A/N: Sorry for taking so long to update this one. But if you have caught my other story "A Few Years in the Life" you'll know that I was updating and finished that story in the meantime.
I will keep on this one now until it's done. Thanks for the follows and kind words.

Lorelai woke up to the sounds of laughter and talking downstairs and the smell of Luke's cooking. She lay in bed for a moment trying to gather her strength and optimism to face the people down there when there was a small knock on her door.

"Mom? Are you awake?" Rory whispered.

"Yeah, babe. Come on in."

Rory walked in with a cup of coffee, "Breakfast is almost ready, Luke will help you down the stairs so you can eat with all of us."

"Who's all of us?" Lorelai asked nervously as she began to get dressed.

"You, me, Luke, Grandma, Grandpa and Logan. Sookie might join us in a bit, Luke talked to her last night. And wait a second, if you're supposed to be on bed rest shouldn't you stay, you know, in bed?"

Lorelai huffed as she finished getting dressed, "I can't stay in bed for a full three days. You know Luke will take care of me, But I need to be able to dress myself, wash, comb my hair, you know, be a human."

"I know, but Mom."

"Rory, I promise I will be careful. No work, no dancing, I promise to stay in this house. Luke arranged for my doctor to come here to do my checkup on Tuesday afternoon. I will not be taking chances with this pregnancy."

Lorelai dressed in an outfit Emily had somehow found time to shop for the previous day. It was a pair of lounge pants (loose fitting but still a flattering cut), a thin zip up hoodie and the softest t-shirt she had ever worn. When she entered the living room Emily smiled, fairly certain this was the first time since Lorelai was six-years-old that she wore clothes that Emily suggested.

"MOM! Where did you get this outfit? It is the softest, most comfortable clothes I've ever worn."

Emily just smiled, "And they don't say anything vulgar on your behind."

Rory gave a confused look.

"Grandma caught me in my 'Juicy' sweats again."

Rory laughed.

"Well my only child deserves the best and I was in shock when I realized that you didn't own anything made of cashmere," Emily responded matter of factly.

The doorbell rang and Rory ran to get it. She smiled the moment her eyes fell on Logan, as he was holding a few boxes from Weston's Bakery.

"Look at you, bringing us baked goods," Rory gushed as she led him in.

"I've heard the way to the hearts of the Gilmore Girls is with baked goods," Logan smirked.

"Burgers work too," Luke smiled at Rory.

Rory stayed in the living room with Lorelai and her parents while Rory and Luke set up the kitchen for breakfast.

After a nice breakfast Luke was able to convince Richard and Emily to go home and promised to check in with them later. Rory and Logan were going to keep Lorelai company while Luke checked in at the diner.

"Are you sure you're okay being left with them?" Luke whispered in Lorelai's ear as he went to kiss her goodbye.

"Yeah, it's fine. Rory really seems to like this guy so I better swallow my concerns and start liking him."

"I shouldn't be too long. Caesar, Lane and Mike are working so well together I don't think anyone is missing me."

"I doubt that highly. No one cooks like you!"

Luke planted a kiss on her lips, his kisses were so warm and comforting she wished she could keep him on the couch with her all day.

She clung to his collar and could feel his lips curve into a smile.

"I have to go, I promise there will be much more kissing when I get back," He said with his lips still touching hers.

"Okay, but you better also bring me home a burger," She called after him.

"And fries! I know," he smiled.

Luke parked his truck in front of the diner to ensure he wouldn't stay too long. When he opened the door he saw Caesar talking to a young girl and he looked frustrated.

"Yes, this place is called Luke's and yes Luke works here, he's just not here right now!"

"Hey, I'm here Caesar," Luke announced. "What's going on?"

The young girl turned to face Luke and furrowed her brow. She was ten or eleven years old, dark brown curly hair, a smattering of freckles on her nose and cheeks and red glasses. She was looking at Luke intently, studying him and then she started.

"Are you Luke Danes?"

"Yeah"

"My name is April and I need your hair with the roots." April stated

"What?" Luke snapped.

"Or some saliva, maybe a cheek swab."

"What the hell are you talking about?"

"I go to Martin Van Buren Middle School in Woodbridge and I REALLY want to win the Science Fair this year!" She started.

"I'm going to take hair samples from three men, run DNA tests on them, and figure out which one's my father. My uncle works for a lab in Hartford, so he's going to oversee me. But I'll be doing all the actual work myself." She paused to let Luke respond, but he just stared at her. So she continued, "Science fairs have gotten so Hollywood lately. It's no longer about science being appreciated. There's got to be a twist, a gimmick. Something flashy. I figure this is perfect. Real science, DNA testing, with a flash of human drama. Who's my daddy? Kind of like Mama Mia."

Luke finally blinked, he looked over at Caesar, "Is this some kind of weird joke that I don't get?"

Caesar shrugged and shook his head, "No idea!"

Luke finally addressed April calmly, "Look, kid I don't know what is going on but my life is pretty crazy right now. If this is some kind of prank can we pick this up in a few weeks? Or can you try this on Taylor? I'll give you fifty bucks."

April huffed, "Look, this isn't a joke. My Mom never talks about my Dad so I'm doing some investigating. I already have the other two samples. This is my last stop. I go to the lab tomorrow, and the fair's next week. Please just let me do this!" She then reached up and grabbed at Luke's hair.

"Ow!"

"Thanks!" April smiled as she put the hair in a Ziploc bag and took off.

Luke just stood there in shock. He shook his head to rid his mind from the whirlwind that just blew into his life. He planned to forget this until after the wedding, he didn't want to further stress out his Bride, who is already on bedrest. This was the last thing she needed to - he stopped in his tracks when he saw Miss Patty and Babette sitting and whispering. They had obviously witnessed the whole exchange with April. He made a beeline to them and sat in an empty chair at their table.

"Luke!" Miss Patty smiled, "How's Lorelai? I heard she's on bedrest."

"Yes, Lorelai is on bedrest! She's going to be fine, I think, but you need to help me."

"Anything, Doll!" Babette rasped.

"Okay, so we need to avoid any undue stress. I want the wedding to go on as planned, so we need to avoid her getting upset."

"Of course," Miss Patty agreed.

Luke nodded and motioned towards the counter, "So what you just witnessed with that kid claiming she might be my kid …"

"We'll keep that quiet. Plus you might want to look into all of that with some adults before taking it too seriously," Patty assured him.

"Yeah! And we'll make sure everyone around town keeps it quiet too," Babette added. "Don't worry Toots, we're on this! Just make sure we know before anyone else if that little pissher is actually your kid. If East Side Tilly gets this scoop before me, I will die!"

Luke rolled his eyes, "I promise once I have the news and am ready to tell anyone other than Lorelai, you will be the first to know. Just please keep a lid on this."

"You can count on us, Doll!"
Luke smiled and got up, "Thanks Ladies!"

A/N #2: I did take some of the scene where April and Luke meet right from the script, I apologize to ASP and the writers, but I did change it up a bit.
