The bright moonlight lit up the street as Bakugo and Yaoyorozu followed Edgeshot back to his agency. The entire day they had been taken out expecting to go on a normal patrol, but instead were taken to the coastline and made to sit in meditation. They were told to sit down overlooking the sea, to clear their minds and focus on themselves; Their strengths, their flaws, and what they wanted to improve on. For hours they were ordered to sit in silence, to go over their training and how to improve personally.
Momo had taken this time to go over her loss to Bakugo, her hesitation before leading to her defeat. She then reflected on how far she had come under Edgeshot's teachings and to what she could become if she kept to his lessons. She looked to her right at Bakugo, half expecting to have heard him complain non stop to what he would call a boring lesson. To her surprise once they started, not one word was heard from the ash blonde teen. He sat silent like her, contemplating something deep inside his mind.
Edgeshot opened the door and let the two teens into his building. "I am glad you both took advantage of your meditation today. I hope you found something to set your mind to and work towards that." he said with enthusiasm.
Momo gave a small nod. "Yes sir. I hope to increase the variability of my quirk in terms of combat."
Bakugo gave a scoff, earning a glare from the girl next to him. Edgeshot raised his eyebrow at the exploding teen. "You have been especially quiet this afternoon Bakugo. Anything to share?"
"I'm good." Bakugo huffed out.
Sighing at whatever progress he made, Edgeshot nodded to the pair. "Get some rest. We will continue tomorrow."
After the ninja hero walked away, Momo crossed her arms and glared at the teen next to her. "You find something funny about what I said?"
"What's it to you, Ponytail?" Bakugo grunted and walked away, only making Momo more confused.
"You are always the first to say something to anyone, yet now you are being quiet. What did you sit and think about?"
Looking up to the ceiling, Bakugo went over his thoughts from the day over and over, now certain to what he was going to do. "I am going to finally show that damn school why I am going to be number one."
"What?" Momo's mouth dropped in shock from his statement. "Number one? Is that all you thought about?"
"What else would I be thinking of?" Bakugo growled and walked over to a nearby couch and sat down. "I played those matches I lost in my head over and over. Now I know what to do against icy hot and Deku."
Momo couldn't believe it. The entire time they were supposed to be meditating, Bakugo was actually thinking back to his losses during school and studying the strategies of his opponents. One of them in particular caught her attention. "You are going to try and fight Midoriya again, aren't you?" She questioned.
"Hell yes I'm going to. That damn loser is not going to get a victory like that over me again. Now that I know how much damage he can take, I know how to outlast next time."
Now Momo was the one getting angry, clenching her fists in frustration. "What is your deal with Midoriya? Why do you hate him so much?"
"Huh?" Bakugo looked up annoyingly to the girl glaring at him, only making him snicker. "Why the hell are you butting in? It doesn't concern you."
"Yes it does, because he is a great person and a good friend of mine. All he does is compliment and show support for everyone, and all you do is insult him. So what is your problem with him?"
Bakugo gritted his teeth at the girl, remembering how he had been noticing she was hanging out with Midoriya more recently. 'The hell, does she actually like that loser?' he thought, shaking his head of the thought before looking back down. "All that time in school growing up, he seemed to be a quirkless nobody that couldn't accept the fact of who he was. Then suddenly, he has a power that is insane. I won't sit by and let him surpass me anytime soon!"
"That's your reason? You are ridiculous!" Momo cursed at him. "All you care about is getting what you want, and the moment someone says anything you don't like, you are ready to fight."
"I don't care what people say; if I say I will become number one, then I will do it! I don't let others tell me what my limits are! You should take notes, ponytail!"
"What? What's that supposed to mean?"
"You have been complaining since you lost that fight with me, saying you couldn't do anything. You scored top in the class and you let yourself get beat so easily. Just shut it with your whining and train harder! If you don't like the way you fought me, then get stronger yourself!"
Momo's eyes shot open in shock to the statement, never expecting something like that from Bakugo. 'Did… did he just… try and support me?' she tried processing internally.
As they sat in silence for several moments, Bakugo got up and walked away. "Whatever… I'll be taking down your crush Deku once we get back to school."
"What?!" Momo's heart spiked suddenly from the word she heard. "C-crush? What do you mean?" She stuttered out.
Bakugo grunted in annoyance. "Oh shut it, ponytail. I have seen you hanging with Deku more lately, and all you do is ogle over him. Why you would over that loser, I have no god damn clue."
Momo's face burned red as he spoke, crossing her arms and looking away. "H-he's just one of my best friends! We are nothing more!" She suddenly felt a tightening in her stomach after saying that, a small frown forming on her face. "I don't... like him in that way."
Rolling his eyes, Bakugo walked on down towards his room. "After all the crap you try and say about me, at least I say what I want. You can't even be honest with yourself."
As she was left alone, Momo's mind was racing just as fast as her heart was at that point. "I'm not lying… No." shook her head at Bakugo's words, sitting down on the couch as she rubbed her hands together. "He's just a good friend of mine. I mean…" She felt her stomach tighten again after she said that, frowning to herself.
