I couldn't tell you how much time had elapsed since Elijah had left to speak with the others. I kept myself busy with cleaning up the mess that occurred from earlier in one of the main rooms downstairs. As I was on all-fours on the ground lifting up empty blood bags, the sound of clicking heels entered the room. I sighed and sat back on my heels.
"You know they won't tell Elijah anything, right?" I said as Rebekah stood in the doorway.
"Don't worry. Elijah can be quite persuasive when he needs to be." She replied. Rebekah tried to be confident in her words, but the slight hitch in her tone led me to believe that even she was worried. As I stared blankly at the blood-splattered wall in front, Rebekah cleared her throat. "Fancy a drink?"
"Absolutely." I got to my feet and followed her down the hall and into the kitchen. As she reached for a bottle of wine from the rack, I grabbed two glasses from the cupboard and placed them on the island before sitting in one of the stools.
Tension filled the room as she poured the red liquid into the glasses and leaned over the island, her glass in one hand as she pushed mine towards me. I smiled as I clasped the glass with both hands, sipping it slowly. The fruity liquid burned and soothed my throat in unison as I drank.
"I'm glad you made it out of the school." I smiled at her and placed the glass on the marble counter.
"You are?" Rebekah asked surprised as she looked back at me.
I frowned, "No, actually. I wanted him to kill you there and then." I joked playfully as she smiled. "Of course I'm glad you got out in time. I know we don't really know each other all too well...but you've been nothing but kind to me. Well, most of the time that is."
"Well, for what it's worth...I'm glad you also made it out of there alive." Rebekah sighed and took another swig from her glass.
"Besides, our needs seem to line up with each other more so than not." I clinked my glass with hers.
"That is also very true."
Maybe an hour or so had passed since Rebekah and I shared a drink in the kitchen before we heard back from Elijah with the location of Klaus' body. He gave us a location of where to meet up with Damon and retrieve him back. Once I had my coat on, Rebekah and I made our way out to my car before setting off together.
Apparently, Elijah had struck a deal with Elena and the others for the safe retrieval of his brother's body. One that I wasn't too happy about. "It was your brother that struck that deal, Rebekah. Your family. I have no intention to obey the deal once we have Klaus back."
Rebekah released a small chuckle, "Relax, sweetheart." I turned to face her as she smiled, "You seem to forget, that when it comes to my brother, he has a way with words." I narrowed my eyes as I pulled onto the highway, trying my best to focus on the road ahead.
"What does that even mean?" I shook my head.
"Well, he said that he would never revive him. He never said anything else about the rest of us." Rebekah clarified. Then it all fell into place inside my head.
"So, when we have him back in our possession, we bring him back?" I asked, looking for more clarification on the matter.
"Yes." It was her simple but strong reply that made me breakout into a wide grin.
"That was an amazing move." I said as my phone began to ring for the third time since we set off.
I leaned over and pressed the red button to silence the device once more before it began to ring seconds later.
"Just answer the bleeding thing!" Rebekah groaned and handed me over the phone in frustration.
"It's my mom," I said as I frowned and answered the phone. "Mom, now isn't a good time."
"Why? What's happening? Are you okay?!" My mom's hurried and panicked words spilled out all at once.
"I'm fine, mom. What's going on?" I asked worriedly, as I glanced over to Rebekah. Well aware that she was listening into the conversation.
"Where are you right now?" Her tone was laced with fear as I heard her breathing heavily into the speaker on the other end of the line.
"I'm with Rebekah, why?" I replied.
"You have to listen to me very carefully, do you understand me?"
"Mom, you're scaring me."
"It's the council...They know everything." My heart sank and my mouth dropped open as she continued to fill me in on what was going on back in Mystic Falls. "Alaric gathered everyone and told them everything. They're going after the Mikaelson's and then the rest of you. Caroline and Tyler are getting ready to leave, you have to come home, right now."
"I...I can't," I replied in an absent-minded state. I couldn't believe what she was saying, it was ridiculous.
Right?
"Why not!?" She yelled into the phone.
"I'm not in Mystic Falls, mom." I winced and prepared for what was to come hurling my way next.
