Mina had been watching Izuku for a while now, firing him occasional glances as he and All Might perfected his Ultimate Move. It really reassured her, knowing that he'd found a way to fight using his Quirk that wasn't going to cause him more damage. It felt like a weight had been lifted off her shoulder, and she could only imagine that now he knew it worked, he was feeling even more relieved.
Mina herself, however, still had yet to use her 'Ultimate Move' for more than three seconds before she either lost control, or the focus of her move began to deteriorate. The name she'd given her Ultimate Move was Jet Stream. By making a cone shape with her right hand, which she did by making a fist and tightening her fingers from her index to her pinky, she fired a stream of acid into the cone shape as hard as she could.
With the hole between her clenched pink being so small, the force in which all this acid was pushed out was greatly increased, so much so that she had to tense her abs and legs to fight against the push-back. Now, as effective as this was in theory, it was a little less so in practice. Some of the acid squirted out from between her fingers, and once the liquid had made her hand wet, her fingers began to slip, and eventually, her cone shape would collapse.
She did have some workaround ideas for this though. Her first idea, was to have gloves made for her hero costume, that only exposed her palms. Since this was the main area of her hand that she secreted acid from, having a covering on her fingers would help her keep her right hand in the right shape, and thus make her move a lot more effective.
Her other idea, was to have this move be a kind of last resort move, pushing a high concentrated acid out of her hand. In her current position, she could only do this for a max of five seconds at max concentration, before burning her hands to the point she couldn't clench a fist again. Obviously, she favoured her first idea much more than the second, but any option was a good one when developing her Ultimate Move.
If she was being honest, she wasn't sure what her Ultimate Move was going to be until her Mother pitched this 'Jet Stream' idea to her the day she'd first found out about their class creating these moves. All Mina could really take credit for, was the name.
If Izuku could have his boots upgraded in the way that he had, in only a few hours, then having thin cotton gloves made for her costume wouldn't be a problem. For now though, if she could manage this Jet Stream move for more than twenty seconds at her weakest concentration, then she'd be able to last twice as long once this change to her costume had been made.
The scenarios she could use this is weren't exactly limited either. She would be able to use it on rescue missions if their victim was trapped beneath rubble, as she could focus the acid to a single spot, as opposed to a large area, which could cause harm to their rescue target. Then, it would be perfect for combat situations. With her Acid Skating ability, she had speed, and with this new move, she would have much more range than usual.
A high concentrated acid stream coming from a point travelling at the speeds she was able to would be impossible to fight against as a villain, especially when the acid is burning your skin with each passing second. It could be a lifesaver for civilians and a life ender for villains if things really got to that point, and it was one of the reasons she loved this move so much.
She had yet to tell Izuku about this move, but she had a lot of hope that when she did, or he saw it for himself, her greenette nerd would be just as excited as she is. For now, though, she wanted to progress as far as she could in the time they had today, which, as of right now, was only two more hours.
Mina would be lying if she said that a lot of the time so far, she'd been distracted by her classmate's Ultimate Moves, especially Bakugo's. 'A.P shot', a name that didn't quite live up to the lethality of this move. What bothered Mina most about it, was that it was painfully similar to her own. She wasn't sure if he'd come up with his move before her, which probably was the case, but her Jet Stream move had no inspiration from that scum bag, in any way.
Besides, their moves were set apart by the way they could be used. For example, if he used A.P shot to clear rubble, he'd end up seriously injuring, or even killing the civilian, whereas Mina would not. Besides, these were their first Ultimate Moves, so once they'd created a few more, this would be a huge issue. At least, she hoped it wouldn't.
"Having some trouble Ashido?" Midnight asked, startling the young hero from her thoughts.
"Miss Midnight... Sorry... I was distracted." The pink-skinned girl admitted, her eyes still fixed on Bakugo.
"Admiring Katsuki Bakugo are we?" Midnight asked in a low, quiet tone. Mina looked at her with a shocked frown.
"Him? No way." Mina scoffed, turning to face her and folding her arms.
"So harsh." Midnight giggled. "I'm only teasing, I know from Aizawa about you and Midoriya." She added with a smug smirk. Mina felt her cheeks heat up a little bit pushed it out of her mind quickly.
"So, what's distracting you?" The teacher asked, her tone becoming a bit more serious as he straightened herself up.
"Nothing important... I'm just watching everyone else; thinking about my costume and my move." She replied.
"What is it about your move?" Midnight continued questioning.
"Well, it's similar to Bakugo's, for one, not that it really matters to me since they can be utilised in different ways, and I'm wondering how compatible it will be with other people's moves." Mina replied.
