"Lee, people in our situations have to take risks in order to change our stars."
Lee looked around and found himself in the Lothal Market Sector. He rubbed the back of his throbbing head as he stared at his father in front of him. He looked young and happy. This was definitely a dream.
"It'll be alright Lee," Riv said. Lee reached out to touch his father's shoulder but was unable to move. As he struggled to move a loud explosion went off.
BANG!
The market became flooded with terrified people running toward the center of the market. Lee panicked, still unable to move, as the crowd began to engulf him.
"It'll be alright Lee," Riv repeated, taking a few steps backwards into the crowd.
"Dad! Help?" Lee cried out as he struggled to keep from being crushed.
"You and your sister are more capable than I ever was,"Riv said and vanished.
"WALKER!" A Rodian alerted the crowd of the AT-RT's. It was the same as the day of the massacre. The AT-RT rotated it's guns and pointed directly at Lee.
PEW PEW!
"Lenore!" Lee cried out as he covered his head to shield himself from the blast. The firing stopped and he looked up to see the entry hatch open. Out stepped Lenore. She sat on the top of the walker smirking and pointed her finger at him and pretended to shoot him with her hand.
"Gotcha," She said.
"Lee," Denz nudged Lee awake. He was sitting on the hard cold floor of the Imperial Base hanger with his crew, as two stormtroopers stood guard. His head continued to throb and he was nauseous. He must have a concussion.
"Welcome back to the land of the living," Riq muttered, eyeing the base for possible escape routes but it was useless. There were too many patrol units at attention.
"What happened?" Lee asked.
"What did I say about talking?!" The stormtrooper yelled, approaching Lee raising his blaster to strike him again.
"Hey relax TK-710," TK-127 said, grabbing his arm. "How do you expect to get any information out of them if you bash it out of their heads?"
"We're not telling you anything!" Denz growled.
Lee looked at Rya worried. This was it. They were sure to be tortured especially once they learned how each of them were connected. With her hands bound behind her, Rya wiggled her wedding ring finger to show Lee she had removed her ring. He sighed with relief, knowing that was one less thing he would have to worry about. He would slip his off once they were moved to a cell.
"Oh yeah," TK-710 turned his attention to Denz. "You will soon enough. You'll be singing like a jawa."
"You've never seen a jawa, Core Boy. Bet you've never even been out to the Outer Rim," TK-127 mocked. TK-710 shoved TK-127 and the two began to argue.
"Shut it womprat!" TK-710 hit TK-127 in the gut with the butt of his blaster.
"Bantha fodder!" TK-127 kicked TK-710 in the shins.
"This is supposed to be the Emperor's finest?" Riq asked as he wondered if this would be the best time to make a run for it.
"Attention!" An officer said approaching. TK-127 and TK-710 stopped and saluted the officer. "What is the meaning of this?"
"The rebels sir," TK-710 responded and handed the officer a pair of comlinks. "Picked up their signal and traced it to the civilian shipyard about an hour ago. Think they're here to disrupt Empire day. Could be more of them but they aren't talking."
The officer looked the rebel group over unimpressed. "Well we have ways of making uncooperative individuals compliant."
"My credits are on the wiseguy," TK-710 said, pointing to Denz.
"Nobody asked for your opinion TK-710" The officer scolded.
"I bet it's the girl that talks first," TK-127 added, hoping to ease TK-710 embarrassment in front of the officer. The officer turned his head and frowned at the trooper.
"Move them to the detention level immediately. Let them stew a bit before we begin our interrogations. Unit 35 you're on watch. TK-127 take the first shift."
"But sir, it's ascension week," TK-127 moaned.
"What?!" the officer approached the stormtrooper fiercely. "Did you join the Imperial Army for festivals and betting on pod races? Let alone the other extra curricular activities you bucketheads take part in?"
"No sir," TK-127 answered submissively.
"Then I suggest you get moving," The officer rolled his eyes and left.
"I can't wait until TK-421 gets back from Unit 56. You're a terrible partner," TK-710 said to TK-127, motioning to Lee and his crew to stand, "Alright. Move along."
"So how we gonna get out of this one Lieutenant?" Denz asked Rya.