"Jessica Monroe Forbes!" My mother screeched in my ear. I winced at hearing her using my full name. She hadn't called me by it in so many years that it almost felt foreign to hear it aloud. "I don't care where you are. You'll come back right this instant before the council tracks you and Rebekah down, and slaughters you both!"
I pulled the phone away from my ear and held it under my nose as I took a deep breath in. Glancing in Rebekah's direction, I noticed that even she was slightly worried by the new information.
Two choices. A - Keep going and retrieve Klaus' body with the possibility that the council is hot-on-our-tail. Or B, turn the car around and head into the lions den where they might already be waiting for us at the house with stakes.
There was only one choice when it came down to it.
"Mom...I'll be back as soon as I can. Please let Caroline and Tyler know that I'll be back, too. I love you." I hung up the phone quickly before she began to yell some more.
"Well," I sighed and gripped the steering wheel tighter, "This just got a whole lot worse."
"Nik wanted to leave." Rebekah spoke up and I turned to face her.
"I know."
"So, once we have him we should leave Mystic Falls."
"What about my family?" I asked, worriedly.
"Your mom just said that Caroline and Tyler were leaving." Rebekah referred back to the phone call. "If she's right, and the council is coming after my family, you'd be best to stay away from us."
My brow furrowed, "What are you saying?"
"I'm saying that you should go back to Mystic Falls, to your family." Rebekah sighed and stared ahead, "I'll go and get my brother back, alone."
I shook my head defiantly, "I'm not leaving you." The blonde turned to face me, a small smile on her face as she nodded in agreement. "I'll do what it takes to get Klaus back."
"Even if that means risking your own life."
I shrugged, "I've lived a lie my whole life anyway." I smiled as a small snigger came from her as she stared ahead once more. "Besides, I'll have your back if you have mine."
"We'll have each other's backs." Rebekah agreed. "Besides, Nik would kill me faster than any council member if anything were to happen to your pretty little head."
I felt the heat radiating on my face at her words.
I put my foot down on the accelerator, driving well over any speed-limit that was in place as we went flying down the highway in a blur. The rest of the drive was in silence. I was too busy thinking of all the things that could go wrong, and i'm certain that Rebekah was thinking the same thing.
A while later, Rebekah and I pulled up into the parking lot of a huge storage unit in the dead of night. There were about four or five other cars parked sparsely across the lot, which didn't seem unusual to me. Once parked and composed, we headed around the side of the storage unit building and came across a slightly ajar door that was left open and walked inside cautiously. I had to blink a few times as my eyes adjusted from the black of night to the bright, florescent beams that were a-lit above our heads.
Clicking the button to summon the elevator, Rebekah and I entered and she pressed the middle floor button as per Elijah's instructions for the larger storage unit level. A loud ping echoed from the elevator as the doors opened and I walked out into the empty corridor.
"Damon!" I yelled down the vacant corridor. "Damon, where are you!?"
As Rebekah and I quickly walked through the corridors, searching for the container that held her brother. A whoosh of air encapsulated me and pulled me backwards. My hands instantly shot out and grabbed the back of Rebekah's jacket, pulling her along also.
Rebekah gasped before her mouth was covered along with my own as the person stood back and ushered for us to be silent.
"Shhh..." Damon motioned with a finger on his lips.
We all shared a look of concern before Damon tilted his head to the right and we both followed behind, silently. Damon led us to the container containing Klaus' body within a large coffin. I ran my hand over the top as we entered into the space one after the other and took up positions beside the coffin before we made quick, quiet work of wheeling the coffin down the corridor towards the black SUV.
The ending point was in sight, we were almost out and in the clear...almost.
Alaric suddenly appeared in front of the coffin out of nowhere. He grabbed Rebekah by the hair and slammed her head against the side of the car with a loud thud, before tossing her body to the ground. He then turned to face Damon, anticipating that he would attack next, and he was right. Damon rushed over to him with great speed, but Alaric was much stronger than he. As he kicked Damon in the stomach, he sent his body across the room.
Alaric turned on the spot and lifted the lid to the coffin, exposing Klaus' vulnerable body from within. Retrieving the White Oak from the inside pocket of his coat. He raised it above his body as Klaus' eyes shot open.
"NO!" I screamed and ran over to him.
