Luke had just closed the deal on the Twickham house. He was feeling great. He would surprise Lorelai with the house and his mother's ring on their one year anniversary. It would be the start of their next chapter. He looked at his watch and realized that he hadn't spoken to her all day, and that Sookie's shower should have ended by now.
"Caesar, I'm running upstairs for a few minutes."
When he got into his apartment he grabbed a beer from the fridge and dialed her cell number.
"Hello?"
"Hey, how did the party go?" He asked as he sank into his favourite chair he heard weird noises in the background.
"What party?" She asked distractedly. "Oh the shower, we had to cancel that."
Luke sat up straight, "Is Sookie okay?" he asked.
She melted at the genuine concern in his voice, "Yeah, she's fine. She's in labour. I'm at the hospital. Jackson keeps coming out to tell me that it will be any minute. Which is driving me crazy because I don't want to leave this spot but I'm starting to get hungry and have to pee."
Luke had set down his beer as she spoke and grabbed his keys, "Lorelai, go pee!"
She laughed, "I'm okay. Now that I have you on the phone I want to hear your voice."
"What hospital are you at?" He asked as he locked his apartment and headed to the kitchen.
"Saint Francis, but you don't have to come."
"I'm making burgers for you, Sookie and Jackson. Hopefully by the time I'm there she can eat. Now go pee and I'll see you as soon as I can."
A little while later Lorelai saw Jackson walking towards the waiting room.
"Hey," he smiled, "Sookie is asking for you. She and the baby are doing great! Room 432."
Lorelai hugged him, "Congratulations Daddy! Hey Luke is on his way with some food."
Jackson moaned, "You've got a keeper there! I'm starving! I'm off to make some calls."
Lorelai laughed as she headed to Sookie's room. She pushed the door open slowly and said, "Soooo? What's going on here?"
Sookie smiled and waved her friend in, "Martha would love to meet her Aunt Lorelai!"
Lorelai giggled and bounced over to Sookie, "A GIRL!"
"Yup, a little girl. Now I just have to tell Jackson that I'm done. We have one of each, I'm good!"
Lorelai cradled the baby and couldn't take her eyes off the tiny features, so adorable and sweet. "Maybe give yourself some time to make that decision. Oh Sookie, she is beautiful, she looks just like you."
"Thanks Sweetie!"
There was a small knock at the door, "Hello? Is it safe to come in?" Luke asked from the other side of the door.
The women laughed.
"Come in!" Sookie called. As he walked in she gasped, "Luke Danes, after hours of labour did you bring me a burger?"
Luke froze, not sure how to answer, "Um, yes"
Sookie's face lit up, "You are the best man alive. And yes I know the father of my children is out there somewhere!"
Luke smiled and shook his head, "Yours has extra onions."
"It is official, I love you!"
Lorelai laughed as she danced with the baby, getting out of the way for Sookie to eat.
Luke placed the burger on the table and swung it over Sookie's bed. He pulled a bottle of water from the bag and set it down as well, "Fries or onion rings?" He asked as he reached into the bag, "Both?" He placed them down for her and then moved closer to Lorelai.
"Can you hold her while I eat?" She asked Luke.
"I've never held a baby." He said sternly.
"It's fine," Lorelai reassured. "Sit in the armchair. Now support her head and keep her calm."
Luke held the tiny girl in his arms and fell in love, "Sookie, she's beautiful and she looks just like you." He said without looking up.
"You guys are great for my ego." She grabbed her camera from the side table, "Lorelai, you have to take their picture. Luke is holding a baby for the first time!"
Lorelai placed her burger down and grabbed the camera, "Smile!" She took a picture even though Luke didn't look up and then another when he finally did.
A few hours later Luke and Lorelai walked out of the hospital. She sighed at her first breath of fresh air in hours.
"Wow, What a day!"
He turned to face her, "Hi!" he smiled as he kissed her.
She held him in her arms and blurted out, "I'm late."
"For what?" He asked, unphased by her statement.
"My period, Luke."
There was no sound or movement.
"Did you have a stroke?"
Luke pulled away from her slowly, still keeping his hand on her waist, "Are you saying -"
"Nothing is 100%. But we had that night a few weeks ago. And yesterday I was nauseous all morning. And today I was craving an apple. And I'm late."
