*** So, how is everyone feeling after that last chapter? Everyone okay? I don't know about you all, but I certainly have been dying to get her secret finally out! I have had what she is in my mind since the first chapter. I even gave a hint of it way back towards the beginning of the story when she was googling things 😉 I hope you all enjoyed it! I also apologize for the long hiatus. ***
The flight back to forks seemed easier and almost like a blip in Lily's mind. After her meeting with the Volturi time seemed to put her and her family in a bubble of happiness. She knew what she was now. She knew her family was safe, and she had an obscure address where she could mail a letter that Aro had provided strict guidelines to follow to ensure it was received and responded to.
She was a Daeva. A being of nature. The few copies of scrolls and books that Aro had gifted her contained information about not only what she was, but also information about other beings on the Earth that had been found at the time of their writing. Her fingers ached to open them and devour their secret knowledge.
Her parents, deciding they needed normality in their lives no matter how brief, requested that she wait until they are home to crack into them. Lily wasn't thrilled with the idea of waiting longer for answers, but she understood. Her parents and truthfully herself as well needed time to heal and be as normal as possible while they had time to. Returning home was returning to the craziness that engulfed them.
Jasper, her ever present strength, helped keep her calm and sane. He didn't like using his gifts on her or others without their consent, but on occasion it just seeped out of him. Lily would kiss him sweetly on his cheek or lips whenever she felt his gift to ease his worry once he realized what had happened.
Carlisle initially had tried to take the roll of guide, but Sarah only let him have it for two days. Afterwards, she insisted they visit places he hadn't experienced or to revisit places he had with a new eye. Carlisle found himself learning a great deal about his future in-laws, or rather he learned two things.
The first was that Sarah was a strong-willed woman with a heart bigger than almost anyone he had ever met beside his wife, Esme.
The second was that John had a pranking streak as wide as Emmett's. Once John became more open around him, Carlisle learned this fact the hard way. Or rather, he learned it the messy way.
John had covered him completely in garlic butter in an elaborate prank that had Sarah fuming, Lily laughing, and his son Jasper smirking. And the sight of his quiet and somber son smirking at mischief around humans with ease lifted the worry he hadn't realized had weighed down his heart for so long.
As Sarah berated her husband who looked the picture of repentance claiming he could have killed the doctor, Lily's laughing settled down to giggles before she caught her breath and explained that garlic had no effect on their bodies.
John simply shrugged and said he had to make sure the type of person his daughter was involved in wouldn't be so weak as to be taken out by garlic butter.
But back on the plane to Forks started to fill Lily with worry once again.
She was still working out what she would write to the contact she had been given. The drama with the pack still existed. Bella and Edward most likely had done something stupid once again without regard for anyone else. Rose would be pissed at her for putting herself and her family in danger. Emmett would be the only one happy to see her simply because she got him a souvenir from Italy as a prank; a plastic Volturi crest necklace she had found in a giftshop. Another reason Rose would be pissed at her; While Emmett would see the joke in the gift Rose may or may not.
Then again Rose had a humor that could surprise anyone once they get to know her. Or rather if she let them get to know her.
Jasper grabbed Lily's bags from the luggage conveyer and hugged her tightly before whispering in her ear that he would see her later that night after he checked in with his family. They kissed before breaking apart and Lily hugging Carlisle and sitting in the back seat of her parent's car.
They drove home without talking; the only sounds being the rain on the windshield, the wipers clearing it, and the radio playing some pop music that Lily couldn't be bothered to pay attention to.
Instead, she took out her notebook to work on her letter draft. The rules Aro had told her about the letter were strict but straight forward.
First, she could not use direct language or claims of supernatural beings.
Second, she needed to provide her contact information that could not be traced back to her. This was more difficult. She would have to use a PO box under an alias that Jasper had set up for her. He had contacts she couldn't begin to understand yet.
Third, the letter must be placed into a plane unimpressive envelope written with black ink. It must not be tracked mail or first class. It had to be as unassuming as possible.
Forth, she must use gloves and ensure no DNA of any sort is left on or in the letter.
Finally, the stamps used had to depict nature in some way. It was a code Aro had explained. It is an unassuming way for them to help decipher if the person is sincere in their search.
Lily thought that it seemed extreme, but how could she judge them for wanting to keep their secrecy? She tried not to think of what happened to people who threatened to expose them.
She got out her pencil from her backpack and flipped to a blank page.
"Hello Grandma, I hope my letter reaches you well. I can't remember the last time I saw you!" Lily paused. She felt that was a good start.
"You know how I have been estranged from all my family ever since I was little, but I want that to change. I met some friends while I was in Europe who helped me reach out to you. I'm sorry for writing to you out of the blue. I hope we can arrange to talk so I can get to know you and you me! I really want to know my family." She paused once more, chewing on the end of her pencil eraser while she thought what to write next."
"Lily, love, don't chew on erasers/ It'll stay in your gut forever," Sarah chided. John snorted but said nothing while he kept driving.
Lily just smiled up at Sarah before returning to her letter draft.
"Its awfully lonely thinking I have been all alone this entire time only to find out I have a whole family who didn't even know I existed. I hope we can get to know each other finally.
My hopeful love,
Your estranged granddaughter."
Lily wasn't sure if the letter would work or if she had included enough vague dialogue. She tried to keep it as minimum as possible in identifying information while trying to convey a lot more unsaid.
She was ready to know her family.
