Chapter 1 - But it's too late now

Never thought trouble had a face, nor a name… Eyes that stared right into my soul. She sat knowingly on her kitchen counter as she smiled softly. How we got here was one hell of a ride that I never expected. And if I knew I would have ended up here years ago, I would have made my life choices so differently. Things would have been completely different.
It started the day right after New Year in 2019. When I saw her in passing. She looked out of place as she rushed to the main building at work. She was always rushing to and from somewhere. A busy body.
I look to my co-worker Sergeant Gray Fullbuster as he greets her with ease, a small embrace shared between the two of them as she glances to me with a slight frown on her face. I didn't know how to read her expression back then, and I think I still don't know how to, as she gives me a curt nod and then she continues on her way. Not even uttering a single word.
"And that?" I ask him with a frown on my face not really knowing what had transpired between the two of us just now.
"Just being friendly with the newbie." He replies and I furrow my eyes even further. But I just nod my head as I look to her back as she walks with Ezra Scarlet, my friend for a few years, now looks to me as she walks with the blonde and she smiles as well. But it wasn't a pleasant smile, more of a sinister smile that I couldn't explain.
"She's new? When did she report here?" I ask taking a drag from my cigarette.
"This morning, she got promoted here it seems, she's going to work with Erza and Aries." I laugh at that. She wouldn't survive with those two. No one could. Good luck newbie. Good luck.

I stop my car and I look up and see Constable Laxus Dreyer standing to the side as newbie stands next to Gray, again a small embrace between the two of them, would it be wrong to suspect that there is something more between the two of them then just being friendly? I know Gray longer then you would think. Yet I knew nothing about her so I couldn't really suspect anything. I pull my shirt straight and open the door to my car.
"Constable Jellal Fernandes is the sector co-ordinator of sector 4." I hear Gray say in the voice he always used to impress ladies, I close the car door and make my way towards them. I glance up and see how she looks at Jellal with amusement like she was hanging on every word he was saying, her eyes floating over to Laxus and then they are back on Gray.
"You see this sector shit is just shit," I hear Jellal complain like he always does and I shake my head from side to side, a small chuckle leaves my lips as well, he always had this way with words, how he can talk so much yet say absolutely nothing at all. That was the way of Jellal for you.
"And that," he points over to me as I come closer. "You know as Constable Dragneel." Gray says and I look up, I wave my hand a bit dismissively to them and move closer to the little group that has now formed between us, not even sure when she got to know me in the start. "That's about all the co-ordinators, including me." Gray says with a smile on his face, almost like he was trying to impress her, his arm still around her.
"Now that she knows us, we should know who she is." I find myself saying as I pull my packet of cigarettes closer, pulling one out as I look up and I meet her eyes. I see surprise and amusement in her eyes as she looks to me, but I just can't seem to read her. She was a closed book. There was just something different about her and I found myself liking it.
She was about to open her mouth to say something when Erza comes into view. "Lucy I need to show you this before you go to the meeting." Erza states as a matter of fact, I can see the curiosity in my friend's eyes as she looks from Gray who instantly takes his arm from the newbie and stands straight. Was my suspicious right then about there being something more between the two of them? I chuckle to myself. I watch as the newbie turns on her heels not replying to my simple request and she gives a small wave towards the group before she starts following Erza. Comply…
"Did I miss something?" I ask a bit surprise and look between Laxus, Jellal and Gray who all seem as surprised as I am.
"Not really." Laxus says as his eyes looks to the newbie as she continues to walk, and I couldn't blame him, I myself saw the perfection that her ass was. Before I could get caught by my fellow co-workers my attention is turned back to lighting the cigarette in my mouth. I would choose another time to admire it, when it wouldn't be noticed by everyone else.
"But I missed the introduction" I find myself saying despite not wanting to draw attention to my fascination in the new girl and at this Jellal shakes his head from side to side as he re-adjusts his belt around his waist.
"Lucy Heartfelia, she was promoted here from the Cluster Office." Gray says as a matter of fact like he always does when he tries to seem more intelligent than anyone and everyone, then he lights his own cigarette.
"You two seem familiar." I find myself saying and I think Laxus could hear the enquiry in my voice but he said nothing, he just smiles. Out of the four of us, Laxus was the quiet one, well that was until you got to know him.
"Got to know her when she worked there." I didn't know whether this was his usual code for she was a previous fling or if he actually meant it. He had a bit of a reputation as a man whore, but I doubt Juvia would let that happen now, she had an iron grip on her husband after they got married. And neither did the petite blonde look like his type.
"She got the post of the OPAM capturer?" I ask as I look back to the blonde in question. Knowing full well how badly Erza wanted that post, it was two levels above her pay grade.
"Yeah." Was the only answer I received? Erza and Aries will eat her up alive. More so Erza then Aries though. No person lasted long enough to tell the tale of that office.

