Stretching her arms, Katara walked across the training room floor as she turned and faced Todoroki. The waterbender couldn't help but chuckle at where they were. "Seems like we are fighting each other again."
"We aren't fighting. You said this was training." Shoto blandly responded.
Katara rolled her eyes and smiled. "I was being sarcastic. Now… you said you wanted to learn how to use your fire more, right?"
He gave a small nod. "Yes. I don't have the proper amount of control yet."
Katara cracked her knuckles and nodded in return. "Alright then... best way to learn is just to use it. Try attacking me only with your fire, so no ice right now."
Huffing out, Shoto raised his left hand and ignited the fire from his palm. He stared at it for a moment before looking back up. "Okay. I will do that."
Popping her canteen open, Katara bended out a stream and circled it around her body. "Go ahead. I'm ready."
Taking a quick breath, Shoto stepped forward and shot forth a stream of flames from his hand. Katara quickly whipped her arms forward and blocked the fire from reaching her. As the steam lifted out of the way, Katara circled to the side while she eyed the flames coming again. The waterbender swiped around, whipping the water up and diverting the flames away from her body before bringing it back around herself. "Not bad. Keep it up." She said to him as he nodded and shot his attack again.
The pair of them continued this routine, with Shoto shooting forth his fire while Katara would be his testing dummy. For saying he wasn't experienced to his left side, she had to admit he seemed pretty adept to it. She did, however, note that these streams of fire he was shooting now were much smaller than the ones he attempted at her during their match. After a few more minutes of their pattern, both had worked up a decent sweat, but Katara noticed his wasn't from the fire. It was more from nerves instead. "You okay?" She asked him.
Shoto grunted in annoyance and looked to his hand. "I am trying to keep them from getting too large. It's been quite some time for me."
Katara raised her eyebrow curiously as she watched him bring his hand forward and shoot out another small stream of fire, keeping her eyes on how he shot it from his open palmed hand but kept his fingers close together. As she blocked it again, she noticed how he was pushing the flames out, but his arm was tensing as he tried to maintain the size. She stood up straight and lowered her hands. "Don't try to force the fire smaller. Just go with it." She tried saying, only earning a frown from her sparring partner.
"I am trying that, but every time I release it, I have to focus and think how to keep it from growing."
As she watched him continue this same way for several more minutes, she could recognize the annoyed look on his face from the process, having to think constantly about the size of his fire. It seemed he knew well enough how to actually use his left side, but the fine-tuning control was definitely lacking. Suddenly, an idea popped into her mind, one crazy enough it could work.
"Hey, hold up for a minute." She said as she stood upright and bended the water back into her canteen. "I want to see if something else can help you."
"What?" Shoto asked as she walked over towards him. "What do you have in mind?"
Katara crossed her arms and thought for a moment. While she certainly knew his quirk operated differently than bending, she was hoping some of the principles were at least similar to one another. And when it came to firebending, she had seen enough of it in action and training to get a decent idea of the basics. Thinking back to the many days she watched her old friends practicing, Katara knew where to start.
"Back where I'm from, there were… fire quirk users, that I was good friends with, who knew tricks to control. First is a simple basic technique of breathing."
"Excuse me?" Shoto stared at her curiously to the statement. "Breathing?"
Katara nodded. "Yes. Fire breathes the air, right? Then it should be the same to when you make it. First, create a small flame in your hand."
While he was skeptical to this idea, Shoto figured he could give it a try at least. "Alright then." he answered before igniting a small fire about the size of a softball in his palm.
"Now, close your eyes and focus on the fire in your hand." Katara instructed, watching him stare at her for a moment before he did what she said. "Keep your mind on that fire, but take deep breaths in through your nose and out of your mouth."
Shoto did what she said, taking a deep inhale before letting it flow back out. He did this over and over, keeping his eyes closed as he continued. Katara watched the flames in his hands dance, noticing the fire flicker just a bit every time he took air in. "Feel the breath connect with your fire, and how it grows."
At first, he felt this was pointless, but after several more breaths… he could feel something. Every time he took a deep inhale, he could feel the heat in his hand rise slightly before disappearing with an exhale. He kept it up, the odd sensation seeming to get stronger the more he focused on it. He couldn't keep his eyes closed anymore, staring down intensely to the small blaze. He breathed again, and to his amazement he was right; the fire grew with his breath.
"That is…" Shoto paused as he watched the flame grow with each deep breath he took. Something so basic he had never even thought it could affect the flames he created. "That is something."
Katara chuckled at his puzzled face, happy that her idea had worked. "That's great. Now keep that in mind as you use it more."
Shoto closed his fist, extinguishing the fire out. He looked over to the girl next to him and nodded. "I will remember that. Thank you."
