Lily spent the rest of her night in her room. First, she sulked. It was not every day that a teenage girl finds out that she is a monster.

Then, she got angry. How did this happen? What the hell had her parents been up to that they could produce a monster.

Bargaining came next. Lily was not one for religion. After all, the higher beings of various religions never answered her when she begged in the past for help or warmth or even food. But desperate times call for desperate measures. She prayed to God, different Pagan pantheons, even just a vague overview of whomever was listening in. She begged that she would never complain again if she could just be normal. Hell, she would be content with some answers at the very least. She deserved something at the very least, right? But as always nobody answered.

The depression came shortly after the refusal of a response from the invisible forced from above. Lily lay in her bed under the covers with the lights out. She was just too tired to care anymore. All she wanted to do was sleep, but even that was not easily accomplished. She knew she had some meds for anxiety in her dresser but did not feel that this warranted them. This was not anxiety; it was bone crushing sadness and the inability to get away from everything despite the desire to.

Eventually came acceptance. She was unable to change whatever the hell she was. Nothing seemed to be possible regarding removing whatever gene or trigger this was. She was only a teenager after all. She doubted very much that going up to a lab and announcing she transformed into some giant chicken monster with fangs and claws would go well for her. She also did not want to end up in a mental institution. It was probably irrational, but the thought of being kept away without the ability to be free scared her.

She knew not all mental institutions were like that. It was an irrational fear. She understood that the places were set up to help those who needed it and were much better than they had been in the past. But watching a documentary about Willow brook mental asylum during school had permanently instilled a fear of the loss of freedom in her mind.

Eventually, with the thought of making some home-made nachos as motivation, Lily got out of bed and left her room. It was well after midnight, so Sarah and John had already gone to bed. They had tried briefly to talk to her, but after she asked from under the covers for space, they decided a moody teenager wasn't worth the ensuing battle that would have occurred should they continue to talk to her. She cooked some ground beef in a skillet, and taco seasoning, grabbed some lettuce and taco cheese from the fridge, and began putting each item into individual bowls. Lily then pulled a bag of tostitos chips from the cabinet and carried everything back upstairs to her bedroom, placing her spoils onto her computer desk.

After booting up the computer, she began munching on her home-made tacos. They were by no means authentic, but still tasted good to her. That's all that mattered to her.

She quickly went into her search engine and typed in half human half bird hybrid before pressing enter. The first hit to pup up was Harpy from Greek and Roman mythology. She right clicked the link to open it in a new tab before moving on.

Siren was next, a nother creature from Greek Mythology. Again, she right clicked and opened it up in a new tab. Angels also popped up, but Lily doubted that she was in any way an angel. She still opened it up in another tab just in case.

On and on her research went. Eventually she had way too many tabs opened to continue browsing without experiencing horrible lag. Plus, she had lost count of how many chips and dip she had eaten. She quickly went to the bathroom to wash her hands before grabbing a notebook and a pen to jot down her options.

Harpy.

Siren.

Angel.

Moth man.

Fairy.

Succubus.

Devas.

Each one as unlikely as the next in her mind. She didn't transform her lower body or grow claws. She certainly didn't feel the burning passion to be intimate with anyone, nor had she tried to before. She could sing, but nowhere near well enough to lure people to their death. Deciding she needed to take a break, she turned off her computer before cleaning up her midnight snack.

Afterwards, Lily decided to shower. The hot water was scolding, but it helped to ease the tension in her body. It was too late in the night to get a good night's sleep for school. Likewise, it was too early to really begin getting ready for school.

As the water gently rolled down her body, she closed her eyes and let the warmth embrace her.

She wasn't human. It didn't mean she was a monster in an evil way. Humans could be monsters and it had nothing to do with shifting forms or growing feathers. They were monsters on the inside, just as some vampires and wolves could be monsters if they set their mind to it.

She grew wings. They were large, feathery, but didn't feel clunky. Instead, they felt delicate. She loved nature and was gifted at growing and healing plants. She could see where they had been picked in her memory, as well as get whisperings of where others were in the trees. Hell, even today she felt like nature was talking to her while she was having a moment earlier in the day in the woods.

She could rule out harpy based on her human feet. She could also rule out siren as her voice wasn't enough to lure people to their death. She was lucky when she was able to keep her pitch and tone correct during a song. Lily didn't grow moth wings or anything along those lines. She also didn't magically show up whenever a disaster would later occur. She also was in no way a succubus that she could find based on her research. That just left two options from her research.

Fairy or Devas.

As much fun as it would be to live up to the nickname Tinkerbelle, she wasn't sure if fairy fit. She had never heard of Devas until that night, so she also wasn't sure.

An idea popped into her mind after that. She could ask Carlisle! He was several centuries old and had extensive knowledge of the world. Maybe he has run across something similar to her or knew someone they could contact! Lily hated having to ask favors of people, but she was going insane trying to get a handle on her powers.

Mitigation of her powers by no means means mastering them or even managing them. It was just a way to try and keep them contained without having any idea how well her ideas would work. If she wanted to be able to hold her own and protect her newfound family, she would need to work on herself. Hiding away from the world doesn't stop it from rotating. Things kept moving whether she involved herself. She refused to be a liability for anyone, let alone for her family.

Turning off the shower head, she dried off and returned to her room. She saw she had a text message from Jasper.

Jasper- "Hey doll, Alice said you were still up. You ok?"

Lily smiled at reading the message before feeling oddly creeped out. She appreciated what Alice's powers were and how she used them to protect her family. Lily wasn't sure how much control she had but feeling like she was constantly being watched was starting to tire her out.

Lily- "Hey cowboy. I'm fine, just doing some research. Bella stopped by demanding I talk to the pack. I tried explaining we aren't on the best of terms, but you know how she is."

Surprisingly, Jasper responded right away.

Jasper- "Don't put yourself in harms way just because Bella Swan of all people demands something."

Lily- "Thanks Jaz. Hey, could you ask your dad if I could talk to him sometime this week? I have some questions about why I transform that maybe he could help with if he's free? I'm stuck between Fairy and Devas."

Jasper- "Sure thing. You should take tomorrow off from school. You won't be able to stay awake."

Lily- "Can't. I must maintain my GPA. I can't afford to fall behind."

Jasper- "I've been through school a time or two. I can help you catch up. You really shouldn't be putting your health at risk, but its your choice."

Lily- "Thanks Jaz. I'll compromise. I'll see how I'm feeling by lunch. If I can't tough it out ill go to the nurses office and go home."

Jasper- "Only if that's what you want doll. Its your choice. You know your body better than anyone else. I'm just worrying is all."

Lily- "I appreciate it 😊 "

Lily put her phone away after that. She set an alarm for an hour so that she could try to nap before school.