Rya keenly watched TK-127 pace back and forth. She knew they were in a tough spot, but she hadn't lost hope yet. She had been able to send K2-SO a distress signal from the ship before they had been arrested. But she knew Andor would not come for them. They had agreed if anyone had been captured, those still free would carry on with the mission and have Mon Mothma and Bail Organa figure out the extraction arrangements. Though that would only be helpful if the Empire didn't terminate them first.
"Not sure Denz, but let's not lose our heads just yet." Rya said, turning away from the energy barrier of the cell and taking a seat beside Lee. She watched his face and could see something was troubling him more than their current situation. "What is it?"
"I saw her," Lee whispered, hoping Denz and Riq wouldn't overhear.
"Did you speak to her?" Rya asked hopefully. If Lee had seen Lenore they may have a way out.
"No,"Lee said. "I couldn't."
"What are you two love birds talking about?" Denz butted in.
"Keep watch Denz. You too Riq," Rya commanded.
"Just tell me to mind my business Ry," Denz said, offended and joined Riq. "Jules would have."
"Nothing to watch but the lone buckethead I'm afraid," Riq complained, suspicious of what Lee and Rya were talking about. "I think Andor was right about those two. Bad idea to have a couple in the same crew."
"I saw her in the market. She was delivering a box of food to the family that was being evicted from the fruit stand," Lee said.
"That's good isn't it?" Rya tried to point out the positive. "Means she hasn't forgotten those the Empire is oppressing."
"Oye another buckethead has entered the room," Denz announced as he saw a shorter stormtrooper walk in and chat with TK-127. "Seems a bit short to be a stormtrooper."
"How did she know they needed help?" Lee pondered ignoring Denz. "Unless she was there. I think she's the one that shot the vendor."
"Lee, you don't know that. And even if it was her, she was following orders," Rya tried to defeat the sister in law she had never met.
"Looks like a guard change," Riq added.
"Orders…she was there the day of the Lothal Market Massacre. She knows what happened to Stobo and our father. She was evicted from our farm just as I was when we were kids. How can she? Coming from where we come from? After everything we've gone through? Rya…my sister is truly gone."
"Hey they just called us scum, flip them off," Denz said and nudged Riq who had no problem giving the offensive gesture. TK-127 shook his head and left the detention level.
"Lee, the Empire has capitalized on people's fear and drawn them into their system. Lenore is just trapped. You can't lose hope." Rya tried to comfort her husband but she had to admit the truth was ugly and their fate was not looking good for them.
"Oye the short trooper's headed this way," Riq alerted them as Rya and Lee stopped speaking. "Must of not liked how I said hello."
"Look who's calling scum, scum?" Denz muttered to the stormtrooper looking through the energy barrier.
"Don't waste your energy," Riq laughed. "They're just bucketheads. Empty inside."
"Quiet you two," Rya warned, as she leaned against Lee. "No use in making a bad situation worse."
"Do you share your friends' opinion?" It was a female trooper. She was focused on Lee. Perplexed by the attention Lee stood up and approached the barrier.
"Does the opinion of a rebel really matter to a stormtrooper?" He asked tiredly. He had had enough interactions with the Imperials to last him a lifetime. This one would not be one he made a fuss over.
"No," She responded, "But my brother's opinion matters."
It couldn't be. It was Lenore in full Imperial Stormtrooper Uniform, a sight Lee hoped he never see. His blood began to boil. He knew for sure now it was her this afternoon in the market. She had been the one who pulled the trigger. She was not the girl he had grown up with, who endured the abandonment of their mother, faced the hardships of poverty, or the rescuer that pulled him out of the market sector during the massacre. She was a stormtrooper and he couldn't bear it. Rya approached the shield barrier slowly.
"Lenore?" Rya asked, Lenore didn't answer. She was waiting for Lee to say something. Hoping that after all this time her brother would finally have something to say to her.
"Lee, your sister is a stormtrooper?" Denz asked in disbelief.
"Talk about a complicated family,"Riq remarked.
"Quiet." Rya commanded. "Lee, say something."
"I'd hoped I'd never see you again." Lee said. "Especially like this."