"You're talking about hero teams, right? I can imagine you've been thinking about yourself and Midoriya forming one." Midnight said knowingly. Mina nodded, looking over to the greenette and All Might as Izuku continued throwing everything he could at his brand new Ultimate Move.
"I don't blame you, and Hero Teams are only becoming more common in today's society. However, what you have to remember, is that sometimes it's better for you to be a Solo Hero. There might be much more dangerous areas of work for Midoriya in the professional field where you might just be putting yourself in danger, and holding him back." Midnight explained. Mina let out a heavy sigh, hanging onto her senior's words.
She knew this all too well, and it was the main reason she'd never pitched the idea to her boyfriend.
"I don't mean that horribly by the way, but it could indeed be really dangerous for someone whose Quirk isn't nearly as 'brute-force' orientated as his. For now, as this is your first Ultimate Move, focus on what you want it to be, without bringing anyone else into the equation. If, later on, you still think a Hero Team is what you want to be, then ask Midoriya and then you can make some more moves for that situation." Midnight explained.
"Make sense?" She asked with a warm and kind smile. Mina took a deep breath and smiled back at the teacher.
"Yeah, thank you." The Acid Quirk user grinned.
"Good. Now then, start burning some more holes, I'll see if I can give you some pointers." She sighed, folding her arms and nodding to the large concrete wall Mina had been using for target practice. Midnight was right, Mina had a long time until she really had to make a decision for herself on creating a hero team with Izuku, but for now, concentrating on herself was most important. That's was what Izuku was doing for now, after all.
Mina fired a glance up from her phone as the coach cruised down the duel-carriage way and back towards U.A. Izuku was sitting with Todoroki, Kirishima, Uraraka and Iida, laughing and chatting away. It warmed her heart seeing how close he was getting to everyone in the class now, excluding a few that never really spoke to anyone, but she knew he'd try getting to know them too at some point.
Looking back down at her phone, Mina let out a sigh, squirming a little to get comfortable as Toru slept on her shoulder, all her weight pushing into the Acid Quirk user. There was a lot more to becoming a Hero Team than Mina had originally thought, after doing a little research.
From what she'd read on the official Pro Heroes Association website, starting your own team required taking a specially designed, two-month training course, as well as having a pre-established name, and a specific 'focus of chemistry', which basically meant that a team has to know the area of hero work they want to focus, which in hers and Izuku's case, would either be Villain Interception, or Civilian Rescue.
Letting out a sigh, Mina closed the tab and turned off her phone, pushing it back into her bag and resting her head back against the seat. There was really no point putting in all this thought right now, just as Midnight has said. There was probably a chance Izuku had zero interest in creating a Hero Team with her, no that it would affect their relationship at all.
Her Ultimate Move had found some security before their time as U.S.J had run out, and she had Midnight to thank for not only opening her eyes to the reality of the Hero Team situation but also for giving her some pointers in how to make her move stronger and more unique from Bakugo's.
Her posture was all wrong, according to the Pro Hero, and after finding that a more sideways stance gave her aim much more stability, Mina was able to use her gun than a pressurised hose. She could rotate her upper body much faster now when using Jet Stream, and by firing her acid through her right hand in short, strong bursts, she had turned herself into a sort of stationary turret of highly concentrated acid.
It was practically perfect in every way, and if she could master using this whilst acid skating around, it would be twice as effective as before. After all of that practice perfecting her new Jet Stream Ultimate Move, her hands were incredibly sore and painful to move. Unfortunately, this wasn't something Recovery Girl could fix, but it reassured Mina that Izuku was in a similar situation to her.
After going a little too overboard in how much he used his brand new move, the consequence of his legs not being used to so much physical action meant that Izuku was now hobbling around like someone whose ankle had given out in a running race. At least that meant the two of them could sit and relax together for the night.
"Hey Mina, I saw your Ultimate Move before we left, it looks awesome!" Sero spoked up, his face appearing between the gap in the seats in front.
"Thanks dude. I didn't get to see yours though, what did you come up with?" She fired back. Sero's screwed up his face for a moment and let out a chuckle.
It's still really basic; called Tape Barricade. I basically just surround whatever area is about to get hit with tape and guard myself against the attack. Right now it's not very effective but I can't deploy enough tape fast enough, but once I can, it'll be unbeatable." He explained, clenching an enthusiastic fist.
"Yeah? I'll give my Ultimate Move a run against yours some time. Then we'll see how unbeatable it really is." Mina laughed. Sero chuckled heartily, but he looked a tad nervous too, sitting up straight and turning away from her.
