Chapter 12: A Sis for Scootaloo
It was a normal morning, and Scootaloo was on her scooter, riding to school. She loved riding her scooter, the rush of going fast, and the wind in her face. She was just about there, when she came to an obstacle.
A trash can had fallen over, and she was heading right for it. There was no time to hit the brakes, so she thought quickly. She popped a wheelie, and jumped over the can.
"Woo-hoo!" she cheered as she did so.
And then she landed on the ground. Several students in the parking lot applauded her. She felt very proud, especially when Rainbow Dash ran by, and said,
"That was a nice move, kid."
"Rainbow Dash just said that was a nice move." Scootaloo replied.
Scootaloo admired Rainbow Dash because she was older, great at soccer, and was really cool.
In her homeroom class with Apple Bloom and Sweetie Belle she told them about it.
"And when I landed, everyone cheered and Rainbow Dash said, "That was a nice move, kid"."
"That's cool, Scootaloo." said Apple Bloom.
"Yeah, she practically said she'd like to take me under her wing and be like my older sister."
"Uh it was a nice compliment, Scoots, but I don't think she meant all that." Sweetie Belle replied.
Scootaloo's mood dropped.
"You guys are lucky to have older sisters. I wish Rainbow Dash was mine."
"Well maybe she can be like your older sister." Apple Bloom suggested.
That made Scootaloo think, but before she could think anymore the teacher came in.
In the hallway, she continued to think about it.
"Maybe if Rainbow Dash sees that I'm just as cool as she is, she'll take me under her wing." she thought.
But how was she going to do that? So she went to talk to her friends. They discussed it at lunch.
"You know, Applejack and I have this thing we do together." Apple Bloom mentioned.
"What?"
"Every couple months, Applejack and I spend a weekend camping in the Everfree Forest. I can see if she'll invite Rainbow Dash, and I invite you."
"That's a great idea." Scootaloo replied.
"Hey, can I come too? I can get Rarity to come." Sweetie Belle said.
The two looked unsure. They knew Rarity didn't really like the outdoors that much.
"Camping? Oh, I don't know, Sweetie Belle." said Rarity.
"Apple Bloom is going with her big sister. But I can understand if you don't want to bon with me." Sweetie Belle replied.
She then gave Rarity her best puppy dog eyes. Rarity couldn't say no to them.
"Oh, okay, I'll go." Sweetie Belle smiled at hearing that.
"But of course, I'll have to be sensible with my packing."
And she quickly went to her room to pack. After getting permission from everyone's parents, the trip was set.
When Friday came, the girls went to Applejack's house right after school.
"This is gonna be fun." said Apple Bloom.
"It was a good idea to invite our friends." replied Applejack.
Just then, Rarity's car pulled up. Sweetie Belle stepped out of the car, with her backpack and sleeping bag. While Rarity had a giant suitcase.
"Hello, darlings."
"Gee, Rarity, did you pack for a weekend or a month?" Applejack joked.
"I believe in being prepared."
Then Scootaloo's parents dropped her off.
"Hey, everyone. Are we all ready to go?"
"In a minute, Rainbow Dash still needs to get here." Applejack told her.
And just like that, Rainbow Dash skated up.
"Hey, guys I'm ready to camp."
"Great, now we can go." declared Applejack.
So Granny Smith came out, and they all piled into her truck. Scootaloo made sure to get a seat next to Rainbow Dash.
"You gals ready?" Granny Smith asked.
"Ready." the girls replied.
And then, they rode off.
"I'm really looking forward to this trip. What about you, Rainbow?" she asked.
"You bet, there's nothing like a weekend of chillaxing with your friends." Rainbow Dash replied.
Scootaloo smiled at that.
When they reached the campgrounds, they unloaded their stuff.
"Thanks for the lift, Granny." said Applejack, as she got out.
"You gals have a good time now. I'll be back Sunday afternoon." Granny replied.
After they got their bags, Granny Smith drove off. After checking in with the ranger, they went to find a spot to set up camp. After a while, Rarity spoke up.
"Are we almost there?"
"We're not going to a specific area, Rarity. We're looking for a spot." Rainbow Dash told her.
