Katara ducked once again as another fireball rushed passed her head, shooting her stream of water out to strike. Burnin laughed and jumped out of the way in time and skidded across the floor, her face etched with the same maniacal look as Bakugo. "So the little water brat wants to play, huh? Well I'll be glad to play with you!"
"Play? You attacked me first!" Katara snapped back at her, earning a snicker from the other.
"You are the one who caused such a ruckus way back then. You realize how pissed off the big guy was after that night he met you? We had to deal with his temper for weeks."
Katara's eyes widened when she heard that. Was that the reason this woman was attacking her? Getting back at her for whatever Endeavor put them through? Whatever it was, she couldn't ask as Burnin formed a fireball in her palms.
"Time for me to see why you were such a shit stain for our agency!" Burnin yelled and chucked her attack forward.
Whipping her arms up, Katara formed a water sphere in front of her body and blocked the fire. She looked up and glared as she barely had time before another attack flew her way, dipping her body to the side and evading it and shot a water whip forward. Burnin swung her arms out forming a small wall of flames stopping the water before she burst forward through her technique, her hands behind herself propelling her body with fire. Katara glared and spun her body around whipping her water with her and slicing it forward, but Burnin dropped down and slid underneath with a large smirk.
"She's fast…" Katara whispered in surprise as she pulled her water back to catch Burnin from behind, but the sidekick flipped through the air as the water came close to catching her. Not only was she quick, but her reaction time was great as well. It was obvious this woman had a lot of experience to actual combat, much different than her classmates she had faced.
Burnin kicked off the ground into the air and shot down a blast of flames at Katara, the green flames sizzling as Katara's water blocked it again. "So you can block a fireball… big whoop." Burnin snickered as she landed back on the ground. The flaming woman popped her neck and flashed her toothy grin once more. "I've feel like I'm warm enough now. Been waiting for this moment a long time."
Katara raised her eyebrow in confusion, but before she could even say anything Burnin was on her instantly. The burst of speed from her flames was shocking, Katara barely able to duck underneath the spinning kick at her head. The waterbender glared and brought her hand up to bend, but Burnin's spinning body threw out another incoming kick and swatted her hand back down. Katara's eyes widened in surprise as a flaming fist was rushing at her face, dipping to the side as the flames licked at her cheek. Backpedaling she dodged again and again the flurry of fiery punches, each one getting closer until one struck hard into her chest sending her back.
The grinning Burnin cackled as she watched Katara fall back and clutch her chest from the hard hit, cracking her knuckles before igniting her fists once again. "Awe, is the little girl tired and wanna go home?"
The taunt caused Katara's jaw to clench, glaring as she stood back up and summoned all her water onto her hands forming two water whips. "Touch me again and you'll regret it." She warned.
Burnin cocked her head to the side and sneered. "You telling me what to do, brat? Well fine, let me see what happens when I do!"
Katara readied herself as Burnin blasted forward again, only this time Katara readied herself. She waved her arms around forming multiple ice spikes and launched them forward forcing Burnin to block with her own flames. As she shot several forward, she also sent a stream of water out and around to the side before swinging her arm back and launching it at her opponents blindspot. The attack hit square into Burnin's back, her eyes widening in surprise as she stumbled forward from the sudden strike. The womans smile flipped into an aggressive snarl as she glared up at the waterbender.
"You little…" Burnin's hands formed two large fireballs once more. "I just had this dry cleaned last night."
"Then you should knock off what you started." Katara snapped back as she brought her water back to her body.
Burnin bared her teeth and stepped forward. "I'll knock it off when you are at my feet!"
The angered hero launched one of her attacks forward as Katara formed a water shield in front of herself blocking it. As she extinguished the first, Katara hissed in annoyance and jumped out of the way of the second one. With only her canteen's amount and blocking the fire, her supply was cut in half at this point. She wasn't going to be able to keep this up, but she had no choice as Burnin came rushing towards her again.
Both combatants shot forth blast after blast at one another, neither seeming to get an edge over the other until Katara's water began to diminish. She soon had to dodge more than block, leaping out of the way from the attacks while shooting off her own ice spikes. Burnin took note of the infrequent blocking and grinned to herself, launching herself forward and flipping into an axe kick. Katara leaped back just in time and took he remaining armful of water she had shot it right at her foe, barely missing Burnin's smirking face.
"Nice try, but not good enough!" Burnin yelled as she jumped at Katara with her elbow slamming into the younger girls blocking arms. The force sent Katara flat onto her back, wincing from the unexpected strength this woman had. She had only a second before she saw Burnin's fist ignite once more, Katara swiping her hands in front of her just as her opponent leaped through the air and brought her fist down… but stopping just inches from her face. Katara felt her skin sweat as the hot flames flickered in front of her eyes, looking past to the large grin behind.