She thought back to the beach when she saw him, remembering how she felt warm after he took his shirt off, especially after the incident in the water. But then she found herself in that hallway alone and crying, he was one of the two that came to give her comfort. He was always there to make sure she felt better, and she couldn't deny it did feel good every time they were together. And then… Bakugo's statement, causing her cheeks to warm up again.
"Do I… feel that way?" She whispered to herself, still confused with these new feelings. Suddenly her phone vibrated startling her, pulling it out of her pocket and feeling warm again to who called. "Midoriya…"
Taking a breath to calm herself, she answered the phone and brought it up. "Hello?"
"H-hey, Yaoyorozu! J-just calling you back! How was your day?!" Midoriya's voice echoed over the phone.
She couldn't help but smile at his bashfulness, feeling her mood pick up just hearing him. "Hey Midoriya. I've had… quite a day actually."
Mina stretched her arms out behind her as she sat down on the couch in her room. Her muscles were sore from yet another combat training day at her agency, groaning as she felt her shoulder pop. "Damn, Uraraka wasn't kidding when this guy makes you fight a lot." She chuckled and slumped in her seat.
She was about to reach for the sushi on the table when she noticed her roommate standing there staring at her phone with a blank look on her face. "Uhh, you okay Uraraka?" She asked.
The gravity girl gave a fake smile and nodded. "Yeah yeah, all good! Just… tried calling Deku to see how he is doing! And he didn't… answer."
Mina raised her eyebrow curiously at the girl, watching her tap her phone in her hand. "I mean he could be busy. After what you happened and him being in the hospital and stuff. He may be doing something now."
"Mhm…. He text me back. He's… on the phone…. With Yaoyorozu…." Uraraka's eye twitched slightly at the name she spoke out, sitting down on the couch next to her friend. "Just two friends… talking!"
"Uhhhh…" Mina watched cautiously as Uraraka snapped her chopsticks apart rather forcefully, a large fake smile plastered across her face. "You okay?" the pink girl asked.
"Oh everything's fine!" Uraraka grabbed one of the pieces and shoved it in her mouth, still forcing her smile. "Nothing's wrong with two friends talking together! Nothing at all!"
Mina couldn't help but form a small grin on her face, Leaning forward on her hand. "So, him talking to Yaomomo doesn't bother you?" she smugly asked, noticing the twitch on Uraraka's eyebrow again.
"No… why would something like that bother me?!" She forced out as she gripped another piece.
"Because you like him?"
"EEEP!" Uraraka yelped in shock, smashing the sushi piece between her chopsticks as she turned deep red. Her wide eyes looked at the smug look on Mina's face, bringing her hands up and waving them frantically in front of her. "Wh-wh-what are you talking about?! I don't like Deku! Never! W-we are friends! Just friends!"
"Uh huh…" Mina giggled to herself and leaned back on the couch again. "So… no feelings at all?"
"No no no! No feelings!" Uraraka's face was beat red at this point, bringing her hands and cupping her burning cheeks. "D-Deku and I… no no nothing!"
"Hmm…" Mina fake sighed and looked up to the ceiling. "That's a shame. With Midoriya being so cute and single, I am surprised he hasn't been taken yet."
Uraraka's eyes widened slightly to the last word she heard. "Y-yet?" she stuttered out.
Mina gave a quick nod. "Well sure! I mean… I don't think he has asked anyone out yet, either."
Looking back down to the table, Uraraka's red face suddenly became more relaxed. "I m-mean th-that's okay! He's just shy…" She sighed internally, knowing he wasn't taken, causing her to burn up again. 'Even if he was, why should that bother me?!'
While the gravity girl burned up, Mina couldn't help but grin internally. She had noticed how Momo had been growing closer to Midoriya ever since the day at the beach, and she knew the feeling was mutual the other way around. Despite that, neither had made a move forward yet. After what she just learned now, she couldn't help but throw in a little challenge. She knew she would have to text her other friend later and get a little curious.
'Okay Yaomomo… if you don't take a shot, Uraraka's gonna block you down. Maybe with a little competition you will grow a backbone and go for it.' Mina chuckled and grabbed a piece of sushi, relishing in the taste and the situation she just made.
Katara's tired mind stirred from her sleep, groaning in content from the good rest she received. She let out a small yawn, smiling as she shifted her head against the warm cushion. She didn't know why, but she felt so much more comfortable on this couch than the one she slept on in Burnin's room. Either way, she was enjoying this and didn't want to get up. She forced her eyes closed and pressed her cheek against the cushion, enjoying the warmth she felt coming from it and wrapped her arms tighter around-
The feeling in Katara's hands suddenly caused her mind to wake up, rubbing her hands along the form, realizing it was an arm. Her heart began beating faster as she then felt what she thought was the cushion shift underneath her head, her ears picking up soft moan to her right. 'Wait… I was tired… and sitting next to...'
Something then shifted on top of her head, rubbing the top of her hair and pressing down on top of her forehead. Her eyes forced themselves open, shifting up and moving her face… until she suddenly felt her face burning up, seeing she was practically rubbing her nose against Shoto's sleeping face.
"Ehh… I…AHH!" Katara screamed out and shoved him in the chest, eliciting a yelp of shock from the freaked Shoto. "What do you think you are doing?!"