I look to Mira as she types franticly on her computer and then back to Levy as she talks, not actually paying attention to the topic she was currently on but I can hear her words. "Natsu, how is Lisanna?" I look to Levy as she talks and it's like I hear her but I am not listening. But the name somewhat registers in my mind as I try to think.
"She's fine." I reply as I continue to sit in front of the blue haired girl. Jellal standing off to the side, talking about God knows what, and if it was about sex, I didn't want to listen, that man could say so much nonsense and people actually listened to him and he would make no sense at all. Sometimes I wonder how that man even made it past 30 and lived to tell the tail.
"And the little one?" She asks and I sigh as I look to the side, my eyes catching sight of newbie making her way here, walking from the main building back to this side.
"He's good." I say as I sit up straight in the chair as the blonde approaches the office where we are currently sitting in. Levy looks to the direction I am looking at and she smiles as she also watches the blonde walk closer. Newbie was a good person because everyone seemed to like her, well except for Erza that is. Just because she stole that promotion from her. But it was a petty reason to hate someone.
"Lucy where have you been, haven't seen much of you." Levy states as the blonde enters the office and she stops short of the door to the hallway, there is this warm smile on her lips as she looks to us. Both myself and Levy looking at her.
"Just been busy, I am replacing the secretary this week while she is on leave. Remember?" The blonde says as she looks to Levy and then her eyes meet mine, they seem warm and welcoming.
"I still haven't gotten an introduction miss," I say trailing off not too sure what to call her because we were still not really properly introduced and at this she frowns but there is a small giggle that escapes her lips as she turns to her side. And calling her 'Miss Newbie' would just be so weird… in so many ways.
"You may address me as Miss Heartfelia, Constable Dragneel," she replies and there is a certain edge to her tone, a playfulness but she was still serious and I raise a brow at this. She was dangerous. And I should have known there and then.
"Oh is that so Miss?" I ask as I continue to look at her, watching her closely as she continues to look to me.
"Yes." She replies before placing one foot in front of the other and making her way to the hallway. There was something about her, how she presented herself, how she acted that just had me intrigued. Lucy Heartfelia was definitely something else.
She closes the door to the hallway but I can still hear her steps down the hallway as she continues to walk. The old hardwood floors giving her away.
"She is quiet something isn't she?" Jellal asks and to this I chuckle. Because his tone of voice said something and I knew that it would never lead to that.
"That one is trouble." Mira says and I look to her with question in my eyes. "I do wonder how she got the job thought, she doesn't seem like anything special." Oh how wrong Mira was. She was something special, we just didn't know it yet. I didn't know it yet.

Leading up to the following weeks I didn't see much of Miss Heartfelia, I didn't see her around our office, I didn't see her around Erza, I didn't see her at the Commanding Officers Office. Had she given in already? I doubt it. And that's when I see her, a young gentleman to her side as she walks hand in hand with him. I look to Laxus and notions towards the blonde and the male beside her.
"And that?" I ask and Laxus looks to me then towards the blonde and her male companion.
"No idea." Laxus states as we both look towards the blonde and the young man making their way to the building where her office was in.
We watch as he says something and she giggles leaning into him, kissing his cheek and pulling him closer. They make their way towards Gray and stop just a small distance from us. In hearing distance but not really, if you know what I mean.
"This must be the one and only Chaise?" Gray states as he hold out his hand and the younger man extends his hand towards him, shaking it. He refrains from extending his hand to me or Laxus, thus making me think the boy is completely rude. But still we were not really that close to be greeted.
"I hope Lucy hasn't shit talked me to you all." The male states to which she lightly punches him. But the smile remains on her face as she clings onto the younger male next to her. She honestly looked so happy and carefree.
"Me? Shit talk you? Never!" She exclaims with a giggle then stands closer to him almost like she is hiding behind him.
"You still enjoying your visit?" Gray asks as he glances towards me and Laxus and then looks back to the blonde and her male companion.
"She keeps me busy." The male exclaims with a chuckle and at this she goes beet red, she was clearly thinking different thoughts then we were, and I do believe it was of a perverted nature but who could blame her.
"He's only here for a week longer thought, so I should abuse him as much as I can." Lucy states as she looks around and then back to Gray never really making eye contact with us.
"Yes, she beats me." The male says and she slaps him playfully.
"I do not." She replies a bit louder this time as they continue to talk to Gray. Laxus and I just continue to look at the three people. Not really eavesdropping but doing it at the same time. When they finally leave Gray walks to us shaking his head from side to side.
"And that?" Laxus was the first to ask this time. Even thought there was more to it than I wanted to ask, I kept my questions to myself. It wasn't my place to even have questions for the blonde nor her companion.
"What?" Gray asks as he pulls out his sunglasses, placing them onto his head as he pulls out a cigarette.
"Newbie and …" Laxus trails off.
"Lucy?" He asks and we both nod. "Oh that is Lucy's boyfriend. He is a Marine for the US." Gray states lighting up the cigarette. So newbie had a boyfriend, I kind of thought that much, a girl like herself wouldn't be single. And he was a US marine. It seemed strange because how did they even end up together. "He came to visit her, they seem good to each other." Gray states very dismissive of the subject of the blonde and her companion and at this Laxus just raises a brow.
"He seems a bit young." Laxus states as he pulls out his phone.
"Yeah, she is 7 years older than he is." Gray says as a matter of fact and I frown. How old was she then.
"Seems she likes them in high school then." I find myself saying and both Laxus and Gray just chuckle as they look towards the blonde and her boyfriend making their way into the building.
"He's 21 I think." Gray replies and to this I almost choke on air. So if he was 21 she would be my age. Meaning 28. She must really like them young it seems. I raise a brow but say nothing. Because each to their own. I watch as they disappear from sight and minutes later they re-appear and walk back the way they came. I watch as her eyes light up as he speaks and how she smiles when she cuddles closer to him. She looked so happy, like she has never experienced heart ache before. Was that how loved looked like?
