Chapter 20 – We'd hook up in my car

I look at my phone as I see it ringing and bring it to my ear answering it as I notion another car to drive into the search bay. "Miss Heartfelia, to what do I owe the pleasure?" I ask as I walk to the driver's side of the vehicle and he rolls down the window.
"Cst Dragneel are they serving chicken or beef stew today?" she asks and I narrow my eyes as I look over to the tent where our Captain was sitting doing the stats.
"Beef stew." I reply into the phone as the driver of the vehicle that I stopped pulled out his driver's licence and his permit to cross the interprovincial boarder. I take it from him and look to his driver's license to the permit.
"Okay good, keep two aside." I hear her say and I frown as I nod my head to the drive and hand him back his documents and notion him to drive. I stop the next car from coming as I move the phone from one ear to the other.
"Why?" I say as I look at the long line of vehicle still waiting to come through.
"Because I'll see you in a bit," she says and I want to smile but I just snort. She hears this and she stops talking for a moment and her side goes quiet for a moment. "Are you okay?" she asks into the phone and I sigh, because too be honest it was just a shit day. I woke up in a bad mood and it was fuck cold this morning and now we are burning in the fucking heat, and I was just fucking irritated. "Natsu?" Lucy's voice rings and I look to the side.
"Yeah sure." I say as I shake my head from side to side. "Who are you coming with? When?" I ask so I know to put on my bullet proof jacket before I got scolded for that again as well.
"You don't sound fine." Lucy says and I just shake my head from side to side.
"I'm ok. So tell me…" I say and I hear her sigh, sometimes she knew I could be more stubborn then she was and she would just give up.
"Me and Mavis will be visiting you in about 40 to 50 minutes." She says and I just nod my head knowing full well that she can't see me. This was just something I did. "See you soon Dragneel." I smile slightly as I end the call not saying my own goodbye. I pull off a few more cars inspecting them as I go before I feel arms wrap around me and pulling me into a tight hug from behind.
Her laugher is like sunshine as she giggles in my ear. "Dragneel! Why are you standing so far in the line! I had to walk forever to get to you!" She says as she continues to hug me from behind.
"Well…" I say as I stop what I am doing and soon I wiggle out of her grip and turn around in her embrace to look at her smiling lips. Her eyes staring back at me as she simply seems to be a ray of sunshine herself. I wrap my arms around her and pull her close to me as I return her hug and she pulls me closer and closer. In that moment I almost felt whole. I look down at her warm eyes as she stares up at me.
"Well what?" She asks as she looks to me.
"Well you two look like lovers." We both turn to the voice as we both freeze and turn our heads towards the voice which just spoke. Instantly we both loosen our grip on each other and look to each other than towards Gray who is staring at us. "Well unless I get a hug as well." At this Lucy removes her hands from me and then leaps into action as she skips to Gray and gives him a hug as well. I feel a chill run down my spine as I watch how she awkwardly moves to stand on the tip of her toes and wrap her arms around the taller male.
"You know I love you all equally!" I hear Lucy say and there is a nervous giggle that left her lips.
Gray chuckles as he hugs the blonde and then he takes a step back to look at her. "We know, I just wanted a hug as well." At this Gray full out laughs and I even give a nervous chuckle. "So what brings you all the way out here?" Gray asks as he looks to me then to Lucy and he pulls out a packet of cigarettes.
"I came…. With … Chocolate!" She states as she pushes her hands into her pocket and she pulls out a slab chocolate. I chuckle at this. And Gray just shakes his head from side to side. She looks to me, her face seemed softer when she looks to me then when she looks to Gray.
"All this way for chocolate?" Gray asks pulling a cigarette to his lips and lighting it.
"No… Mavis came to do inspection as well." Lucy says as she hands the chocolate to me and I take it from her, opening it and taking a piece. "And I need to inspect the roadblock equipment." She states with a pout and I just nod my head as I place the piece of chocolate into my mouth and start eating it.
"Well that sucks." I manage to say as I place another piece of chocolate to my lips. Placing the rest of it in my jacket pocket, not even offering any to Gray as I know she brought it strictly for me. She turns to the side as she looks down the road then back to me.
"Let me go and start inspecting, I'll see you in a bit." She says as she starts making her way towards the beginning of the roadblock signage. I watch as she walks away and soon she is just a small dot on the horizon. I look to Gray as he takes a drag of his smoke.