"What the hell?!" Shoto shook his head from the sudden awakening, rubbing his eyes as they focused. "What are you doing?!"
"Me?!" Katara's reddened face glared at the other teen. "You were… laying on me!"
Shoto's eyes widened at her statement, his own cheeks reddening when he remembered what happened the night before. He looked away and frowned. "I… no I did not. I just passed out on the couch as well."
"Yeah? Then why were you laying your head on me? Were you not good with your own spot?!" She sneered and scooted a little further away.
"No, I didn't do that on purpose," Shoto grunted out and blushed more. "You… were the one who grabbed my arm and I couldn't leave."
Katara's cheeks were the ones to burn now, looking down at his arm and remembering where her hands were wrapped around. She rubbed her arm and frowned. "I… I… I was tired! I didn't know what I was doing!"
"And you get mad at me?" Shoto sighed and rubbed his face, still shocked from the sudden scream in his ear. "We were sitting there and you fell asleep. I went to sit you up and you held onto my arm. I…" He grunted, trying to avoid those final thoughts he had before he fell asleep. "… I ended up falling asleep too."
Katara groaned in embarrassment, looking down at her feet and took a deep breath. "Let's just… forget this, okay?"
"I won't forget this."
Both of their eyes shot open to the sudden voice to the side, looking over to see Burnin leaning against the wall with a massive grin on her face. "Now that is a sight to remember." the sidekick snickered out.
"What…" Katara glared at the woman. "How long were you just sitting there?!"
"Well I came to find you since it's time for workouts, but when I walked in here even I was surprised," Burnin gave a wink at the waterbender, chuckling at both of their embarrassment. "It was so adorable I just had to wait and see your faces."
Frowning, Shoto stood up from the couch and rubbed his head. "We just fell asleep. Nothing happened."
"Uh huh… that why you both were red as tomatoes?" Burnin rubbed her chin chuckling as he scrunched his face in annoyance. "Anyway, get your asses up and to the gym. I don't care if you came out of the hospital yesterday. Let's hit the weights!"
As the sidekick left the room, the pair of teens sat in silence, trying hard to avoid eye contact after their awkward awakening. Katara rubbed her arm, but gave a small smile after a few moments. "So… sorry about shoving you." She said.
Sighing out, Shoto gave a small nod. "It's alright. I understand why you would startled."
Chuckling, Katara stretched her back and grunted. "Well, I guess we are up now. So we should just… get on with our day."
"Yeah, probably would be the best." Shoto rubbed his neck, taking a deep breath. "I won't mention this again if you prefer."
Katara rolled her eyes and laughed. "I mean it… wasn't that bad. We were just sleeping. Let's just get on to training."
"Yeah, that's a good idea." Shoto said as he slipped his phone back into his pocket. He glanced up as Katara walked towards her room, his mind replaying those thoughts he was having the night before. Shaking his head, he tried avoiding those ideas, focusing on what was to come next.
Over the next few days, the routine had been the same for Katara. Get up early for working out, and then working at the agency learning the many things that come along with a hero, something she especially struggled with.
Paperwork.
The waterbender groaned as she rubbed her temples, her brain pulsing from how much writing came with this. After the events in Hosu, Endeavor was not keen on taking her or Shoto out on patrols, the dual haired teen also working on the desk next to her. She leaned on her hand and frowned. "So this is all part of being a hero?" she asked.
"There are many documents that must be filed for legal reasons," Shoto answered as he filed another document. "That is why some like my father have people that work for him to do it."
Groaning, Katara laid her forehead down on the table and huffed out. "This is the last day here and didn't expect to have to do this junk."
Shoto leaned back in his seat in annoyance as well. Internships ended tomorrow, and they had not gone out to any patrols since the incident with Stain. He clenched his fist in frustration, once again his father the center of his anger to making them sit idle here. He glanced down at his phone and sighed, seeing they had been doing this for four hours today. "I am nearly done. We still have five hours of time to finish what we have."
Looking up and seeing her shrinking pile of pages, Katara gave a small smile and stretched her arms. "Well, how about a break then? It would feel good to stretch a little bit."
Shoto looked up at her curiously as she stood up. "A break? To do what?"
"How about a little more training? I need something to clear my head." She suggested.
While he wanted to just finish his things, Shoto couldn't deny he was growing restless stuck at a desk like this. "That's fine. I can finish up afterward."
Smiling seeing him put his pen down, Katara led the way as they exited the office and headed down the hall towards the same training room they had used earlier. While on their way, Katara noticed the looks she was receiving from the others here were not as harsh as before. She wasn't sure if it was Burnin putting in a mouthful to tell the others to back off, or perhaps they realized being angry wasn't going to help so they gave up finally. Either way, she would take what she got, sighing in relief she wasn't being glared at anymore.
Once inside the room, the pair faced each other down and got into position. Wanting to continue what she had showed him from before, Shoto ignited his fire as she pulled out a stream of water from her canteen. "Back to fire again?" She asked with a small smirk.
"More training would be good for my control." He responded quietly, raising his fire covered hand up.