Smiling, Katara looked down and adjusted the gauntlets on her hands. "Well I don't have much else to offer, but there are a few other things I think you can try-
"What is going on here?"
The two of them froze to the familiar voice behind them, turning around to see Endeavor scowling. Katara frowned seeing him again, crossing her arms in front of her. "We were just training a little." She said.
Endeavor scoffed and looked to his son. "Training?"
"Do you have a problem with us training?" Shoto growled at his father.
"I brought you here so that I could show you how to be a hero. She, however, is just here because of the mess she created." Endeavor shot back, glaring at Katara. "You should be grateful I even let you step foot in my agency. If I could, I would have let the whole world see the truth."
"Oh, and what truth is that?" Katara glared back at him. "That you tried to fight a young girl on the streets who was lost? Not very hero-like."
The vein on Endeavor's forehead pulsed out from the comeback. "Just watch your tongue and remember your place. And where the hell is Burnin?! She was supposed to be watching you!"
Katara caught sight of Burnin rounding the corner behind Endeavor, the sidekick's eyes going wide as she flipped a quick 180 and went back the other way. 'Nice backing us up there.' Katara grunted internally before looking back up at the pro. "Is there something else you need?"
Huffing out, Endeavor cracked his neck and turned around. "I suggest you get rest. This place does not allow sleeping in."
Watching his father walk out of the room, Shoto sighed in annoyance to his relation to that man. "Perhaps I should have gone to another place to intern under."
"Maybe…" Katara scratched her head and chuckled. "But then I would be stuck here alone with him."
Shoto looked back to the smirking waterbender, a small smile forming on his face to her comment. "I think you would end up fighting him again."
Katara's eyes widened suddenly, her mouth falling open in amazement. "Wow, now I know something is wrong with you."
"What?" Shoto's eyebrow raised in confusion. "What do you mean?"
"You just tried to make a joke, didn't you?"
Shoto sat quiet as Katara laughed at his confused look, the dual haired teen shaking his head and pulling his phone out, checking the time. "It is pretty late actually. Perhaps it would be best that we get some rest. This place always gets up early."
As if on cue, Katara suddenly felt a yawn overcome her. She rubbed the back of her neck and sighed. "Yeah, maybe you're right. Burnin seems set on getting me used to this place, so I should get some sleep too." she mumbled out.
Nodding, Shoto walked towards the door with Katara following behind. They made their way back to the hall where their rooms were located, the fire wielding teen looking to his left hand again. "This friend of yours who you learned this from… you know of other ideas as well?"
Katara looked over at him with a small smile. "I mean it's not much, but I can try and show you a few things next time we can."
Shoto slipped his hands into his pockets and looked away. "Okay. I shall leave you for the night then." He said as he began walking down the hall towards his room.
Katara frowned playfully to his still bland demeanor. "Okay. Goodnight." she called out, making him stop for a moment.
He glanced over his shoulder to her words before looking forward again. "Goodnight."
Watching him disappear into his own room and close the door, Katara couldn't help but smile to herself to how much he had already changed since the festival. It didn't seem like much, but simply saying goodnight felt like a huge step for someone like him. She turned and opened the door to where she was staying, walking in and slipping her gauntlets off. She sighed and set them on the couch, frowning knowing this was going to be where she was sleeping. "Looks cozy." She jokingly groaned out.
Suddenly the door behind her opened again, revealing Burnin coming in with food. "Oh, thanks for vanishing earlier." Katara mumbled sarcastically.
Burnin glared and kicked the door closed with her heel. "Hey, he was pissed, so I was staying out of that one." She said in defense and huffed out. "I work with the guy, so I know when to get involved and when not."
"So even though you were mentioned, you left us there alone?" Katara retorted, earning a scoff from the sidekick.
"Ah, you're still here, so what are you crying for?" Burnin grabbed one of the rice balls from the tray she was carrying and tossed it over. "I was hungry again, so figured screw it."
Katara caught the ball of food and sighed. "Well, thanks."
Eating the food in silence, Katara glanced up and stared wide eyed to her roommate. She couldn't help but stare as Burnin attacked her tray of food like a beast, scarfing down bite after bite like nothing. The young teen quietly finished her small rice ball and looked away with a small blush, laying her head back on the couch behind her as she stared up to the ceiling. She didn't even know how long she sat there, her mind going over what was being quite an eventful day. Before she even realized it, her eyes had closed as her mind tired, falling off into a deep sleep.
At the small Manual agency in Hosu, Tenya sat quietly on the bed he was given at the end of the night. The teen stared to the wall in utter confusion to what was going through his mind. He was already in enough of a wreck about finding the hero killer here in the city. Even after being told he should not go after him, Tenya couldn't just let it go. There was no way he could just let this horrid man get away from what he did to his brother.
