Rory was getting ready to start her last year of Yale. She and Jess had decided a year ago that they were better as friends/family members/collaborators and didn't want to ruin any of that with a romantic relationship. Once that was settled she let Logan know that if he was still interested in her that she did not want to be one of many. If they were going to do this, it had to be exclusive. From that point on Logan had been a changed man, he was loyal and mature about their relationship. She saw his serious side and how passionate he was about projects he was actually interested in as opposed to the ones his father wanted him to be interested in. He was indeed a brilliant writer and she felt that with his insights her writing was improving as well. Rory was shocked at how fast she fell for him and how she could see a future with him more and more every day.

She had moved back into the apartment with Paris and was now at the Yale Daily News to get out the first edition of the year when she sensed someone approaching her desk. She furiously typed the last few words of her thought before looking up. She was shocked to see Mitchum Huntzberger smirking at her.

"Rory Gilmore," he began, "we need to talk."

"We do?"

"Yes, let me take you to lunch."

Rory did not want to talk to him, she had managed to avoid him since his horrible performance review that almost derailed her future. She was a woman of many words in every other aspect of her life, but when Mitchum Huntzberger was near her she became a bumbling fool.

"I have work to do. I can't go to lunch now." She managed to get out with a confident tone.

"Do you want to talk right here?" He offered. "I need to speak with you. I can talk while you type if you want."

Of course the whole newsroom was watching their interaction while trying to look like they were not watching their interaction, Rory noticed everyone had gotten a lot quieter.

"Okay, let's go." She grabbed her purse and locked her computer.

Now Rory was seated at a restaurant across from Mitchum who was acting like a king, ordering for the table and joking with the waiter.

"So why are we here?" Rory asked.

"Cutting to the chase, I like it," Mitchum smiled smugly. "Are you sure you don't want to wait for your drink?"

"Just tell me already!"

"I want to offer you a job."

"You want to offer me a job?" She was clearly skeptical.

"Stuart Wultz at the Gazette has nothing but high praise for you. He said any paper would be lucky to have you and he thinks you have a bright future."

"But you don't. At least you didn't after I shadowed you."

"Listen Rory, I'm a businessman. I personally don't care if you are great at your job or not. I need something from you and I am willing to give you something in return."

Rory felt her whole body go cold, she knew no good could come from Mitchum needing something from her.

The smugness on Mitchum's face amplified when he saw how uncomfortable Rory looked. "Calm down, it's nothing illegal or immoral. I need your help with Logan."

"Okay?"

"You've gotten closer to him than any other girl he's known. I think by now you know the real Logan and his true potential."

Rory softened slightly, "He is going to do great things. Once he finds his true passion and builds on it there's no stopping him," she smiled.

"I couldn't agree more. But I need your help in getting him settled on his passion. I have a company in London that would be perfect for him."

"London?!"

"One of our newspapers there is transitioning to online, it's an exciting time and I think he would be challenged and perfect for this. He's young to know the computer stuff and how to make it look appealing to our younger demographic. He knows the newspaper world and is an excellent writer so he's perfect for that aspect. It's an incredible opportunity for him."

"Wow," Rory was in shock. The job did sound like a great opportunity. In fact she was almost jealous. But the idea of Logan moving to London gave her a stomachache, she'd never felt this way before. She tried to push her emotions down, "So where do I fit in? What do you want from me?"

"I need you to convince him that this is what he should do. You can recognize that this is an amazing job for him with a potential future like no other. If this London paper goes well it is just a matter of time before all the other papers will make the move to online. He could be the go-to guy for this."

"I can't, I mean," she huffed as she tried to compose herself, "Logan is his own person. It sounds like a great job. Why can't you just offer it to him and trust that he'll see the potential?"

Mitchum cocked his head and glared, "Look, I know enough about your family situation,"

"What does that mean?" Rory interrupted angrily.

"I'm sure your grandparents offered your mother something, some help or some advice, that she would have appreciated from someone else, but because it was from her parents she automatically rejected it. Am I right?"

Rory's mind flashed to the time their house had termites and refused financial help from Emily, there were also numerous other times that Mitchum's theory proved correct. "I guess so, but -"

"I'm not a monster Rory. I know you might think so from our past, but I was really trying to motivate you. I knew you had potential, but you also were surrounded by people who kept telling you that you were perfect. You needed the experience of someone not loving everything you do. It seemed that people only spoke of your positive attributes. You could be a good journalist, your writing is good, sometimes great, but you need to be more pushy, more aggressive if you are really going to make it."

"I really don't want to talk about this with you!"

"My point is I wasn't trying to hurt you, I was trying to motivate you. And from what I hear you are doing a phenomenal job at the Daily News, you are working on putting out your own book and your grades are top notch."

"You don't get to take credit for that!"

"Okay, okay, back to the reason for this lunch. If you talked to Logan about this job it would make a difference. He respects your opinion. And I think he might love you. If he knew you were okay with him leaving it could make the choice easier. I want him to be excited about this, not do it out of obligation."

Rory sat back and crossed her arms over her chest, "Let's say I go along with this, what benefit do I get? I'll be sending the man I love thousands of miles away."

"The minute you graduate, or any time after if you are choosing to travel or something, you can have your pick of our papers. You can work with Logan or you can strike out on your own. And I'm not talking about a mailroom job here, I'm talking feature writer, staff writer, researcher wherever we think is a good place for you to start, and let me tell you that the people you will be working for will know that you are a friend of mine and they will want to keep you happy."

Rory was stunned, she knew she wasn't hiding it well. She wished she had a smart or witty response to this. Something about being suited as an assistant or about having the it factor.

In her silence, Mitchum continued, "I'm sure you can recognize that the job I'm offering Logan is exceptional, you could always help him with that. And if that goes well, in a year or so the two of you could move back here to start getting our other papers online."

Rory loved the idea, she just hated that it was coming from Mitchum.

"You think about it, okay? I have a meeting I need to get to, but I'll be in touch." With that he stood, dropped a wad of cash on the table to cover the bill and took off.

Rory pulled out her phone and immediately texted Logan.

Rory: We need to talk ASAP

Logan: I'm at my place, do you want to come by?

Rory: I'll be there in twenty minutes.

An hour later Rory and Logan were sitting on the couch in his lavish apartment. Both looking into the fire thoughtfully.

"Wow," Logan sighed.

"Yeah," Rory agreed.

"I mean the job sounds great. It sounds like one of those jobs that if someone else offered it to me I would have jumped at it."

"I know."

"It's in the tech world that I'm really into plus the news world which I already know pretty well. It's starting a whole new trend. The more I think about it the more I like it."

"Yeah?"

"Yeah. Well not the London part that takes me thousands of miles away from you. But then my Dad said there's a job in it for you too, right?"

Rory exhaled, "I don't know if I can take a job from him."

"Ace, I know you are morally against the rich helping their friends, but sometimes you just need to get your foot in the door. Just because my Dad gives you a job doesn't mean you can't carve out your own path. You can still make your own name."

"I guess."

"I think I'm going to take this job from my Dad. The funny thing is, I probably would have done it if he came to me himself."

"That's great! I think you'll be amazing at this."

"Thanks Ace, just promise me you won't say no just because it's my Dad."

"I promise to give this the full Pro Con List treatment!"
Logan kissed her and went to call his Dad.
