It was the first day of school since winter break. A new year.
Over break, Mom had mentioned the idea of living with Callie. Very briefly. But, she mentioned it.
It was bothering me a lot more than I would expect it to. Not in an 'I don't wanna live with Callie' type way, but more like an 'aren't they moving kind of fast- this is a lot of change' type way.
I had decided today that I really needed someone other than Mom or Mom's friends to talk to about this. I needed Isa. During lunch, I texted Isa to meet me outside, in the courtyard.
I was barely waiting for 30 seconds when she got there.
"Liv-Liv!" She hugged me.
"Isa!" I hugged back. "How was your break?"
"It was awesome. The beach was so relaxing! How was yours?" Isa had gone to the Bahamas for the week between Christmas and New Years. So cool.
"It was good. I gotta tell you something." I leaned against the brick wall of the school building.
"Ooh spill!" She said, smiling.
I laughed. "Well, you know how my parents split up. Almost a year ago now." Isa had officially found that out after the articles came out about my dad. While I was sure she had assumed- she knew I moved and everything- I never had brought it up before then. Sore subject, I guess. But, after the articles, I had to tell her that I wasn't living with him. She was worried. I really hadn't been telling her a lot at all, I realized. That wasn't good.
"Yeah." She nodded.
"A couple months later, my mom started dating this girl," I just said it casually. But I paused because I knew Isa was bound to have a reaction.
She didn't let me down: "Your Mom's gay?!"
I laughed, nodding. "Uh, yeah. She is."
"Cool. What's wrong with her girlfriend?" Isa was clearly overly interested now.
I liked that she didn't care. Like me. I didn't expect her to be weirded out by it, though. Isa was cool. I liked that about her.
"There's nothing wrong with Callie."
"That's her name? Callie?"
"Mhm."
"You gotta have some type of problem with Callie." Isa said, making me laugh.
"I don't have a problem with her. She's really nice. And my mom really likes her. Like... really likes her." I scrunched my face up.
"Ok..." She was waiting for more.
"We spent Christmas with her. And Thanksgiving. And now my mom said she wants to live with her." I said, letting out a sigh of relief. Finally someone else knew. I had held that in for too long.
"Oh wow." Isa's eyes got big.
"Yeah."
"So are you? Moving in with her?"
"Um. I dunno. My mom like barely mentioned it. But, if she said it, I know that means she's been thinking about it a lot."
Isa nodded. "You don't want to, though?"
"It's not that.."
"Then what is it?"
I shrugged, "It's only been like... since September. Barely 5 months."
"Too quick." Isa concluded.
I nodded.
"Well, you gotta tell your Mom that. Otherwise you guys will just move right in."
"I guess. Do you think she was serious serious though?"
"How'd she bring it up?" Isa crossed her arms over her chest, tilting her head at me.
"She was like... 'maybe soon we'll be living with Callie and we won't have to wait for her to drive over here' because we were waiting for Callie to get to the apartment before we went somewhere."
"Maybe it was a joke?" Isa suggested.
"I don't think so."
"Did she say anything else? Did you say anything?"
"I didn't know what to say! What do you say to that?"
"Dude, I don't know." Isa laughed.
"Exactly," I laughed a little. "She just stayed quiet after that. I think she felt awkward. And then she hasn't brought it up since."
"That's all she said and you're still thinking about it?"
"Uh, yeah." I said. Obviously I was still thinking about it. "She literally said she wants to move in with her girlfriend of like 5 months. That's kind of something big."
"If she was serious about it, don't you think she would have said it differently?"
"I dunno. She's awkward like that. She probably made herself uncomfortable."
Isa giggled, "For real though, I don't think you gotta worry about it, Liv. I wouldn't even bring it up."
"But moving in."
"It's not like she started packing bags."
I laughed at that. Imagine.
"If she did that, I'd be worried. But, I bet she forgot about it."
"Yeah, maybe."
The bell rang. Gross. Time for class.
"You're in 41 right?"
I nodded.
"I'm in 58. I'll walk you."
Isa and I started walking into the building.
"For the record, I think you're right about it being too quick. Did they know each other for a long time before?"
"Nope. Literally met and then started dating."
"Yeah. That's quick. I'm sure your mom knows that too. She's really nice, though? Callie?" Isa looked at me as we walked through the crowded halls.
"She's cool," I said with a nod. Callie was cool. I liked her. I just needed to warm up to the whole moving in thing.
Talking to Isa was good, though. I think that made it more real. Someone else knew.
"There's me." I said as we reached the doorway of my classroom.
"Cool, see ya?" Isa smiled.
I smiled back, "See ya!" We fist bumped- something we did all the time. And then Isa disappeared into the crowd of sweaty teens trying to make it to class on time.
I walked into the classroom and sat at my normal seat.
I was proud of myself. For talking to Isa. For getting it out. I had been so worried to do that. But, Isa was the perfect person to talk to. I was glad I had a friend like her. She got me.