"Seems like you are out of water. Too bad for you." Burnin snickered as she beamed down to the girl underneath herself. Katara only glared at her, with her own hand still held in front of her. The next moment, Burnin felt a cold sensation behind, her smile fading as she turned and went wide eyed to what she saw. "What in the…"
Hovering just above her neck was a very large ice spike, the cold mass slowly floating in place. Burnin was confused, but then remembered that stream of water that rushed by her face moments before. She left out an annoyed sigh and glared back at the girl beneath her. "You sneaky little witch…"
"Are you done now?" Katara asked annoyingly.
Grumbling to herself, Burnin's fire flames slowly dissipated from her hand as she stood up and placed her hands on her hips. Seeing it appeared to be over, Katara lowered the ice to the ground but kept her guard up, crawling back to her feet as she faced up to the woman glaring down at her. But then, something happened that the waterbender most certainly never expected.
"HAHAHAHA! Damn, you got some spark in you, girl!" Burnin yelled out in excitement as her large grin had returned. "That was certainly a surprise for me. I like you!"
Katara sat open mouthed to the sudden change in demeanor coming from this woman. "What!?"
Burnin laughed and patted the stunned girls shoulder. "God damn that was a good warm up! It's been a while since I've seen a first year last that long against me, I'm impressed! Let's go another round sometime!"
"Uh… I…." Katara was at a total loss for words to what was happening. Shaking her head, she brushed the woman's arm off and glared up at her. "What was all that about!?"
"I wanted to see what all the fuss was about you, so figured might as well test you out the old fashioned way." Burnin responded and laughed. "I can see why you made it so far in the festival."
"But… weren't you getting back at me because Endeavor's temper?"
Burnin shrugged. "Meh, he's always pissed at something. If it wasn't you, something else would be bugging him. I'm used to it. Figured if I said that you would take this more seriously."
Katara couldn't believe what was going on. At first this woman seemed intent on getting revenge against her, but now it seemed she only wanted to test what she could do. This was all so confusing still.
Popping her neck, Burnin sighed in enjoyment and smirked down at the wide eyed teen. "Alright, I'm down for a bite to eat. Let's hit the cafe here and then I'll show you around the facility."
"The facility?" Katara raised an eyebrow in confusion. "Didn't he say you were to show me paperwork?"
Burnin rolled her eyes. "Well if you were a disappointment I would have stuck your ass at a desk like he asked me to, but you did alright."
To be honest Katara was not complaining, but was still completely taken back by this woman's sudden change. She sat in silence as Burnin turned and walked towards the side door, the sidekick stopping and turning back.
"Oh yeah, take that shit you're wearing off and put your costume on. Heroes wear their outfits on the job." Burnin pointed to the door in the back of the room. "Locker room is there. Afterward meet me through here, got it?"
"Uhh…" Katara shook her head to clear her confusion. "Alright." She glanced down at the many scuff marks on her school uniform and frowned, Which Burnin laughed out loud to.
"Don't sweat it. I'll cover for them if they are damaged. That was worth it for me."
Before she exited the training floor, Burnin kept her eye on the girl as she picked up her case and walked across the room. She fire haired woman couldn't help but grin once again. "That girl is pretty damn good. If she had more water, I may have had to take that match seriously."
"Well this was really unexpected…" Katara muttered to herself inside the locker room. She went from fighting endeavor's sidekick to suddenly being cool with her apparently. She just shook her head as she slipped her UA uniform off of her body. "I was for sure she was really angry at me in the beginning."
She did have to admit she would take this situation than being stuck doing paperwork, so she wasn't going to complain with what she got. She turned and opened up her costume case open, but when she lifted the lid her eyes widened in confusion. "Wait… what is this?"
Inside were blue robes… but they were not hers.
"What are these?" She said in confusion, her temper slowly rising up to the situation. "Where are my robes!?"
Her fists clenched in anger, enraged one of the last things she had from her old life was now missing. She teeth clenched in frustration as she assumed the school simply tossed them aside. "I swear… if they threw them out…" Her eyes then noticed a piece of paper tucked into the corner of the clothes, pulling it out and flipping it open.
Dear Katara,
Due to the damage your outfit sustained in the assault on the USJ, it was recommended the school design you a new one to replace it. The support department took the liberty in creating one to match your old design as closely as they could. Several upgrades were installed into the suit courtesy of Mei Hatsume, the student tasked to creating your replacement. We also took into consideration of your original outfit, and have stored it if you want it back.
