It was not raining when the family returned to Forks. The trip back had been rather easy, when compared to the last few flights Lily had taken recently. There was no foreboding feeling of doom hanging over her head of having a court trial, because it had been completed. She was no longer required to attend the follow up proceedings.
She was flying to her home with people who loved her. She was no longer flying to an unknown family that may or may not hurt her. Her family was here, with her. As a matter of fact, one of her family members were currently drooling onto her hair.
Sarah had taken a picture of John passed out, sprawled across the middle seat of the plane, face drooling right into lily's poor curls. She hoped the blackmail was worth it. She planned to beg Sarah for a copy of the picture to save for the next time John tried to pull a prank on her.
He still hadn't forgiven her for her previous prank.
It all seemed so far away now, as if it were in another life time instead of only a few weeks ago.
She couldn't wait to be home.
Leah hadn't been answering her phone, but Lily understood. Perhaps better than most what it was like losing a family member. Leah hadn't given too many details about what had happened, only that her father had a heart attack and was subsequently rushed to the hospital. However, he didn't make it. His health had been declining recently. His doctors had warned him of his heart issues, but death doesn't care if the one he takes was warned or not.
Death comes for everyone in the end.
She was planning on visiting as soon as they landed after she showered. She needed to be there for Leah and Seth like Leah had been for her. That's what friends are for, especially best friends.
Lily hadn't anticipated making so many close friends when moving to the other side of the country. Leah had become her best friend and sister, Emily was like an older sister to the both of them, Seth the younger annoying brother who had the entire world just waiting for him. The rest of the reservation had become like cousins. People she could count on to be there if she needed them.
It had given her hope for the future that she hadn't felt in a very long time, if ever.
After the drive back to the house, Lily jumped straight into the shower. She had messaged Leah letting her know she would be there in less than an hour. But once Lily had arrived to Leah's house, nobody answered the door. She tried to go to Emily's next.
Emily had been spending more time with Lily after the pigeon incident. She had helped her come up with calming techniques to help either prevent or work through whenever she triggered a transformation. It seemed to happen more and more frequently after the incident in Emily's house. Lily had also taken up yoga from YouTube videos, but she wasn't so sure it helped. She wasn't that great at yoga, but with all things she kept at it.
Emily wasn't answering her phone either, but Lily saw that there where cars in the driveway when she got to the house. She half expected Bella's truck to be there but was surprised to see it missing. That was a good sign hopefully. She knocked on the door shortly after parking, but was surprised to find Seth opening the door instead of Emily or Sam.
"Hey Seth, I am so sorry to have been so far away when everything happened." And with that she hugged Seth. She had noticed he had shot up several inches while she was gone, cut his hair, and seemed to be running a bit warmer than normal, but none of that mattered. He had been hurting and she wanted to let him know she was there for him. He had seemed shocked at first, but wrapped his arms around her without a second thought.
Someone had come up from behind them, causing Lily to loosen her grip on Seth. It ended up being Sam, who looked both shocked and worried to see her. He stepped around Seth, putting himself between the two of them.
"Hello Sam, I'm so sorry to hear what had happened. Are Leah and Emily here? I want to give them my condolences and let them know I'm here for them." Lily was on edge. She always seemed to be on edge around Sam. It didn't feel as danger triggering as it had been in the past, but something about him keeps her on edge. From the way he was positioning his body, she felt like he was trying to protect her rather than protect his family this time around.
"Hello Lily. Welcome back to Forks. Yeah, they're both here, but I don't know if now is the best time to visit. The family is grieving together right now." Sam seemed cagey as always, but she honestly hadn't expected anything different. Then, a shout from inside the door followed by several crashing things resulted in Leah rushing out the door-
Straight into Lily's arms. Leah had also somehow grown several inches, which started to worry Lily. A 14-year-old boy growing overnight? No problem. A 19-year-old girl who should have finished growing magically sprouting several inches? Much more alarming.
Either way, Lily hugged Leah just as tightly as she could. Maybe Leah was coming down with whatever Seth was? Leah wasn't the touchy feely type of person, but when she needed a hug, she turned to Lily for it. Lily would try her hardest to be there for Leah whenever she could.
"thank god you're back. I can't deal with this shit on my own. I can't be strong enough for Seth, not when its all my fucking fault."
"Leah, what are you talking about? Nothing is your fault you dumb ass, you know that. Talk to me. Sam, I'm kidnapping Leah. Seth you want to come? No? Ok, well the offer still stands. Sarah has a lot of food she's having John make for you guys so come by whenever you want." And with that Lily swept Leah up into her car and drove off. She refused to let Sam try any of the bullshit he looked ready to try and sell her.
It wasn't until Lily had gotten several miles away from Emily's house that Leah began talking.
"I have to tell you something. I don't know how to tell you, but I know I need to. Sam doesn't agree. He thinks it should be kept quiet, but I can't. I can't keep quiet like he wants me to. I never have. But I am stuck between hell and purgatory and I don't know what to do."
"Leah, you can tell me anything and everything. Sam does not, nor has he ever, controlled you. As a matter of fact, nobody can control who or how you feel. Don't give someone else that power over you." Lily paused at that.
