Mom hugged me for about the 50th time today.
"I can't believe my baby girl is 15."
"Mom." It is my birthday. If you can't tell. Mom is insanely emotional- like always. She says I grew up too fast.
I personally didn't want to make a big stink about my birthday. 15 isn't really a big deal. 16 is the big deal- being able to drive.
Mom invited Callie over, though, and the three of us were having dinner. I was fine with it. I didn't mind.
"Olivia" Mom mimicked. "You need to stop getting older. Next year you'll be driving. Oh god." Mom made a sad expression.
I giggled, "You're dramatic."
She squeezed me tighter. "It's ok, you'll always be my little baby."
"Except I'm not little. Or a baby."
"Don't make me cry!" Mom pouted.
"Ok, ok." I laughed, Mom was a little crazy.
She kissed my head. "I love you. Have I told you how beautiful you are?" She pulled away, smiling proudly.
"You have. Thank you." It wasn't like I was wearing anything fancy. Just jeans and a long sleeve shirt. But, Mom said I was beautiful no matter what I was wearing. "And, I love you too." I added on.
She kinda just looked at me until the doorbell rang. "I'll get it!" I ran off.
"Birthday girl!!!" Callie cheered when I opened the door. She had balloons and a bag in her hand. "Happy birthday, Liv! How does it feel to be 15?!" She hugged me.
I hugged back, "Thanks. It feels the same." I said with a laugh as she stepped inside.
"Yeah, that's how it always is. Here, these are for you." Callie handed me the balloons and the bag.
"Thank you so much!" I said.
"Of course!"
"Come in here guys!!" Mom called out.
We both laughed, and then walked toward the kitchen. Callie and Mom greeted each other with a kiss. Still ew. Kidding. I guess it was sweet. I guess.
"Dinner is almost ready," Mom said as they pulled away.
I set the bag from Callie on the counter, letting go of the balloons so they hit the ceiling.
"It smells good in here." Callie said.
"Ravioli alfredo. My favorite. Mom's alfredo is to die for." Mom made the best alfredo. Maybe just because she's my mom and I love her cooking. But, still.
"I can't wait to try it!" Callie smiled happily.
Mom took it upon herself to start a whole conversation about baby Olivia. And me as a kid. Any time she could talk about me, she would. So, my birthday just made that even more crazy. I'm not complaining- it's one of her many ways of showing how much she loves me. And it's sweet.
That conversation carried itself into the living room, and lasted the whole meal.
"Oh! And on Olivia's second birthday, she insisted on a Lightning McQueen cake. No clue why- I think we only watched that movie once. But, red frosting and a toddler don't mix. Her face was stained so badly" Mom laughed. "I probably have pictures! It was the funniest thing!" She grabbed her phone, searching for the photos.
It was quiet for a moment.
"Here!" Mom showed a picture of baby me, white-blonde hair and blue eyes, red frosting all over my hands and face.
"Adorable. But, I already know that was horrible to get off." Callie laughed.
I just smiled. I liked hearing these stories- because I didn't remember it- but, I didn't know what to say.
"She was the cutest little munchkin. Still is!" Mom winked at me.
I rolled my eyes playfully.
Mom scrolled through her phone a little. "Olive at the beach!" She turned her phone again, to show a photo that was zoomed in on just me. Mom was holding me. I reached forward and zoomed out.
"I really love this picture." I said. Mom looked so young. She is so young. I liked seeing my mom as a teenager- when she was my age. I look so much like her- those could easily pass as photos of me.
"You had a baby face!" Callie exclaimed, looking at Mom. "So cute. Liv looks crazy similar to you."
"I was a baby. And she is totally a mini me," Mom laughed. "This is one of my favorite pictures, too, Liv." She said to me.
"And this is Liv when I helped Teddy get ready for senior prom! She insisted on wearing makeup, just like Teddy."
Callie and I laughed at the picture.
"And-"
"Mom, we get it. You're sad I'm fifteen" I giggled.
"Yes! I am!" Mom put her phone down. "My baby girl."
"I'm not a baby!!" I said for the billionth time.
"You're my baby." Mom smiled.
I glanced at Callie, who smiled. I rolled my eyes teasingly.
"You should open the gift I got you, Liv!" Callie said, saving me from the never ending baby photos.
I smiled, getting up and grabbing the bag off the counter. I sat back down on the couch.
"Go ahead!" Mom said.
I pulled the card from the bag, smiling when I saw Callie had handwritten a message at the bottom.
It read:
Happiest 15th birthday Olivia! I hope you have the most wonderful day - Callie
In a near-perfect cursive handwriting.
"Aw, thank you." I smiled at her, folding the card again and placing it next to me. I pulled out two small boxes from the heap of tissue paper. I opened the first box, which had a package of rings- from Aeropostale- five rings, one for each finger. "Ooh these are nice!! Thank you so much!"
Rings were my favorite type of jewelry to wear- and these rings were very pretty. I was excited about them.
The next box had a gift card- to Hollister.
"I wasn't sure if you liked Hollister, hopefully I made a good choice." Callie laughed nervously.
"It's great! Thank you so much!" I got up and gave her a hug. It was insanely kind of her to think of me- even that just made my day. She was really nice- not only to Mom but to me. It felt like she cared about me.
"Of course!" Callie smiled as we pulled away.
I smiled too. I was happy- it was a good birthday.
