Jess stood in front of a sea of faces. Only a few were friendly, most of them still saw him as a punk. But over the last few months he had been doing a lot of soul searching. He was planning on reaching out to Luke and Rory. He had written them each a letter, several drafts over the last few weeks, and he was ready to send them, then his Mom called and told him about the wedding. She had promised Luke she wouldn't because Luke felt that Jess hated Stars Hollow and was mad at him. As soon as he got off the phone with his mother, Jess packed his bags and got in the car, the only significant stop he made was in Woodbridge to rent a suit. He cleared his throat and started his toast.
"Here's a story I never imagined telling anyone. When I came into town for my Mom's wedding last year, Luke and I had a talk about love, feelings and relationships. It's true I swear," Jess paused as the crowd laughed. "He gave me this book and tape that he said he had just finished and suggested I give it a try. Now I'm still a bit cautious about my own love life, but after listening to what the guy said on the tape I know exactly why it was the same weekend Luke made his move to start dating Lorelai. Don't kill me Luke, but I'm going to tell them what it said."
Luke shook his head while wearing a large smile and motioned for Jess to carry on. Lorelai was grinning like a kid in a candy store, or like Lorelai in a candy store, she had never heard much about Luke's self help book and wanted to know everything.
Jess looked at his notes and continued, "The guy asked, 'Whose phone calls or visits are never unwanted or too long? Who would you most like to have in your life to ward off moments of loneliness? When you travel, who would make your travels more enjoyable? When you're in pain, who would you most like to comfort you? When something wonderful happens in your life, who do you want to share the news with?'. Now the guy on the tape would ask 'Do you see her face' after every one of those questions. It is no surprise to me that Luke heard this tape and then immediately went to ask Lorelai out. We all saw it before they did. I'm just so glad that the guy who took a chance on his punk nephew, who only wants to do right by everyone, finally put himself and his own happiness first. I think it's clear that with your solid foundation of friendship that the two of you are going to make it. And Lorelai, I know I wasn't really your favourite person in the past, but thanks for treating Luke the way he treats others. You are a great protector, defender, friend, and it's clear you are madly in love. If you guys ever have kids of your own, those will be some damn lucky kids."
Luke and Lorelai both blushed and smiled at each other. He winked at her in a nod to the secret they were keeping.
"Everyone please raise your glass to Luke and Lorelai, FINALLY!"
The crowd raised their glasses and in unison said, "Finally!" Then there was the clinking of glasses.
Rory stood and smiled, "Okay my turn. I promise to keep this short Mom, I know you're dying to cut the cake."
Everyone laughed as Lorelai admitted, "It's true!"
"My Mom has been my hero, my role model, my best friend and my everything. But you all know that since she made me repeat my valedictorian speech for you all after graduation. So I want to talk about Luke a little bit. You all know the history, you lived it with us. You know that every year on my birthday Luke bakes me something special. That he brought me milkshakes and mashed potatoes after I had my wisdom teeth out. That he let me take up three tables at the Diner so I could study and not be alone while Mom was at night school. He gave me driving lessons, he's done all he can to make sure our house was in the best shape possible. Basically, he's been my Dad. With all my reading and love of words, you can trust me when I tell you that Father and Dad are two very different things. While Luke may not be my biological or legal Father, no one else in my life has been more of a Dad than him. Now here's a secret that not even my Mom knows. I've wanted my Mom to marry Luke for years. I saw what you all saw between them, and I saw so much more being up close for their friendship. But the thing that only Luke and I know is that for the past five years HE is the one that I have given Father's Day presents to. Six years ago he found me in the gazebo crying because I tried to get together with my biological father on Father's Day. We had plans, so Mom made her own and I was alone waiting for him to come. He never showed up. Luke saw me, hugged me and spent the day with me. We went for lunch, we saw a movie and he made the day okay for me. Since then we always spend some of Father's Day together because if he is with my Mom or not, in my heart Luke has been my Dad for years now! So to my hero, my Mom, thank you for making my dreams come true. Thank you for officially making us the family we already were in my mind. Oh and sorry, this wasn't short at all."
She raised her glass, "To Luke and Lorelai, Stars Hollow's greatest love story!"
"Cheers" the crowd called.
Both Luke and Lorelai wiped their eyes before standing to hug Rory and Jess.
The rest of the evening went by in a blur. Miss Patty and Babette sang three songs to the happy couple, ("L-O-V-E" by Nat King Cole, "Islands in the Stream" and "Fever"). People danced, laughed and ate the night away. It was the party that wouldn't seem to end and even though the mood and style of the party was exactly how Luke wanted it to be, he was ready to say goodbye to everyone.
Everyone was outside now as the area in front of the Inn that was previously set up for the ceremony was now filled with tables and chairs and a few longer tables filled with various desserts.
Lane and Zack were now giggling and co-DJing from a spot on the porch, Sookie was running in and out of the Inn constantly bringing more food, Kirk was a surprisingly great photographer catching wonderful candid shots.
Luke was seated at a table off to the side near the stables. He enjoyed watching everyone interact and having a good time. He saw Liz and TJ dancing and was happy that he appeared to be wrong and that they looked like they were in this for the long haul. They seemed as in love today as they were at their wedding, Liz was still sober and TJ was bringing out the best in her. It was funny to see the elder Gilmores blending in with the Stars Hollow crowd. Richard was at a table talking to Taylor and they were both smiling and animated. Luke partially wished he could hear what they were talking about, but mostly he was glad that both of them were occupied.
As they had been most of the day (or ever since they had met), Luke's eyes found Lorelai. She was on the dance floor, her smile lit up her gorgeous face, she was dancing with Rory, April, Lane and Sookie. They were all laughing and singing along to the song, something about a lover getting with friends and then they yelled some nonsense words "ziga zig a". He smiled at how they seemed to have brought April into their little group so easily. It seemed like they had known each other for years and he loved Lorelai's ability to do that.
"Hey Luke, congratulations! It's a great wedding," Gypsy said as she offered him a beer.
"Thanks," he smiled and accepted the beer. "You know I had very little to do with planning the wedding. I just chose the perfect person to marry."
The friends shared a smile, "So is that April girl really your daughter?"
Luke scoffed and swallowed the beer, "Wow, jump right in."
"Come on, you know everyone is talking and wondering about it. I'm your friend."
Luke softened, Gypsy was a good friend of his. For some reason she was one of the only people in Stars Hollow that he not only trusted, but has sought out for advice and an ear at times. She was there for him when his Dad died. She was his go between with him and the rest of the town, finding the perfect balance of letting people visit him and giving him time alone to grieve. He will forever love her for how she helped him then. She also ran the Hardware Store until he decided to close it permanently.
"Okay, if I give you all the information can you make me a promise?"
"Of course!"
"I will tell you everything, keep it to yourself tonight, spread it like wildfire while we're on our honeymoon and hopefully they will be all gossiped out by the time we get home."
Gyspy laughed, "I mean sure, but I didn't know you were going on a year long honeymoon."
It was Luke's turn to laugh, "Right, I know they will always gossip, but at least if they have the few weeks we're away to start the gossiping, maybe they won't be so bad about it when we return."
"Luke, you know I will help you out. Tomorrow at the Diner I'll either make sure someone hears me talking to Caesar or I'll just talk to Patty myself."
"Thanks!"
"No problem. Just promise that if you need to talk about it -"
"You'll be the first one I'll call. I'll buy you a beer and some Rolos."
Gypsy laughed and touched her bottle to his, "Deal!"
After Luke gave her all the details, the friends fell into a comfortable silence watching the other party goers still dancing into the night.