From, Powerloader.
A sigh of relief escaped Katara's lips knowing her personal clothes were still safe. She would certainly go and get those back when she returned to school after all this. She set the paper down and focused her eyes back to the clothes inside the case. Now that she knew what was going on, she reached in and lifted the set out and let it fall open. She had to admit… she was surprised.
The new blue robes were nearly the identical color of her original clothes, but the fresh fabric was free of the many worn down spots her old outfit had begun to form. But unlike hers that hung low below her waist in the front, it was now cut higher to where it would stop above her waistline. She frowned at the idea of them changing it without asking.
"What, are they trying to make me show more skin?" she scoffed out loud rolling her eyes. Looking back in the case she saw a fresh pair of black leggings and a new pair of boots, and something else wrapped in paper. Sighing, she set the new outfit down and stripped the rest of her clothes off. "Not like I have a choice now." She said as she began putting the new outfit on, but keeping a gray tank top on underneath. She then noticed on her arm where Todoroki's attack had burned her, leaving a small light scar on her forearm.
She huffed out and play frowned. "Great. That never fully went away." She said as she continued. After she was done, she caught herself staring at the mirror in surprise.
The dark brown boots fit very comfortably over the black leggings she wore. The short sleeve blue robes she had on now fit perfectly to her body, the trim that was white on her old clothes was now a darker blue with a flowing water pattern etched in silver. the backside flowed out behind her while the front stopped just below her chest which would have exposed her midriff if it wasn't for the gray shirt underneath. While at first she was taken back by the design choice… she had to admit it looked good on her.
She rolled her eyes in amusement to the thought, but then she noticed the final item inside the case. She pulled the wrapping off, her eyes widened to a pair of gauntlets covered with blue steel. She picked them up and slipped them on, amazed at how light and comfortable they felt on her hands. She smirked seeing the new accessories nearly covered her scar, leaving only a portion exposed. She then eyed the small switch hidden under the metal by her knuckle, flicking it with her thumb up. She yelped in surprise as the top of each gauntlet suddenly popped open a small flap in the front, looking down and seeing a thin compartment inside between the wraps and the steel.
"What is this for?" She said out loud as she eyed the strange addition. She looked back to the case and saw another note, flipping it open and seeing a small description. "Gauntlet compartments. Can store 400 ML per glove… wow, that's actually pretty neat." She said in surprise.
From what she had learned, that amount was close to the size of a normal water bottle. Having two small sources like that didn't seem like much, but she knew would certainly come in handy in tight situations. "I'll have to talk to this Hatsume and thank them for the little addition." She chuckled to herself.
Strapping her canteen around her waist, Katara looked at herself one more time, giving a small smile to herself. While it wasn't the clothes she really wanted, she had to admit the new look was pretty good actually. She shook her head and smirked before putting her bags into one of the open lockers before walking out to the training room once again. She made her way to the door where Burnin told her to go, pushing the door open and finding herself in a long hallway. Standing there leaning against the wall was Burnin, the woman's eyes widening as she smirked at the newcomer.
"Well look at you, girl. Pretty sick get up you got there." Burnin said as she stood up straight. "Although you should lose the shirt underneath. Show that body off a bit."
Katara rolled her eyes at the comment. "And how does that help me as a hero?"
"Nothing in the field. For others though," Burnin snickered and tapped her thick thighs showing beneath her jacket, "It gives them something to think about."
A small blush grew across Katara's cheeks as she crossed her arms and looked away. "I'm not dressing up for a date, you know."
Burnin laughed at the teens response. "Awe lighten up, barbie! Please tell me you have some bit of humor in that body." the sidekick continued to laugh at the girls glare before turning and walking down the hall. "Alright, head on this way if you want a bite of anything. If not, you can sip on that water you got. And… hey what do you call yourself?"
Katara raised her eyebrow in surprise. "He didn't tell you my name? It's-
"No no I know your name, kid." Burnin cut her off. "What's your hero name?"
"Oh. Well, I wanted to go by Ryujin. The water dragon."
Burnin looked back with a curious look. "Pretty bad ass I'll say. Can you make a water dragon?"
Katara blushed suddenly to the question. "Uhh… well I haven't tried to do that."
The fiery sidekick laughed. "You call yourself that and haven't even made one yet? HAHA! Quite gutsy if you ask me! I like it though!"
Katara frowned at the comment, not sure if it was genuine or sarcastic before following after the woman down the hall. As they walked, Katara noticed some of the glares she was receiving, obvious some of the other people here weren't happy with her being there. Katara kept her composure, but internally was fuming at this situation. 'Great, I'm forced to come to place where not only Endeavor hates me, but seems like everyone that works here is upset at me for what happened.' She sighed internally.