"You are going to give her grey hair before she is ready!" I say and at this he chuckles.
"I'm just teasing her. You know I always do." Gray says as he rolls his eyes at me. I just shake my head from side to side at I move to the parking bay to pull off a few more cars, always keeping a watchful eye on where the blonde is. And how she stops at each signage to take a picture and note the condition of the signage.
As soon as she reaches me I start to walk with her as we start to make our way to the tent. I see Mavis sitting underneath the tent writing in the Occurrence Book. I stand at attention as I salute Mavis. "Brigadier." I greet and she looks up to me as she nods her head.
"Hi Natsu," She greets and then she continues to write in the OB. I watch as Lucy walks to her and kneels next to her showing her something on her phone. "Is that all of it?" she asks and Lucy smiles nodding her head.
"Yes ma'am." Lucy says and I walk to the back at I take out two food parcels of beef stew and then move to Lucy. She looks up with a smile and then she takes both the parcels. "Let me put this in the car." She states and I just nod her head as Mavis hands her the car keys. I watch as the blonde rushes to the Car and places the food in the back before heading right back to the tent and placing the keys on the table.
"How are things here at the roadblock?" Mavis asks as she looks up to me.
"We are getting a lot busier. And the Traffic Police are only here for a while then they disappear and leave us to do all the work." At this she frowns and she looks from side to side, narrowing her eyes.
"Captain!" she calls and our captain looks to the tent as he starts making his way towards the tent. I look to Lucy who looks from Mavis to her phone, then she taps Mavis on her shoulder and shows Mavis something on her phone. Mavis frowns for a bit and then shakes her head. "Lucy can you draft the message and call them for the additional information?" Mavis asks to which Lucy nods her head and then turns to her side.
Our Captain finally makes it to the table and he salutes Mavis. "Brigadier?" He asks to which Mavis shakes his head from side to side.
"Captain every time the Traffic Police leaves please call me and report to me. It is unacceptable that we do their duties." Mavis states and the Captain nods his head. I watch as Lucy steps out from underneath the tent and then she is standing to the side placing the phone to her ear. I watch as she speaks lowly into the phone and then the franticly looks around and then I notice she needs a pen and paper which I hand to her.
She gives me a grateful smile and nods her head as she writes with one hand while holding her phone to her ear. I look at the page that she is writing on, and then back to her. It seems she is writing down names. And then she sighs and scratches one name and writes another.
Then she takes the phone from her ear and now she has both hands on her phone as she starts typing. "And that?" I ask as I stand closer to her, holding the piece of paper to her as I watch her type.
"Someone tested positive." At this I narrow my eyes as I watch her type again.
"Who?" I ask and at this she stops and she looks up to me.
"Someone at the Firearm department." She replies and I narrow my eyes.
"Levy or Mira?" I ask and at this she just shakes her head from side to side. So it was one of the males in the office. I just nod my head. And then she returns to typing away on her phone. I keep the piece of page she scribbled on for her as I reach into my jacket and pull out the chocolate she had given me. "What are you doing now though?" I ask as I awkwardly open the chocolate and break off a piece of chocolate, bringing it to my mouth.
"She is doing the report for a person who tested positive." I hear Mavis says from beside me and then she takes the chocolate from me and breaks off a piece for herself and pop it into her mouth. I glare at her for a moment as Lucy looks up and then she frowns but nods her head. "How many contacts?" Mavis asks as she breaks off another piece and hands me back the chocolate.
"Five Brigadier." She replies as she types further on her phone and Mavis just nods her head.
"Anyone noteworthy?" Mavis asks and I look to Lucy who has a soft smile on her face.
"No Brigadier." Lucy replies and at this Mavis just nods and then turns from us and she walks towards the people manning the roadblock.
"What the fuck was that?" I ask under my breath to which Lucy looked at me and rolled her eyes.
"Basically her asking if I think someone is bullshitting us and just doesn't want to be at work." I narrow my eyes and nod my head.
"Look the other way what I'm doing ain't easy, Bloody hands stained from the people who deceive me, Muddy hands break through the chains go free me" Neffex – Free me
"So I have some good news." Dan says as he places his computer box on the table next to mine.
"Which is?" I ask as I move his monitor and start plugging in his wires. We were going to play some online gaming this weekend. Just to unwind and relax since I only worker on Sunday night again.