"Alright then, lets try it again." She shot forth her stream, the water colliding with his flames in a steamy flash. The two continued their exchanges, circling each other around the room and matching attack for attack. As he shot forth his flames, Shoto would focus on his breathing as well, feeling how his pattern could help alter the fire he expelled.
'This is still so new…' He said internally, dodging a smaller stream she sent out before shooting forth another blast of flames. He exhaled just as he released his blast, feeling the fire seemingly flow like his breath. He couldn't help but smile internally, still grateful to her tip for his quirk.
While the two continued their duel, Endeavor happened to be passing by the hall, his eyes turning and widening in surprise to what he saw. "What the…" the hero growled out in annoyance. "What are they doing out of the office?"
"I gave them a break."
Endeavor turned around and saw Burnin leaning against the doorway behind him, the sidekick chomping on an apple. "You were the one who allowed this? Just because you are second around here doesn't mean you get to let them slack off." He demanded.
"Hey I told them they could do it so what's the big deal?" She lied, the woman having no idea they were here until now. She simply loved getting a kick out of seeing him glare as she took another bite. "Besides, you gave them a deadline, so if they hit it what's the problem in having a break?"
Growling, Endeavor looked back at the two teens in the training room, neither of them noticing him standing there as they trained. Burnin swallowed her bite and looked as well, eyeing the blue eyed girl who whipped her water forward again. "She's not that bad, you know…"
Endeavor raised his eyebrow and looked over curiously at his sidekick. "What was that?"
Burnin nodded towards the waterbender. "The kid. I mean she's a hard headed one, yeah. Even if you don't like her, you can't deny the girls got some damn good skill."
Endeavor's face formed a scowl at her words. "Are you actually saying you enjoyed her coming here? That girl has caused me nothing but trouble since the day she showed up in Japan."
"Hey, I'm just saying boss…" Burnin took a final bite before throwing the apple core in the trash. "The past is the past with her. I know you are still pissed, but even you got to admit she ain't some criminal. Besides, she seems to have changed the public's opinion."
Burnin pulled out a newspaper from behind her back and tossed it forward, Endeavor catching it and holding it up. His eyes widened when he saw the front page picture of Katara knelt down by a damaged car, the young girl holding the child she had delivered the other night. His gaze then drifted up to the headlines on the top.
Miracle on the street: UA Student delivers Baby!
Sometimes it is a bad thing to judge a book by it's cover, and this is one of those times. After a very confusing revelation with UA student Kairi Katara and her involvement with the number two hero Endeavor, we may have to change our initial thoughts as well. In a stunning act, Katara helped a trapped woman deliver a baby right there on the street before paramedics arrived on the scene. It was something that-
Endeavor folded the page up and grunted, looking up to his sidekick smirking at him. She had already told him what had happened that night when they returned to the agency, although he had never gone and talked to his son or Katara about it. He stared at her for a few moments before she turned and walked away. "Anyway, I kinda got a kick out of her. She's headstrong, but she's actually pretty chill when you get to know her, boss." She said as she left.
Standing alone, Endeavor turned back to the two training together. He watched as the pair continued blocking each other's attacks, their abilities perfectly countering one another. While he was still hesitant of the girl and who she was, he stared as his son shooting his fire, noticing the flames erupting outward. After a moment he let out a small sigh and turned away, not saying a word to the two that still never noticed him.
"Whoever she is, she is actually able to convince Shoto to use his left side." He grunted to himself. "If I can get him to accept his power that way, I'll take what I can get for now."
The final day of internships had come, and everyone was saying their goodbyes to the heroes that took them in. Izuku Midoriya opened the door to the old apartment building and walked down the steps, a smile on his face as he made it to the sidewalk. "Well, it is time for me to head out now, sir." he said up to the elderly man standing there.
"I'm not gonna say it has been smooth sailing, but you are pretty good, kid." Gran Torino chuckled out. "I haven't moved so much in quite sometime."
"I appreciate what you did for me, sir," Midoriya gave a bow to the gray haired pro. "I'll thank All Might for your training."
As the teen began walking away, Gran Torino called out one last time. "Hey, by the way… How are you again?"
"What?!" Midoriya gasped at the bland look on the heroes face. "I-I'm Mid-
Izuku's eyes widened slightly when he finally realized what he was asking, his face becoming more stern. "I'm Deku."
Grinning at the answer, Gran Torino turned and went back inside, not needing to say anymore to the teen.
"I want to thank you two for taking the time to come to my agency." Edgeshot smiled under his mask to the two students before him. Momo and Bakugo were back into their school uniforms, the trio standing in front of the train station. "I hope you both have learned valuable lessons as well."
Momo gave a large smile and bowed to the ninja hero. "I really appreciate everything. I hope to not disappoint you."
He nodded to her words. "I know you won't. You take in information like a sponge, and I only see you getting better from here on out." He reached behind his back and tossed a small box towards her. "Here."
"Huh?" She caught the small box, eyeing it curiously before opening it up. Her eyes widened when it revealed a collection of kunai blades, shuriken, and smoke bombs. "You are giving me this?"
"The basics for offense and defense. Practice with things like this and you will only grow from there. And if you lose them… I'm sure you can make more."