"Brother…" he mumbled, also bringing forth the next thing confusing him.
Manual had told him everything he knew about what happened the night Katara mysteriously showed up in the city. How she was completely confused to everything and incapacitated him like it was nothing. And that her battle with Endeavor was not the "fan request" that was pushed in the news. But what confused Tenya the most was the fact that his brother was actually there that night as well. He brought his hand up and rubbed it through his hair.
"Tensei… what is going on?" he said out loud. "You knew what Katara did, and you brought her into our home."
He pulled out his phone and looked into the contacts, his finger struggling to keep from pushing dial on Katara's number. He wanted to ask her for the truth, to finally figure out what was going on. But his thumb just couldn't lower itself. He set the phone down and clasped his hands over his face. "This is too confusing. Everything has changed so much." He also was going to have a long talk with his brother when he could as well.
Tenya sat there in silence on his bed, laying back and staring blankly to the ceiling above himself. He couldn't even focus as his mind replayed so many scenarios in his head. Eventually, he lost track of time before his thoughts went blank, exhaustion taking over and his eyes closing for the night.
"WAKE UP!"
"AHH!" Katara yelped in shock from the sudden yell in the room, falling off the couch in a jumbled mess. She rubbed her head from the hard fall she took and tried to focus her vision, still groggy from waking up suddenly. After a few seconds, she was able to make out Burnin standing there, a massive grin on the woman's face.
"What was that for?" Katara grumbled out as she yawned and sat up.
Burnin cackled and swung her arms around to stretch them out. "Time to get up, girl. Off to hit the day."
"Day?" Katara questioned as she looked out the window, the sun not even visible in the darkness yet. She looked down to her phone and felt her eyes widen in shock. "It's five in the morning!"
"Exactly! No time to waste here!" Burnin laughed as she twisted and popped her back. "No sleeping on the job, now get your ass off my couch!"
Growling out in annoyance, Katara stood up from the ground and rubbed her eyes. She was never a big morning person, but this was ridiculous! She slowly made her way through the room and out the door after Burnin, the flaming sidekick seemingly itching to go. Katara then noticed Shoto coming down the hall from his room, his eyes not looking tired in the least.
"You are used to this, aren't you…" Katara grumbled as he approached.
"I have always been an early riser." He blandly responded and adjusted his belt. "You look tired."
Katara gave him a deadpanned look. "What gave it away?"
"Alright you brats, let's get on with it!" Burnin yelled out to the pair of them with her hands on her hips. "Time for your morning workouts!"
Blowing out her mouth, Katara groaned as she attempted to stand straight. "I want to go back to sleep."
Two Hours later
The sun had now been up for about an hour, lighting up the Japanese lands. Beyond Tokyo in the Yamanashi district, a worn-down apartment building's front door opened up as Izuku Midoriya yawned and took out the trash. His ragged eyes were barely staying open as he took the garbage out, yawning from the lack of sleep he had from the night of practice he had attempted.
"Still not able to control One for All yet…" He mumbled to himself. "I thought I would get here and I could figure it out pretty quick. But…" His eyes looked to the couch where-
"You look like you didn't sleep well."
"GAH!" Midoriya yelped out from the voice behind him, flipping around and panting in surprise from the elder pro standing there. "Oh, g-good morning sir!"
The hero Gran Torino was certainly not what Midoriya had expected when he arrived. Sure, he expected him to be older, but this man looked to be barely below eighty! The man didn't even reach the teen's chest in height, his loose-fitting white outfit sloppily hanging over his body. The oversized yellow boots and gloves seemed like they would have been for a full-grown man, and his yellow cape dragged behind. The older man had decided to keep his old accessories even after he shrank with age.
"So, you stayed up all night trying to go over what I told you, huh?" Gran Torino sighed out in disappointment, causing Midoriya to blush.
"Uhh, well, I did what I could. It just seems no matter what I try, I can't put One for All really into my moves without damaging myself." Midoriya said in response. He looked back to the older man, the pro staring blankly at him for several seconds.
…
…
…
"Who are you again?" Gran Torino happily asked.
"I'm Midoriya!"
Izuku frowned in confusion to the man's question, still lost thinking why he went from senile to strict and focused in what seemed like every ten seconds. But… he knew this man was certainly strong. When he arrived yesterday, the seemingly fragile old man began rocketing around the room, his speed almost impossible to keep up with from his jet quirk. Just with how rough he was with training made Midoriya realize why All Might was frightened of him. How strong he must have been when he was younger!
"Now come on, you young whipper snapper! Let's get some grub going!" Gran Torino happily cheered as he walked into the kitchen.
Midoriya sighed and walked in after the elder, his eyes widening in surprise as he saw a large plate of frozen Taiyaki pastries on a large plate. "Huh? B-but aren't those desserts, sir?" he questioned.
