Wednesday morning Rory went to her early class and then headed to Stars Hollow to be with her Mom for the doctor's visit.
She opened the door to the house and smiled, "Mom, I have tacos!"
"Yay! Get in here! I'm on the couch."
Rory rushed to her Mom's side, handed her the bag of tacos and kissed her cheek, "Hey, what time is the appointment?"
Lorelai put her nose in the bag and inhaled, "Thank god you went to Yale near this amazing Taco place!" She pulled out two tacos and handed one to Rory, "The appointment is in an hour and I told you Mr. Amazing arranged for the doctor to come here, right?"
"Yeah, you did. But you said there was news that's not phone worthy so can you tell me now?"
Lorelai put down the half of the taco that was left and wiped her mouth. "Okay Kid, this is big. I'm still a bit in shock. Luke, my Luke, our Luke, is a Dad."
"I know that you're pregnant, why is that news?"
"No. Well yes, but that isn't the news. A few days ago an eleven-year-old girl came into the diner suggesting that she might be Luke's daughter."
"WHAT?!" Rory practically spit her mouthful of taco across the room, she grabbed a napkin and wiped her mouth. "Mom, what are you talking about?"
Lorelai sighed and filled Rory in on the whole story. The part that Luke told her that happened in the diner and then a blow by blow of what happened when he came home.
"Wow! Wow. I can't even … Wait, so are they coming to the wedding?"
"Well, we're going to see what the doctor says today and figure out if we are still planning a wedding. We might just have to get Reverend Skinner to come here and perform a quickie."
Rory softened and tilted her head, "Mom, you're going to be fine. I hope this hasn't caused too much stress."
"Oh kid, it's all good but our sweet, strong Luke. He broke down so hard. He was sobbing and asked me why she didn't want him to be the father of her kid?"
Rory's eyes filled with tears, "Poor Luke!"
"I told him I had no idea because I was so thrilled that he would be the father of my next kid. And that I have often fantasized he was the father of my other kid."
"Me too," Rory nodded.
The front door opened and Luke came in, "Hello?" he called.
"We're in the living room!" Lorelai answered.
As soon as he rounded the corner Rory went to him and gave him a hug.
"Hey Kid," he looked at Lorelai with confusion on his face because both he and Rory were not big huggers.
Lorelai mouthed "April" to him and he nodded.
"I'm okay, Rory. I'm getting over the shock and just focusing on your Mom and the baby today." He squeezed her close.
Without a word she released her grip on him and smiled, "Yeah. You're right." She turned to Lorelai, "Do you need anything from upstairs before the doctor comes?"
"No, I'm all good. Just going to the washroom."
While Lorelai was still in the washroom there was a knock at the door, Luke went to answer it as Rory tidied up the living room.
"Emily!" Luke greeted
Rory's head snapped up, "Grandma?"
"Hello Luke," Emily greeted as she walked past him.
"Hello, Rory. Where is your mother?"
Lorelai rounded the corner, "Mom! What are you doing here?"
"I wanted to be here for your doctor's visit." Emily's tone was implying that Lorelai was insane for asking.
Before anything else could go on, Dr. Worrik arrived. He asked Lorelai a few questions after she confirmed that everyone there was family and the doctor could speak freely.
"Well Lorelai, I looked at your bloodwork and based on that and the fact that there has been no more bleeding I'm going to say that this was a case of implantation bleeding. It happened a little later in the pregnancy than normal but the baby is completely healthy. Your HCG levels are right on point for where you are in pregnancy. Now I brought this portable doppler so we can hear the heartbeat.
Emily was seated across the couch intently watching the doctor with the small contraption. Rory sat on the arm of the chair Emily was seated in and they held hands.
Luke was behind the couch watching the doctor squirt some gel on Lorelai's stomach.
"Now you all need to know that even with the machines within the office it could take some time to find the heartbeat." He then took a little wand and rubbed it around Lorelai's belly spreading the gel.
Lorelai was holding a small box attached to the wand trying to hold her breath and hide her fear.
There wasn't a sound in the room, it was extremely odd for this house to be so still and quiet. It felt like forever, but in reality after just a minute a small noise came from the box in Lorelai's hands.
Lorelai and Emily smiled brightly as the whooshing noise filled the room. Both Luke and Rory looked confused.
Lorelai reached out and put her hand on Luke's, "That's our baby's heartbeat."
Luke's eyes went from her stomach to her face and he broke out the biggest smile she'd ever seen on him, "Does it sound good, Doc?" he asked, not able to take his eyes from Lorelai's.
Rory noticed Emily wipe some tears from her cheek.
"Very strong. Everything is on track. To ease your mind let's set up an appointment in two weeks and then go to the monthly visits. And as for the wedding on the weekend, you're good to go. You are officially off of bedrest."
Luke, Rory and Emily all let out a sigh of relief.
"Thank you so much, Doc!" Lorelai smiled with tears in her eyes.
"My pleasure."
Luke saw the doctor to the door, shook his hand and thanked him for the house call.
Emily took off to the kitchen to call Richard and give him the good news.
Rory was sitting in a little bit of shock, "Wow. That was a really weird and intense little sound."
Lorelai smiled at Rory's awe, "It is pretty cool."
Rory shook her head to get herself back to reality, "What can I do to help?"
"Well, the wedding is on, go to the kitchen, grab our "To Do" list and let's get cracking. I'm going to call Sookie and give her the good news."
A short while later three generations of Gilmore Girls and Sookie were confirming plans, and in full wedding mode. Rory and Emily were on the phone, Emily on the landline, Rory on her cell with vendors and friends finalizing plans.
"So this is the final number of guests, right?" Sookie asked.
"I need to check with Luke, there may be two more."
Sookie looked confused, "Who is Luke inviting that I don't know?"
"Anna and April Nardini."
Rory looked over and tried to hide the shock on her face that her Mom would bring this up with Grandma in the house.
Sookie shook her head, "Who?"
Lorelai stood up and took Sookie by the arm, she led her to the living room. "Oh my god, I totally forgot my Mom was in the room. That has never happened."
"What's going on, Sweetie?" Sookie was full of concern.
Lorelai grabbed some wedding magazines, opened them to random pages and then quietly filled Sookie in on the story of Anna and April."
"But there's been no DNA test yet?"
"Well apparently April is planning one for her science project but I am going to tell Luke he should get another one done, just to be sure. You know Luke, he might have already started a college fund."
"That's going to be a tough conversation."
"Thankfully I'm having his baby, so he can't get too mad at me," Lorelai's tone made it clear to Sookie that she was trying to convince herself more than anything else.
Sookie made a mental note to talk to Luke, maybe she could ease the path to that conversation, it was the least she could do since she's the BFOTB.