Momo giggled at his joke, bowing once more to him. "Thank you, sir. I will."
Turning his attention to Bakugo, Edgeshot smirked internally at the sulking teen. "And to you, young Bakugo…"
Bakugo looked up curiously, secretly wondering if he was going to receive some kind of sword or knife. 'Not saying I want one… but would be kinda bad ass.' He snickered internally.
Instead, he received a pat on the shoulder. "Good luck."
The vein on Bakugo's forehead pulsed in both anger and confusion as the ninja hero turned and left him standing there. "What the hell?! Why does Ponytail get shit and I don't?!" he yelled out after the pro, only earning a laugh from Momo to his frustration. "The hell you laughing at?!"
Momo smirked and walked onto the train. "You."
"WHAT DID YOU SAY?!"
As he walked away, Edgeshot looked over his shoulder at the furious Bakugo stomp after his classmate, the pro sighing out loud. "I must say, I was surprised myself…" He said to himself and turned back forward. "People like Yaoyorozu need guidance to help find their strength. Bakugo however… he needs challenge. The stronger the ones around him are, the harder he pushes to reach that plateau. Someone like him… He will find his growth in the ones near him. He will become something greater from his own determination."
"Alright, you dweebs! I gotta say that was quite the interesting week we had, huh?" Burnin yelled happily as she sent off the two teens at the train station. Endeavor was already gone on another case that morning, not that Shoto or Katara were missing him in any way. Because of that, the sidekick decided to take them down to the station.
Shoto gave a small nod to the fire headed woman. "Yes it was. It wasn't what I had expected."
"Yeah, same here." Katara gave a small smirk to her roommate. "It was certainly not as bad as I thought it was going to be."
"Well I'll take all the credit, thank you very much." Burnin laughed at the look Katara gave her. "Besides, you owe me another sparring session, so we are hitting it again sometime."
Katara playfully rolled her eyes, getting more used to the woman's personality. "Sure. I won't go easy this time."
"Yeah, you better not," Burnin snickered. "I wanna kick your ass even worse this time." the sidekick turned and walked away, "I also wanna see that water dragon trick next time we meet, too."
As they were left alone, Shoto looked over at Katara curiously. "Water dragon trick?" he asked.
Katara rubbed her head and laughed. "Well, since I called myself Ryujin, she was saying I should actually make a water dragon as a technique."
Shoto imagined the idea of her creating something like that, unable to deny that would be pretty impressive. "Is that something you could do?"
Thinking about it, Katara could only shrug her shoulders. "I mean… maybe. I have never tried bending something like that before."
"Hmm…" Shoto thought about it as he walked onto the train, "With as versatile your abilities are, I believe you would be able to do it."
Katara stood still for a moment before smiling and following him inside. "Wow, this is still all new to me."
"What?" Shoto looked confused as she sat next to him. "What do you mean?"
"You. The new you." Katara gave a warm smile towards him. "complimenting and supporting me. It's a good change."
Shoto's mouth hung open for a moment before sighing and looking away, a small smile on his face as well. "I should have been doing that from the beginning. Instead I was a simple minded fool."
"Yeah, you were pretty bad…" Katara teased, earning a frown from her friend. "but you have moved passed that, and that's all that matters to me."
Hearing that brought a sense of relief to Shoto, closing his eyes and smiling once again. As the train bounced along the tracks, he sat quiet but content to his situation now. When school started, he was filled with so much anger and hate, all he could focus on was that. And now, because of the girl he was pushing his anger towards, he was finally seeing everything with clear eyes. As the train came to his stop, he sighed out and stood back up. "I'll be getting off now. I guess I'll see you at class tomorrow."
She nodded up to him with a smile."Alright. I'll see you tomorrow, Todoroki."
Smiling to himself, Shoto made his way off the train, looking back to see her wave to him before the door closed. He watched as the train departed, staring until she disappeared from view and down the tracks. He turned and walked towards his home, not even realizing he moved a bit faster than his normal pace. For some reason, he just felt better than normal, his mood feeling more uplifted than usual. Even the walk back to his house seemed shorter than normal, arriving at his front door much faster than he expected. Coincidentally, his elder sister Fuyumi was just arriving from down the road as well, a large smile on her face.
"Shoto, Hey! I didn't know your internships ended today.'" Fuyumi said as she approached her brother.
"Yes, they just ended. You got off work early?" He asked.
"Well today is only a half day, but I have papers to grade to get back tomorrow." She reached up and unlocked the door, allowing her brother in first. She watched as he took his shoes off, curious on what she should ask. "So… how was it… with him?"
Shoto stared in silence at the ground for a moment, thinking back over his last week. "It was alright. I actually didn't spend much time with him, so it wasn't that hard in fact."
"Really?" She asked surprised, a small smile growing on her face. "That's good then! Well, I am going to make dinner if you want some too."
He gave a small nod to her offer. "Sure, I'll take some. Thanks."
As they each took their shoes off, Fuyumi couldn't help but notice the look on his face had changed. It was no longer as stern or cold as it was before. In fact, he seemed close to… well, normal. She had been noticing his mood lightening up ever since the sports festival, and it was certainly not from winning it. Then she thought of that girl who was in the news with their dad. "Oh, I remember hearing how your classmate went to dad's place too. The one you faced in the festival. The… one dad was with in Hosu."