She then looked back to the woman in front of her, to the one she thought would be most upset. Her mind still spinning on this situation. "So you are Endeavor's sidekick?" Katara asked.
"Yep, number one right here!" Burnin smirked and pointed a thumb at her chest. "Anyone gives you shit here, you come to me and I'll straighten them out."
"Thanks but…" Katara noticed another set of eyes glaring her way as they walked, "If you are his sidekick, why aren't you upset like everyone else? I did fight your boss."
Burnin waved her hand. "Oh please, you were able to tango with Endeavor for a few minutes. I had to see what this girl was about! And then seeing you in the festival? Damn that was a show! Besides, it seems his kid already kicked your ass, so it felt good for me."
Katara exhaled and rolled her eyes. "He didn't kick my ass. It was a good match and-
"Hey, he was standing and you weren't. Therefore… kicked." Burnin jeered at her expense, the bluntness of this woman making Katara's eye twitch. Although loud, she would take this treatment over what she expected to happen. She then thought of everyone else and wondered how much better there internships were going than hers.
Across Tokyo, a large dojo training floor was occupied by a hero and two teenagers. Standing in her hero costume, Momo Yaoyorozu panted as she readied herself for another engagement. Standing across from the teen was Edgeshot, the ninja holding his sword at the ready.
"Again."
Grunting out, Momo focused and conjured a sword forth and gripped it tight. "I'm ready."
She tried to watch his approach, but his speed was far too great and he was on her before she could even blink. She reacted as fast as she could bringing her sword up to block his attack, the speed of his swings causing her to gasp with each strike. She tried jumping back giving her space, her hand glowing as she created a knife and threw it towards him. His sword casually smacked it away as he raised an eyebrow. "Better…" He muttered quietly before rushing forward again.
Momo prepared to create another weapon, but her eyes widened as he brought his sword up and swung down at her head, the teen jumping back and falling to her bottom. She tried crawling back to her feet, panicking as she saw him rushing her once again. She stood up as fast as she could, bringing her sword up to block his continuing strikes until her weapon was knocked freed. She yelped out as she watched his sword swinging forward once more, her mind panicking as she formed a shield to block his attack. She continued to block the strikes, both of her arms bracing up to stop the attacks. In the next moment though, they did stop, the panting teenager looking over her shield to see what was happening. Her eyes went wide as she saw he was gone before her legs were swept out from behind, landing with a hard thud and a sword pointed at her face.
Edgeshot's eyes showed disappointment to the girl beneath him, slowly waving the sword in front of her. "You chose to take your eyes off me for your defense." he said as he turned and walked back to his starting position. "Run it again."
Momo clenched her fists and stood up from the ground for the tenth time, glaring at the ground. For the last twenty minutes she had been told to spar with the number five hero, but every time he quickly overwhelmed her and made her try again. "you haven't told us why we are doing this, sir! And whatever it is, I can't do it!" she yelled out in frustration.
Edgeshot sighed and sheathed his sword back onto his side. "That's enough for now. Take a seat on the side."
Momo mouth fell open in confusion, but dropped her head in disappointment and gave a bow. "I am sorry for snapping, sir. I was just frustrated." She apologized.
The hero gave a silent huff and held his hand to the side. "Take a seat, please."
The tightness in Momo's chest increased, worried she made him upset to her lashing out. She slowly made her way to the edge of the mat and knelt down. She looked over to her left at Bakugo sitting there, the angry teen tapping his knee impatiently as he shifted in his outfit.
"Is it finally my turn now?" Bakugo growled out.
Edgeshot gave a small nod. "yes it is. Please step forward now."
Bakugo's mouth curled up into a large grin. "Alright, finally!" He hopped to his feet and walked forward. "Just watch this, ponytail. This is how you are supposed to fight."
Momo couldn't help but clench her hands in frustration, knowing that he would certainly do much better than she did. If this was to see what she was capable of, she for certain was a disappointment to the hero.
Bakugo cracked his knuckles as he made his way onto the mat and faced up to the hero. He knew in a straight fight he couldn't actually win, but giving up was certainly not something he would ever do. He couldn't help from smirking in excitement to show off what he was able to do. Edgeshot stood straight as he reached behind his bag and grabbed onto something hidden. "Are you ready?" The hero asked.
Bakugo hissed in excitement and got into his fighting position. "Let's do this."
The ninja hero closed his eyes and whipped his arms forward, and Bakugo braced his body ready for whatever came his way. His eyes watched intently for the… "What the hell?"