"Shouldn't you take a test?"
She still couldn't read his calm face. "I think it might be too early."
"We should try, you are just going to drive yourself crazy until you know. You go home, I'll buy a test from the pharmacy right over there and I'll meet you there. Don't worry."
"Luke, I'm scared."
He could see the tears in her eyes, "Don't be scared, you're not alone this time. You'll never be alone again." He kissed her softly and smiled. "Go home, be calm. I'll be there soon."
Lorelai opened the door to her Jeep and spun around, "LUKE!"
He turned around, "Yeah?"
"Get more than one test."
He nodded, " I was thinking of getting at least three."
She laughed, "Okay good." She started getting into the car.
"HEY," he called to her. When she looked back up at him he smiled brightly, "I love you."
"I love you too."
One hour and three glasses of water later Lorelai came out of the bathroom and sat on her bed beside Luke.
"So?" he asked
"I set the timer. I peed on all four. Now we wait."
"I need to tell you something before these test results are in," Luke announced.
"Okay?"
"We're in a really good place, this relationship of ours. I've been in love with you for a long time now. And from day one us being together has seemed so right to me. I did something today, I was going to tell you next week for our one year anniversary, but I think now is a better time."
The timer went off in the bathroom and the both turned to look at the door and then back to each other. "Lorelai, what I'm saying is, I love you. I want to spend the rest of my life with you and I want that to start now. I don't have the ring with me now, but will you marry me?"
"You have a ring?" She asked in shock.
"It's my mother's ring. I couldn't give it to Nicole, because deep down I knew that it wasn't for her. It has always been for you." He was on one knee, staring up at her.
"Wow!" She cupped his cheek with her hand and sighed.
"Oh and what I meant to tell you was that I bought the Twickham house." He pulled out the contract from his pocket. "I wanted a place to have a family with you."
Tears were streaming down her face, "A family?"
"Yeah, of course! You're a wonderful mother, I always wanted to be a Dad and I'm madly in love with you. Of course I want to have kids with you. But you still haven't said if you will marry me."
Lorelai let out the breath she felt she was holding all day. She began to nod her head and more tears flowed, "Yes Luke. Yes, I want to marry you!"
Luke scooped her into his arms as he stood up and she cried into his chest. He was kissing her head, stroking her hair and trying to figure out what to do about the crying.
"MOM?" Rory's voice called from the front door. "Are you here? I need to talk."
"Up here," Lorelai answered as she wiped her tears and pulled back from Luke.
They heard her footsteps on the stairs, "I'm going to run to the bathroom first," Rory called as she sped by the bedroom door.
Lorelai looked at Luke with wide eyes, "Oh No!"
"What?" Luke wondered for a second, then he remembered and covered his mouth.
"Mom? Why are there FOUR pregnancy tests on the counter?" Rory called.
Lorelai panicked. "How do you know those are pregnancy tests, Missy?"
"Well, I'm not an idiot," Rory said as she walked to the bedroom, "And the boxes that say 'Pregnancy Test' are piled in the garbage can. Oh and the instructions saying 'How to use your pregnancy test' is sitting there. AND one of them is digital soooooo now that I have explained that, you wanna tell me something?" She was leaning against the door frame with her arms crossed.
"I asked your Mother to marry me," Luke blurted out.
Rory's eyes grew wide, "Oh my god! You guys are getting married AND having a baby!"
"We don't know about the baby yet. We haven't checked the tests yet." Lorelai explained.
Rory laughed, "Oh I thought you did."
"Why? Because Luke wouldn't ask me to marry him unless I was pregnant?" Lorelai asked defensively.
"No, but I saw the tests. And I had assumed you already knew."
"Oh my god!" Luke smiled.
"What?!" Lorelai's head was spinning.
"Mom, all four had the same results. You're pregnant!"
All three of them shared a group hug.
"I guess we better start planning a wedding!" Rory smiled.
"I have to call Sookie!" Lorelai gasped. "Rory, go grab your list making paper and meet me in the kitchen."
"Are you sure you don't want to wait till tomorrow? It's been a long day," Luke said as he absently stroked Lorelai's stomach.
"I just got a second wind. But you can get some sleep if you'd like."
Before she could turn to join Rory, Luke took her face in his hands, "I love you!"
"I love you too."