Soon they found one. It was pretty spacious, was close to the restrooms, and had a good view of the lake.
"Well let's start setting up our tents." said Applejack.
Rainbow Dash then turned to Scootaloo.
"I guess since, Apple Bloom and Sweetie Belle are bunking with their sisters, looks like you bunking with me, kid."
"That's cool, right?" Scootaloo questioned.
"As long as you don't snore."
"Nope, I don't snore at all."
Then they got to work, putting up their tents. The tents Applejack and Rainbow Dash bought were average sized, but Rarity's was very large and had rooms.
"Gee Rarity, you think you have enough room?" joked Rainbow Dash.
"Hey this way Sweetie Belle and I have plenty of place to put our things." Rarity replied.
Everyone else just smiled, and continued to set up camp. By the time evening came, their tents were pitched, gathered some firewood, and lit the fire.
"I must say, this is rather nice." Rarity said.
"Yeah, the air smells nice, the sky looks pretty, and even the sounds are nice." added Sweetie Belle.
"Yeah, there's nothing like getting away from it all." Applejack mentioned.
"You said it." agreed Apple Bloom.
"What do you think, Scootaloo?" asked Rainbow Dash.
But Scootaloo didn't answer right away. She noticed it was getting dark, really really dark.
"Scootaloo?"
"Huh, oh yeah it's great out here."
Scootaloo had a small fear of the dark, and it really dark outside. The girls then roasted hotdogs for dinner, and then made s'mores for dessert. They sang a couple campfire songs, and even told stories.
"Well I'd say it's time to settle in for the night." said Applejack.
"(Yawns), I'd say you're right, Applejack." agreed Rarity.
Rainbow Dash put out the fire, and the girls went to the change rooms to change into their jammies.
"Goodnight, everyone." Apple Bloom said.
"Good night." replied Sweetie Belle.
"Yeah, goodnight." added Scootaloo a little slowly.
And they all went into their tents. Scootaloo got into her sleeping bag, and lied down.
"Good night, Scootaloo." Rainbow Dash told her.
"Night Rainbow Dash."
Rainbow Dash turned off their lantern, and went to sleep. Scootaloo tried to, but couldn't. It was really dark, and the noises of the forest kept waking her every time she closed her eyes.
"Come on Scootaloo you have to toughen up." she thought to herself.
She thought if Rainbow Dash thought if she was a wimpy scaredy-cat she'd never take her under her wing.
By the time Scootaloo manage to fall asleep, it was time to get up again.
"Up and at 'em everybody!" Applejack announced.
"(Yawns), well that was a good night's sleep. You awake, Scoots?" Rainbow Dash, asked.
"Yeah I'm up."
Everyone got out of their tents, and went to get cleaned up and ready. Even though Scootaloo was tired, luckily some water in her face woke her up. After a breakfast of sausage and scrambled eggs, it was time to start their day.
"So what is on our agenda today?" Rarity questioned.
"We're gonna go on a nature hike and do a little fishing." Apple Bloom said, reading off a list.
"Sounds fun." Sweetie Belle replied.
"Yeah real great." added Rainbow Dash.
"I'm game." said Scootaloo.
So they got started. The hike went well, it was a good workout and they got to see some wildlife.
"I have to say this is actually quite lovely." observed Rarity.
"See, Rarity the outdoors is fun." Sweetie Belle told.
"Hey, I think I can see a moose." informed Scootaloo.
Rainbow Dash looked where Scootaloo was, and saw a moose eating some grass.
"Nice find, Scoots." Scootaloo smiled at the praise.
Fishing went well too. It wasn't easy, but each girl managed to catch a trout.
"Great now we got dinner for tonight." Applejack mentioned, holding up her fish.
"Um, how exactly do you get a fish ready for eating?" Rarity wondered.
"Yeah?" added Rainbow Dash.
"Don't worry, Apple Bloom and I got it covered."
The day was going so well, Scootaloo forgot about being scared for the moment.
"You were pretty good at fishing back there." Rainbow Dash told her.
"Thanks, it was my first time."
"Impressive."
Scootaloo smiled at hearing that, her plan was working.