Bakugo's mouth fell open in confusion as Edgeshot suddenly pulled out a small teapot and several teacups. The hero knelt down on the floor as he casually poured the drink into the cups. Yaoyorozu was also at a loss for words to what was going on, also in shock realizing he had that stuff on him the whole time and she never even realized it.
Edgeshot simply smiled under his mask and held his hand open to the drinks below. "Bakugo, if you could please take a seat." he calmly said.
The vein on Bakugo's forehead pulsed outward in fury. "What the hell is this?! Why does ponytail over there spar and I don't?!"
"There is no need to spar with you. Please join me."
Grinding his teeth, Bakugo forced his body down and glared down at the drink before him. "What the hell is this about now? Are you going to test me or not?!" He yelled out.
Edgeshot simply raised his eyebrow to the comment. "Test you?"
"Yeah. I can tell you were testing ponytail earlier, seeing how good of a fighter she is. So I'm ready to do the same thing now."
Edgeshot crossed his arms and closed his eyes. "You are partially correct, but no. You are already being tested now."
"What?!" Bakugo growled and clenched his fists. "How the hell is sipping tea a test?!"
The ninja simply sighed and looked passed the glaring teen to the girl sitting quietly. "Miss Yaoyorozu, would you kindly join us?"
Momo was surprised by the request but quickly nodded. "Y-yes sir." She stood up and made her way onto the mat and sat back down next to her angry classmate. She looked back and forth between Bakugo and Edgeshot in silence as she grabbed the teacup she was handed.
With them both before him, Edgeshot nodded and crossed his arms. "Now, you both must be wondering why you are here under me." he asked them.
Bakugo scoffed and leaned forward. "It's obvious you saw what I can do during the festival. Why did you pick up ponytail, though?"
Momo glared at her classmates comment, but couldn't lie to herself and believed it to be true. "I am curious as well to why you gave me an offer, but I truly appreciate the time you are giving me, sir."
Edgeshot gave a nod to the polite girl. "I should be thanking you. In fact, you two are the only ones I gave offers for, and I am quite lucky you both chose me."
His words were certainly a surprise for Momo. "We were the only ones? But neither of us won."
"Your placement has nothing to do with why I chose you two. Miss Yaoyorozu, you have one of the most versatile quirks I have seen in a long time. And Bakugo, your quirk along with your natural talent are among the best I have ever seen for a first year. However, none of those are the reasons I chose you both."
Bakugo eye twitched as he sat there. "Then why the hell did you pick me then if it has nothing to do with my quirk?"
Edgeshot sighed and stood up. "That will be it for today. Go and make yourselves comfortable for the evening."
Both Bakugo and Momo sat in disbelief as the pro turned and began to walk out of the room. "Wait, that's all for today?" Momo asked.
"Wait a damn minute!" Bakugo yelled out and stood up in anger. "What the hell is with this avoiding the question shit?! Why are you not telling us?!"
Edgeshot stopped walking but kept his back to the students. "It seems if you can't figure that out, then perhaps I made a mistake and you can't learn from me."
Bakugo's eyes widened in confusion before he glared once more. "What the hell is your deal you damn ninja? You bring me here with ponytail and make us not even know why you brought us?"
"Bakugo, calm down." Momo pleaded to him, afraid he was going to make this situation worse. She watched as Bakugo began stomping towards Edgeshot ignoring her, and then back to Edgeshot. She was about to apologize to the pro, but then noticed his right hand twitch slightly and pull on a thin wire. Her eyes tracked the miniscule cable out to where it ran, gasping in shock as she saw its placement. "BAKUGO, STOP!"
Hearing her yell behind him only made Bakugo angrier as he stopped and turned towards her. "What the hell is your deal, ponytail?! Stay out of my business or I will-
"You should be thanking her for not taking a step forward." Edgeshot cut him off as he raised his hands and tightened the wire even more, causing the line to snap even tighter across where Bakugo's neck would have run into it. The teen's mouth shook slightly to how close he was to being cut, looking passed the cable to the hero glaring his way.
"Once again, your emotions kept you from observing your surroundings." Edgeshot coldly stated as he let the wire fall slack. "Emotional. Impulsive. Arrogant. Those are the flaws that define you, Bakugo. You have more raw power than many pros, and yet you let your feelings cloud your vision. Your defeat in the festival showed that clearly to the world, unable to accept the truth."
The hero then turned his gaze to the shocked girl behind the snarling Bakugo. "And Yaoyorozu, you have potential to become so much more, but you are holding yourself back; Overwhelmed easily. Lack of confidence. Failing at thinking out of situations. Those are your faults needing assistance."