I clung to Alaric's body as tightly as I could before driving my teeth into his shoulder, causing him to groan aloud in pain for the smallest of moments before he effortlessly grasped my arm and threw me across the room. I stopped rolling as I collided with Damon as he got to his feet before he helped me up.
I wiped away the blood from the corners of my lips as Alaric laughed menacingly a few feet away. Rebekah, Damon and I began yelling and pleading in unison as Alaric raised his arms in the air before he slammed the stake down into the chest of the hybrid.
"NO!" Rebekah screamed as a loud gasp came from Klaus' body.
"NO! NO!" I bellowed as I fell to my knees on the concrete floor.
Klaus' body combusted into amber flames that burned bright behind Alaric before he closed the lid, containing the flames within.
Damon pulled me to my feet with his free hand as he was holding Rebekah back with the other. Stopping her from running to the coffin. Her cries echoed within the room as I fell into a silent, empty sob. I ran the sleeve of my shirt over my eyes, wiping away the tears as Alaric turned to face us.
"Next." He sneered and pointed towards the remaining Original.
"Rebekah, run! Run!" Damon yelled and pushed Rebekah in the opposite direction of the hunter. In the blink of an eye, Rebekah grasped my wrist as we vamp-sped out of the container unit and into the parking lot. I matched her speed once my feet caught up and we rushed to my car, quickly climbing inside and locking the doors before hightailing it out of the parking lot.
Once we were on the highway, I took my foot off the gas slightly as no one was following on behind and just stared out of the window. My body was trembling as I gripped the steering wheel tightly, digging my nails into the leather material.
He was gone again. Truly gone this time. Just when I thought I had him back, he was ripped from my grasp once more.
It hurt a lot more the second time around. It's not often you feel the pain of a loss more than once for the same person. I don't quite know how to explain it...It's just emptiness. Knowing that you'll never feel their touch, hear their voice, share their space ever again. It was like my own heart had been ripped from my chest and torn in two.
I sniffled and wiped under my nose before blinking to clear the tears from my eyes as I pulled off the highway and stopped near the woodland, per Rebekah's request. As I stopped and turned off the ignition, I felt a hand wrap over mine on the steering wheel, causing me to look at Rebekah.
Her face was stained with tears that were still flowing. I placed my other hand over hers and nodded my head before we climbed out of the car and made our way through the woods. I tugged my jacket tighter around my stomach as the branches crunched under the weight of my feet before we came to a halt.
In front of us stood Elijah. His eyes were also red with brimming tears as he looked back at us. Lost.
"He's gone, Elijah." Rebekah said quietly, "There was nothing we could do to stop it." She choked back a sob as her brother walked towards her and embraced her tightly. As he released her, he looked at me concerned before he opened his arms and I walked into his body. My head rested on his chest as his hands held my back, tightly. After a moment had passed, he released me and took a step backwards.
"What is it?" I asked as I wiped away the tears.
I could tell, no, I could feel that there was something going on.
Elijah looked at the ground before he met my gaze.
"Tyler Lockwood is dead, but the rest survived."
My eyes widened in shock.
"What? No!" Once again, another wave of pain cascaded over my body as I looked towards the sky and balled my fists, covering my eyes as I walked back-and-fourth.
All this time, I had forgotten about the sire-lines. So much so, that I didn't even give it another thought the whole time we were driving back to Mystic Falls. I was wrapped up into saving Klaus that I had forgotten about the consequences for the others. My sister...my brother. Tyler was gone.
"You said that Niklaus turned their bloodline." Elijah quizzed his sister.
"I thought he did." She replied in shock.
"It wasn't me, it wasn't Kol." Elijah spoke as he thought aloud.
"It wasn't me, Elijah. It was Niklaus, I'm sure of it." Rebekah said firmly.
"Then how are they still alive?" Elijah pressed on, annoyance laced in his tone.
I stopped pacing and slapped my hands against my thighs. Both Originals turned to face me as I smirked. "Maybe he was lying," I shrugged, "I mean, he's lied before...maybe this is just one big lie!"
Empty...I felt empty.
Both of them watched me as I rambled away to myself and began to pace back and forth.
"We must leave." Elijah spoke in a clearer tone and I stopped pacing. "Alaric will come for us."
