Lorelai had convinced Rory to go back to school. She promised to call if anything changed and swore that she would take it easy. Rory of course called Luke before leaving to ensure he'd be home soon.
Luke was so anxious about going to the house. He knew that Lorelai could read him like a book, she would know something is up. If it wasn't days before their wedding, or if he didn't need to care for her vigilantly he might have gone fishing for a few days to clear his head and make a plan. But they were about to get married, they are partners now, so they needed to make this plan together. He didn't know how to tell her even though he had practiced a speech all evening.
He came into the house and was greeted by the sound of Lorelai's infectious laugh. He smiled as he toed off his boots and rounded the corner with bags of food. She was on the phone and when she noticed him her smile expanded ten times wider.
"Sook, I gotta go. The World's Best Almost Husband just walked in with bags of food! Okay Sweetie, talk to you tomorrow."
Luke placed the bags on the coffee table and sat beside her, "How are you feeling?"
"Better now that you're here!"
"Are you talking to me or the burger?"
They shared a laugh.
"I'm equally excited for both," she winked at him.
"I'll take it!" He chuckled as he handed her the burger from the bag.
Lorelai began talking about her day, "So I think I'm starting to like Logan. He brought all those things from Weston's, he was kind of funny, he can relate to me about the nightmare parents, although his sound worse than mine. Can you believe that? Me admitting there are parents out there worse than mine? I mean, we're in a good place now, it's so great how great they are being about us." She looked over at Luke and saw that he was totally distracted, he was staring off into space absently eating his salad. She placed her burger down and leaned closer to him. She rubbed his arm softly, "Where did you go, Babe?"
"What?" He asked, coming back to the moment.
"Luke, what's wrong? You're so distracted."
Luke could see the concern and worry on Lorelai's face and his resolve snapped. He put his food down and turned to face her, he placed his hands on her arms and looked her deep in the eyes, "How are you feeling?"
"I'm fine, I swear. I went to the bathroom a bunch of times today and there was no bleeding at all. I even took another pregnancy test to make sure. Everything is good. I promise."
"Okay, because something happened today that might cause some stress. I've been freaked out by it and am having a hard time processing."
"Wow, you just used the word 'processing', this must be big!"
"Yeah, so when I was in the diner this kid came in to talk to me. She knew my name as was babbling about a science fair that she was being a part of at a school in Woodbridge. She went on and on and I was just staring at her and she wouldn't get to the point."
"Like you right now?"
Luke shook his head, "She pulled out some of my hair to test it because she thinks I might be her father!"
Lorelai gasped so hard that the top half of her body bounced up a bit, "What?!"
"Yeah, it's crazy. She didn't even tell me her last name. She just was odd and babbled and then took my hair, snapped a picture of me and took off. I was in such shock that by the time I thought to follow her out it was too late and she was gone. What the hell am I going to do?"
Lorelai took a deep breath, "Wow. Is this for real?"
"Well it really happened. But is this kid telling the truth? That I can't tell you. Like I said, I don't even know who her mother is, she never told me her last name." Luke was getting agitated but desperately trying to hide it to avoid stressing her out.
Lorelai grabbed her laptop and opened it, "Okay I never took you as a huge player, so just tell me the names of the women you slept with in that time frame and we'll search them to see who has a daughter."
"You can do that?"
"Well it can be done, can I do it, is another question."
Luke chuckled.
"So tell me, did you have a girlfriend back then?"
"This is so awkward."
" I know Hon, but it's not like we're kids and think that our soulmate has never been with anyone else. I met Rachel, remember? You know that Rory wasn't dropped off by a stork, right?"
Again Luke softly chuckled but this time relaxed into the couch, "Umm let's see, around that time I was with Anna for a few months."
"Did Anna have a last name?"
"Nardini"
Lorelai typed and clicked as Luke looked on. "Okay, I found a phone number for Anna Nardini in Woodbridge. Apparently she owns a shop there too. You need to call her and ask her if this is your kid." Lorelai scribbled the number on a napkin. "You can go in the other room if you want, or go to your place."
Luke let out a pained sigh, pushed the hat off his head and held his head in his hands. "This is not how I envisioned us spending the days before our wedding!"
"I know Butch, but it is what it is. I know you and if there is even a chance you have a kid out there you need to know about it."
