It was the day of the Winter Wonderland, and to say I wasn't looking forward to it would be an understatement. Even though I was fully healed from the previous nights event, my bones were still aching for some reason. The bath this morning helped slightly, but I've had Caroline nipping my ear off since I woke. The whole Elena and Damon situation seemed to be at the forefront of everyone's minds lately. Mine included. Caroline wouldn't shut up about it.
I told Care that I would meet her at Town Square in a little while. First I had to go back to Klaus' and get my bag and Jacket from my room. When I arrived at the Mansion, I walked up the driveway towards the door as there were no guards, nor were there any house keepers lurking around the halls as I entered.
As I walked down the hallway towards Klaus' private room, I stopped outside of the door as I heard rustling coming from inside. My hearing intuitively listened to the conversation that was coming from the room.
"Nobody's killing Tyler." My eyes widened as I heard Stefan speaking from within the room. I could make out the other voice on the other end of the call as he continued to talk.
"Hello? Stefan?" Damon said clearly on the other end of the call.
"Look, I know it's a touchy subject, but do you know where Elena is today?"
"I think she's running around...trying to figure out how to deprogram Jeremy." Damon replied.
"How'd she take it last night? You telling her to stay away from you?"
"Not well."
"You okay?" Stefan asked his brother. The sympathy in his voice was evident.
"Peachy," Damon replied before they both fell silent, "Gotta go. Bonnie has enlisted Dr. Evil in her plan and I have to thwart him."
As soon as the line went dead, I walked into the room.
Stefan's head shot up in my direction as I stood a few feet away from him, my arms crossed across my chest.
"You better tell me what's going on, right now." I growled.
"Jess..." Stefan sighed.
"No small talk, Stefan." I held my hand in the air to silence him, "Tell me why you're here. Then tell me why you're talking about killing my brother."
"It's not what you think." Stefan replied as he made his way across the room to me.
"You're looking for something in Klaus' house, Stefan. Tell me what you're doing here?"
He took a sharp inhale, like he was defeated.
"I'm looking for a sword," He sighed, "Have you seen it. Or know where he might have moved it to?"
I frowned and shook my head, "I haven't seen a sword, Stefan."
"He must have hidden it somewhere else. Somewhere safe." Stefan groaned and looked around the room.
"Why are you looking for a sword?" I queried. When he remained silent, I reached into my back pocket and pulled out my cell. "If you don't tell me what's going on, I'll call Klaus and ask him myself."
"No, no. Don't." Stefan said quickly.
"Tell me." I said lowly.
The internal struggle whether or not to tell me was almost eating him alive. His cheeks puffed before he finally told me everything. I must have zoned out half way through. It was insane. I only thought Tyler wanted to free the hybrids from the sire-bond, I didn't know he wanted an army of his own to kill Klaus. I should have seen this coming. His dedication to them was almost as bad as Klaus' was in the beginning.
Stefan filled me in on everything. From Tyler and the hybrids, to Klaus and the sword and that that entailed. I felt betrayed by both parties. Each of them were lying to me. Straight to my face and I was as naive as ever. Stefan drove us to The Grill where Caroline would meet us. She wasn't happy that Stefan told me everything, but I wasn't about to stand by and let this happen. Not again.
Once we had arrived at The Grill, Stefan and I made our way down to the alley beside one of the exits to The Grill and waited for Care to arrive. Stefan leaned against the wall while I paced back and forth, growing more impatient by the second.
"Hey." Caroline said as she walked up behind us.
"Hey!" I yelled. "What the hell are you thinking, Care?!" I rushed over to her, stopping just shy of her face. "How could you even think about doing this again to Klaus. To me?"
"You told her!?" She yelled over my head towards Stefan.
"I didn't have a choice, Caroline." He snapped back as we all began to argue with one another.
I clapped my hands together, breaking the bickering instantly.
"Look, did you find the sword?" Caroline asked Stefan.
"Nope."
"What are we gonna do now?" Care sulked and crossed her arms.
"Maybe I can find it," I said, "He might tell me where it is, or show me at least."
"Klaus is the only shot we have at finding the cure," Stefan sighed, "We need him. Tyler has to call it off."
"I agree." I smiled towards Stefan. "I'll only help if nothing happens to Klaus in the process."
"Well, that's not gonna happen."
Stefan and I turned around to see Tyler who appeared on the staircase. He looked towards Caroline and scowled.
"You told them?" He hissed and walked down the remaining steps towards us. "I've had twelve hybrids sworn to secrecy for a month. I have Hayley and a witch risking their lives and you're blabbing my plan to them?"
Stefan took a step forward and closed the gap between him and Tyler.
"Look, all I'm asking you for is a little bit of time, okay?" Stefan pleaded with him.
"How long? An hour? A day?" Tyler moaned, "Because every minute that goes by that we don't do this, they're at risk. You and Klaus already served one of them up for Jeremy to kill."