"Take it from me. It is a lot harder to take the power back over yourself than it is to never have allowed them to have it in the first place. You are a strong, vivacious woman. Whatever is going on, not only can you talk about it but you will overcome it."
"Lily, you know how you turn into a giant pigeon?" Leah whispered quietly, as if she were afraid to bring it up.
"that's not exactly how I would describe it. I almost prefer Tinkerbelle at this point, but yes, go on"
"Fine, when you turn into this stupidly pretty angel of vengeance. You get these beautiful wings, awesome fangs, and if you wanted to you could slash a mother fucker with your claws. You know what I turn into? This stupid wolf! I shouldn't have even been able to turn into this! I 'm some freak of nature! I can't even feel this way, because we still haven't figured out what's going on with you! But I turn into this giant freaking wolf, which would be cool if it was just me. But no, I have to share a mind with literally everyone else including Sam! I have to see all his thoughts about Emily! You know what the worst part is? Listening to his thoughts about me! How awful he feels. How he loves me still, but Emily is his everything. Then, I have to hear everyone else's thoughts, including my own brother's! I have only ever been safe within my own mind, and now I don't even have that." With that, Leah started shaking and crying her eyes out.
"Pull over! Pull over! I can't hurt you too!"
Lily quickly pulled to the side of the road, flipping her hazard lights on. Leah bolted from the car, barely unbuckling her seatbelt in time before throwing herself on the ground. She couldn't seem to stop shaking.
"I killed my own father Lily! We had been arguing about everything it seemed. He just wouldn't stop. You know me, I'm my fathers' daughter through and through. Seth was shouting trying to get us to calm down but neither of us could. I turned right in front of him. He was so shocked it caused his heart attack. Remember how I said it was a boy's club legend? No daughter of the tribe has ever gone through the change. Only the sons. Me triggering caused Seth to trigger. I caused all of this!"
"Leah, I get turning into a weird ass thing unexpectedly. But you. Didn't. kill. Your. Father. He had heart issues for years! The stress had been getting to him, you know that! Your own mother had been trying to stop him from even sitting on the council. You didn't kill him Leah! He loves you! Seth and Sue love you! Your brother loved you so much he was resolute in staying by your side, like the two of you always have. That's why he changed too. Seth loves you Leah, we all do." Lily was trying her hardest to get Leah to see she was innocent in everything.
"Lily, the stupid tribal stories are true. They're all true. Vampires are coming after everyone, triggering everything. It's all fucking Bella Swan's fault.
"Bella, why is it Bella's fault?" Lily asked. She had that sinking feeling in her stomach again. How the Hell had Bella played into everything?
"Bella fucking Swan was messing with the Cullens. Apparently, another vampire fucking went after her and shit. Then, they killed the guy making his mate mad. You don't kill a mated pair without killing both of them. What idiot doesn't kill the other half of a couple? She knew they where vampires too, but it didn't matter to her. So after they left her behind because surprise surprise a vampire and a human have fucking issues being together, the female of the pair comes to hunt Bella down. But. She keeps coming across our boundary line. So more and more of us are triggered to change to protect the tribe. But we have to protect Bella, even if she brought this shit on herself. Jacob won't let us stop protecting her. She is using him, and like the stupid kid he is he played right into her hands! Bella has caused so many issues that now I have fucking changed when I never should have! It's all her fault!"
"Leah, I agree with you. But Bella is alone now. She's with Jacob, isn't she? She can't take back her past actions oh don't fucking growl at me Leah. She can't take them back. But, isn't she trying to move past them, isn't she?"
"That's just it Lily. You are so god damn kind and naïve, right to your bones. One of the blood suckers came back. She can see the future apparently, but for some reason she couldn't see everything. Bella went cliff diving alone. She came to see if Bella was ok, but told her family Bella had killed herself. Somehow that got back to Edward, and he went to off himself. Bella left everything to save him. But then she took him back. She begged him to take her back. Its like they never even left. But the whole tribe has been affected because she couldn't keep it in her god damn pants for someone who's dead. Who never gave a flying fuck about her. That, Lily, is why I'm mad. My family has been destroyed because of her. Jacob is devastated. How the fuck are we supposed to just be ok?
"Leah, deep breaths. What can I do? How can I make this right? Or better?"
"I just want to fucking cunt punch her. I am so sick of her. Of everything. Of Sam. Of fucking all of this.!" with that, Leah transformed into the most beautiful wolf Lily had ever seen. She was smaller than Sam had been. She was gray and nimble. She was beautiful and strong, exactly as Leah had always been. She bounded into the woods, leaving me alone. The car's hazard lights still flashing and open-door bell chiming.
Bella is back? Does she even know everything she had caused? Fine. Lily was going to confront Bella about this. She checked her wrist, and saw it wasn't too late in the evening. She texted Sarah for the Cullen's address. If they were back in town, they must be staying at the house they had owned before they moved.
Sarah had texted back with the directions, asking if Lily was ok. Lily quickly messaged her back saying she was fine but had heard that they had moved back into town. Bella was supposedly over there so she was gonna check.
