here now."
Katara listened as multiple gasps coming from the screen, the camera flipping around and revealing who was approaching. When it did, Katara's breath caught in her throat when she saw the single man stomping through the crowd. The familiar flames coming from his body sending a chill up her back.
"What is he doing here?"
The many reporters sat in shock as the flame hero walked through the parting crowd, the many different reporters watching in awe as the man they were asking about had shown up, his flames dancing above his shoulders as he stood next to the small principle. Nezu smiled up to him. "I am glad you were able to make it."
Endeavor's teeth ground together as he kept his back to the audience, his fists clenching in fury to why he was here. "If this comes back on me, don't expect me to keep my part of the bargain."
Nezu chuckled and looked back to the crowd. "I believe this is the best for everyone, including your reputation."
Growling inside, Endeavor could not believe he was here. This girl just wouldn't stop causing him problems since that night, and now he could not believe this was out for everyone to know. 'This had better go over the way you hope, Nezu…"
Endeavor turned around and faced the crowd of reporters, a fake smile plastered to his face. "I hope all of you can forgive the confusion that has come from this. It's all just a misunderstanding."
"Endeavor, what is the connection you have with Katara? Why did you engage her that night and-
"Engage? Please, that is not the case." Endeavor chuckled, holding back the twitch coming from his eye that wanted to come out. "Katara happened to be an enormous fan of mine, and wanted to see just what I could do, so I enlightened her with a light sparring match. I understand why some would think that was mistaken as a real fight."
"What!?" One of the reporters gasped, "you engaged in a battle with a child to-
"A battle is a harsh choice of words. She was so eager to see my quirk in action I enlightened her and gave a demonstration. If others were confused I apologize, but I assure you nothing serious is the case. In fact, that is why she was so happy she was able to challenge my son during the sports festival."
The reporters all looked around in shock to the sudden change in events, not expecting answers like this from the flame hero. "Sir, so you are saying you weren't there to stop her as a criminal?" one of them asked.
While he seemed calm, Endeavor was grateful his quirk evaporated the sweat forming on his face in frustration to what he was about to say. 'Why did it come to this….'
"There is nothing to be worried about… in fact, I have spoken to Principle Nezu here and ensured me that she will come study under me as an intern!"
The feeling running through Katara's body was not one she could even explain. What she just heard on the television was nothing she ever could have prepared herself for, sweat dripped down her face as her mouth hung open in disbelief. Couldn't even comprehend what she heard, not believing it was real even as the reporters began screaming for more questions.
"What… What just happened?"
Notes: It seems her secret is falling apart, and she has been forced to go somewhere she most definitely doesn't want to go.
Till next time!
