I rushed to get dressed. It was Wednesday of my spring break- Mom said that Callie was coming over. I didn't know why, but I was still in my pajamas, since I didn't have plans for today. So, I figured I should look a little bit presentable.
I settled on ripped jeans and a black tank top. I was brushing my hair when I heard her knocking on the door.
I rushed out, hairbrush still in hand. My hair wasn't quite brushed yet.
"Hi. Sorry, I was in bed. Mom told me you were coming like... five minutes ago." I breathed out, somehow out of breath.
Callie laughed. "It's ok. Go ahead and get ready."
I smiled and then rushed back into my room. I finished brushing my hair, and then went into the bathroom and brushed my teeth, put on deodorant, and did whatever else I needed to get ready. I tried to be quick.
"Ok." I said when I came out of the bathroom, Callie was leaning against the back of the couch, on her phone.
She looked up at me and smiled. "You wanna go to the fair at the mall?" She asked, slipping her phone into her pocket.
"Sure!" I returned the smile. I had gone Sunday night with my friends- but, I hadn't gone with Callie. Sounded fun. It might be a little weird- everyone from my school will probably be there. But I really don't mind. Callie wanted to hang out with me.
"Ooh yay!!" She jumped a little, making me laugh. "Have you eaten?"
I shook my head, "I kinda just woke up." It was almost noon. But, it was spring break, I was allowed to be lazy.
"Should we stop somewhere? Or do you want fried dough for breakfast?" Callie said with a laugh.
I giggled. "I can make waffles here, if that's cool?"
"Sounds good."
"You want anything? We have..." I opened the fridge. "Fruit. Leftover Chicken Parmesan. Cold cuts." I giggled. "Mom and I were gonna go grocery shopping tomorrow."
Callie laughed, "I'm alright, thank you."
I nodded, opening the freezer and getting out the box of frozen waffles. "Not even a waffle?" I glanced at Callie.
She shrugged, "I'll have a waffle."
I smiled, getting out three- two for me, one for her. I popped them in the toaster oven.
A little butter, a whole lot of syrup, and some waffles later, Callie and I were off to the fair.
"Are you afraid of heights?" Callie asked as she searched for a parking spot. It was very clear that a lot of people wanted to go to the fair today.
"Uh. A little bit? I don't know."
Callie laughed, "How do you not know?"
"Sometimes I like the rides that go crazy high and upside down, sometimes I don't." I shrugged.
"Ah. What are you feeling today?" She said as she found a parking spot.
"Hm. I dunno. Are you afraid of heights?"
"Nope."
"The one that brings you up crazy high and drops you?"
"Love that one!" Callie turned off the car. "Ready?"
I nodded.
We walked through the parking lot, pointing out the biggest rides- as those were the ones we could see. Callie bought us wristbands so we could go on any rides we wanted, and then we started to look for our first ride.
"Liv!" I heard someone say.
I turned around, "Hey Chloe!" I waved at her, and she waved back, then we kept walking our separate ways. I looked at Callie, "She goes to school with me." I explained. I knew I would be seeing a lot of people from school here- whichever ones didn't go away on vacation, that is.
Callie nodded. "We could also play games!" Callie said as we passed through the section of games. "Do you wanna win... a huge stuffed monkey?" She laughed.
I giggled. "I don't know what I'd do with that."
"Yeah, me either."
"Ooh! Can we go on the Scrambler? That's Mom and I's favorite ride ever." I said as we approached the ride. The line wasn't very long, either.
"Sure!" Callie nodded, and we got into the line.
The people before us went, and I laughed as the ride spun around, forcing the people in the seats to smash into each other.
Soon enough, Callie and I picked out our seat.
"Got it?" Callie asked.
I nodded.
"Sit on this side so I don't smoosh you." We both laughed, and I scooted to the left, so Callie could sit next to me, on the right. "I threw up on this ride once when I was a kid." Callie said as the ride operator began to walk around and make sure everyone was secured in their seats.
"Gross!" I made a face.
"I won't throw up today!" She said through a laugh.
"I hope not. That's nasty." I said, shaking my head in amusement. We got quiet when the person came to make sure we were secured, both laughing when they walked away.
"Ooh they're gonna start it!" I said excitedly, placing my hands on the bar in front of us. Sure enough, the ride began. It launched you to one side, slowed, then launched you to the next. I barely had enough time to stop pressing all my weight against Callie's side. Then, it got progressively faster, and I just submitted to the fact that I couldn't keep myself from falling into her- the wind was too strong.
We were both laughing, Callie saying the occasional "Oh my god!" Which just made me laugh more.
The ride slowed, and I peeled myself away, the resistance of the wind finally lessening. My hair was all over my face. I started to comb through it.
"That was fun!" I said as we came to a stop.
Callie laughed, "And very fast."
"Well, that's what makes it fun!" I smiled brightly. "Now we get to walk around the fair with knotty hair," I said, still trying to finger comb my hair. I was probably just making it worse, though.
"That we do." Callie jumped out of the seat, and I followed. "Where to next?"
"What's your favorite ride?"
"Hm. I like the Avalanche."
"That one next? That's one of my favorites too!"
"I thought you said you weren't sure about heights?" Callie asked as we started walking.
"It's not even high." I shrugged. "It'll be fun!"
"Ok, ok. Avalanche it is."
And, off we went.