"Oh, there is nothing wrong with a snack in the morning. Go on and get them cooking!" Torino chirped out in excitement and sat at the table.
"Uh… alright." Midoriya shook his head as he picked up the plate and stuck it in the microwave, luckily it barely fitting inside. After turning it on, he sat back as his mind began spinning. This whole time he noticed how Gran Torino seemed to know exactly what his problems were; admiring All Might to the point of shackling himself down, overthinking situations, and other things. What made him frustrated was that his new mentor would always avoid straight answers, instead wanting him to figure it out by himself.
'How am I supposed to figure out what I don't know?' Midoriya whined internally before hearing the microwave beep. "Oh, it's done sir!"
"Oh, this is a great way to start the morning!" Gran Torino giggled like a school kid when the plate was brought before him. He smiled wide and picked up one of the fish-shaped pastries. "Gotta eat them while they're hot!"
Chomp!
"It's cold!"
"What?!" Midoriya gasped in shock as Torino threw the still frozen pastry at him. "B-but I cooked it like the instructions said!"
Torino glared and hopped down from his seat to look in the microwave and then to the plate. "You idiot! You forced a giant plate in there, didn't you?!"
"B-b-but that is the plate you gave me!" Midoriya panicked in his defense.
"You dummy! You forced it in there and didn't give it room to spin! If it doesn't spin, then the heat won't spread evenly!"
"I'm sorry sir! If you want I can-
Wait.
That last statement that Gran Torino said right there stuck out in Midoriya's mind. He looked down at the plate and the frozen food, noticing that only some of the corners had defrosted properly. He then looked to his fingers, seeing some of the slight disjointedness from breaking so many times. All of those times he focused on the power inside of him and put it into a single spot… instead of….
"Gran Torino!" Midoriya snatched up one of the pastries and held it up. "This Taiyaki… is me!"
The old retiree stared at him in confusion. "Uh… no it isn't. Are you alright there?"
"Uh.. no no, not that!" Midoriya dropped the food and stood back from the table, his eyes wide in amazement. "I realized what was the problem now. This whole time I imagined One for All as some form of switch… turning it on and off and only focusing it in a single spot."
Clenching his fists, Midoriya began concentrating on the immense power flowing inside of him. This time however, he didn't just put it into his arms or his legs. This time… he put it everywhere.
'To use that power throughout my entire body…' he whispered inside, his entire body giving off a slight glow to the immense power of the quirk spreading through himself. 'Don't put it in one area. Spread it out evenly, to every part of my body at once!'
Traces of green energy sparked out around Midoriya's body, the intense power enveloping all of his limbs, torso and up to his face as well. 'Use it continuously, to the most my body can handle at the moment!'
As he watched the energy glowing around the teen, Gran Torino couldn't stop the large smirk that appeared on his face. 'It didn't take long for him to figure that out. This kid sure is a bright one.'
The elder pro dropped the cane to his side and walked towards the youngster. "So, you finally get what I was hinting at. How do you feel?"
Midoriya grunted as he felt his body trembling from the energy inside. "I-it's a little rough. It's hard to keep this going."
"Well then, how about we test it right now then?"
Huffing out, Midoriya could only grin in excitement. "Yes sir!"
Finishing her third set of abdominal crunches, Katara grunted and sat back up to wipe the sweat off her forehead. She panted several times and crawled back to her feet, stretching out her back and looking up to see Burnin on the squat rack next to her. The waterbender's eyes couldn't help but widen in disbelief as the woman cranked out a few more reps, her large legs shaking slightly as she pushed up 175 KG before dropping it back down on the rack behind her.
"Phew! There we go!" Burnin panted out with a grin as she shook her legs loose, looking over to the teen staring at her. "You gonna give that a try?"
"Yeah, that's not happening." Katara said bluntly as the sidekick laughed.
"Figured that. You better get your ass on something else, we got five minutes left."
Sighing out, Katara stretched her arms as she looked around as the other people did their own workouts as well. She had learned that every morning, the sidekicks here were mandated to do a two-hour workout before they headed out to work. It was designed to wake up the person for the day, and ensure they had at least some physical exercise, even if not much hero work was accomplished. While she at first was completely opposed, Katara had to admit it did feel good to relieve the little stress she was feeling in her mind.
She glanced over to Shoto on the side, watching as he continued to rise up and down from his pushups on the mat. She walked over next to him and stood under the pull up bar. "I have to say," She paused as she leaped up and grabbed hold of the bar. "This… isn't what I normally do… but it feels pretty good." She said, pausing between reps.
Shoto pushed out a few more of his own before he stopped, panting a few times before crawling back to his feet. "It's good to work out regularly."