Edgeshot crossed his arms behind his back and walked up to the glaring Bakugo. "I chose both of you because I am disappointed to see so much talent go to waste, but to learn from me you had best to listen to these words. If neither of you can accept these flaws inside of you, then I have nothing to teach you. So, what is your choice?"
Both students sat in silence to the words that were spoken to them, but each took it their own way. While Bakugo growled and hated the criticism he was hearing, Momo felt her heart tighten to his scolding. She then realized the sparring this morning was simply to test her reactions, obviously exposing her flaws. And the tea sit down was to test Bakugo's patience, once again showing his true colors.
Stepping forward, Yaoyorozu gave a deep bow to the hero before her. "Thank you for telling me this, sir. Please allow me to learn how to improve."
Edgeshot gave a small nod of approval, looking towards Bakugo. "And you?"
While he internally disagreed with what he heard, Bakugo clenched his fist but held his tongue back. He looked away and grunted. "Fine."
Giving a slight chuckle, Edgeshot looked back and forth between his two new disciples. "Good. Now, let's begin."
Across Tokyo in the Hosu district, Tenya slowly walked down the street in his costume as he followed his pro of choice Manual. The young man in blue turned and smiled to the teen behind him. "So after we finish patrols in this district, we will head east and see if anything else shows up." He explained to the intern.
Tenya gave a small nod as he looked around. "I understand. So you walk the streets on patrol and look for crimes." he said in response.
"Well, not just crimes. Being a hero means anyone could need assistance." Manual said as he looked forward. "I have to say, I am surprised you chose my agency. I assumed you must have received some very impressive offers other than mine."
"It seemed like a good option for me." Tenya answered, looking away from his lie. "I appreciate you giving me this opportunity." His eyes looked back and forth between buildings, hoping to somehow catch a glimpse of the man he was looking for.
Manual stopped walking as he was hesitant to ask what was on his mind. "You came here for the hero killer, didn't you?"
Tenya felt his heart jump at the question, his face obvious of shock even from behind his helmet. "Wh-what? What do you mean that-
"Hey, I understand…" Manual huffed out and turned to the taller student behind him. "I heard what happened to your brother, and would understand why you would be upset. It's… kind of obvious why you would want to come to this city after what happened. But… I will warn you now that a hero should never use his power for personal vengeance."
Tenya sat there in silence as the man continued speaking, how hero licenses are given so only those people are allowed to use their quirks in public, and they should never be used for personal motives. And yet… everything he heard was going in on ear and out the other. He was here for one reason and one reason only… to find that man and bring him down. Of course he couldn't say something like that, only standing straight and bowing to the man he interned under.
"I understand, sir. I will do my best to follow your teachings." Tenya said to him.
Manual gave a small smile and rubbed his head. "Well in normal circumstances I probably would have turned down your choice of coming here, but with the recent events happening more heroes have come to Hosu recently. With the extra pros patrolling here, I am certain that horrible man will be brought to justice soon."
The two continued on in patrol in silence for a few minutes before Manual decided to break the silence once more. "I must say, you were quite impressive in the festival. You did pretty well against… that girl."
That last part of the pros statement caught Tenya's attention. "That girl?"
Manual sighed out loud. "That girl Katara. The one who was on the news." he looked back to Tenya, his face etched in confusion. "I'm still confused on what's going on, but that whole story with Endeavor was certainly not the case. I was there that night too."
Tenya's eyes widened in shock. "What? You were?"
"Yeah… the police chief came to me afterward and asked me to keep that whole night under wraps, but it seems the news finally got the story so everyone saw it now." Manual shook his head. "I'm still thinking about what happened that night. And her being a fan of Endeavor was definitely not true. She had no idea where she was and what was happening."
"Manual, Sir!" Tenya suddenly yelled out surprising the hero. After months of curiosity, it seemed he finally found someone with more information about the girl that moved in with his brother. "What else can you tell me about Katara?"
The day flew by surprisingly fast for Katara as she followed Burnin around the agency. After they ate a quick lunch, the sidekick showed the waterbender what the place had to offer including the different training rooms, the main office room, and the several rec rooms for relaxing after work. As they made their way down the halls, Katara couldn't help but frown at the other glares she continued to receive from the other people there. She looked back to the woman in front of her, thankful once again to have at least one person treating her okay.
By the end of the day as the sun set, Burnin led the young teen to the living quarters and pointed to the door on the side. "So this is gonna be the place your sleeping in. Just keep your mess to a minimum, I hate filthy animals."
Katara rolled her eyes but smirked at the woman's comment. "I got it."