Shoto nodded once again. "Yes. Katara was there with me. She's… been a good friend to me."
Fuyumi's eyes widened in shock to what he just said. "Wait… friend?" she questioned, still shocked from it being the first time he had ever said that about anyone. And it happened to be the one person their dad had a problem with. She couldn't help but laugh internally at the coincidence. "Well… I'm glad she's helping you. That's good!"
While Fuyumi went into the kitchen to start prepping the food, Shoto stood there thinking about that statement. "Helping me…" He whispered to himself, knowing that to be an understatement. He then thought of their training exercises they did together, hoping they didn't have to stop just because internships were over. He pulled out his phone and went to his contacts, finding her number and clicking the message icon.
Hey Katara, would it be possible we continue our training after school on some days?
He sent the message, taking off his uniform jacket and heading towards his room. "I'm going to change real fast. I'll be back."
"Okay, no problem!" Fuyumi answered as she brought out a mixing bowl.
Before he got into his room, Shoto heard his phone ring, looking down and seeing an incoming message. He clicked it open and saw it was from Katara.
Sure thing. Maybe I won't be as tired without Burnin's snoring keeping me up.
A small chuckle escaped Shoto's mouth after reading her message, thinking back to how tired Katara was the first morning there. He opened the door to his room and closed it behind him, just as the bowl Fuyumi was holding dropped and bounced on the counter top. Her mouth hung open in shock, still unsure if what she heard was real or not, for she couldn't remember the last time he had ever done it.
"Did… Did he just… Laugh?"
Walking down the sidewalk as she messaged Todoroki, Katara couldn't help but smile to herself. She was still having a hard time getting over how her friendship with him had started. After a rough patch in the beginning of school, she now was not worried about what he was going to do next when they sat by each other in class. As she exited the screen and put the phone away, she then looked up to the home she had stayed at for the last few months, sighing out as she approached. "I wonder if he told Madoka and Toki the truth as well…" she said out loud.
Much like how she felt with Tenya, living with them for so long felt wrong to keep lying about who she really was. Even though the police chief told her to try and keep others from knowing to keep the public in the dark, the longer she stayed the harder it felt to keep doing this for her friends as well. For now though, she was going to start here at least, thinking back to what Tenya said to her. "He's right. If I am staying here, it is only right that I am honest with them."
Clenching her fists, Katara took a deep breath and approached the door, wanting to be honest with them once and for all. She used the key she had and unlocked it, pushing it open and preparing to find them and-
"Katara!"
The waterbender yelped in shock when she was suddenly rushed and pulled into a tight hug, looking down in shock as Madoka swung her around the room. After a moment she was dropped back onto the ground, mouth open in confusion as she looked at the frightened face of the Iida mother.
"Are you okay? I was so worried after I heard what happened!" Madoka quickly asked.
"I… I'm fine, yes." Katara slowly answered, still surprised by the sudden embrace.
"Oh thank goodness…" Madoka sighed in relief as she reached forward and hugged the teen once more. "I would have been devastated if you were hurt as well."
At first she was confused, Katara felt her chest swell up to the words. She reached around and returned the embrace, taking in the warmth that came from the hug. She smiled to herself at the nice feeling. "I'm okay. After that night, I talked with your son and-
"Oh don't you worry about anything," Madoka growled as she stood back and wiped the single tear from her eye. "I already talked to Tenya when he got home earlier, and he's lucky I didn't ground him for the rest of the year for his stunt."
"Uh, well… that's not what I meant…" Katara looked away as she thought about how to say what she wanted to, "The thing is that-
"Are you hungry? You must be hungry after everything you went through! It's probably been a stressful week you had!" The blue haired woman quickly turned and headed towards the kitchen. "I can get something real fast. And one of these days I'll need you to tell me your favorite dishes from where you come from. We have so much to talk about!"
Katara's heart skipped a beat when she heard that last statement. "Wh-what?" she felt the hair on the back of her neck stand up immediately, already imagining what she meant. "She..."
"I told her."
The voice to her side made Katara's eyes go wide in shock, looking over and feeling her heartbeat spike. Coming into the hallway was Tensei, rolling himself in on his wheelchair. Her smile couldn't have got any larger at the sight, running over and embracing him in a hug. "I can't believe it! You're out already!" She yelled out in excitement.
He chuckled at her happiness, patting her back and smiling. "I got out yesterday. I have one more surgery but I can be home now at least."
"That's great! I'm so happy to see you out!" She stood back and observed him a little more, grateful to see his normally warm face back to what it was. "After I left the hospital I-
"By the way, you have got to tell us that story." Tensei shook his head and laughed. "I knew you were special, but delivering a baby? My mother couldn't stop talking about that."
Katara's smile fell suddenly, remembering what Madoka had mentioned in the end. "Wait, does she…?"
Sighing, Tensei gripped the wheels and pushed himself forward. "Come with me to the pool."
