Luke pulled the car up to the and honked the horn. He had just come from the dealership, finally getting a newer version of his green truck (which was in the garage) one with a second row of seating and that includes the special hooks to attach a car seat to.

Lorelai bounded down the steps excitedly, "Yay, the new car!"

Luke smiled at his wife's excitement, "You want to drive it?"

"Na, it's your car, you drive. I'll just grab my purse and Rory and we'll head to Hartford."

"You think your Mom will stop making comments about my car now?" Luke smirked.

"Oh Hon, it's still a working person's car."

They laughed and shared a kiss. The front door of the house closed and Rory approached with Lorekai's purse and sweater.

"Let's go people, we're going to be late for dinner. Luke, I love the truck! This blue is amazing."

"Thanks Kid," he smiled as he helped Lorelai get into the front seat.

Luke, Lorelai, Rory, Emily and Richard were sitting around the living room. They were all settled with their drinks and had made some small talk when Emily turned to Lorelai, "So when is your next doctor's appointment?"

Lorelai smiled and pulled a small box from her purse, "We went today and I got this for you and Dad."

"Why did you get us a present for your doctor's appointment?"

"Just open it."

Richard leaned in as Emily untied the bow and lifted the lid off the small box. She slightly gasped at what she saw. There was a small picture frame holding an image printed from the ultrasound Lorelai had that day. The frame was light blue with the words "Grandma & Grandpa's Boy" with little teddy bears with blue bows.

"Oh my god," Emily sighed.

"What is that?" Richard asked.

Emily looked at Lorelai with tears in her eyes while answering Richard, "It's an image from an ultrasound. This is our first picture of our grandson."

Lorelai shared a smile with her Mom.

"A BOY!" Richard exclaimed.

"Yup," Luke smiled at him from ear to ear.

"Ha ha, a boy!" Richard laughed as he got out of his seat to shake Luke's hand. Luke rose from the couch and returned the shake.

"We need cigars!"

"Oh, thanks," Luke smiled, "But I don't smoke."

"And you're not smoking those horrible things in my house with my pregnant daughter here!" Emily informed him.

"More scotch?" Richard offered Luke as an alternative.

Luke nodded and they went to the drink cart to freshen up.

Emily shook her head at Richard's giddiness but her smile spoke volumes. She made eye contact with Lorelai and said, "Congratulations, Lorelai. I'm assuming the rest of the checkup went well?"

"Yup! The doctor said our boy is growing well, the heartbeat sounds perfect and we're still on schedule for a December baby."

"That's wonderful." Emily held Lorelai's gaze for a moment longer before looking back at the picture frame still resting on her lap.

"And what about you, Rory? What's new with you?"

"Well, I've started writing a book," Rory announced to the room.

Richard stopped his conversation with Luke and everyone except Lorelai looked shocked.

"A book? Really?" Emily asked

"Yeah, I've been spending some time with Jess this Summer. He works for a small publishing firm and is finishing up his own book. We've been talking about my future and what being a journalist really means to me. He felt it would help my future job opportunities if I was already published."

"What type of book are you working on?"

"Well, when Mom and I did our backpacking trip to Europe and when I went with Grandma I journaled a lot. About the sites and the culture, how the different travel styles felt and the different reactions I got from people depending on if I arrived in a limo or walked with my belongings on my back. It's not 100% flushed out yet but it's shaping up to be a collection of short stories. I'm really excited about it."

"And you have time for this with all your other Summer commitments?" Emily asked, obviously not happy to hear the name Jess. "What does Logan say about this new venture?"

"Oh yes, I have time. I've been working on the book most in the evening or at night, you know after work hours. And Logan is doing his own traveling this Summer, but when he checked in he seemed to like the idea."

Emily seemed to be satisfied with hearing she was in touch with Logan. "Wonderful, shall we go eat?"

"Yes! I'm starved," Lorelai exclaimed.

The night was one of the best ones Lorelai had there over the last few years, maybe ever. Her parents were animated and happy, Luke happily discussed with Richard how the house renovations were holding up and some more ideas he had for future changes. Rory was telling Emily and Lorelai more about her book idea and some of the articles she wrote this Summer. At the end of the evening, Emily walked them to the door where she grabbed Lorelai's arm and held her back.

"I just wanted to thank you for the lovely gift. It really means a lot. It wasn't long ago that you wouldn't have dreamed of sharing this with me … and well … I just wanted to know -"

"You're welcome, Mom," Lorelai whispered and hugged Emily.

Rory smiled at them fondly.