"Yeah… I… know!" Katara grunted as she forced out one more, dropping down and catching her breath. "But still… do we have to get up so early?"
"It is so the day is free for other duties, you dweebs." Burnin shot out as she approached the pair, the sidekick throwing a towel to each of them. "Not bad for your first mornings, but don't try to slack off. You are to step it up every day!"
Katara gave a grunt as she wiped the sweat off her face. She looked down to her body and frowned at the sight of several sweat patches over her outfit. Waving her hands, she bended the moisture out from her clothes and onto the towel, feeling cleaner now. "That's better." She sighed out and looked over at the clock on the wall. "So, this long every morning, huh?"
"Yep. And don't even think about trying to dip out. I'll make sure you are up with me." Burnin snickered and laughed at the glare she received.
"I can't wait." Katara groaned out and dropped the towel on the ground. The door suddenly burst open on the side of the room, everyone snapping to attention immediately. She looked up and felt her frown grow when Endeavor walked into the room, the large man's presence felt in the very air.
"Good morning, Sir!" all of the attendees said in unison, all except the two new teens joining the group. The pair gave each other a quick glance before they turned back to the pro walking inside.
"Now that you have all finished your morning routine, go and grab breakfast before you get to work. I need my schedule cleared like yesterday, so take care of any appointments that were made today." Endeavor ordered.
"Yes sir!" the group of sidekicks all answered together before exiting quickly. Burnin gave one last stretch before grinning at Katara. "I guess you got your paper duty today."
Katara glared as Burnin chuckled and walked by, leaving both her and Shoto alone before Endeavor. She sighed out and stood to attention before him. "What is to be taught today… sir." She forced out in the end.
Endeavor looked down to the girl standing there, a small bit of pleasure internally to seeing her so annoyed being here. He then turned his attention to his son. "Shoto, we will be out for the entire day. Be ready for a long haul."
Shoto sat there in silence, his own eyes looking in disdain to his father. He then glanced over to Katara who was gritting her teeth due to being ignored. "What about Katara?"
"What about her?" Endeavor questioned.
"If she is here, it is beneficial for her to learn how heroes operate." Shoto shot back, earning a raised eyebrow from both Katara and his dad.
Endeavor scowled at the remark. "The only reason she is here is because I had to make a damn deal with that principal of yours. But that doesn't mean I have to take her with me onto the streets."
Katara clenched her knuckles in anger so hard she felt her nails dig into her skin, but, to her surprise, Shoto was the one to speak first again.
"Then I will stay here as well."
"What?!" both Katara and Endeavor yelled at once, but while the hero yelled out in fury, Katara's was of shock and confusion.
"What do you mean stay here?!" Endeavor yelled out. "You would sacrifice time in the field to spend it here with her?!"
Shoto simply stared up to his father, his face not changing. "If I am going to learn, it is only fair that she learns as well. If you won't take her, then I have nothing more to gain from you either."
Katara's mouth fell open in disbelief. She couldn't believe what she was hearing right then. "Todoroki…" she muttered out.
Endeavor's eye twitched in annoyance at the ultimatum. He could have just gone and let Shoto stay here with her, but he needed him to come and watch how to truly use fire in combat. And by the stern look his son was giving him, Shoto knew it as well. Endeavor also knew that he understood how much he didn't want Katara here, so he must have been using this to get under his skin.
And unfortunately for the pro, it was.
"Grrrr….. fine!" Endeavor growled and turned to leave. "She comes too. But If she gets in the way, then she's not just coming back here, she's leaving this agency!"
As the enraged hero stormed out, Katara just sat in disbelief to what had just happened. She looked over to Shoto still staring at his father, his face still unchanged. "Why did you do that?" She asked him.
Shoto turned towards her and stared. "Did you want to stay here?" He responded.
"Well no. I mean… why did you just say you would stay here too? If I get made to stay here, you shouldn't let that affect your progress."
"Because you helped me…" Shoto said solemnly. "It is time I returned the gesture to you."
Katara was stunned in silence from his words. Coming from the boy who couldn't even look at her before, it was hard for her to believe this was the same person helping her. She couldn't stop the smile that grew across her face. "Thank you. I… don't know what else to say."
Shoto did not smile back however, his eyes going forward once more. "I think it is fair for you to be there tonight, too. You should be given the chance to see him brought to justice."
Katara's smile faded at the seriousness in his voice, her heartbeat slightly increasing from the tone she heard. "What do you mean?"
In the next few moments, Katara felt her blood chill from the answer she received. Her eyes widened in shock, images of Tensei in the hospital flashing in her mind once more. Her heart beat faster in her chest and she was swallowing the lump in her throat from the single sentence Shoto said to her.
"My father is going after the hero killer."
