Lorelai felt like she was under water. She knew things were moving around her quickly, but it felt like it was all in slow motion. Doctors and nurses coming and going, checking her vitals, checking the monitors, and sticking their hand in her to see how much she's dilated. Luke would cringe and look away every time she was checked. Once the epidural kicked in Lorelai suddenly felt sleepy. She closed her eyes and tried to rest assuming she would soon be asked to push.
"Hey, are you okay?" Luke asked.
"Yeah," she mumbled
She felt someone tapping her arm trying to shake her.
"Lorelai. Are you with us?" The doctor asked.
"Yeah," she moaned angrily, "Can't I rest for a little bit?"
Luke left the room and the doctor told her she could rest.
Luke leaned against the wall and covered his face. Rory rounded the corner with some weather bottles.
"Hey. How's it going in there?" When she saw his face she panicked, "What's wrong?"
"It's okay now. We just had a scary moment there," Luke whispered
"What happened?"
"Your Mom got her epidural, then when she lay back down her heart rate immediately dropped and so did the baby's. Actually the baby's disappeared from the monitor. I thought I was going to lose them both. It was just for a second but it felt like forever."
"But they're okay now?"
"Yeah, as soon as we got your Mom talking both heartbeats came back to normal. Obviously though this is something they'll keep a close eye on. I just wish this part was over and I could tell everyone Mother and baby are doing fine."
"You will. You'll tell us that soon. Emily Gilmore is here, and nothing bad can happen to her family when Emily Gilmore is here to be on top of these people."
Luke laughed at Rory's attempt to calm him. "Thanks Kid, I'm going back in there. Can you give the others the update?"
"Sure, give Mom a kiss for me."
The two hugged and went their separate ways.
Hours later Luke quietly entered the waiting room that was almost completely full of his and Lorelai's family and friends. In the corner Miss Patty was knitting while chatting with Babette and Emily with Richard beside her falling asleep with a newspaper in his lap. Sitting across from them was Liz, Tj, Jess, April, Rory and Lane. Sookie was bustling around the room, offering people snacks that she made and not just the people within their group. Luke noticed that almost every person in the waiting room and at the nurses' desk had baked goods from Sookie.
"Hey, everyone," Luke greeted.
"Is he here?" Emily asked nervously.
Luke smiled bigger than most of the people in the room had ever seen him smile, "He's here! Six pounds, three ounces and 19 inches long. Mother and baby are doing fine, tired but good."
The room erupted into cheers and hugs. Jess hugged Luke and whispered in his ear, "Congratulations Daddy!"
Luke squeezed Jess a little tighter.
"When can we see them?" Rory asked.
"Well once I knew they were both okay, I came right out. The nurse had just taken him to clean him and confirm his measurements and obviously take care of Lorelai.
"I'm going to the nurses' station to confirm she is getting the deluxe recovery sweet that I upgraded her to," Emily said as she took off.
Richard smiled and shook his head at his wife. Then he reached out a hand to Luke, "Congratulations," he smiled, handing him a cigar.
"Thank you, Sir."
Lorelai was getting the most amazing treatment and pampering, the nurses helped clean her up in a private shower, one nurse actually helped dry her hair to look nice for her guests. She was then taken to her private suite where she changed into her cute pyjamas.
There was a soft knock on the door and Luke peeked his head in, "I've held them off as long as I can, please tell me you are ready for a visit."
Lorelai got comfortable in the bed, and lifted the baby from the bassinet, "Bring them in!"
Luke opened the door and the crowd filled the room. Rory immediately hugged her Mom and Sookie was on the other side of the bed peeking down at the little bundle in her best friend's arms.
"Well?" Emily started, "What's his name?"
"I'm feeling great, Mom. Thanks for asking," Lorelai teased.
"Lorelai! You're fine, you look wonderful for someone who just had a baby. Now can I please know the name of my grandson?"
Lorelai smiled and pulled the blanket down to show off more of her son's face, "Everyone, this is Joshua William Gilmore Danes"
Emily gasped and Richard wrapped his arm around her shoulder.
"Are you okay?" April asked Emily.
"Joshua was my father's name," Emily whispered with tears in her eyes.
"Do you want to hold him?" Lorelai asked.
Emily rushed to her daughter's side and happily took the baby from her daughter. Rory snapped some pictures, Joshua was passed around the room.
"Oh my gosh Big Brother," Liz cried as she took her turn holding Joshua, "He looks just like you!"
"Yeah," TJ added, "It looks like someone put Luke in the dryer for too long and shrunk him."
Jess and Luke shared a look and laughed, "Congrats, Daddy" Jess said as he gave Luke a hug.
The rest of the group took turns hugging Luke and Lorelai and left to go home and get sleep. The only ones left were Rory, April, Richard and Emily.
Emily was again holding Joshua with April and Rory by her side. Luke was sitting on the bed with Lorelai and Richard came to Lorelai's side.
"What you did, naming him for your mother, that was incredibly kind," he then turned his gaze to Luke, "Especially since she wasn't always your biggest fan."
"That's all behind us now," Luke smiled.
"I'm just really happy at where we are in our relationship," Lorelai smiled at her Dad. "This way, my daughter is named after your Mom and my son is named for her Dad, it just made sense. I know Mom loved her father so much. He sounded like a wonderful man."
"Oh he was. I know you don't remember him because he died when you were little, but he loved you so much. And you know he was Jewish?"
"No, I didn't." Lorelai said.
"Yes," Richard smiled, "That was part of Trix's issue with your mother. Anyway, that's why our dinners are on Friday nights, it was your mother's family tradition. And in the Jewish culture you should name your children after a beloved family member that has passed away to keep their memory alive. So it really is meaningful, what you've done."
"Wow," Luke smiled. "I had no idea this gesture would run so deep. And then there's the fact that he was born on our six month anniversary, it's all really special."
Rory broke off from her little group and approached her Mom, "I'm going to drive April home. We'll get some sleep and come back in the morning. I'll call before we come to see if you need us to bring anything."
"Okay Hon, thanks." Lorelai said as Rory hugged her.
"I'm going to walk the girls to the car, it's really late," Luke told Lorelai as he handed April her coat.
"Emily, I'll go with them and bring the car around to the front door so you don't have to walk in this cold," Richard smiled at his wife still holding their grandson. He softly touched the little boy's head before heading for the door. "Good night, Lorelai. I'll speak to you tomorrow."
"Good night, Daddy."
Emily, the last guest in the room, walked to Lorelai's bedside and handed her the baby. "Now you don't hesitate to call if you need anything or if the staff is not treating you well. You're father and I have donated a lot of money to this hospital plus I have been a part of many fundraising ventures for this ward specifically."
"I'm sure things will be fine. But thank you, Mom."
Emily softened and looked Lorelai in the eyes, "Thank you, Lorelai. I'm beyond touched by this." A few tears spilled down her cheeks.
"I love you, Mom."
The door opened and Luke came in, "Are you guys okay?"
The women smiled at each other and then they both looked at Luke.
"Everything is great," Lorelai answered.
Emily hugged Lorelai, then Luke before putting on her coat, "Make sure you two get sleep. And I want to revisit the nanny conversation, or at least a night nurse."
"Okay Mom, we'll talk about it."
"Good," Emily smiled.