"There is a guy at our station who is interested in a cross transfer to your station since he stays in the area." At this I look up to Dan who smiles brightly at me. This was good news.
"Which component does he work in?" I ask as I place the keyboard correctly.
"Client Service Centre." At this I nod my head. This might just be my one way ticket away from the dreadful station. I smile as I nod my head. "And I already spoke to him, he would love working as a sector manager." At this I just continued to smile.
"Well that is great news. Get his transfer papers and then I will fill in mine." I say as I take a seat and watch as Dan continues to plug in his wires. "The faster we do it the better." I say and I see as Dan smiles to me.
"Do you really hate your station that much?" Dan asks and to this my face falls. It's not that I hated the station, but more the management of the station. I liked some of the people yes.
"I just want to get away from there. If you knew all the shit we have gone through at that station…" I say and at this Dan lowers his eyes.
"You should ask Lucy to help you." At this I frown and look at my friend in question.
"Why is that?" I ask not too sure why he brought her up.
"She mentioned that she worked in HR and with transfers when she just started in the police. Maybe she can assist." At this I furrow my brows. My friend smiles towards me and then just shakes his head. "If you stopped looking at her ass so much you would hear what she has to say." At this I almost choke and hit my friend.
"What the fuck man?" I ask and at this he laughs.
"I'm joking. She helped me with my danger allowance a while back and then she mentioned it." At this I just nod my head and I do recall her saying that she worked at HR before becoming the Station Commanders secretary.
"I'll ask her for her help." I say and at this Dan just nods his head towards me.

My phone beeps and I look to the side. 'Hey.' That was always her simple greeting to me.
'Hihi.' I type back then look to Dan who has since passed out. It was early Sunday morning. Too early for anyone to be awake. And I should probably get some sleep before I was going to report on duty later today.
'Could you come to me before you report on duty?' I furrow my brows, it was a simple request from her, which didn't come often.
'Sure, any specific reason?' I ask as I remove my earphones from my head and place them to the side, exiting the game I was playing as I continue.
'I got you cigarettes,' at this I look to my side and to my packet of cigarettes which I was nursing to ensure that they lasted long. 'Or do you want me to leave them at the station?' I frown as I look to the message again, why would she even suggest to leave them at the station?
'I will let you know when I am on my way.' I say as I see that she reads the message and then she goes offline. Was something up with her? Was she having a bad day even though her day just started? I furrow my brows again and keep looking at my phone. 'Could we have a cup of coffee when I come get the cigarettes?' I ask and for a few moments she remains offline and then she pops on and then reads my message. That was one thing about Lucy, she wasn't one of those people who wouldn't reply to messages, she instantly read and replied unless she was asleep. Even when she got really busy she would always read the message and give a short reply.
'Sure.' I smile slightly at that and place my phone on the table in front of me and that when I notice Dan looking at me.
"What has you smiling on a Sunday morning at the 05:00?" he softly asks and I smile even brighter shaking my head from side to side.
"Wouldn't you like to know?" I say before I rise from my seat and place my phone in my pocket. "Let's get some sleep." I say as I nothing towards the door, since my wife and son was visiting his fiancé I had prepared my sons bed for him to sleep in.
I start to walk and soon he follows suite and I show him to my son's room to where he just goes and lays down on the bed, instantly falling asleep as his head touches the pillow. I shake my head and move to my room which I shared with my wife. I kick off my shoes and soon I am underneath my covers and fast asleep. I am not sure if I was tired or if I just wanted the time to pass so I could see Lucy. But either way I was asleep as soon as my head touched that pillow.

'Location?' I send to Lucy as I start my car and wait patiently for Dan to get into the fucking car so I could drop him at home before I make my way towards Lucy.
'Pin drop sent.' I smile but as soon as Dan is seated next to me, my smile is gone and my phone is placed aside.
"Why the fuck are you going to work so early anyway?" Dan asks as he closes the door and then he pulls the safety belt over his chest and plug it in.
"Firstly I have to drop you and your computer off and then make my way towards work. And your slow ass always takes time doing anything." I say as I grit my teeth to which Dan just laughs.