Later that day
The dirty karaoke bar counter was wiped up once again as Kurogiri cleaned up the spilled drink. The warp user sighed out as his eyes shifted to Shigaraki sulking on the counter as usual. The grungy young man swirled his new drink in his fingers, slipping off the hand attached to his face and sipping the whiskey down. His fifth since this morning already.
"Tomura… perhaps you should lay off that for now."
Slapping the glass down on the counter, Shigaraki hissed out in frustration and placed the severed hand back onto his face. "Shut your mouth, Kurogiri. I need something to clear my head."
Kurogiri huffed out to the attitude his master's disciple was throwing. "He may not have been able to avoid the authorities for now. It would be best if we can-
"You told him that if he was interested, he was to show up here." Shigaraki grunted out in anger, reaching up and scratching his neck. His bony fingers scraped hard one more time before he picked up the glass again. "It has been almost a week and that bastard decided to just ignore us."
The glass in his hand suddenly shattered from the dagger flying through the air, the chunks of glass and the alcohol splattering on the counter top. Both of the bar patrons turned in surprise, looking into the shadows of the open doorway. They stood up as the quiet footsteps grew louder until the lone figure's red eyes shined in the faint light.
"I was here, but decided to keep my distance and see who was throwing me an offer…" the blade covered assassin answered as he entered the room. "So far I am not very impressed."
Shigaraki hissed out as the blood dripped from the cuts on his hand because of the glass shards, but he chuckled in amusement to the visitor in the room with him. "So, you were watching me for some time, weren't you… Stain."
The Hero killer sneered as he looked around the bar, eyeing the warp user standing there, ready for anything. "Ignoring you would have been easier for me. I was already scouting out my next targets in Hosu, but I figured to hear out what was so big you had for me."
"Oh, but of course…" Shigaraki grinned under the hand covering his face as he sat back down on the bar stool, signaling Kurogiri to relax. "Someone as famous as you would be a perfect asset to my goals."
Stain raised his eyebrow to that statement before snickering. "So, it seems that you were the ones that attacked UA, and you are looking to add me to your numbers. So, what is it that you are aiming for?"
"Well, I really just want to kill All Might, and I want to destroy anything that pisses me off…" Shigaraki pulled out a stack of photos from his pocket, the top one an image of Midoriya from the sports festival. "Like this little brat."
The words he heard brought a cold glare to Stain's eyes, realizing exactly what kind of person this Shigaraki was. "I was a fool to even be interested in this. I hate your kind more than anything."
"Huh? What is that supposed to mean?" Shigaraki grunted out in annoyance.
"The goals of your league are that of a pouting child," Stain hissed as he brought his hands to the knives on his side. "What is the point of killing if there is no conviction to your motives?"
Kurogiri narrowed his eyes as he watched the blades slowly pull out from their sheathes. 'The hero killer Stain. His victims have been heroes, but he has never targeted civilians. Tomura only cares about destruction.' He said to himself as he turned and looked to the flickering TV in the room. "Master, should I step in?"
"Let it happen. Perhaps this is the only way for him to learn anything." The cold voice coming through the screen. "I need him to learn how to grow from this, to mature. Eventually Tomura will reach his potential, so I will not intervene here."
Stain snickered at the remarks from the blank screen. "It seems the master has abandoned his mutt. I wouldn't blame him though, a worthless dog that can't be trained should be put down."
"What the hell are you saying?" Shigaraki growled and got back up to his feet. "You had better watch that tongue of yours before I kill-
The knife flew out so fast that Shigaraki didn't even see the blade until it was already embedded into his shoulder. Kurogiri's eyes widened in shock, turning to go after the hero killer. Before the warp user could even shift into his cloud form though, Stain had leaped over the counter and slashed deep into his arm. Kurogiri hissed from the sharp pain, feeling the blood spurt out from the cut. He growled and went to turn back towards the assailant, but his body suddenly locked up instantly. Every muscle and joint frozen in place. All he could do was shift his eyes upward, looking over to see Stain already pinning Shigaraki to the ground with a knife into each shoulder.
"Ouch… aren't you being a little rough now?" Tomura sarcastically hissed out from the ground as the blades dug deep into his flesh. Stain only grunted as he pushed the knife deeper.
"This world is swarmed with fakes that call themselves heroes, but it is also filled with villains like you; People that flaunt their power for personal pleasure are just as guilty of the impostors that I am after. Don't just assume I am some mindless thug like you that wants to kill everything before me."
Tomura glared through the fingers over his eyes. "Your rambling is annoying. Kurogiri, take this fool out of here."
"I- I can't move…" Kurogiri's body only twitched as he attempted any form of movement. "It must be the hero killers quirk."