"Lee!" Rya protested. She knew Lee was angry with his sister but now was not the time for a sibling feud.
"I suppose you're just dying to tell me 'I told you so'." Lee remarked glaring at his sister.
"It's not her fault." Rya said, trying to keep their chances of escape from diminishing. "She's not the one that arrested us."
"Yeah but she would've," said Denz, watching Lenore.
"Orders are orders,"Riq echoed.
"Face it Rya." Lee said sadly. "We failed. Andor is on his own. I'm headed to a labor camp just like my father."
"Did you forget? He never made it to the labor camp." Lenore stated. "And neither will you."
She walked over to the control panel and shot it, disabling the shield and the cameras. She opened the holding crates and tossed a blaster to each of them. Perhaps he had been wrong. Perhaps her defiant nature was something the Empire couldn't weed out of her.
"Wait," Denz said, "I thought she worked with the Empire?"
"Do you really want to debate this now?" Riq remarked checking the corners for any backup headed their way.
"Go down cell block 20 and cut down the side passage. It will lead you to your ship." Lenore said.
"Thank you" Rya said and motioned for them to move out. She darted around the exit with Denz behind her.
"Come with us," Lee said instinctively, but regretted it the moment the words left his lips.
"I can't," she said." If I come with you they'll track you down for sure."
He was relieved. He had no idea what Lenore had done in the name of the Empire. Especially after seeing her today in the Market Sector. But he was grateful for her help even though he was angered to see what she had become.
"Suit yourself. Sorry about this," He raised his blaster and shot her in the shoulder.
"Argh!" She screamed in pain and fell to the floor.
"Lee!" Riq called. "Let's go!"
"So it looks believable," He said and raced after his crew. He didn't look back. He knew if he did he'd be unable to leave her behind.
"We need to contact Andor!" Rya yelled as they exited Coruscant's atmosphere.
"And put his location at risk?" Lee questioned preparing the ship to jump to lightspeed.
"What about Lenore?" Rya counted. "She's bound to be discharged or arrested after they find out what she did. Maybe Andor can extract her. Save her."
"Give it up Ry," Lee said. Rya hated it when he called her by her nickname. It was unlike him and he only did it when he was angry with her. "Lenore will be fine. She's always been able to take care of herself. Besides, it'll look like we busted out and overpowered her"
"Yeah man because you shot her," Riq spoke up.
"What?!" Rya yelled. "After she helped us?"
"It was in the shoulder?!" Lee yelled back at his crew. "She needed a cover story so I gave her one. Don't look at me like that."
"Lee Tersu, I don't know what's gotten into you but you are not acting like the man I married," Rya said in front of Riq and Denz. This was their first true fight as a married couple and he was certain it wouldn't be their last. He ignored Rya's comment and continued to adjust the ship's controls.
"Strap in everyone. We're jumping in one minute," Lee said stoically.
"I'm sending a message to Andor whether you like it or not," Rya firmly stated.
"Sure thing Lieutenant," Lee mocked and watched her storm off to the back of the ship. Riq followed as Denz took the co-pilot seat. "What?"
"Nothing," Denz said, watching his friend who clearly wasn't himself. Something had shifted in him. Something dark. The war was closer than it had even been and he worried his friend would be devoured by it. "Just if you ever need to talk–"
"That's all you do Denz, is talk" Lee scoffed.
"Hey!" Denz yelled back at him. "I'm here for you nerfherder. We're a crew. We're family. Now dish before I shoot you in the shoulder!"
Lee was shocked. He had no idea Denz had grown to care so much about him. He had to admit as much as he was annoyed by him in the past, this moment meant a lot. He was at a loss for words and sighed. He knew he was acting unreasonably.
"It's heavy," Lee said.
"We've done heavy before. Now start at the beginning. It's a long trip to Dantooine and judging by the size of that argument you and Ry just had I don't think she's coming back to the cockpit until we get there."
"I think you're right," Lee agreed and took a deep breath ready to finally tell someone the whole truth.
"So storytime," Denz fastened his seatbelt as the ship jumped to lightspeed.
"When I was eight, my family's farm was taken and we were forced to move to a settlement camp called Tarkintown…"