Following his order, Katara walked along him through the home, the former turbo hero keeping his eyes forward. "After we met at the hospital, Tenya and I had a talk about you. You finally came open to him about who you really are. I'm glad. After we heard about what you did for that mother and her baby, my parents were so astounded by you. But… As I thought over it, it was for the best that my parents should know the truth as well."
While not sure about them learning this way, Katara was planning to tell them. But still…
"She… didn't seem too confused." Katara admitted, earning a grin from Tensei.
"Oh they were. Trust me. Dad was pretty concerned, not understanding why this was kept from him. And mom was…. Let's just say, animated."
"I don't know what that means." Katara said with a frown making Tensei laugh.
"Crazy. After talking with them for a few days about it, they began to really think about it, and about everything you've done. Especially after I told them about what you did for Tenya and saving his life."
Katara looked down to him as they endered the pool room, concern growing at that statement. "Did you… talk to the chief?"
He gave a slow nod as he came to the waters edge. "He did. Apparently you have one final trick that's very interesting." He turned and saw the worried look on his face. "I won't force you, but that is something I'd like to hear about soon. But first, help me down."
"What?" She looked at him confused before her eyes widened as he appeared to push himself out of his seat with his arms. "Wait, are you doing?!"
"Going for a swim," He grunted as he scooted to the edge of his chair, "Doctor's said I can do low strain movements in water with my arms, so I'm gonna hop in."
Katara reacted and quickly grabbed his arm helping to hold him up. "But, are you sure you can-
"Hey, I've been stuck in a bed or a chair for two weeks. My head is going crazy." He said with a laugh. "My arms can move so I'm using them."
While worried he was pushing himself, Katara trusted his judgment and helped him down, guiding him our of the chair until his bottom was on the ground. He grabbed his legs and shifted them until they hung over the water's edge, sighing in success when they were both over. "There we go." he grunted and pulled his shirt off.
As the clothes were removed, Katara's eyes stared down at the thick brace that was wrapped around his waist, her heart beating faster waiting for him to unstrap it. When he did, she couldn't help but gasp when the large wound was revealed on his back, the injury closed but still obviously raw underneath. Tensei heard it, looking back and frowning. "It's alright, Katara. It's not as bad as it looks."
She cast a small glare at him. "Really?"
He shook his head and chuckled. "Okay, it's bad. But it will heal soon."
Before he could slide into the water, Katara grabbed his shoulder. "Wait. If you would… I can try and do something at least." She reached behind her back and pulled her canteen out, uncapping it and bending out a small ball of water. "I can speed up the healing of that if you want."
Tensei was about to say he was fine, but the look on her face told him she needed to do this. Smiling, he gave a small nod and looked forward again, allowing her to bring her now glowing hands to his back. The water encircled the area, flowing into the wound and shimmering bright at her power went to work. After several minutes, she could sense the damaged tissue slowly healing, repairing itself and closing any minor openings deeper. "It's going to take quite a few treatments to actually heal this all the way." She said, realizing how deep the opening was.
"Well, I think I can squeeze in some appointments, doctor." He joked, "I'll set it in my schedule."
She laughed at his joke, moving her hands lower to the bottom of the injury. As she did, however, she once again sensed the void of feeling in his lower waist. Her heart ached knowing it was to be like this from now on, his legs useless and forcing him in a wheelchair. Glaring, she continued to heal his skin but also focused her energy internally, hoping for some miracle she could somehow do something. As the minutes ticked by, the skin on the surface continued to heal up, but the internal damage in his spine remained the same. She felt her stomach tighten, the thought she couldn't do anything causing her to grow more frustrated.
After another two minutes, she realized nothing was changing, her hands pulling back as she looked to the ground in defeat. "That should be good for now." She quietly said.
Tensei reached around and felt the spot on his back, his eyes widening in surprise when he could feel the difference in what it was before to what it was now. "Wow, that is pretty amazing. Thanks." He said, looking back but losing his smile to the look on her face. "What is it?"
She took a deep breath and looked away. "It's just… I feel horrible I can't do anything to help with the rest of you."
"Hey…" He said sternly, "Don't put any blame on you. This was my mistake. It's something that no one else can fix either, so don't get mad at yourself."
Hearing that did help ease Katara's pain, giving a small smile towards him. "Thanks. I am glad you are better, Iida."
"Please…" Tensei shook his head and smiled. "I think you are close enough to not have to be so formal."
At first she was confused, before she realized what he meant and feeling her heart quicken from the statement. She felt warm from his words, and smiled. "Okay… Tensei."
"There we go." Tensei nodded in approval before sliding into the water. He pumped his arms, keeping his body on the surface despite being unable to kick. Happy he could move, Tensei swam along the edge, keeping within grabbing distance of the wall just in case he exhausted himself. "Now this feels better."
Katara watched as he moved along the water, a mixture of emotions battling inside herself. While she did feel happy he was able to move, she still felt the pain knowing he was going to be like this. Even though he kept telling her it wasn't her fault, she still felt the guilt of not being able to help him. Then, her eyes widened as she suddenly remembered something from before, someone that had amazed her since the first day she had seen their power at work.
'Even though our powers are different… maybe I can learn how to increase the strength of my healing.' She whispered internally, thinking not just about Tensei, but anyone else that needed help.