"Damn you… what do you think you are doing?" Tomura growled and reached his hand up, grabbing around one of the blades in his shoulder. "If you continue messing with me... I'll kill you."
Stain's eyes widened as he looked down to the knife crack between Shigaraki's fingers, the steel disintegrating before shattering into dust. Tomura hissed from his back. "You talk about conviction, hero killer. I don't need anything as pathetic as that in my life. So why don't you get off of me!"
Shigaraki's hand reached up towards Stain, the assassin leaping backwards and avoiding the touch as he kept his blade in front of his body. He eyed the strange quirk user curiously as he stood back up. "That is quite a destructive power you have there. A perfect fit to a loose-minded fool like yourself." Stain taunted earning a grunt from Shigaraki.
"You bastard… the last of my injuries were just healing up." The blood dripped down Shigaraki's arms while he hissed in frustration. "I invite you here and you do this to your host. You are a terrible guest."
"I came out of curiosity, but it seems that the goals we have are completely against one another. However…" Stain's mouth curled into a small grin as he stared at the intensity in Shigaraki's eyes. "This was not all in vain for me. I can see we both want to the destroy the present system that enshrouds this world."
"I am done listening to this chatter. Go on, leave… drop dead for all I care. I will go on with my own plans with or without you. And if you get in my way, you'll be dead too."
Stain's eyes narrowed to the warning he heard, letting a small grunt escape his throat. "There is some drive inside of you, however twisted your conviction may be. How will it bloom, I wonder? What it manifests into could be something interesting to see." He sighed and sheathed the knife back onto his side. "Either way, my business is done here. I did my part and came all the way here, now you can return me back to Hosu now. There are still fakes that I must purge before my work is done there."
The setting sun cast a deep orange glow over the Hosu district. The people on the sidewalk suddenly watched in awe as the number two hero walked by them. They stared in amazement that they got to see the high ranked hero in this city now, several people moving out of the way as Endeavor marched down the road. Their eyes then noticed the two teenagers behind him, immediately recognizing them from the sports festival and the news recently. Katara's weary eyes looked back and forth, but not because of the people around her.
It was because of where they were.
After they left the agency, the pro led the two teens across Tokyo, scouting for any crimes that happened to pop up. Most of the day, Katara followed in silence. Partially due to the fact that she and Endeavor barely spoke, but it was mostly due to the plan later that evening. Endeavor's plan was to search Hosu after dark, since the hero killer mostly worked in the cover of night, he was eager to find the criminal and show that he was the one who brought him in. Looking over his shoulder, the flame hero stared at the girl in blue before sighing.
"It seems amazing how many things keep leading you back to me." Endeavor said out loud.
"Huh?" Katara turned back towards the man leading her. "What do you mean?"
Endeavor glanced to the people around him, making sure they were out of hearing range. He grunted and cracked his knuckles. "After that… interesting night, you end up staying with Ingenium. And now, I am here with you again, hunting down the one who attacked him."
Katara looked down as she thought about the interesting twist herself. She did think it was crazy how she was here with the man she fought the very first night she arrived here, made to intern under him. The fact that she was here again brought a slight chill to her spine, no longer just the town where she first showed up in this world. It was now the site where Tensei was brought down, crippled by the hero Killer. Her eyes shot back and forth down the alleyways they walked by, her heart rate slightly up as she kept her senses ready.
Even if Endeavor was certain he could bring down this man, Katara still felt worry in her heart. She also knew Tenya was here in the city, trying to call him on the way here. As she expected, he didn't answer, causing her worry to increase. Just from the look in his eyes, she knew exactly what he was trying to do. He was looking for the hero killer himself. She knew this because she had done something similar when she looked for the man who killed her mother.
And even if she denied it to herself, there was a part in her heart who wanted to face this man as well, to understand why he would do this to Tensei.
She however had made that choice once, and didn't want to do it again. She only hoped that her friend could come to the same conclusion… or that she ran into him sometime while she was here, and stop him before he did something he would regret.
High above the city, the roof of Hosu's water tower was enshrouded by the swirling mist of Kurogiri's warp gate, the portal door forming to allow Stain to stroll through. The blade wielding killer hissed in satisfaction of being back onto his vantage point of the landscape, his tongue flicking out across his lips in anticipation. "The sun is almost down. Perfect time to begin the hunt once more." he said to himself as he heard footsteps behind. He glared over his shoulder to see Shigaraki walk through as well, before Kurogiri appeared in his normal form.
"You decided to follow me here as well, I see…" Stain grunted out.
"I just had to know… if you are so against my ideals, what kind of plans do you have in store?" Shigaraki asked in return, bringing a large grin to Stain's face as he looked out to the city below.