If there was one person's Ultimate Move that Mina really wanted to know about, it was Toru's. There was no way in the pink-skinned girl's mind, that her invisible friend could make her Quirk any stronger, unless she removed her gloves and boots from her costume, and completely disappeared. Then again, that would probably be more dangerous than anything.
It would be some interesting conversion once they all got back to the dorm, discussing their Ultimate Moves. Mina only knew a handful of her classes moves, so she was deadly curious to know what the others were, and by the way, Izuku seemed to be interrogating the members of the group he was sat in, there was no doubting that he had a much similar mindset to her.
"What up with you today? You look so out of it." Jiro perked up, pulling Mina from her thoughts.
"What? Oh... Yeah, sorry, I know... I've just been thinking about a lot of stuff." Mina responded absently.
"I'll say, it feels like the longer you and Midoriya date, the more you become like each other." She commented. Mina frowned at her friend curiously, smirking.
"What do you mean by that?" She asked.
"Well, before you started talking to him, you never used to put so much thought into things. You're looking at things with the same critical eye he does now, not that that's a bad thing." Jiro said.
"I was gonna say, I'm pretty sure that's a good thing isn't it?" Mina laughed. "What about Midori huh? What's changed about him?" The pink-skinned girl added as herself and her friend looked over to the Greenette.
"You can't tell me you haven't noticed how he's changed..." Jiro said, stunned.
"What? He's more confident now?" Mina asked. Jiro nodded.
"You've really rubbed off on him. Sometimes he still gets all flustered when people are touchy with him. Like when Uraraka or any of us girls bump into him or anything, he becomes a red-faced mess. But, when it comes to starting conversations and stuff like that, he's becoming more like you." She explained. Mina let out a chuckle and smiled. It made her feel really good inside, knowing that she'd helped Izuku develop in terms of confidence.
"I really think you two are perfect for each other, you know?" The Earphone-Jack Quirk user said with a smile. Mina nodded, watching her boyfriend with fondness in her eyes.
"I'm glad you think so." She muttered, sitting back in her seat and sighing as Toru fell onto her lap. Jiro laughed out loud and helped Mina prop the invisible girl back up before also relaxing back in her seat. It was weird, just as it always was when she thought about hers and Izuku's relationship. They'd been dating for almost two months.
She confessed to Izuku in late May, and it was now early July, so just under two months and yet it still felt like it had been longer than that for her. She was upset that they hadn't been able to celebrate these milestones, but they'd had a lot going on in this time, so it was understandable.
Maybe it was the weather throwing her off. Today had started incredibly cold for mid/late summer, but she wasn't going to complain since now it was unbearably hot. Some mornings it felt like Autumn was already upon them, and Mina liked to think this was the reason her brain was so hazy with dates. However, the simple fact of the matter, was that she just hadn't paid any attention.
Somewhere on her phone, she knew she had the date of her and Izuku's relationships beginning noted down, so maybe for month three she could do something special for him, and if he remembered, he could do something in return.
It unnerved her slightly, knowing that this much time had passed since their relationship began. Time felt like it had flown by after everything that had happened, but she didn't regret any of how she'd used this time. She had the boy of her dreams, and she'd come so far with her training. Things were never better than they were right now.
What scared her most about the time passing, was that their generations premiere was closer than they all realised, with only a few years left until they were released onto the streets as full-fledged pros. What was worse, was knowing Izuku had to fill All Might's place and become the world's number one hero. Everyone was striving to be the best, but Izuku had to be the best, at least in his mind.
As Mina has said when Izuku first told her about himself and All Might, it was an awful lot of pressure for someone of only sixteen years of age, but if anyone could handle it, Izuku could.
She couldn't think about it anymore, it was starting to stress her out, and after the intensive day she'd just had, that was the last thing she wanted. For now, she just wanted to rest. So, closing her eyes, she rested her head back on her seat again, and let out her thoughts with a sigh. There was no point thinking so far into the future. The here and now was what mattered most.
Izuku let out a heavy sigh as Class 1-A all bundled through the dorm building door all at once. It seemed that after today, pushing their Quirks to their limits to create their Ultimate Moves, all everyone wanted to do was sit down, rest their bodies and watch some TV together, and Izuku was all for it.
"Midoriya, Mina, get over here!" Kirishima called as himself, Uraraka, Iida, Todoroki and Kaminari all squeezed onto one of the sofas. Izuku let out a chuckle as he did his best to squeeze into the gap between Uraraka and the arm of the sofa. Once he'd settled, Mina took her place on his lap, careful not to knock against his sore legs as she did.