I shook my head, "No! You're calling it off altogether, Tyler!"
He looked over his shoulder towards Care who hung her head lowly.
"I don't owe you anything." He snapped.
"I'm your sister, Tyler!" I yelled in front of his face, but he was as cold as ever.
He sniggered lightly before he turned around to walk away.
"I'm taking him out."
My hair blew in front of my face as Stefan whooshed after him and blocked his path.
"I'm sorry, but I can't let you do that." Stefan warned.
My eyes widened as I looked behind Stefan. "Stefan..." I said lowly as hybrids descended the stairs behind him.
"I'm sorry but I can't." He repeated without taking his eyes off Tyler.
"Stefan!" Care yelled to gain his attention.
He looked towards me as I looked over his shoulder, wide-eyed and speechless. Stefan turned around to see the hybrid standing on the stairway behind us, all staring right at us. I turned around on the spot to see that the remaining hybrids were standing at the other side behind Caroline, blocking any means of escape.
"Sorry man, but you don't have a choice." Tyler said.
As he began to walk up the stairs, the hybrids moved in and grabbed each of us.
"Tyler!" I yelled after him, but he ignored me completely.
We were carted off to the Lockwood cellar. I shivered when I was dragged inside as this is where I had my first transition, but I couldn't let that cloud my mind right now. I had to remain focused.
Caroline, Stefan and I were shoved inside as the hybrids circled us. Tyler grabbed heavy chains from the top of a box.
"Keep them down here until we're ready to bring Klaus in," He dropped the chains at Kim's feet, "Use these if you have to."
I looked at Kim as she smirked at me while Stefan approached Tyler.
"Come on, Tyler, this is bigger than you. It's about more than revenge for us." Stefan said.
Tyler took a dominating step forward, "I know what it's about for you, Stefan. It's about the cure. You know what happens to a hybrid when he's cured of being a vampire? We go back to being werewolves; turning on every full moon. We could give a rat's ass about the cure."
"Like me, you mean?" I said from behind Stefan. "I'm just a werewolf after all, Tyler. I'm not special like one of your little bitches, right? So why would my feelings matter in this equation?"
Tyler looked towards me, but his body language never changed. He remained tall, with a face of stone.
"Tyler. come on." Care pleaded.
He smirked, "I needed you on my side, Care. That's all I wanted." Tyler said lowly.
As he turned around to walk up the stairs, I called his name and he froze on the spot.
"Please don't do this," I pleaded with wide, tear-stricken eyes. "Don't take him from me again. You saw what happened last time. I'm not about to relive that, Tyler. I won't."
"I'm sorry, Jess. It has to be done." He said calmly before making his way to the bottom of the staircase.
"If you do this...we're done." I hissed through clenched teeth, "I'll never forgive you!"
The tears began to nip at the corners of my eyes as I wiped them away with the back of my sleeve.
He left not long after we had been taken into the cellar, but some of Ty's hybrids remained to make sure we stayed put.
"Jess," A soft hand was placed on my shoulder as I stared at the staircase where Tyler once stood. I was seething.
"Don't." I shrugged the hand off.
"Please, we didn't have any other choice." Caroline sighed.
I sniggered, "What, Caroline? I know your reasons behind it, I do. I want the cure for all of you as well...Just not at the expense of anyone's lives." I said in a shaky voice. "Yet, here I am. Once again, I am at the bottom of everyone's list."
"That's not true!" Care groaned in disbelief.
"Isn't it?!" I frowned and smirked at the same time, "You've done this before. All of you have!" I looked towards Stefan as he pressed his lips into a tight line. "None of you even cared to think about how this would affect me." Before Care could even reply, I raised my hand in the air to silence her and walked across the room, creating distance between us all.
The atmosphere inside the cellar was palpable. I would give anything to be anywhere else right now, but with the hybrids standing guard, that wasn't even a choice. I wanted to call Klaus, warn him about what was about to happen but I knew the hybrids would be on me the second I reached inside of my pocket.
"Ugh, this is ridiculous!" Caroline groaned, "We are not hostages!"
"Sure you are, sweetie." Kim taunted in a patronising tone.
Care glared at her before whooshing in front of her face. They stared each other down, but the tension broke as Stefan's phone began to ring from within his pocket. The other hybrids made a move on him, but he raised his hands in the air.
"Relax," They all stopped their advance, "It's my brother." Stefan answered the phone and turned his back to the rest of us as he spoke.
I couldn't hear the conversation due to the other noises coming from the other hybrids in the room. Everything seemed to echo down here, I could barely hear myself think. About ten seconds later, Stefan hung up the call and faced us.
"We don't need the sword."
My stomach instantly dropped at his words.
"No..." I gasped. "I won't let you!"
"Jess, I'm truly sorry." Stefan sighed. I could feel that his words were genuine, but that was no comfort to me now.