Burnin grinned and pushed the door open and walked inside. Katara followed in and saw it was a decent sized room with a bed, couch, and its own bathroom. She was surprised that she was actually getting her own room here, half expecting she was going to have to sleep outside of Endeavor's office. "Well this is pretty nice." Katara said as she came inside.
"Yeah, it's not bad." The sidekick walked over and flopped her body on the bed, stretching her arms and letting out a deep yawn. Burnin closed her eyes and kicked her feet up and sighed. "Just make yourself comfortable over there."
"What?" Katara was not confused at the situation, glancing over to the couch on the side. "Wait… is… is this…"
Burnin opened her eye and snickered. "What, you thought I was gonna let you take my bed?"
"Your bed?!" Katara yelled in surprise. "Wait, so he's making me share a room with you?!"
"Oh shut up. I'm the one having to give up part of my room." Burnin shook her head in annoyance. "Consider yourself lucky. When he first told me I had to keep a close watch on you, I almost made you sleep in the bathroom. Turns out I think you're pretty cool, so I'll let you take the couch."
Katara rubbed her head in frustration. "Fine. Thanks, I guess. So… you live here?" She asked, earning a shake from the flaming woman.
"Nah, this is just my own pad to crash when I'm not in the mood to go home. So I won't be here every night." Burnin suddenly sat up and glared at the waterbender. "But one rule… Bed is off limits, even when I am not here."
Katara raised her eyebrow at the statement. "Uh, sure. Okay I will-
"Serious." Burnin patted the mattress below. "This is mine. No one else. So if I come back one morning and find you sleeping in it, I will roast your ass right then and there. Got it?"
Katara sweated slightly at the threat, the angry look she was getting not any form of bluff. "Okay okay, I got it."
Burnin grinned once again and flopped back onto her back. "Good! Alright, I'm gonna take a quick nap. You just do… whatever you wanna do for a bit."
As the sidekick laid back and closed her eyes, Katara huffed out and leaned into the couch. She was certainly surprised by how her day had turned out so far, having arriving to this place and immediately having to ward off Endeavor's top sidekick, to that woman being perhaps the only one who would look at her in the eyes. Not to mention the sudden surprise of her robes being replaced with new ones. Her mind then went to her friends and how their internships were going again, remembering Midoriya getting what seemed to be an older and retired hero. But the one she thought of the most was the one she had come to know first.
Her hands came up and gripped her forearms in worry as she thought of where Iida had gone off to. She knew exactly what he was trying to do, and could only hope the other heroes found the hero killer first before he could go and do something reckless. She pulled out her phone and opened up the contacts, tempted about calling him now to see how he was, pushing the call button and putting it to her ears. After a few rings, she heard the call end. She slipped it back into her pocket and
"Please be okay…" She whispered to herself.
The sudden grumble to the side broke Katara's thoughts. Frowning to Burnin's open mouthed snoring on the bed. Not wanting to hear that at the moment, she got up and walked towards the door, figuring might as well walk around this place and get a better feel about it. She was a bit skeptical about going around the facility without Burnin though as she didn't know how the other people here would treat her.
"Might as well face them since I am stuck here." she huffed out and pushed the door open walking out and nearly running face to face with someone walking by. She stood back ready to receive another harsh look, but widened her eyes in surprise to who it was. "Todoroki?"
Shoto looked back to the waterbender in surprise as well, the teen wearing his UA tracksuit. "Katara? What are you doing back here?"
"I was just shown the room I will be staying in. I thought you were out with your dad on patrol?" She said back to him.
He gave a grunt and looked away. "We just got back. I was heading to my room."
Katara frowned at that. "You have your own room, don't you…"
Shoto raised his his eyebrow curiously. "Yes. Did he not give you one?"
The sudden snore behind Katara gave away her answer as she huffed out. "Apparently he thought Burnin should keep an eye on me, so he stuck me in her room. Didn't want to hear that now so was going to look around."
"Burnin…" Shoto exhaled slowly. "I remember her. She caused you trouble I assume."
Katara gave a small shrug. "Actually… she's been okay." She said, figuring leaving their little sparring session out of the details. She looked back to him and smiled. "You want to talk somewhere quieter?"
While he was going to get his own space, Shoto didn't mind for some reason and gave her a small nod. Shutting the door behind her, both of them walked down the darkened hall together as they made their way away from the loud snores of Burnin. As they did, Todoroki couldn't help but notice the new outfit she was wearing. "When did you get a new costume?"
"Oh this?" Katara said as she looked down at herself. "Apparently the school made a replacement since my old one got damaged. It feels good, but… a little surprised by the changes they made."