"I'm not slow!" Dan yells but chuckles nether the less. "You are the slow one." I hear him say and I want to roll my eyes at this foolish man beside me. We start driving and as we exit the complex to my house I look left to right and then turn. "Natsu…" I listen as the man next to me calls out to me and I turn to glance at him as I continue driving.
"What is it Dan?" I ask and I sound harsh even to myself.
"Thanks for spending the weekend with me. I really appreciate it and your friendship." I furrow my brows and look to the younger male next to me as he sincerely says these words.
"Anytime man. You know that's what friends are for." I say as I give him a sideway smile and at this he smiles brightly and nods his head.
"It's been a while since I really made friends, or rather good friends." Dan starts and I glance to him as I take a turn.
"Why would you say that, I am sure you have friends?" I say as my phone beeps and I reach for it and look at the screen.
'How long till you arrive?' was Lucy's message and I sigh as I bring the phone to my mouth and I start to record a voice message.
"I'm just dropping of Dan and then I will be right there. Give or take about 25 to 35 minutes." I say and place the phone between my legs.
"They want you at the station already?" Dan asks with a curious look on his face.
"Yeah we need to poor fuel into the buss and pump the tyres." I say making up a lie as I go. "But back to what you were saying." I say as I try to get my friend back on track to what he was saying.
"Oh… Yeah most of my friends are not 'my' friends… if you know what I mean, most are friends with Sherry so they only tolerate me. And I know that." At this I frown because that was really sad.
"Why would you say that?" I ask as I continue to drive towards his house.
"I stopped talking to a lot of my own friends… after we started dating… but you know how she is…" At this I furrow my brows. His eyes briefly meeting mine as I look to him and then back to the road. "If it's not according to her standard it's not good enough." Was Dan in the same situation I was with my wife's parents? "But you have your co-workers and friends and your own life and that's nice." I look down for a moment and see I have a message from Lucy but I ignore it as I continue to drive.
"It shouldn't be up to Sherry who you hang around with or who your friends with. You are your own person." I say and I see him smile somewhat at that. "And I mean I know Sherry isn't too fond of me but she likes Lisanna and even if she didn't I would still remain your friend. You know that." I say and at this he truly smiles brightly nodding his head towards me.
"Thank you Natsu." Dan says and I shake my head, I have no idea why he was even thanking me, he was a good dude. I turn the last corner and then we are at the gate of their place. He opens the gate and soon I drive in and towards his house. My wife's car still in the parkway. I smile to myself and then stop the car. I grab at my phone.
'Okay no worries, drive safe.' Was Lucy's reply and I instantly type back as Dan starts to unbuckle his safety belt and start to get out of the car.
'Drive from his place to yours is about 20 minutes. See you soon.' I send back and unbuckle my safety belt as I get out of the car as well to help him unload his computer. I open my boot and soon he hands me his screen as he rushes to open the gate and the front door then rushing back to get his computer box. I wait for him to walk in front of me and soon we are met by the aroma of wine and good food. As we side step into the kitchen I can see Sherry cooking up a storm while Lisanna is sitting at the counter enjoying a glass of wine.
"Well hello ladies." I say as I move to Lisanna and I kiss her cheek and nod my head towards Sherry who has a tight lipped smile on her face.
"Did you boys enjoy your boy's weekend?" Sherry asks and soon Dan places his computer box on the dining table and I place the screen next to it.
"It was great. We should really do this again." Dan says as he moves to Sherry and place his hands around her small frame hugging her. I move to Lisanna and just stand at her side.
"Yeah you can drop him off at any time." I say and at this Lisanna chuckles.
"That's good to know. Gaming keeps you boys busy and out of trouble." Lisanna says and I can't help but notice the undertone of sarcasm. I smile and nod my head towards her.
"Well I just came to drop him off, I need to head to the station, the buss needs fuel and we need to pump air into the tyres so I'm going to go do that, you never know if my group is on time or not." I say as I place an arm around Lisanna as I pull her to me.
"I was wondering why you were so early." Sherry is the one to say this and I just nod my head and smile.
"I will leave my wife in your hands a while longer. But text me when you do send her home." At this Sherry chuckles and so does Lisanna. Lisanna pulls me closer and pecks me on the cheek as I say my goodbye to my friend and his fiancé and my wife.
I get back to my car and soon I and buckled up and I am on rout to Lucy. Something about the tone Lisanna and Sherry was talking in didn't sit well with me. But I wasn't going to break my head over that right now.