"And the council." I said as I crossed my arms over my chest and faced the pair. "They know everything. Alaric outed us all." Elijah fiddled with the cuff-links on his sleeve. Perplexed as to what to do with the new information, he tried to convince Rebekah and I to leave right away with him. We both refused.
One phone call later and a quick chat with his sister, he was gone. Left behind, Rebekah and I stood in the clearing facing one another before we made our way back to my car. Once we were inside, I drove off in the direction of Mystic Falls.
"You don't have to come with me, you know." Rebekah broke the silence. "I can do this on my own. You need not have any part of it."
I silently thought to myself before replying, "Alaric has to be stopped."
"You're driven by rage right now, Jessica." Rebekah said.
I turned to face her, "And you're not?" I scoffed and put my foot down, causing us to drive faster. "I don't want Elena to die, I don't. I grew up with her, she's one of my best friends but he has to be stopped, once and for all and there's only one way to do that." My knuckles turned white as I gripped the steering wheel tighter. "They took him from me, Rebekah. They took him from me, twice." A single tear rolled down my cheek as I thought back to the mansion. "They held me down as I watched the life drain from his body. And just when I thought we were getting him back, he was torn from me once more."
"I know." Rebekah replied quietly.
I fell silent briefly before turning to face Rebekah, "Does that make me a monster?"
"Of course not. This is an impossible situation." She replied. "One of them would die regardless."
"You know this is all your mothers fault, right?" I said as we approached Mystic Falls.
"I do."
"And Damon, Stefan...Tyler." I carried on listing the names of the ones who hurt me. "I've lost Tyler as well."
"Trust me," Rebekah sighed as we crossed over Wickery Bridge, "They will all feel the pain we feel very soon."
"Good." I murmured as I pulled off the road at the other side of the bridge.
She was right. I was blinded by rage, and I couldn't see or think clearly. I knew what I was doing was wrong, and would hurt a lot of people but at the same time...did they think of me? Did they think of what it would do to me when they killed Klaus in front of my very eyes? Tyler was now dead, and even thought he was one of the people to hurt me. At the end of the day, he was my brother. I would have made him pay in some way or another, but I'd never wish him to be dead.
I snapped out of my trance at the sound of my car door being closed. I looked in the wing mirror to see Rebekah walking down the street towards the bridge before I climbed out of the car to follow her. As we walked onto the bridge, Rebekah pulled out her phone and keyed in a number before putting it onto the speaker phone.
"Hello?" I narrowed my eyes as Stefan answered.
"You're alive. Congratulations." Rebekah sarcastically greeted him in a dry tone.
"Rebekah," Stefan replied. He was taken aback as to why she was calling.
"Elijah spoke to Elena. Her and Matt should be arriving back in town any minute."
"Yeah, he told me that." Stefan sighed, "He also said you two would be long gone out of town by now."
Rebekah's head tilted, "That's the problem. Elijah says we have to run, that the hunter will keep coming after us, but I don't want to run anymore, Stefan. I spent my whole life running."
"What are you talking about?" Stefan's voice began to strain, "We had a deal"
A smirk grew on Rebekah's lips, "I'm sorry, but Klaus is dead. There is no deal. If my brothers and I are going to survive, we need to get rid of Alaric and the only way to get rid of Alaric..." Rebekah and I came to a halt as we approached the middle of the bridge.
"Rebekah, no..." Stefan's voice trailed off as Rebekah ended the call.
As illuminating headlights began to appear through the trees, Rebekah took one final look at me before she held my hand.
"Are you sure you want to be here." She asked.
I dipped my head. My body was filled with rage, "I'm sure."
As the truck neared, I could make out the passengers within the vehicle to be Matt and Elena. As much as I didn't want anything to happen to Matt. I just had to hope that he'd make it out of the water alive. The loud screeching of the tires against the concrete penetrated my ears as Matt turned the wheel sharply to avoid hitting us. I gripped Rebekah's hand tight and held my breath as the truck reared off to the side before crashing through the barrier and hitting the water below with great force.
I rushed over to the barrier and gripped the side tightly as I watched the rear end of the truck bob in the water before slowly beginning to sink. The realisation of what was happening began to settle in and the guilt washed over me as I began to shake. The Adrenalin was pumping through my veins and I began to breath heavily.
