Airports are pretty cool.
In movies, they make airports out to be this hassle of a place where you end up getting stranded for days because of a delayed flight. Or someone gets broken up with in the airport and cries. Or they like... lose their kid in the airport or something crazy.
But, between the hundreds of restaurants and the crazy-cool moving side walks that allow you to walk like 50 miles per hour-I was having a pretty good time. There were so many people. And they all had places to be, plans for the upcoming holiday. I was fascinated.
It could've also been the fact that I had a coffee. Mom barely let me have coffee, but she said we would both need it so we didn't fall asleep checking our bags in.
Sure, it was pretty early, but I had a lot of energy. We were going to Florida. I was so beyond excited. And just all around grateful. I knew this was a big deal- my first time out of the state. It meant a lot that Mom was taking me out of the state. Especially to Florida, of all other states.
"Olivia!" Mom called out. I turned my head, but I couldn't see her or Callie. There was a huge group of people that had somehow appeared between us. I stepped off the moving sidewalk, seeing multiple people get off before Callie and Mom even came into sight. Maybe I had got a little ahead of myself.
"Jeez, girl. Remind me to never give you coffee again. You're like running." Mom said when they finally caught up. She took a deep breath, as if catching her breath.
Callie laughed, shaking her head.
"I feel like I need to tie a rope to your waist just so I can keep track of you." Mom continued.
"Ok, ok. I'll slow down, I swear." I giggled. I have to admit, I was going a little fast. But, I was so beyond eager. Not only was the airport insanely cool, but I wanted to get on that plane. I wanted to be in Florida already.
"You better. Walking that fast you might zip right past our gate. Do you remember the number you're looking for or are you having too much fun with the moving sidewalks?" Mom looked at me, a goofy smile was on her face. She was just happy I was happy.
"Number 42. And I am very much having fun." I smiled.
"They are pretty fun, I always used to love running on them as a kid." Callie admitted.
"See!" I gestured to Callie, tilting my head at Mom. "Callie gets it. They're so fun."
"You're fourteen-years-old." Mom laughed.
"Oh, I would totally run on them right now. But people would probably get scared if they saw a full blown adult running on the airport moving sidewalks." Callie said, making all three of us laugh.
We got on the next moving sidewalk, and off I went. It wasn't intentional. The fun of it just got the best of me. It felt so trippy- the only other time I had moved this fast was in a car. It was just a cool experience, I guess. I watched as the gate numbers passed by, determined to not miss it, as I knew Mom would never stop teasing me about it.
Eventually we reached the 40s, and I waited for Mom and Callie at the end of the moving sidewalk. Mom was shaking her head in amusement when they finally caught up. Somehow, again, people had gotten between us.
"You're going to crash the second we sit down, I swear. I didn't know caffeine would make you this hyper."
"I'm not hyper. I'm excited. We're going to Florida! Gate 42 is over there" I pointed toward the big number 42.
Maybe I was a little hyper. I could feel the caffeine coursing through my veins. All that extra energy. Mom was probably right in saying I would crash. It felt like a sugar high, but heightened. That mixed with my excitement, I probably was acting a little more crazy than I was aware of.
"Perfect. And... we're 20 minutes early. Wow." Callie said as we all walked toward the gate.
"The plane leaves in 20 minutes?!" I asked.
Mom shook her head, "No. People start getting on it in 20 minutes. If there aren't any delays. And then we have to wait- we probably won't be flying for almost another hour."
"Oh. Why does it take so long?"
Both Callie and Mom shrugged.
We sat at the gate for a while. I took time to look around, noticing all the people. Some people were rushing, some acting like they had all the time in the world. The little kids were running across the moving sidewalks- like I wanted to do so badly. I just speed-walked, though. Still efficient, and fun.
When they finally called us up to board the plane, a lot of that pent up energy had faded into tiredness. But that didn't take away from the fact that I was insanely excited.
Callie showed our boarding passes to the person, and we started walking through a hallway. We turned a corner, and I saw the plane.
"This is so cool." I mumbled, just so Mom and Callie could hear.
Mom laughed a little. Callie just smiled.
"We have to find our seats..." Callie said. She walked ahead of us, looking at the numbers.
Eventually she stopped, and I kind of bumped into her. I hadn't been paying attention.
"Whoops." I giggled.
Callie smiled, "We have these three. Do you wanna sit by the window?" She looked at me.
I nodded quickly, my eyes lit up. I definitely wanted to sit by the window.
"Go ahead."
I climbed all the way to the window seat, watching Mom and Callie put their carry on bags in the space above the seats. Then Mom sat next to me, and Callie all the way on the outside.
"Do we get airplane food?" I whispered.
Callie nodded, "Lunch, yeah. We'll be flying for almost six hours."
"Fun!" I smiled excitedly, leaning back in my seat.
I'm just a few short hours, we would be in Florida. Florida.
