Lily woke up refreshed the next morning. No nightmares, no crazy theories keeping her up all night, and no muscle aches. After stretching, Lily got ready for her day. It was pouring buckets of rain outside. This wasn't abnormal for Forks, just unpleasant for someone who hates driving. Deciding on wearing something comfortable and warm rather than fashionable, Lily made her way downstairs. Sarah was attempting to make waffles this weekend.

The slightly burnt smell coming from the kitchen was an indicator that it was not going as well as Sarah would have liked. However, the alarm wasn't screaming yet so that was a positive sign in her books. Lily sat down quickly at the table after pouring some juice for both of them. They picked at the slightly burnt yet slightly raw waffles in a comfortable silence. They made small talk about a while about the date Sarah and John had the night previously. They had gone to some Italian place where the waitress wouldn't stop hitting on John in front of her. She had apparently had a possessive streak that emerged at that moment, moving to sit on john's lap towards the end of the meal. She laughed and said she felt like a teenager doing it, but that she regretted nothing.

At that point, Lily decided to bring up step one in her experiment. "Hey Sarah, do you know if they need any volunteers at the hospital? I wanted to do more for my college entrances and I like helping people. Do you think you could maybe help me set something up?" She had decided to be as honest as she could about volunteering. She enjoyed the community garden, but she did need something to round out her applications. It was killing two birds with one stone.

Sarah seemed to think about how to answer before swallowing her breakfast. "Well, I know that they always like volunteers to help read to the children admitted to the hospital. They also could really use clothing that were crochet for the babies in the NICU. We don't have any pets and we don't smoke in this house, so you shouldn't have any issues getting them accepted if you decide to go that path too. I have to go in today anyways, why not come into work with me?" Sarah announced excitedly. She always seemed to enjoy bringing Lily with her to work. She just hated seeing her admitted into the hospital.

Lily was thrilled! She quickly agreed, and began cleaning up the breakfast mess. Not too long afterwards they were on their way to the Hospital. Lily always felt at ease in hospitals, she was there often enough lately it seemed. The staff greeted her, said hello to Sarah, and were off to do their own jobs. Lily was introduced to Sandy, the charge nurse for the day on the pediatrics inpatient ward. She seemed thrilled to have someone come and spend time with the kids, especially someone not too much older than some of the ones admitted.

Lily was quickly given some documents she and Sarah needed to read through and sign. It was all pretty straightforward. Once the legal aspects were completed, Sandy gave Lily a tour of the ward. She also got her registered for basic life support courses just in case. After what happened to Emily, this seemed like an excellent idea to Lily. Once she was deemed competent enough to volunteer without causing trouble, she was let on her own. Lily decided to start things slowly and joined some of the younger children who were doing crafts at a table.

They appeared to between the ages of 4 and 7, but the age differences didn't seem to be too big of an issue. They all appeared to get along. They were each painting something different. Lily asked if it was ok if she started painting with them, and they seemed perfectly happy to include someone else. They took turns asking her questions like why was she here, was she sick too? Where were her parents? Things along those lines. Lily was honest and said that while she wasn't sick, she had heard there were kids here who were and that they could use some company. She glossed over the parent's question, but otherwise it went unnoticed by the children. After a while, Lily began to help them clean up their paintings and moved to spend time with the children who couldn't leave their rooms.

These kids seemed much sicker. They had machines attached to them, were pale, and some of them were bald. Lily had no idea there were this many sick children in the Forks Hospital. She always thought they would be transferred somewhere with a bigger facility. She really connected to one kid named James.

James Woodruff was a rambunctious 4-year-old who melted all the nurse's hearts. He was small for his age, and currently fighting for his life with Leukemia. He had lost his hair during his fight, but didn't seem to be bothered by it. If anything, he kept trying to convince his nurses to let him off the machines so he could play with everyone else. Lily went to sit by his bed and asked him what he wanted to do while he finished his latest treatment.

Meeting Lily and making a new friend made James' day! He quickly asked if she could grab some of the coloring books and crayons from the shelf, but to make sure she grabbed the ones up higher. They were in better condition and didn't have as many pictures already filled in. Lily quickly complied with his little demands, and they got to work coloring together. She really adored this little boy. He just seemed so full of life and energy. He had a wholesome feel to him that just drew people in. By the end of his treatment Lily was calling him Jamie, and only Lily would be allowed to call him that. Sandy was absolutely positive James had a crush on his new friend, but it was hard to deny him anything with his big baby blue eye.

Throughout the day Lily tried to get her powers to work. Or rather her talents. Nothing seemed to be triggering it though. Maybe she wasn't focusing enough? If anything, her hands were freezing because of how cold the Hospital was kept. She spent her entire day there. It wasn't until Sarah came to pick her up that Lil realized she hadn't stopped sense she had arrived. It had been over 12 hours with these kids, playing with them, reading, holding their little hands, and there was nothing she could do to make them better. Nothing happened. They were all still so incredibly sick and she couldn't change that.

Who was she kidding? She wasn't some superhero. She couldn't just come swooping in thinking she had some amazing gift of healing. These kids didn't need her to take away their illnesses. The doctors, nurses, and medicine they were on were already working on that. But, they could use a friend. She didn't need to be a super hero to help them. By showing up, being there for them, and spending her time there meant more to those children than any supposed healing power. Lily was content with that.

Sarah asked how her day was with the children, but could tell Lily was deep in thought. By the time they had gotten home John had already made them dinner. Lily had skipped lunch while at the hospital and was starving. It was a quiet meal, but not uncomfortable. John talked about the game he watched with Billy, Harry, and Charlie. Apparently, Charlie was thrilled with Bella hanging out with Billy's son. They had all been so worried about her for the last few months, but nobody knew how to help her. If hanging out with Jacob helped, Charlie was all for it. Lily didn't pay much attention to the gossip, having just realized how tired she was. After excusing herself from the table, she went up to shower and wind down for the evening.

She saw she had a missed call from Leah. After changing into clean pajamas, she texted her back.

Lily- "Hey, sorry I was helping Sarah at the hospital all day. What's up?"

Leah- "Its fine, Seth was just driving me up the wall. How did the experiment go? Anything happen?"

Lily- "nope. Nothing. I am not wonder woman. Hey, do you want to come with me next weekend?"

Leah- "Wait, you're going back? I thought it didn't work"

Lily- "It didn't work, but I still plan on going back. Also, do you know how to crochet?"

Leah- "did you get your brain operated on?"

Lily- "Oh haha, very funny. I'll talk to you more tomorrow. I'm tired. Night"

After putting her phone down on the nightstand, Lily thought back about what went on today. She grabbed her journal to document everything. Being surrounded by sick people was not enough to trigger her talent. Neither was touching the patient either on their hand or where they were sick at. Concentrating on trying to heal them only gave her a massive headache. No burning occurred at any point in time. She tried to wrack her brain for anything else she could write down.

Now for the hard part; what should she do next as an experiment. Maybe starting on sick children was too ambitious. Maybe she should start smaller? Illnesses like Cancer seemed a bit of a large step to jump to when she thought about it. Smaller might be better.

Now, should she try to help local animals first or forgo all of that and stick to plants? She wasn't sure. At this point, she figured it was easier to do an experiment with plants than on anything like a living being. Besides, she had a green thumb. That had to mean something?

Next experiment. Set up a growth, healing, and death plant experiment. Find a local animal shelter to see if they need volunteers. On a side note, learn how to crochet.