I felt hands grasping my shoulders as the end of the truck sunk below the surface. I turned around to face Rebekah as she tugged me in the direction of the car.
"I...I," I muttered aloud as I walked with her. "I can't,"
"You can and we did." Rebekah spoke firmly. "Now, we have to leave."
I nodded my head, knowing there was no going back as we whooshed towards the car before driving in the direction of the mansion in complete silence.
Once we had arrived back, I made my way inside the mansion to be met by the housekeeper, Daniel.
"Ahh, there you are." He spoke cheerfully as I entered the hallway. Rebekah followed in closely behind before closing the main doors behind her.
"Not now, Daniel." I waved him off.
"Some people were here looking for you."
I frowned, and turned to face him. "Who?"
"Well, your sister came by, followed shortly by someone who said they were from the council."
"Wait," I cut him off sharply, "Did they follow my sister?"
He shook his head, "No, they arrived a few hours apart, Miss Forbes."
I nodded and blew a sigh of relief before I faced Rebekah, who also looked worried.
"I shall go and call the council, let them know you've arrived back." Daniel smiled before turning on his heels.
"What? No." I said loudly as he turned around. "Don't do that."
"But I must," He grinned, "They were quite insistent that I call them when I see you or Miss Mikaelson."
What the hell was wrong with him?
"Just go home, or wherever it is that you disappear to at the end of the day."
"I must call first." He pressed once more.
Red. All I saw was red. And after everything that happened today, I snapped.
I released a low growled before, I pounced on him like a lion stalking its prey, and within seconds I had him on the floor as he screamed in pain while I sunk my teeth into his neck. I gave his neck a quick jolt to the left, snapping it instantly.
I lulled my head back as I leaned back on my heels and closed my eyes. My head facing the ceiling as I breathed deeply. I didn't know how much I needed to release my anger until I had it. Once I gathered myself and got to my feet, I looked down at his body and the blood puddle on the floor and smiled slightly before facing Rebekah.
"I kinda liked him." I said void of any emotion as a small chuckle escaped my bloodstained lips.
"I can see that." Rebekah replied back as she smiled weakly. She approached me as I felt the tears begging to brim my eyelids once more and placed her hands on my shoulders before tugging me forwards into her chest. She held me tightly as I quietly wept into the crook of her neck.
Once the tears had subsided briefly, Rebekah told me to head upstairs and get cleaned up. I referenced the body in the middle of the floor and she told me that she would get someone to take care of it. So I followed her instructions and headed up the staircase and disappeared round the corner, out of sight. I listened in as I heard the heels of her shoes clicking against the wooden floorboards towards the kitchen as she lightly sobbed to herself.
I walked down the corridor and stopped outside of my door, my hand hovering over the handle as I looked down the corridor at Klaus' door. Letting my hand fall back to my side, I walked further down the hallway until I stood outside of his room, my breath caught in my throat as my hand rested on the handle.
Moments had passed before I pushed the handle down and the door swung open. I took a few steps inside and closed the door quietly behind before resting my back against the wood. I cast my eyes over the suitcases that lay on the bed and the floor surrounding the bed.
He really was leaving today.
I pushed my back off the door and walked further into the room. Peeling my jacket off, I let it fall to the floor as I approached one of the unzipped cases and trailed my fingers along the top before opening it. Inside were some of his shirts, folded neatly one-on-top-of-the-other. A lump formed in my throat as I traced my hand over the top one before pulling it out and holding it close to my chest.
I climbed up onto the bed and crawled to the top before curling up into a tight ball, clenching the burgundy shirt in my fists. As I hugged the shirt, a new flow of tears cascaded down my face and onto the shirt, dampening it instantly. My memories flashed through my mind, reminding me of the events that had taken place today for one last, painful time. Reminding me that I had not only lost Klaus, but many others. Tyler was gone, and we didn't even know how or why, as the rest of us were still alive. Not to mention that I caused the death of two of my best friends not even an hour ago. I watched them die in the most horrific way possible. Then I remembered. Elena's parents...
"Oh no..." I squeaked out as I began to roar into Klaus' pillows. The pain was almost too much to bear as I pressed my face firmly into the soft material, trying hard to conceal the loud cries that were coming out. I continued crying until I finally fell asleep unknowingly.
