No, I still hadn't decided what to do.
Sorry to disappoint.
Bringing it up was a stupid idea.
I don't know why I even thought of that. Dumb, dumb, dumb. Mom wouldn't just bam tell me the truth. I knew that. Which is why I didn't end up saying anything to her.
I was just kind of going along with it. Hoping Mom would tell me.
Currently, it was Thursday. Callie was over- I don't know why. I didn't question it. I said hi and then excused myself to 'do homework.' AKA stare at my computer because all I had to do was a biology writing assignment that I was dreading. But, that stays between us.
Maybe Callie would convince Mom to tell me if I have them some time to talk. That really was my last hope. And it probably wouldn't happen.
I didn't look up when I heard a knock on my door. My door was opened. I figured it was Mom, anyway.
"It's opened, no need to knock." I muttered.
"Hey, Olivia," That wasn't Mom.
I looked up, seeing Callie. "Callie. Sorry, thought you were my mom." I flashed her a smile. She looked different- an expression I couldn't read. I was used to cheerful Callie. Maybe nervous? Worried? Concerned? I couldn't tell.
"Can I come in?" She asked.
I nodded slowly, "Is something wrong?"
"No! No, I just... wanted to ask you something." She smiled warmly.
I set my laptop to the side, seeing her walk in a little, standing awkwardly in my room. "Sure, ask away." I was a little confused. What would Callie have to ask me?
"I was just wondering..." She started, but then shook her head, staring over, "I know you don't know me too well.. and well, I'm dating your mom..." She laughed, her typical smile appearing just at the mention of my mom. "I guess what I'm trying to say is that I would like for us to get to know each other better. Maybe just you and I could hang out some time?" She bit her cheek, back to being nervous.
"I'd like that." I answered.
She smiled again, "Really?"
"Sure, why not?" I shrugged. "Sounds fun."
Callie clapped her hands together. "I'll double check my work schedule, maybe the next time I have a Sunday off?" She suggested.
I nodded, "Fine by me."
"Cool! I'm so excited! We'll have so much fun." She said, starting to walk towards the door.
"I'm excited too!" I told her, flashing her a smile. It wasn't Callie I was annoyed with. It was Mom. If anything, I was grateful that 1. Callie had been there for my mom and 2. Callie had brought this to my attention(even if it wasn't intentional).
Plus, once I got this whole thing sorted out with Mom, her and Callie would still be dating. I do need to get to know Callie more.
Spending a day with her didn't sound miserable.
Maybe she would spill about Mom. No. That was a mean thought, sorry.
I needed to sort that out with Mom. Not with Callie.
Either way, I was looking forward to spending a day with Callie. I did want to learn a little bit more about her- I only really knew what Mom told me, and what sometimes came up when I was talking to her.
But, our conversations were typically very brief. So, being able to hang out with just her would force more conversation.
I closed my laptop- who was I kidding. I definitely wasn't finishing that Biology assignment today, no matter what.
Speaking of school, actually, I remembered that I needed to ask Mom if she could pick me up from my friends house tomorrow night- we had a project to finish for English class.
Usually I would just walk, but this particular friend, Juliana, lived on the opposite side of town. Mom wouldn't let me walk even if I wanted to. Which, I didn't want to, anyway.
I sighed, then got up and went towards the living room.
"I think that's a little too crazy Cal... Olive!" Mom smiled when she saw me.
"Can you pick me up from Juliana's house tomorrow? We have that project... I was just gonna walk home with her after school, so I just need you to pick me up." I leaned on the back of the couch, looking over at Mom.
"Yeah!" Mom nodded quickly. "I get off work at 4:30. What time do you think you'll be done?"
"Doesn't she live right near your work?" I asked.
"Mhm."
"You can pick me up on your way home?" I suggested. I didn't want her to have to drive out twice. I knew that because my friend lived on the other side of town, it was a rather inconvenient drive.
"That works." Mom smiled.
"Okay... thanks, Mom."
"Of course! Callie said you said yes about going out with her?" Mom looked very excited.
Callie had a matching excited smile on her face.
I stood up to my full height, heading for the kitchen. While I was out here, I might as well get a snack, too. "Yup." I answered.
"That's fun. I'm sure you two will have a blast!"
Mom was probably so excited about it. She probably was the one to suggest just the two of us hanging out in the first place.
"Yeah, it'll be fun" I agreed. It would be fun. Callie seemed fun, interesting.
"Next Sunday, by the way, I checked!" Callie piped in.
I nodded. "Sounds good."
She smiled at me. "Let me know if there's anything you wanna do."
"I'm cool with whatever." I shrugged, grabbing a bowl from the cabinet.
I stayed quiet as I searched the pantry, eventually finding what I was looking for- the goldfish. For some reason, I was really wanting goldfish today. I got lucky we still had some. They were Mom's favorite. I filled the bowl, and then put the bag away, turning to go back in my room.
"Olivia?" Mom asked.
"Hm?" I stood in the doorway of my room.
"Heading back in your room already?" Mom tilted her head at me.
"Yeah..." I closed my bedroom door this time, not really giving her an explanation. I settled on calling one of my friends. Something else to do.