"I will reform this retched society. The title of hero is reserved for those who do great deeds, and yet that has been lost. This world is infested with false champions, all they care about is money and fame. And I will not stop until the world sees the truth." Stain's hand gripped the hilt of his blade and stepped forward. "Our business is done for now. And I would keep to yourself from now on. I may target all those imposters, but a criminal can just as easily fall to my blade."
Whipping out his sword, Stain leaped off the water tower and down to the roof below, bursting forward and jumping from rooftop to rooftop. Standing in the breeze, Shigaraki brought his hand up and scratched at his neck once more. "Damn him. Who does he think he is? Does he think he is actually a good guy or something?"
"I do not think he does, but I can see the reasoning behind his choices." Kurogiri interjected, bringing a scowl to Shigaraki's hidden face.
"What? Do you actually agree with him?" Shigaraki hissed out and scratched harder.
"I don't believe he thinks himself a hero, but instead as a purifier." Kurogiri hissed as he felt the slash on his arm, but watched as Stain disappeared from sight. "He may attack heroes, but every city in which the hero killer has appeared, the crime rates have actually fallen. Regardless if his actions are good or not, he does in fact bring change."
Ceasing his scratching, Shigaraki crossed his arms and sighed to himself. "Oh well, it just seems I won't be able to agree with him. And… he pisses me off. I want him to pay for screwing with me." he let out a small chuckle and looked back to his follower. "Kurogiri, bring out the nomus."
Kurogiri's eyes widened slightly to the request, but he nodded and activated his quirk once more. The portal formed in front of them, allowing the three mutated figures to walk through the gateway. One was similar to the USJ nomu but slightly smaller and no beaked mouth. The other was green and sickly thin, while the third was the height of an average adult, but tan and with wings. The creatures all hunkered out of the swirling gate and stood before Shigaraki, his eyes beaming with excitement behind the hand covering his face.
"You think you can insult me like that? Come into my place and stab me? I will make you pay for making a fool out of me, hero killer. I will kill you and destroy this entire society you claim to be fixing."
Midoriya shifted in the seat next to Gran Torino as they bounced along the train track. The hero in training looked over to the older man next to him and smiled. "I just wanted to say thanks for this, Gran Torino."
"Don't sweat it, kid. It's good to give you some in field experience, so you don't get any habits of just practicing with me." Torino responded and went back to tapping his seat. "My part of town is pretty boring, that's why we have to get out and into the big city."
Sighing, Midoriya adjusted his gloves, still getting used to the new upgraded outfit he was wearing. Since his previous one was ruined in training, the school took the liberty of upgrading it and giving him a new one. He then looked outside the now dark sky in the window, and noticed they were passing by Hosu. Knowing where he was, Ilda immediately came to his mind.
'I hope he's doing alright… He hasn't been answering any of my messages.' Midoriya said to himself. Ever since they all went their own ways, he was worried about his friend, and wanted to help him get through this hard time.
"Hey, what's that fire out there?"
"Huh?" Both Midoriya and Gran Torino looked behind at the sudden statement from the other passengers, noticing everyone on the other side of the train staring out the windows.
Gran Torino raised an eyebrow and sat up. "Hey, what's all the commotion back-
BOOM!
The side of the train suddenly burst open, smoke and screams filling the cabin instantly. Midoriya jumped out of his seat in shock from the hard impact. "Wh-What's going on?!"
Through the smoke, a hero crawled up from the ground, his body bruised and bloodied from the impact. He didn't even have time to crawl to his feet before a bony hand shot through the cloud of smoke and slammed into his face. Midoriya's eyes went wide as the grotesque green figure ripped through the rest of the train's wall, the familiar brain on the creature's head catching his attention. "A Nomu?! What's that doing here?!"
"Kid, stay back!" Gran Torino yelled out, bursting off his seat and rocketing through the air. The older hero kicked off the side wall and slammed the beast in the stomach and rocketed it out of the train.
"Gran Torino!" Midoriya ran after his mentor and to the opening in the train, looking to find the hero. But his eyes caught sight of what was beyond. "WH-what is going on?"
Beyond the tracks, Midoriya's eyes gave up trying to find the hero who just left, only able to stare at the many fires raging in the city.
Katara's eyes shot open in shock when a loud explosion rocked the city. Both Shoto and Endeavor stopped as well, the two of them looking up to see a large ball of ash and fire billow up above the streets.
"What's going on?!" Katara yelled out.
Endeavor's eyes stared up at the rising smoke above the buildings. "That's not the hero killer. it's something else." he scowled out and sprinted down the road towards it.
Shoto went to run after, but then noticed Katara still staring up in the air. "Katara, we have to go!" he yelled at her.
She didn't hear his call, however, her own mind filled with too much worry. "Iida... where are you?"
Notes: Here we go... we have made it to the part you have all asked for since the very beginning. nothing more is needed to be said.