Shoto noticed her eyes looking down to the spot where her robes would have exposed her stomach, seeing the shirt she kept on underneath. He then noticed the small frown on her face, giving a small sigh out. "You don't like the changes?" he asked her.
"No. I mean… they aren't bad. It's not that I don't like them, it's just they didn't even ask if I wanted them changed and-
"I think it looks good."
Katara looked up in surprise to his remark, this being one of the first times he actually heard him say a compliment. She couldn't help but smile in response. "Thanks. What about you? What happened to your white costume you had?"
Shoto looked down and sighed. "I wore that since it was designed to help spread the cold across my body. But not that I am using my left now, that outfit is useless for me."
"Really? Well why don't you make a new one then?"
"I don't need one for now. Until I figure out my powers fully, that should be what I focus on."
Katara thought about responding for a moment before letting it go. The two of them made it outside the building at the end of the hall, the doors leading out to a large patio overlooking the city. The setting sun cast a bright orange glow over the sky, illuminating the buildings for a little longer before the nights darkness took over. While she didn't want to really be at this agency, she had to admit this place had quite the view.
"It looks so different from up here than from the ground." Katara said in awe to the sight. She glanced over to her companion nearby, seeing him stare off into the distance. She noticed his mouth open slightly as he took in the sight. "You okay?"
"Yes. It's just…" Shoto looked away for a moment before looking back at her. "I saw her."
"What?" Katara turned and faced him. "Saw who?"
"My mother."
Katara's heart jumped in surprise, leaning up from the railing and looking at him "You saw her? When?"
"After the festival. I went and saw her for the first time in years. It was hard but… she was there. And she was happy to see me."
She looked over at him with a curious gaze, taken back by what she saw. Everything about him had changed since the beginning of school. His tone, his outlook, even the look on his face throughout the day. Before it was etched in hate and anger, but now it was like he was a completely different person.
Katara couldn't help but smile and clap her hands together. "That's great! I'm really happy for you!"
Shoto watched her excitement for him, still taken back by how open and friendly she was to him after everything he did against her. "Thank you."
Katara nodded in excitement. "Oh course! I'm glad you are able to make up with her. What made you change your mind?"
Looking into her bright blue eyes, Shoto felt his own chest tighten as he thought about what to say before looking back out to the skyline. "It was what you told me."
"What?" Katara's mouth fell open in surprise to his answer. "What I said?"
He gave a small nod. "You showed me how foolish I was, holding onto my past and losing what I had. Yet you dealt with more than that, and proved you can overcome it."
Katara stared at him in silence for a few moments, realizing how much she really affected him. She looked away and gave a soft smile. "Well, I am glad you and her are talking again. You should always keep that bond when you have it."
Shoto noticed the change in her words towards the end, turning back to her as she stared out to the fading light. He could see the look of sadness hidden behind her smile, a similar pain he always carried with him. He was unsure if she would tell it, but he had to know.
"Katara, you… remember what happened to your mother?"
The waterbender's heart jumped to the question he put onto her. She had told it many times to others, but no matter how many times it still brought forth those horrible memories. She looked at him and gave a small nod. "Yes. It's a day I'll never forget."
Shoto watched as she gripped her arm, obvious the pain from her past still holding onto her, He was about to say she didn't have to tell it, but she continued on before he could.
"I was little when a group of soldiers raided our village. There was fire everywhere, and I ran to find my mom. When I got to our house… someone was already there." Katara exhaled as she remembered the eyes of that firebender looking at her, the eyes she would never forget. "I ran to get my dad for help, but by the time we got back…"
The story brought a single tear to Katara's eye as she went on, wiping it away as Shoto listened in silence. When she finished, he was struck in awe to what she went through, making him realize why she reacted to his father the way she did when they meet. Fire… her mother. It had to be connected.
And he scolded himself to how much of a fool he was. Here this girl truly lost her mother, where he still had his right there and chose to avoid her. He stared in awe to how she was still so strong, even after what happened to her and be how she is now.
"I am sorry Katara. For everything." Shoto looked down in pain. "I tried putting my pain into anger towards you, and yet you dealt with something far worse than I did."
Katara gave a small smile back towards him. "It's okay. I learned that while she was gone, I had so many other wonderful people there for me. I had to make sure they stayed safe, so I wanted to be strong to protect them."
Shoto looked back to his left hand, clenching is fist in frustration. "All that my father cared about me for was to be strong. And yet because I refused it for so long, I can barely control my left side."
Hearing that brought an idea into Katara's head, the waterbender reaching up and patting his shoulder. "Well, this place does have training rooms…"
"Yes, what about them?" Shoto asked curiously as she crossed her arms.
"How about I help you practice using your fire?"