"Look at that, a perfect fit." Kaminari laughed, wheezing a little as Kirishima squeezed against him. Todoroki even joined in on the laughing too, letting out a chuckle as he made himself a bit more comfortable between Kirishima and Iida. The rest of the class did the same, some of them sharing beanbags, and others sharing the other sofa. Everyone seemed too energetic and relaxed now they were able to sit down together.
"Ahhh, this is nice." Izuku chuckled, resting his head back on the sofa as Bakugo took control of the TV, opening Youtube and searching for some more old TV shows for them to watch.
"I don't think I've seen you looking so relaxed Deku." Uraraka giggled. Izuku rolled his head to the side as he put his arms around Mina's waist.
"If I didn't have to train so much, I would do this more often." The greenette chuckled.
"Good job on your moves today everyone!" Iida suddenly exclaimed over the hubbub, before a small applause ensued. It felt good that everyone appreciated the work they'd all put in today.
It was really nice, that even after the short amount of time they'd all been living together, they'd grown into something akin to a large family. He missed his mother every day, but the hole that moving away from her had left, was slowly being filled by having his friend always around and there for him.
"I'll go make some drinks for everyone." Momo announced.
"I'll help you, Momo." Izuku perked up quickly, patting Mina's thigh to silently ask her to move.
"Nooooo, let someone else goooo." Mina complained, resting her head back against Izuku's chest heavily.
"It's only for a few minutes." Izuku responded quickly, his face turning red. Mina let out a small giggle and sighed, getting up from the sofa so he could, before taking his position on the sofa.
"Thank you, Midoriya." Momo smiled before he and the Creation Quirk user made their way out of the common room and towards the kitchen.
"I always underestimate how attached to you Mina has become." Momo giggled as they entered the kitchen, closing the door a little as they did.
R-Really? I don't really notice it anymore." Izuku admitted, awkwardly rubbing the back of his neck as Momo handed him one of the two kettles to fill with water.
"It's very sweet." Momo smiled fondly, filling her own kettle in one of the two sinks.
"Your Ultimate Move looks amazing, by the way." She added after a few seconds. Izuku felt his cheeks beginning to heat up again, and he fired his black-haired friend a smile.
"I'm glad, I wasn't quite sure if it would work as well as it did, so I'm really relieved." He said, putting the kettle back on its base and turning it on before the two of them began removing everyone's mugs from the cupboard.
"What about your move, I never had a chance to see it." Izuku said, looking over to her as he dropped tea bags into each of the mugs. Momo hesitated for a moment, before smiling.
"Lucky Bag, I decided to call it. With enough time given to me, I can create a cannon and a few shots, turning myself into something of an artillery personal." She explained. "And yes, I know the name doesn't relate to the item itself, but it's a bit of a lucky bag if I manage to have it created and able to use it in action." She added.
Admittedly, she wasn't exactly selling the move to the greenette. So far, he'd heard more of its cons than its pros.
"Surely that's really demanding for your body?" Izuku questioned.
"It is, but my training was to help me create objects faster, and make it more efficient on the number of fat cells it takes to create items. Overall, after some more training, it should take fewer resources from my body, and I'll be able to deploy it in half the time, and that goes for my Quirk in general." She explained. Izuku nodded, listening closely to every word.
"I see... I worry for the day I have to spar against you." Izuku joked with a small laugh. Momo giggled back and shook her head.
"I'm almost a thousand percent sure I should be the one feeling that way." She responded, beginning to make everyone's drinks. At one point or another, Izuku wanted to have faced off with every member of his class, just so he could say he'd done it. He wanted to feel how powerful each of their Quirks were, and get some first-hand experience in how it would feel to spar against them.
"Oh, the two trays are beside the microwave." Momo said, pointing towards the machine. Izuku nodded, before retrieving the two wooden trays and handing one to Momo. Together the two of them finished making everyone's drinks, put them carefully onto the trays, and carried them back through the kitchen and into the common room.
"Ooooh." Mineta hummed, rubbing his hands together and sitting up in his beanbag.
"Thank you, Midoriya." Todoroki smiled, accepting his mug from the greenette. Izuku smiled at his friend before continuing to dish out everyone's beverages. The relaxed atmosphere of the halls today was very welcome after the hard day they'd had, and it made Izuku feel a lot happier. Usually, things around the building felt a little heavy, and sluggish, so it was nice to have an opposite feeling this evening.
"Awww, this for me Midori?" Mina cooed, holding out her hands and accepting her heat-sensitive graffiti pattern mug. Izuku gave her a simple smile in response, handing, playing the tray, and himself, on the floor, sitting between Mina's legs and resting his head back on the sofa.
"There are a few episodes of Takeshi's Castle we haven't seen, so I'll throw that on." Bakugo announced, clicking on the next video in his list and sitting back in his beanbag, taking a noisy sip of his drink.