"You don't have a choice!" Before I could move a step forward, Kim whooshed behind me and placed me into a choke hold. I thrashed out against her hold, scratching at her skin as her grip around my neck tightened. Stefan and Caroline made a move towards me but were held back by the other hybrids. Moments later my world became black.
I woke god-knows how long later in the Salvatore parlour room. I was placed on the sofa, a blanket slung over me as I began to stir. I rubbed my neck with my left hand and slung my legs off of the sofa and placed them on the carpet below. I groaned lightly as a voice cleared their throat and caught my attention.
"Here," Stefan said as he handed me a glass of bourbon and took a seat on the coffee table in front of me. "It'll help."
"What happened?" I groaned once more as I took the glass from his hand. I took a sip and my face instantly shrivelled up at the taste. Stefan smirked lightly as I handed him the glass back. "Tell me he's still here?"
"I-I don't know." He sighed.
My eyes welled up once more as I looked into his eyes.
"Where's Caroline and Tyler?" I asked.
"Caroline was here earlier, but she left a little while ago." He replied softly. "I don't know about Tyler."
"I have to go," I said sharply and stood straight off the sofa. "I need to find him...if he's still alive."
"Jess, I-" Stefan began to say something but I cut him off.
"Don't, Stefan." I looked at him as I rounded the coffee table. "Just-Just leave me alone."
I left the Salvatore Manor quickly and headed straight to the town square.
I ran the whole way there in record time, but the lack of bodies sent a shiver down my spine. I knew the event was over a few hours ago, but I didn't expect to see it abandoned completely. The air was crisp. I could see the smoke from my breath coming out in bursts of white clouds as I looked around. There was no one there. No one. Then I manage to pick up on the sound of voices in the distance. My heart rate spiked once more as I jogged in the direction of said voices. As I approached the centre of the square where the snow machines were sat, I spotted two figures in the distance by the large water fountain. One was standing, the other sitting on the edge. A smile broke out on my face as I breathed a sigh of relief. It was Klaus. Alive and in his own body. It didn't explain why he never answered the hundreds of voicemails I left him, but I didn't care. All I care about was that he was alive and stood a few hundred yards away from me. I took another look and made out who the person sitting on the edge of the fountain was. It was Mayor Lockwood.
I readied myself to run towards them, but as I took off and opened my mouth to call out his name, he grabbed the back of Mayor Lockwoods neck and forced her under the water. I froze on the spot, clamping a hand over my mouth which hung open in horror as I watched the scene play out in front of me. As much as I tried to look away, I couldn't. It was over in seconds. I gasped as I watched Carol Lockwood's body hanging limply in the fountain. Her upped half bobbed in the rippling water before it fell still.
Klaus slowly turned around and froze on the spot as he made eye contact with me.
"Jessica..." He whispered, and carefully approached me.
"Y-you...you killed Carol Lockwood," I stammered and backed away from him. "I watched you do it with my own eyes. S-she was innocent."
"If you want to play the blame game, you can blame your brother, Tyler." Klaus hissed. "He got all the hybrids to turn on me. To break their sire-bond. He led me into a death trap!" He growled softly. "Each and every one of them paid with their lives. Carol was all that Tyler had, other than you. Being alone will serve as punishment."
I couldn't believe what I was hearing, never mind what I just witnessed.
I backed further away as he made a move to come closer. "Don't!" I yelled and held my arm out to keep him from coming closer. "Everyone was right." I murmured. "I-I should have listened to them. I should have trusted them." My eyes swelled with tears as they began to run down my puffed cheeks. "You're nothing but a blood thirsty killer!"
Klaus took a step backwards, the full force of my words slapping him across the face. "You don't mean that, love." He gasped in disbelief.
I nodded my head confidently, "Yeah, I do." I replied and wiped at the fallen tears. "You've hurt so many of my friends...and I stood by your side, always defending you!" I took another step backwards, "Not this time..."
"Jessica..." Klaus stepped forwards and reached for my arm.
I jumped back. "No!" I yelled, "Don't come near me! Stay the h-hell away from me, Klaus."
I turned on my heels and bolted down down the street. I took one look back and saw Klaus standing exactly where I left him. Dazed and bloodied.
I returned to my own house and locked myself in my bedroom straight away. Mom wasn't home, and neither was Caroline, but I wanted to be completely alone. The locked door was for my own piece of mind. My breathing was erratic, I couldn't get a full breath in through the sobs that came spilling from my mouth.
"S-she's dead..." I whispered to myself.
If I didn't see it with my own two eyes, I wouldn't have believed it if anyone else told me. Klaus' body standing over Carol's as she lay in the water was all I could see. The stillness of the water as she lay there will forever be imprinted in my mind. Klaus' blooded clothes from killing his hybrids will also be there for the rest of my days.
There was one question that wouldn't leave me.
What do I do?