A few days later Luke was busy at the diner when he was surprised to find April at the counter.

"April! What are you doing here?"

"I snuck out of school, I needed to see you."

"What's up? Wait, did you say you snuck out of school?" Luke snapped.

"I had to! She's being impossible," April practically shrieked.

"Come, let's go upstairs." Luke placed his hand on April's back and guided her to the stairs.

Once they were behind the closed door of Luke's old apartment he took a deep breath and tried to remain calm, "Okay start talking, then I have to call your Mom and your school."

"Mom is trying to keep us apart," April blurted out.

"Us? Us who?"

"You and me!" April was getting riled up. "She was okay with the idea while you were on your honeymoon, especially when she started dating someone. But last week, when you gave me that little album of pictures from the wedding, she started."

"Started what?" Luke asked as he poured them both a glass of water.

"Started hinting that we won't be able to spend time together anymore. She made it seem like it would be your fault, that you would be too busy because you're a newlywed. She seemed a bit jealous so I didn't even tell her about the baby. But then when I finally told her she really started dropping comments like, you will be way too busy for me when your wife's baby arrives. She told me one time that she's sure Lorelai wouldn't want me around, but then I told her how great Lorelai was when we got together and now she thinks I love you guys more. I don't want her to feel bad, she's my Mom and of course I love her, but if she keeps acting like this I will for sure like you and Lorelai more than her."

"Okay, take a breath and have a drink of water," Luke said gently. "Your Mom has had you all to herself for your entire life, she just needs time to adjust. For whatever reason she assumed that I would not want to be a Dad so this all must be jarring for her. And now it's not just me she has to get used to you having a whole family here when you're with us."

"I know, she snapped at me last night, saying that I'll probably leave her to go live with my dream family."

Luke rubbed the back of his neck and sighed, "Okay, clearly I need to talk to your Mom and settle some things. Maybe once she sees that Lorelai and I aren't trying to replace her, she'll come around. I'll invite her to dinner."

"Do you think that will work?" April asked desperately

"It's worth a shot. Once she sees that Lorelai was a single Mom and gets what your Mom might be feeling, I'm sure she'll feel better about this. Now I gotta call your school and your Mom."

"She's going to flip!"

"Wow, that really was an eventful day," Lorelai smiled sympathetically after Luke told her about April's visit and his subsequent call with Anna.

They were just about to start eating dinner and Luke sighed, "I'm worried this is going to turn into a battle."

"Oh, Hon"

"You should have heard her, she was claiming that we just got married to look good to the courts. Then she accused me of being a gold digger and likely going to try to bury her with lawyers your parents will hire for me."

Lorelai laughed at that and Luke shot her a look.

"I'm sorry, I don't know what's funnier, the idea of you wanting to have anything to do with courts or that you would go to my parents for a lawyer."

Luke softly chuckled and nodded, "Yeah, I hate that she keeps talking about lawyers and court. I really thought we could have dealt with this on our own."

"Well we should look into some lawyers just in case. Anna robbed you and April of a relationship for eleven years, we can't let you guys lose anymore without a fight."

"You're amazing!"

"I know," she winked at him. "Now do I really have to eat all of these vegetables?"

"Yes!"

The phone rang and jolted Luke awake. He looked at the clock to find it was three-thirty in the morning. The phone rang again and Lorelai moaned. Luke grabbed the receiver and answered.

"Hello?"

"Is this Luke Danes?"

"Yeah," Luke tried to focus as he sat up.

"Mr. Danes, my name is Nancy, I'm a nurse at St. Francis Hospital."

Luke was suddenly wide awake and in a panic, though outwardly you wouldn't know. "Who's hurt? What's wrong?"

Hearing that caused Lorelai to sit up immediately and lean towards him to hear what was going on.

"There was a car accident with a minor involved. There is no father listed on her birth certificate but she gave us your information."

"APRIL? Is she okay?"

"She's okay, she's having some tests done right now."

"Where's Anna?" Luke was now moving around the room grabbing clothes and getting dressed.

"Mr. Danes I think it would be better if you came down to the hospital. Are you able to make it here?"

"I'll be there in twenty minutes!" He hung up the phone, finished getting dressed and found Lorelai ready to go.

"You shouldn't come. You're pregnant, I don't want you in the hospital with all the sick people and their germs."

"Luke, I love that you worry about me and our baby. But there is no way I am not coming with you. April is my Step-Daughter, you are my husband and I will be there for both of you."

Luke kissed her gently, "I love you. Let's go. Just try to hold your breath as much as possible."