This feeling of relief Izuku had was entirely down to the Ultimate Move he'd successfully created today. With the strain on his arms greatly decreased, and the effectiveness of his Shoot Style even greater than he'd anticipated, he knew his chances of passing would have also gone up. This was a side of his combat that no-one really knew a whole lot about, and that would only make it stronger against whatever they may have to face.
Speaking of which, he still had a little research to do on past Provisional Licensing Exams. Going into something as major as this with no knowledge of what to expect felt like he was doing himself a massive disservice. Even if things in this exam weren't similar to the upcoming one, having at least a little info might give him a small push in the right direction.
He also wanted to be able to help some other members of his class who were really anxious about the upcoming exam. Some people he knew were worrying, were Toru, Koda, Uraraka and Jiro, but he knew there would be some more people who were much less verbal about it.
It felt a little unfair in some regards, putting everyone in this class into the same exam conditions because comparing their quirks, some of class 1-A were at a disadvantage. With people like Izuku, and other offensive type Quirk users, tasks that involved a lot of physical work would be easy, but then with people like Toru, or Jiro, who's Quirks didn't have a hand in affecting their bodies, besides aesthetically, would have it quite a bit harder.
Of course, there were areas in which these Quirks would exceed each other. For example, Toru or Koda would be much better at stealth than Izuku would, and they had all gotten into Class 1-A for being the best in their previous schools, and getting high scores in the Entrance Exam. But, even so, Izuku couldn't help but worry a little.
This wouldn't be the first time he'd been worried about unfair advantages, but every time before this, he'd been proved wrong by the one's he worried about, and he knew deep down that this time would be no different. He just knew how much potential everyone here had, and although every task created by the Heroes Association would consider Quirks of all types, he still couldn't help but feel a little anxious.
Then, the buzzing of his phone on the floor beside him brought him from his thoughts. Picking his head up from the sofa he grabbed his phone and lazily turned it on. It was a text from his mother.
*Text conv*
I.M: Hello Darling, just checking in as I haven't heard from you for a while, although I'm sure that's because you're very busy. I heard that there was a Provisional Licence Exam coming up for the Hero Schools, so I wondered if you'd heard about that as it's happening this Saturday/Sunday x
M: Hi mum. I'm really sorry I haven't called or texted much, I've been really busy here. I really miss you. Yeah, everyone's ready for the exam, and we made Ultimate Moves today, so I think I'm prepared. It's our school, and I think two others that are taking the Exam on Saturday, so we've still got three days to get ready x
I.M: How exciting! Hopefully, you can show me this new move when you come to visit! I hope Mina and your friends are all doing well and you're settling in nicely. When I get a chance I'd like to see your new room and make sure it's up to my standards of safety xx
I: It's really nice mum, don't worry. Mina is well too, she's sitting behind me right now, messing with my hair xx
I.M: How cute. Well, I'm really happy to hear everything is going well so far. It's very quiet at home when you're not here, so I hope you'll come and see me once the Exam is over, and bring Ashido too, I still want to meet her after months of being strangers xx
I: I will, I know she really wants to meet you too. I love you mum xxx
I.M: I love you too dear, have a good evening, talk soon xxx
*End of conv*
"Your mum?" Mina whispered in his ear. The feeling of her breath on his ear made him jump suddenly, and with a wave of embarrassment, he quickly looked around to make sure no-one had noticed.
"Y-Yeah... We haven't spoken since I moved out and I've been meaning to call her at some point." He responded quietly. Mina let out a small giggle.
"I'd be happy to meet her whenever you go back." She smiled, pecking her boyfriend's cheek before sitting back up straight with a sigh. I would be really nice, having Mina at his home. There was something about it that made him feel like it'd help bring them closer, even though that was more than likely not going to be the case.
He'd been desperate to finally let Mina meet his mother because he knew how excited the two of them were for that day to finally come. The only thing Izuku worried about, was for when he had to meet Mina's parents.
They hadn't really spoken about each other's families too often, but he knew Mina had younger brother alongside her parents, and he wasn't looking forward to having his awkwardness judged, as there was no doubting that her family would have the same bombastic, rambunctious personality that she did. Still, if it meant he could get to know her even better, he had no objections.
A/N: Sorry for the late and short chapter. I've been doing quite a few things compared to normal, like writing my book and getting back into digital art. However, here is Chapter 37. I'm somewhat intimidated honestly, knowing that we're just around the corner from 40 chapters. I really hope you've all enjoyed this story up unto this point, and will continue to do so! Thank you so much for all the support.
Take care!
