*Authors note. Hello everyone! I hope you are all still here after the last chapter. I apologize if it was too much for anyone. The next chapter or two as I stated previously will take place from Bella's point of view. All recognizable content in this story belongs to Stephanie Mayer. I will quote the chapter's used at the bottom of each post. Please let me know what you think! *
I knew my way to the lane that passed closest to the cliffs, but I had to hunt for the little path that would take me out to the ledge. As I followed it, I looked for turns or forks, knowing that jake had planned to take me off the lower outcropping rather than the top, but the path wound in a thin single line toward the brink with no options. I didn't have time to find another way down – the storm was moving in quickly now. The wind was finally beginning to touch me, the clouds pressing closer to the ground. Just as I reached the place where the dirt path fanned out into the stone precipice, the first drops broke through and splattered on my face.
It was not hard to convince myself that I didn't have time to search for another way- I waned to jump from the top. This was the image that had lingered in my head. I wanted the long fall that would feel like flying.
I knew that this was the stupidest, most reckless thing I had done yet. The thought made me smile. The pain was already easing, as if my body knew that Edward's voice was just seconds away…
The ocean sounded very far away, somehow farther than before, when I was on the path in the trees. I grimaced when I thought of the probable temperature of the water. But I wasn't going to let that stop me.
The wind blew stronger now, whipping the rain into eddies around me.
I stepped out to the edge, keeping my eyes on the empty space in front of me. My toes felt ahead blindly, caressing the edge of the rocks when they encountered it. I drew in a deep breath and held it… waiting.
"Bella"
I smiled and exhaled.
Yes? I didn't answer out loud, for fear that the sound of my voice would shatter the beautiful illusion. He sounded so real, so close. It was only when he was disapproving like this that I would hear the true memory of his voice- the velvet texture and the musical intonation that made up the most perfect of all voices.
"Don't do this," he pleaded.
You wanted me to be human, I reminded him. Well, watch me.
"Please. For me."
But you won't stay with me any other way.
"Please." It was just a whisper in the blowing rain that tossed my hair and drenched my clothes- making me as wet as if this where my second jump of the day.
I rolled up onto the balls of my feet.
"No, Bella!" He was angry now, and the anger was so lovely.
I smiled and raised my arms straight out, as if I were going to dive, lifting my face into the rain. But it was too ingrained from years of swimming at the public pool- feet first, first time. I leaned forward, crouching to get more spring…
And I flung myself off the cliff.
I screamed as I Dropped through the open air like a meteor, but it was a scream of exhilaration and not fear. The wind resisted, trying vainly to fight the unconquerable gravity, pushing against me and twirling me in spirals like a rocket crashing to Earth.
I was proud of myself as I plunged deeper into the freezing black water. I hadn't had one moment of terror- just pure adrenaline. Really, the fall wasn't scary at all. Where was the challenge.
That was when the current caught me…
Goodbye, I love you, was my last thought.
At that moment, my head broke the surface.
How disorienting. Id been sure I was sinking.
"Bella?" Jacob asked, his voice tense and wild with worry. "Bells, honey, can you hear me?"
"How long has she been unconscious?" someone else asked.
"I don't know," Jacob reported, still frantic. His voice seemed very close. Hands- so warm they had to be his- brushed wet hair from my cheeks. "A few minutes? It didn't take long to tow her to the beach."
The people surrounding me continued to bicker back and forth about whether or not they should move me. They all agreed that at least I was breathing. They eventually wanted me to go to the hospital as I was turning colors.
"Jake?" I croaked.
He quickly picked me up after insuring I was not hurt anywhere else. My throat burned from screaming, but nothing else seemed hurt. He told Sam to return to the hospital, and that he had it from here.
Eventually I asked Jacob what had happened. "Did you… find her?"
Jacob shook his head. He was still more running than walking as we headed toward his house. "No, she took off into the water. The bloodsuckers have the advantage there. That's why I raced home- I was afraid she was going to double back swimming. You spend so much time on the beach…." He trailed off, a catch in his throat.
"Sam came back with you… is everyone else home, too? I hoped they weren't still searching for her.
"Yeah, sort of."
I wasn't able to read his expression when he said that. His eyes were right with worry or pain, I wasn't sure which. Then, what he had said earlier hit me.
"You said… hospital. Before, to Sam. Is someone h-hurt? Did she fight you?" My voice jumped up an octave, sounding strange with the hoarseness.
"No. When we got back, Em was waiting with the news. It Harry Clearwater. Harry had a heart attack this morning."
"Harry? Oh, no! does Charlie know? Is he going to be ok?"
Jacob's eyes tightened again. "It doesn't look so great right now."
Hours later Billy had returned home with the news. Harry hadn't made it. Charlie was still at the hospital with Sue getting everything… arranged.
Jacob eventually brought me home in my truck. He had shared a moment together, something that had meant…everything to me. He was my sun. my warmth. My life. He wanted me to be happy, that was all. No pressure. Just happy.
It wasn't until we had pulled up to the house that he slammed the door and twisted the keys in the ignition. His hands were shaking so hard I didn't know how he managed it.
"What's wrong?"
"Vampire"
It wasn't until I looked across the front line of the forest to where a car was parked across the street. It was a black car- a car I knew.
It was Carlisle's car.
"Stop!" I cried. "Its not Victoria. Stop, stop! I want to go back!"
"What?"
"It's Carlisle's car! It's the Cullens. I know it!
We ended up having an argument. It wasn't supposed to be like this. It wasn't a war. It was just the Cullens returning hopefully. He didn't need to… to run off. To leave me alone too. Just like He had.
*This all takes place during New Moon, Chapters 15 and 16. I will be trying to paraphrase what happens to get our girl Lily back home. A lot happened in Forks while she was gone that needs to be addressed for everything to line back up. *