Lily got back into her car, screamed into the steering wheel, and began driving towards a house potentially full of vampires.
Well, if Bella could handle them Lily was sure she could. Lily could at least walk a straight line without tripping.
It took nearly an hour before she found the long winding driveway. It had seemed slightly overgrown, but at the end of the several mile long driveway a beautiful glass house came into view. Several cars were parked outside, including the familiar red truck. Good, Bella was here.
Lily pulled her car next to some fancy looking sports car. She didn't care for it. It screamed middle life crisis. What constitutes a midlife crisis to a vampire? She shook her head to clear her mind of erroneous thoughts.
She put her car in park, pulled the key from the ignition, and made her way to the front door trying to keep her heart as calm as possible. Maybe if she didn't act like she knew they were blood sucking vampires she would just be able to slip in, give Bella a piece of her mind, and slip out.
A beautiful looking woman with honey-colored eyes opened the door.
"Hello dear, can I help you? Her voice sounded like bells and charm. She even smelled sweet.
"Hello, My name is Lily. I need to speak with Bella Swan. I know she is here, and I apologize for intruding. But this is important. Please, can I speak with her?" Lily tried to sound brave, but she probably resembled a mouse.
"Well, alright dear. But this isn't the best time. She is just through here. Bella love, you have a visitor?" Even the kind woman seemed confused.
Bella had been sitting on a couch in a beautifully decorated if slightly sparce living room. She was wrapped around whom Lily could only assume was Edward. He had the same honey-colored eyes that the woman who had welcomed Lily into the house seemed to have. At least Lily could confirm two of the family members drank from animals still. She wasn't sure how quickly their eyes changed to red though.
Edward looked constipated. Maybe there wasn't enough fiber in his diet. Lily laughed silently at that, while Bella looked confused.
"Lily, what are you doing here?"
At that, Lily saw red. Her friend's life had changed horrendously quicky. Her entire family had been destroyed. The entire tribe had been affected by the actions of this one insignificant slip of a girl.
She wasn't even sad.
Or sorry.
Or upset.
She looked happy, in love, as if her world had just been returned to her.
Oh fuck no.
Lily just stared at Bella while her thoughts raced through her mind.
Lily snapped.
Bella went flying across the couch from the backhand Lily gave her across her cheek. Edward jumped up in her defense, shocked that he hadn't been able to tell what was going to happen. Several other Vampires somehow appeared within the room, but Lily hadn't noticed.
She had been thrown across the room and through one of the glass windows.
Everything was silent for what felt like both a second and forever.
Bella started to cry, shouting at Lily. For Edward.
The surrounding vampires had also started shouting, some holding others back.
But Lily? She moved from the wrecked window. She had blood dripping down her body from the cuts. But they were quickly closing up. She didn't care about the pain. She didn't care about the blood. She had one goal, and it was to know what the fuck Bella was playing at.
"Don't fucking hiss at me asshole! My fangs are bigger and much prettier than yours!" and with that, lily hissed back at Edward. It felt very reminiscent of growling at Sam when he had transformed.
"What the fuck is wrong with you Bella? You just couldn't be happy with the life you had? Or are you so greedy and self-absorbed that you wanted it all? Jacob? That boy you were leading on? He's barely 16. How long have you been using him? At least the past few years if my calculations are correct. You're fucking 18 years old! You have no idea what you've done, do you? The entire tribe has transformed or been affected by the transformation of their children because you and your lover boy couldn't remember to kill the other vampire's mate! A man is dead, and his life is on your hands. You used Jacob and broke his heart. He is still a child Bella!
"You ran away to fucking Italy on the day of the funeral of your father's best friend. Did you leave him a note? Oh no. He just came home to a fucking empty house, his daughter missing, and had to deal with it. The last fucking thing he needed was his goddamned daughter running away from him AGAIN!
"And you! You left her. It was for her own good right? Isn't that why you packed your family up? That's right, it wasn't that big of a secret. But you couldn't leave well enough alone. Either shit or get off the pot Eddy boy! This is as much your fault as it is hers! How dare you both force your family, and several others to suffer because of your own selfish actions. News flash! Romeo and Juliet? They aren't a tale of romance. It is a tale of death and betrayal. How fucking dare you." By the end of Lily's impassioned rant, she had been speaking barely above a whisper.
"Not only are you both selfish beyond compare, but incredibly stupid. What if I had died in that glass? That's right, throwing a human girl across the room into a window doesn't end well. But then again, it isn't the first time your family has dealt with that, is it Edward? How many bodies do you have lined up? Bella is just the next poor girl in a long line of girls I bet, and the Chief of Police's daughter at that. Both your families deserve better than the two of you. Look at their faces! They know it! Look how horrified your parents are Edward!"
Lily turned toward whom she assumed were Carlisle and Esme.
"I apologize for barging into your house and playing a part in this drama. I'll be leaving now. Please send Sarah from the hospital the bill for the window. She will make sure it gets taken care of. Oh, and Bella? Try not to end up someone's lunch. Charlie doesn't deserve to bury another person he loved." And with that, Lily walked out of the broken house surrounded in silence. The only sound to be heard were the crunching of glass under her sneakers.
