The next morning, Aria and Lexi came to see us at the hotel.
We were leaving early tomorrow morning.
All of us ended up going down to the pool, as Lexi was eager to swim. The second we got down there she had put her arm floaties on and Aria sent her into the pool.
I sat in a beach chair, trying to soak up the sun. I knew I wouldn't be seeing a lot of sun back at home for a while with the winter months coming up.
Mom Callie and Aria were all sitting around a table. But, I could hear them talking.
"I'm so sorry about yesterday. That was horrible of them- I promise they did not hear the end of it from Michael and I all night. Even my dad was pissed." Aria directed to Mom.
"It's not your fault. Some people are just..." Mom started.
"Rude. Horrible." Callie finished.
"Yes. And, because they don't have the balls to apologize, I will apologize on their behalf." Aria said.
"I'm so pissed." Callie said. "That was so incredibly embarrassing. And for them to talk to you that way? I feel like I could scream at them for hours and still be just as angry."
"Babe," I heard Mom say. I had never heard her call Callie that.
"Sorry I'm just..."
"It's understandable." Mom said quietly.
"Trust me," Aria laughed. "I yelled at them. A lot. They'll never pull that shit again. Excuse my mouth."
Callie laughed, then, "Thank you."
"I got your back." Aria said. "And yours, too." I assumed she meant my mom.
"Thank you, Aria." Mom said.
I glanced over at them. Mom was smiling.
I was glad Callie's sister was so nice. It made something good come out of all the bad.
There was suddenly a big splash in the pool, and then Lexi giggled.
"Having fun, Lex?" Aria asked.
The little girl nodded eagerly.
The water looked refreshing. I decided to go over- at least sit at the edge of the pool. I was in a swimsuit, so if I decided I wanted to go in, I could.
Almost immediately after I sat down, legs in the pool, Lexi swam over to me.
"Olivia!" She laughed. "Are you gonna come in?"
I smiled at her. "I dunno." I shrugged.
She held onto the ledge of the pool, right next to me. "You gotta come in!"
"Maybe." The water was a little cold. I hadn't decided yet. I glanced back at Mom, Callie and Aria. I couldn't hear them anymore.
"My mommy says that my tia loves your Mommy." Lexi said.
I looked back at her. "Yeah?"
"Yup!" Lexi nodded, as if proud of herself for remembering that information. "Like my mommy and my daddy!"
"Uh, kind of. Yeah." I didn't know what to say to her. She was four. But, she also seemed like a pretty smart four-year-old.
"Do you have a Daddy, too?" She was bouncing in the water.
I kicked my feet a little. "Not really." I tried not to look upset by the question. Again- four year old. She didn't know any better.
"Oh." She looked at the sky in thought. After some quiet, she looked at me again. "So do you have two Mommies? My mommy said sometimes you have two mommies or two daddies. Or you have a mommy and a daddy. Like me!" She pointed to herself. I could see the little wheels in her brain turning as she spoke.
"I just have one Mom." I answered.
"Oh. Cool! How old are you? I'm 4. Mommy said you go to big girl school."
I laughed, "I'm 14."
"Wow. That's a big number." Lexi looked fascinated.
"Only 10 years older than you." I laughed more at her clear fascination of my age.
"That's a lot!" She giggled, bouncing in the water again.
"I guess so, yeah." I shrugged.
Her smile was big and bright. "I'm in kindergarten. I turn 5 on December 16th!" She told me proudly.
"Wow! That's so soon! How do you like kindergarten?" I entertained it- she was clearly very much wanting me to talk to her. I didn't mind. She was cute, and a little bit silly.
"I like it! We do art and reading and spelling." She rambled.
"I love art!" I told her.
"Me too!" She got more excited at that.
"Do you like to draw?"
"Yeah! And I like to color! And paint. Painting is my favorite. That's what we do in art class!" Lexi's smile grew.
I smiled back. "That's awesome!"
I did end up getting in the pool with Lexi for a while. And she loved it. She was beyond excited.
I thought it was sweet, that she liked me so much.
But, I eventually got way too cold and got out of the pool.
Mom smiled and stood up when she saw me, getting me my towel.
"Thanks Mom." I said, taking it and wrapping myself up.
"Lexi adores you Olivia. I hope she wasn't being obnoxious." Aria said.
I shook my head, "No not at all." I laughed. "She was telling me all about the kindergarten drama."
Aria laughed, "That girl. She's too much."
"She's funny," I said with a smile. Then, I bent down to wring out my hair.
"Too cold?" Mom asked.
"Totally. Freezing." I nodded.
She smiled, "It was nice of you to hang out with her. I'm sure that made her day. The cool older girl hanging out with her in the pool." She whispered to me.
I laughed. " 'Cool' "
Mom kissed my head. "Once you're dry, more sunscreen, please. I don't want you getting burnt."
"Mom."
"Olivia."
"How am I supposed to get a tan?"
"You can still get a tan with the sunscreen on, Olive." Mom laughed.
I jokingly sighed, rewrapping the towel around my body. My bathing suit was still mostly soaked.
"Hey, Olivia?" Aria asked as Mom sat back down.
"Yeah?" I stepped closer to the table, between Mom and Callie's chairs.
"I just wanted to apologize for yesterday- how my family acted was unacceptable. It won't happen again. I hope your feelings weren't hurt." Aria said, her voice sweet and sincere.
That was really sweet of her- to apologize to both Mom and I.
Of course my feelings had been hurt. Only because I knew Mom was upset.
"I know it's not your fault. But, thank you." I replied.
Aria smiled at me, and I smiled back.
Mom squeezed my arm gently.
Besides a few mishaps- Callie's family was very nice. Especially Aria. And Lexi, too.
I was glad. This was good.
