It was Friday. The Friday. My mom had a date. I was so excited for her. And nervous for her.

So was Teddy, apparently. She picked me up from school early- which she probably wasn't supposed to do, but that will stay between us- and we went out to get food. We brought something home for my mom, and she got home about an hour later.

She had been rather surprised when Teddy was over, but I think she needed someone else to calm her nerves.

She was so nervous.

Not only was it her first date in well over ten years, but it was her first date with a girl. So, her nerves were understandable.

"Olive!" My mom called from the end of her hallway- where her bedroom was.

"Yes?" I climbed across the couch so I could see her without really getting up.

"Come here. I need help."

I got up, "Help with what?" I asked as I walked into her bedroom, seeing Teddy sat on the end of her bed. I sat next to Teddy.

"I don't know what to wear!" My mom said with a sigh.

I had never seen her like this. It was... weird. I could tell that she liked Callie because of how nervous she was. It made me smile. She was happy.

"What are the options?" I asked, scooting further onto her bed and crossing my legs.

"Hold on" My mom walked over to her closet and started digging through stuff.

I couldn't hold back my giggle, which made Teddy look at me. She smiled. We both knew mom was crazy nervous.

She soon turned back to look at us, holding five different hangers- all dresses. I didn't even know my mom had that many dresses. We never had anything to dress fancy for.

"I'll try them all on. Then you can get the full effect."

Teddy and I both nodded our approval, and mom went across the hallway to the bathroom.

My eyes widened when she walked out in the first dress.

"Is it that bad?" My mom asked with a laugh when she noticed my reaction.

"No!" I quickly defended my facial expression. It wasn't 'bad.' It was very pretty. Very short. "It's just... a lot."

"Next!" Teddy said quickly.

I laughed, but nodded my agreement. That was not a first-date quality dress.

Mom rushed back into the bathroom.

"That was-" I started, but Teddy stopped me.

"Definitely not a first date dress. Or second date." She laughed, then we both turned our attention to mom, who walked out of the bathroom in a navy blue dress.

I had seen this one before, form fitting, formal looking. I think she wore it to my middle school graduation. And then all my friends proceeded to say she was hot. Weirdos.

"Too formal." I said.

"Yup. Next." Teddy agreed immediately.

"This is a hard to please crowd" Mom joked as she turned around to head back into the bathroom.

I looked down at my phone until I heard mom come back in.

"Ooh" I said immediately. This one was pretty. Dark red, tight at the top, but then it flared out a little. "I vote this one" I told her.

"What about the other two I need to try on?" My mom laughed.

"No, this one." I shook my head.

Teddy lifted her shoulders, glancing between mom and I.

"I like it a lot." Teddy piped in.

"It's pretty. And the red makes your eyes pop" Red also made my eyes pop. I had my moms eyes. I had my moms everything, really. It was like she cloned herself or something.

I watched as mom walked to the mirror and looked at herself. "So no to trying on the other ones?" She looked specifically at me.

I smiled and shook my head.

She smiled back, "Thanks Olive."

I stuck my tongue out and left her bedroom. Teddy could handle the rest- the hair and makeup. That really wasn't my vibe. Even though I look exactly like my mom, I did not at all acquire her femininity. Fancy hair and makeup will never be my thing. Anyone who knows me, knows that.

I just laid on the couch, watching tv. Soon enough, my mom was done getting ready, and she was visibly excited to show me how she looked. I was happy for her, really.

"What do you think?!" My mom asked, striking some silly poses to make me smile.

It worked. But, how could I not smile when she looked so happy?

"You look beautiful, Mom." I wasn't lying. She looked gorgeous. Her hair was curled, and her makeup matched her outfit. But, I also wasn't only talking about how she looked. She seemed confident and excited. That was beautiful.

"Awww." Teddy said from the kitchen.

"Shut up." I rolled my eyes.

"Thank you honey." My mom kissed my head. "Do you guys want me to order you a pizza or something? What do you want for dinner baby?"

I shrugged, glancing at Teddy.

She mouthed 'Pizza.'

I giggled. "Pizza sounds good."

My mom looked between Teddy and I. "You two..." She shook her head. "What kind of pizza?"

"Sausage, Peppers, and Onions?" I suggested. Mom and I's favorite.

"Fine by me" Teddy said.

"Okay, I'll call it in now... if I can find my-"

"It's right here." I said, handing mom her phone off the couch.

"Thanks honey!" My mom flashed me a smile as she took it. She made the call for the delivery- 30 minutes until it would come. And, as if we were in a movie where the timing was always perfect, there was a knock on the door.

"That's Callie!" My mom said quickly.

I stood up, hopping over the couch and hugging mom. "Don't be nervous."

My mom laughed, "I'll try my best." She rubbed my back.

"You look pretty." I told her, and then pulled away a little. "I love you. Have fun."

She stroked my cheek and kissed my head. "Thank you lovey. I love you most. Text me if you need anything, yeah?"

I nodded.

She smiled, pulling away. She started to walk toward the door, and I followed her a little. I just wanted to stand by the window- I needed to at least see Callie in person.

"Enjoy yourself Zona!" Teddy called out.

"See you guys later" My mom opened the front door.

Teddy and I immediately both huddled by the window like little kids.

"Callie!" I heard my mom say.

"She has flowers for her! Awww!" Teddy whispered in my ear.

"Shush. I'm trying to listen" I whispered back.

"Here, these are for you. You look gorgeous." Callie handed my mom the flowers.

"Oh thank you so much! So do you" The front door shut and Mom took the flowers.

I couldn't hear them anymore, but I watched as they walked down the sidewalk of the complex, which led to the parking lot.

"She opened the car door for mom!!" I clapped my hands together. That was sweet.

Teddy laughed, "Good, this woman seems very nice." Teddy had stepped away once the door closed, and was sitting on the couch.

I, on the other hand, stayed until the car disappeared from my sight. Once it did, I turned around. "Flowers and door opening, she seems like quite the gentle woman" I giggled.

"Your mom deserves that." Teddy tossed a pillow at me.

I caught it as I sat down on the other side of the couch, nodding. "She really does. I hope she has a good time."

"I'm sure she will."
