Luke woke up at 4:45am as usual. He showered and gave himself a close shave. He spent more time grooming himself this morning than he had in his entire life. He was in the middle of getting dressed when his phone rang, "Hello?" He answered absently.
"Hi Luke, I'm outside. Do you have time to talk?"
Luke was nervous to hear the seriousness in Sookie's voice. "Yeah, I'll come down and let you in."
A minute later, Luke and Sookie stood quietly in the diner. She had declined his offer of coffee and so now he awkwardly smiled at her.
"If you're not here to tell me that Lorelai wants to call off the wedding, and you're not here to get some coffee for her, you need to fill me in because I'm starting to freak out."
"Luke, you know that I love you guys together. I was rooting for you guys before either of you would admit that you wanted to be together."
Luke nodded, "I know."
Sookie was worried that she would lose her nerve so she just blurted it out, "You need to get your own DNA test with April. You need to make sure 100% that she is yours before you let her into your life as your child. Lorelai is having your baby and you owe it to this new family of yours to know for sure. You can't trust Anna, I mean what kind of woman keeps a child a secret from a guy like you! You're the nicest, kindest -"
"Sookie! I did it."
She paused and looked at him with confusion etched on her face.
"I know what I have with Lorelai and I know what I am getting into with her parents. I'm not trusting this type of information with an eleven-year-old's science project."
Sookie stood a bit taller and nodded, "Good. Yes, that's great. When will you get the results?"
"I paid to have the results rushed and they should be delivered at nine am today. We'll know before the wedding. I need to give Lorelai an out."
"An out?"
Guilt washed over Luke's face, "I wasn't there for my kid."
Sookie grabbed him and pulled him into a bear hug. "You didn't know! She kept your child from you. You are nothing like him. It's not the same at all." They both knew that she was talking about Christopher. She gave him another squeeze before releasing him to look him in the eye, "You are nothing like him! Please tell me you know that."
He took her hands in his, "Thanks, I mean logically I know it."
"Luke, there isn't a person in this town who doesn't think you will make a phenomenal father."
"Thanks, but this is enough emotion for now. We have a big day ahead. Thanks for always looking out for her, you are the best BFOTB ever!"
A few hours later, Lorelai woke up to the sound of her quacking duck alarm clock. Luke hated the pigs so they settled on the ducks. But this morning she woke up alone. Luke insisted on not seeing her until she was walking down the aisle. She sat up and reached for her phone, dialed Luke's number and smiled.
"Luke's," he answered.
"I thought you were taking today off, it's your wedding day!"
"Someone's gotta make the coffee for this town."
"Angel!"
"Junkie!"
"So you know I'm a junkie and refuse to see me this morning but are serving my favourite coffee to everyone else?" Lorelai asked teasingly.
"Don't worry, you'll have some of my coffee today, I promise. Before anything else I should let you know that the results of the DNA test arrived a few minutes ago. April is mine."
Lorelai took in a deep breath, "Are you okay?" she asked him.
"Yeah, I guess. I'm just going to put this on the back burner till next week. Right now I want to focus on us, our wedding and our honeymoon."
"Whatever you want. But I like that plan."
Just then there was a knock at Lorelai's bedroom door and Rory poked her head in the room, "Hey Mom, Caesar just dropped off some breakfast and coffee, get down here while it's still warm." She then disappeared from the doorway.
"Wow, you're good!" Lorelai smiled into the phone.
"I love you too," Luke whispered. "Now go eat!"
"I'm going, I'm going. Love you. See you at the end of the aisle."
"Bye"
Lorelai scurried out of bed and went to the kitchen excited to have breakfast with Rory. She was surprised to find Sookie and Emily at the table too.
"Wow, I didn't know we were having a party," Lorelai joked.
"It's your wedding day, of course we're here to celebrate with you," Sookie smiled.
Rory finished laying out the food from Luke's and Sookie, she handed her Mom a mug of coffee and poured one for Emily.
"Sookie, your quiche is divine," Emily gushed.
"Thank you Mrs. Gilmore."
"Oh please, call me Emily."
Lorelai smiled, she never remembered seeing her Mom so chill. She was dressed in a light pink velour tracksuit and although she looked adorable it was throwing off Lorelai seeing her Mom so casual. She then noticed that Rory and Sookie were wearing light pink velour track pants.
"Hey what's with the matching clothes? And why don't I get any?"
The three ladies smiled at each other. Rory and Sookie put their velour jackets on and the three ladies turned their backs to Lorelai revealing the embroidered messages. Rory's said "D.O.T.B.", Sookie's said "B.F.O.T.B." with letters like a sports jersey and Emily's said "Mother of the Bride" in a very elegant font.
"So cute!" Lorelai squealed, "I can't believe you two got Mom to go along with it!"
"I can be fun, Lorelai," Emily insisted.
"She would only do it if we didn't put M.O.B. on hers," Rory explained, "And here's yours!"
Lorelai grabbed the bag Rory offered and pulled out the white velour tracksuit that had "Bride" on the back of the jacket in the same font as Emily's. "I love it!" she gushed.