The next morning arrived very quickly for Katara, the waterbender eager to get to school for several reasons. She was of course happy to get back and see everyone else, eager to hear how their weeks all went. She sighed out loud, wondering how many were going to bring up the hero killer incident to which they had to hide the truth, or the baby incident at which she already was getting a flood of messages from Yaoyorozu and Mina about it. But there was the fact of being someone she wanted to meet before class started, hoping to hear the answer she wanted.
She was so eager in fact she had asked Tenya is they could leave early so she would have time. As he came out of his room, he grinned at his friend seeing her ready to go by the entryway. "Well, this is certainly a surprise. Beating me to the door is quite the rarity."
"Well you are the one always saying I'm keeping you waiting. Figured it was time to change that." Katara answered, already walking to the door as he approached. "Come on, let's get going."
Tenya raised his eyebrow at her pace, following her out and closing the door behind himself. "You are eager to learn, aren't you?" He asked, causing her to slow down.
She gave a nod back to him. After telling him what she wanted to do last night, Katara was adamant about getting to the school. "If I can get stronger, I can help everyone a lot more. Your injuries won't be as bad and-
Tenya's hand gripped her shoulder, forcing her to stop walking. "Katara. You shouldn't put this all onto you. You have helped us so much, and you don't need to increase that burden."
She sighed gripped his hand to pull it off. "It's not just a burden. I want to do this not just for you and my friends, but for myself. The more I can do will always be helpful."
As they continued walking and got onto the train to school, Katara looked over at her friend, thinking back to the night with Stain. "So, how are your injuries feeling?" She asked him.
"They are doing better. My leg is getting better, but my shoulder is just a little stiff." he answered, stretching it at that moment.
Seeing that made Katara groan internally, knowing that if she was stronger she could heal that easier, only adding to her reasoning to get to school. "Well, all that I know is that it feels good to be back together after that week."
Smiling, Tenya adjusted himself in his seat as the train raced along the tracks. "I couldn't agree more."
After they reached their stop, the pair of teens made their way down the road and to their school, entering the main doorway and into the halls. Since it was early the school was still mostly empty, making it the perfect time for her to ask her request. "Alright, I'm going to go and ask now." She said to him.
Tenya gave her a nod. "Alright then. I wish you the best of luck."
Smiling, Katara adjusted her backpack and turned down the hall. "Thanks. I'll see you in class, Tenya."
As she walked down the hall, Tenya sat open mouthed for a moment to what she called him. While at first he was surprised, he simply grinned and walked towards class. "I'll see you soon, Katara."
A few minutes in her walk, Katara finally arrived at the room she was looking for, staring up at the nurses office. She took a breath and knocked on the door.
"Come in." the voice answered from inside. Given approval, Katara opened the door and walked inside. The elder Recovery Girl looked up in surprise to who it was. "Katara dear, I didn't expect to see you here."
"Hello ma'am. I just had to come and talk to you before class started." Katara responded and shut the door behind her. "I had actually had a question to ask you."
Recovery Girl chuckled and stood up from her seat. "If you are here about kids, I think you are covered."
Katara looked at her in confusion. "What?"
"I saw what you did for that woman and her baby the other day. You really are a special one." the elder woman smiled brightly. "I don't think I've ever heard of a student doing something like that."
Katara smiled and rubbed her arm. "Thank you, but I really wanted to ask you something important. You are amazing at healing with your quirk. And I was hoping you could help me."
Recovery girl looked at her curiously. "Hmm? Are you hurt?"
Katara shook her head. "No. it's just… would it be possible if you could train me in healing?"
The nurse was certainly surprised by that request, not expecting to hear that. "Train you? But your healing is already wonderful."
"But yours is amazing. I have never seen healing like that before, and I was hoping you could help me improve mine. If I could make mine stronger, then I can help those around me more."
The look on Katara's face told the nurse everything, taking a deep breath and walking forward. "I heard what happened to your caretaker. Unfortunately even I can't heal something like that. I'm sorry if I sound blunt, but I don't want you to get your hopes up with training and-
"No, I understand…" Katara looked down in pain, still hard for her to accept it. "I know I can't change that. It's just if I could make my healing stronger, I can help more people and keep others safe. I would truly appreciate if I had that chance to learn more. Please."
Sighing, Recovery Girl turned and walked back towards her desk. It had been years since she did any teaching on healing, and never to a UA student. While hesitant, the elder woman couldn't help but smile at the idea of getting back into the tutoring mindset. "So you want to learn how to heal more?" She asked.
"Yes, I do." Katara quickly answered.
"Well I am busy tonight, but come by after class tomorrow." The nurse turned back and grinned up to the teen. "We will test you to see what you are capable of."
Notes: Oh... Now Katara has a mentor! let's see where this takes her! got some other character moments and that will start changing the course of many. Now i wasn't planning on ending it here, but now next chapter and on can focus on the students reactions and other events going forward now.
Cool note, lets thank Matheus Bezerra de Lima for taking his time and going through previous chapters and editing mistakes. Soon I will be uploading the revisions they have made. really appreciate the time you put into that.