Back at the campsite, Applejack and Apple Bloom cleaned the fish.
"Glad Granny showed us how to do this." Apple Bloom said.
"Yep, she knows her stuff." agreed Applejack.
They had fun, but then the sun started to go down. And those scary feelings were coming back for Scootaloo. At dinner, she slowly ate her trout.
"Anyone up for a ghost story?" suggested Rainbow Dash.
That made Scootaloo's heart drop. "Sure tell us one, Rainbow." encouraged Sweetie Belle.
"Come on Scootaloo, it's just gonna be a story." Scootaloo thought.
Rainbow Dash then started her story. She told the story a ghost that lived in the forest and preyed upon unsuspecting campers. Sneaking into their tents at night, and stealing their souls.
While Applejack, Apple Bloom, Rarity, and Sweetie Belle were into it, Scootaloo was terrified. Then it was time to go to bed, as everyone else slept Scootaloo trembled in her sleeping bag. Just then, nature called her.
"Oh, why now?" she whispered.
She really had to go, but she was so scared to leave the tent. Finally she couldn't take it anymore. She grabbed a flashlight, put on her shoes, and slowly left the tent. She waved the light around the camp, luckily there wasn't anything scary there.
She quickly scurried to the restrooms, a little ways away.
After she was done, it was time to make her way back.
"Okay, Scoots you can do this." She walked back, but heard a rustling sound and froze.
"Hello, is someone there?"
But there was nothing. So she continued on. But the forest at night was very creepy. The shadows seem to lurk, and every little sound made her freeze. Just then she heard something coming towards her!
She shrieked dropping her flashlight, and hurried off into another direction. She hid behind a tree, trembling and whimpering. Then a light began shining around her.
"Oh my gosh, it's the ghost come to eat my soul."
"Scootaloo."
"Oh my gosh it knows my name." "Scootaloo."
Scootaloo closed her eyes and waited for her fate to be sealed. The light then shined on her.
"Scoots, there you are."
Scootaloo slowly opened her eyes, and saw that is was Rainbow Dash.
"Rainbow Dash."
"What are you doing out here?"
"Well, what are you doing out here?"
"I noticed you were gone, and then I heard you shrieking. Now it's your turn." Scootaloo worried.
If she told the truth, then Rainbow Dash would never be her older sister figure.
"Hey, you can tell me." Rainbow Dash told her in a gentle voice.
Scootaloo looked up at her and then, sighed.
"I'm sorry Rainbow Dash. I went out here to use the restrooms, but then I got scared, and I was embarrassed."
"Why didn't you just say something?"
"Because...I wanted to show you how cool I was so you'd be like my older sister."
Rainbow Dash looked surprised.
"But I guess you think I'm not cool enough to be your little sister."
Scootaloo looked down sadly.
"You know, Scootaloo it's okay to be scared. And you know...there are times when I get scared too."
"Really?"
"Yeah, just don't go telling anybody I said that." Scootaloo smiled a little.
"So you want me to be like your older sister, huh?"
"Yeah."
"Yeah, I'm up for that." Rainbow Dash told.
"Really?" Scootaloo asked, hopefully.
"As long as you don't go running off in the middle of the night into the woods again."
"I promise."
"Great, then let's get back to camp."
And together they went back to their area.
When Sunday afternoon came, the girls gathered their stuff, and went to the parking lot to wait for Granny Smith.
"Well that was fun, wasn't it gals?" Applejack asked.
"Yeah." agreed Apple Bloom.
"I have to admit, camping wasn't so bad." Rarity replied.
"Think you'd do it again?" Sweetie Belle questioned.
"Perhaps."
"Well I had a good time. Especially I have a "big sister" now." Scootaloo mentioned.
Rainbow Dash smiled at hearing that. Then a familiar truck pulled into the lot.
"Hey there girls, you have a good weekend?" Granny Smith wondered.
The girls all said it was great, as they loaded their stuff into the truck.
"I get to sit next to Scootaloo." Rainbow Dash piped up, when they were all done.
Scootaloo smiled at hearing that. So the two "sisters" sat next to each other all the way home.