"We'll wear these clothes to the salon and then change at the Inn," Sookie explained. "There's also a Tshirt for you that says Bride, from your Mom, it's made from bamboo and the softest thing I've ever felt, a white baseball cap for you that says Bribe in the same style as your clothes, we used the same blue for the writing as the new hat we got for Luke that says Groom in white letters."
"Oh my god, you guys, this is amazing!"
"And because your Mom wouldn't let me put 'Bride' on your pants I got you these." Sookie handed Lorelai a small bag which had a white pair of panties in it that said "Property of Luke Danes" on the butt.
"These are PERFECT! I can't wait to show him!"
Sookie and Rory laughed, Emily tried to hide her chuckle and shook her head.
The women finished eating their breakfast and grabbed their things to head off to the salon. When they opened the front door Lorelai, Rory and Sookie were surprised to find a limo.
"Is this for us?" Sookie asked.
"Of course!" Emily said, "It's my daughter's wedding day. Yes, the Dragonfly's shuttle is adorable, but this is a special day."
"Mom, you said you wouldn't go all out," Lorelai started. When she noticed that Emily looked worried that she had started a fight Lorelai quickly changed her demeanor, "But a limo is a great idea!"
Nothing was going to ruin this day, even if Emily tried to take it over. Lorelai was finally in a place with her Mom where she knew most of what she did was out of love.
The Bride and her little squad had a great time getting their hair, makeup and nails done. Sookie finished first and left to go home and help Jackson get the kids ready for the wedding. Lorelai, Rory and Emily headed over to the Dragonfly to get ready.
This was the first wedding at the Dragonfly that was entirely in Michel's hands. He insisted on taking care of the decorations and everything not food related. He wanted to prove to Lorelai that he could handle this aspect of the job AND that he was her friend, not just an employee. The colours they both settled on were cobalt blue and magenta, and Michel had very elegantly decorated the Inn and the grounds with those colours. He had even managed to weave some fabric together making a plaid design.
The chuppah that Luke built years ago was set up with flowers attached. The seats for the guests were set and starting to get filled.
Luke was waiting in Lorelai's office (she was in the cottage out back, where they would be spending their wedding night). There was a knock at the door and Luke was shocked, "Jess! What are you doing here?"
"Mom called. She said you were getting married and that you didn't have a best man. Why didn't you call me?"
Luke walked back into the office and Jess followed.
"Jess, weddings don't really feel like your scene. Plus I know that you are not Lorelai's biggest fan."
"That's not true, but whatever. I owe you man. You were the only one that believed in me. I'm here for you. And I don't hate her. She's a protective Mom, I was a punk dating her daughter. I think we both care about you enough to be civil for the next few hours."
"Thanks," Luke smiled and then pulled Jess into a hug. "Here, since you're my best man you should hold the rings."
"Okay. Anything else? I was thinking of a good toast on my drive here, so don't worry, I won't embarrass you there. Do we have time for a bachelor party?"
"Very funny!" Luke scoffed. Suddenly Luke got serious, "Hey there is something that I want to talk to you about before this all starts. I have a kid and she's going to be at the wedding."
Jess was floored, "What?! YOU have a kid? How old is she? Why didn't you tell us?"
"I just found out a few days ago and I wanted to tell you in person. I just needed to process. No one else knows she's my kid. Except for Lorelai, Rory, your Mom and Miss Patty."
"Miss Patty kept a secret?"
"She will for people she cares about, and thankfully she cares about me and Lorelai."
"This place never ceases to amaze me," Jess marveled. "I really don't know what is more shocking, you having a kid you didn't know about or Miss Patty not spreading the gossip like wildfire."
"Yeah, well if we were quaint and boring you would never come back!"
Jess laughed, "There's always your apple pie, still can't find another one even close to being as good."
"Good to know between my coffee and pie I'll always have you and Lorelai around."
"Please don't tell me you are going to mention coffee in your vows."
Luke laughed through his nose, "We didn't write our own vows. Too cheesy for me!"
Jess nodded, "Good! I already have a hard time not rolling my eyes at weddings, this will make it easier."
"Careful! You're starting to sound like me," Luke smiled as he opened the door and motioned for Jess to come.
Lorelai, Rory, Sookie and Emily were in the cottage doing last minute makeup checks and touch ups.
"I just can't get the veil to look right!" Lorelai sighed. "Maybe you were right Mom, veils are stupid!"
"That's not what I said," Emily said in her matter of fact voice.
Rory's face lit up, "I have a great idea!" She rushed over to some of the tote bags on the loveseat, grabbed something and then stood behind Lorelai who was sitting at the desk in front of a mirror. "Okay, trust me. I think this can be awesome."
There was a small knock at the door. "Ladies?" Richard called. "It's time!"
Lorelai stood up and hugged Rory. "Thanks Kid, you saved the day."
Emily smiled, "You look wonderful."
Sookie was already tearing up, "Perfect!"
