Callie has been spending a lot of time at the apartment.
I think it was good for Mom. Mom seemed a little less stressed when she was around. I figured it was a lot for her- the whole thing with Dad.
When I walked out of my room, Mom and Callie quickly pulled away from each other.
"You guys make it so obvious." I mumbled when they both looked at me.
Both of their cheeks turned bright pink, and Mom scooted further away from Callie on the couch.
"It's not like I care." I shook my head, laughing.
Mom giggled too, but Callie was a little more embarrassed.
I filled up my water bottle, much less bothered by it then they were. Sure it was gross, but I would be silly to act like it was crazy. They're a couple.
After a few moments of awkward silence, Callie spoke up.
"Liv, when you're done can I talk to you both?"
I turned to look at Callie. "Uh, sure." I screwed the cap back on my water bottle and stood behind the couch, to the left of Mom. She was still further away from Callie than she had been when I first came out.
"Sit down, Olive" Mom patted the space next to her.
I did so. Mom smiled at me, and then we both looked at Callie expectantly.
Callie laughed, almost nervously. "I wanted to invite you both to my family Thanksgiving dinner..." She paused for a moment, as if thinking of how to say what she wanted to say next. "It's uh. In Florida-"
I knew the second she said that my eyes lit up. Florida. We had to go. Had to.
"That's where most of my family is. It would be with my whole extended family- or at least most of them. I would really like for you guys to come. But, I get that it's a far trip, so it's ok if you don't want to." Callie finished.
"I wanna go to Florida." I said quickly- I hadn't really though about anything else. The chance to go to Florida was dangling over my head. I wanted to go so badly.
Mom hadn't said anything.
Callie looked even more nervous.
"Earth to Mom?" I asked, a giddy smile on my face.
"Sorry I uh..." Mom laughed a little.
"Wait." Callie's face filled with realization. "You probably want to be with your family here for the holiday."
Mom shook her head, "No, no,"
We didn't have family here. I was pretty sure Mom and I were doing nothing on Thanksgiving, anyway.
I looked at Mom, "We have nowhere to be. We should go!"
"Miss grumpy-on-all-holidays doesn't seem so grumpy now." Mom teased.
I just smiled. She knew why. Florida.
Mom looked at Callie, "We don't have anywhere else to be, stop looking all upset." She smiled at Callie, who perked up a little. "How long do I have to think about it? When will I need to get plane tickets by if we come?"
I started bouncing in my seat.
"Olivia."
Callie laughed, "Don't worry about plane tickets. You can let me know whenever you decide."
Mom raised her eyebrow. "We wouldn't drive, would we?"
Callie shook her head, "Oh no. That would be a terrible drive. I'm telling you, just don't worry about plane tickets."
"Well then how would we get there?"
"... an airplane, Ari." Callie said matter-of-factly.
"I have to be honest you're being confusing." I chipped in.
Callie sighed, "My parents will cover the cost of travel, they always do that since it is the only time we have to go to Florida."
Mom shook her head, "If we come, I'm paying the cost of the tickets. When would we leave?"
"We would travel on Wednesday, and stay in a hotel. I am planning on leaving early Saturday morning, because I really can't take too much time off work." Callie dropped the whole plane ticket thing. She probably knew Mom was stubborn by now.
"Okay..." Mom nodded slowly.
"Totally not something you have to decide now. I just wanted to throw it out there, I would love to have you both there." Callie smiled brightly.
"Where in Florida is it?" I asked, very hung up on the fact that I could be going to Florida.
"Just outside of Miami!"
"No way! Mom pleaseeee can we go?" I looked up at Mom.
Callie laughed a little.
"Olive."
"I know I know, you have to think about it." I looked at Callie again. "Do you think we would have time to go to the beach? Would it be hot or cold? Like... could we go swimming in the ocean?"
"Uh, we could squeeze in a beach trip! It'll definitely be warm enough to swim."
I fist pumped, bouncing excitedly. "That's so cool. I've always wanted to go to Florida! This'll be great!"
Mom laughed, "You're getting ahead of yourself, sweetie."
"Mom. You can't say no to Thanksgiving in Florida. Swimming in the ocean in November. Come on. That's awesome!"
"It is awesome." Mom nodded her agreement.
"So we can go?" I looked hopefully at Mom.
"I did already take Wednesday Thursday and Friday off of work." Mom didn't quite answer my question.
I waited.
Mom sighed, "Most likely, yes, we will go, Olivia."
I bounced more and hugged Mom tightly. "Yes!" I cheered, hearing both Mom and Callie laughing at my excitement. "This is gonna be the best Thanksgiving ever."
"Someone's happy."
"Duh! Mom. Florida." I exaggerated. To me, this was a huge deal.
"I know, honey." Mom laughed.
"You know how bad I've always wanted to go to Florida. The beaches and the palm trees and the weather." I rambled.
"All great things." Mom nodded slowly, running a hand through my hair. She looked at me. Her smile grew, her eyes getting all happy.
I knew she was going to say yes when Callie asked, but looking at her in that moment, I knew we were going. She was happy. I was happy. Callie was very excited.
Maybe holidays didn't have to suck that much.