"She's going to think I'm a deadbeat."
"Who?"
"April! My kid. If she's mine. I wasn't there for her whole life already."
Lorelai softened. She placed her laptop on the table and took Luke's hands in hers, "You are not a deadbeat. You can't abandon someone you never knew existed! This isn't like Rory and Chris. He knew about her before I had an ultrasound, this kid's Mom didn't even tell you she was pregnant. She never even gave you the chance to be there or be the prick!"
"But what happens if -"
"Luke, I love you, but there is no use in playing the 'What If' game. Just call this Anna chick and see if she's the mother of this girl and if you're the father! Maybe this girl isn't Anna's kid and we'll have to track her down another way."
Luke nodded, "You're right. I'll call her."
With that Luke took the phone from her and called the number she had scribbled on the napkin. He reached out and squeezed her knee as he listened to the ringing.
"Helllooo!" Anna answered in a sing-song voice.
"Anna?" Luke asked.
"Yes. Who's this?"
"Hey Anna, it's Luke. Luke Danes. I have kind of a weird question."
"Oh no, did she come to you too?" Anna gasped.
"So April is your daughter? She never told me her last name, I guessed based on how old she is."
"Yes, April is my daughter." Suddenly Anna had a bit of an edge to her tone.
"And is she mine as well?" Luke asked.
"April is mine and mine alone. I went through my pregnancy alone and have raised her for eleven years on my own."
"Hey, wait just a minute here, I never knew that you were pregnant, so if this child is mine you can't blame me for not being there. I broke up with you, not my child."
"We're a package deal! You leave one, you leave us both!"
"I didn't know there was a BOTH of you!"
"It doesn't matter, we're fine on our own."
"ANNA! Is April my child or not?!"
Anna huffed. "Yes, Luke. April is technically your daughter. I don't know where she got this idea that it could be one of three guys. I mean Mama Mia is my Mom's favourite movie so maybe it was because of her last visit with her."
"Anna!" Luke yelled and stood up, he began to pace. "How could you not tell me that you were having my kid?"
Lorelai sighed. This was it, their lives would never be the same after this phone call. She had images of courtroom battles a la Kramer Vs Kramer or Luke doing whatever he could to see his kid like Mrs Doubtfire. Whatever happened this Anna already seemed like a nut. What person who met Luke wouldn't want them in their lives? Who wouldn't want Luke around their kid? Even flaky Liz knew that Luke was a great influence on a kid. There had been many times since she met Luke that Lorelai wished Luke was Rory's Dad. Even Rory admitted to feeling that way one time. And the baby growing inside her now, even though it is less than three months old Lorelai knew that Luke already would die to keep the baby safe. This Anna must be insane to not want Luke in her child's life.
When she zoned back into what Luke was saying he had seemed to calm down a bit, "Yeah I know that I was never really a fan of kids. But you had to know that MY kid would have been different. Of course I was grumpy, my Dad had died just a few months before we started dating."
He sat down in the armchair defeated.
"Look, I'm getting married in a few days. Stuff came up that might change some of the plans but once those are settled I will call you. I would really like you and April to be at the wedding. I want her to start to be a part of my life. We can talk about the details and how this is all going to work at another time, but you know I hate lawyers so I hope we can work this out on our own." He nodded a few times, obviously trying to process this all. "Yeah, ok. You talk to her and call me tomorrow. Thanks. Bye!" He turned off the phone and exhaled a huge breath.
"I have an eleven-year-old daughter," he locked eyes with her and then started to cry, "Why didn't she tell me?"
Lorelai rushed to his side and hugged him, "I don't know. I can't wait to see you holding our baby!"
He pulled her onto his lap and curled into her hug, he hadn't cried like this since his Dad died. He had never cried in front of another person before, ever. But the stress of being scared about Lorelai and their baby over the last few days and then this shock just threw him over the edge.
Over the years Luke had always made Lorelai feel safe and protected. As she sat on his lap, with him clinging to her and crying into her chest, she stroked his head and back. She felt so much love for this man that she wanted to find this Anna woman and scream at her until she lost her voice. But then the idea that this woman was Luke's daughter's mother hit her like a ton of bricks, this woman, who she had never met, was now going to be a part of her life, for the rest of her life. Heaven help them all.
