I had spent my Saturday afternoon bowling with my friends.
Forgetting about Dad.
Isa's Mom was nice enough to bring me back home. I noticed Callie's car was still parked in front of the apartment. She had stopped by this morning, right before I left.
The apartment was quiet when I opened the front door. Oddly quiet. But, they were in here. Both of their cars were out front. I was confused.
"Mom? I'm home. Did you get my text? Isa's Mom brought me home." I called out, closing the door behind me. I started to walk toward the kitchen. I didn't see Mom or Callie in the kitchen or living room. What the heck?
Mom's bedroom door opened, "Hi honey. Sorry, I didn't have my phone. I'll message her and thank her." Mom spoke breathlessly, combing her hair with her fingers. She had a t-shirt and shorts on. Different from what she was wearing earlier. She came over and hugged me tightly.
I looked her up and down, and then peeked into her bedroom. Unmade bed. I didn't see Callie from the angle I was at, though.
"Gross." I muttered under my breath. I kind of hoped Mom didn't hear me, but I also kind of hoped she did. Because, what the heck?
"Where is my pho- what?" Mom looked over at me, her eyebrows crinkled in confusion. She hadn't heard me.
"Nothing. Your phones on the counter." I pointed to it, deciding not to say anything. She smiled and went over to grab her phone.
"Hey Liv!" Callie came out of Mom's room, her voice just as breathless- also combing her fingers through her hair. She had also done an 'outfit change', apparently.
"Oh my god." I squeezed my eyes shut.
"Just texted her!" Mom obviously hadn't heard me. Good. I didn't want to make it any more awkward than it already felt. "How was bowling?"
I shook the thought from my head. "Bowling was fun. I won the second game. By luck, really." I answered.
"That's great!" Mom smiled. "You free to talk?" She leaned against the back of the couch.
"Sure." I shrugged.
"Okay! So, Callie and I were talking," Mom looked at Callie, who just smiled. "We both really want your input, too. On.. ya know, where we move, when we move. If you'd like to.. talk with us about it."
I was trying so hard to not draw my conclusions about what I had just seen. It was hard not to, though. Ugh. Gross. I had to not think about it.
"Uh, yeah. That's nice of you guys." I said. I didn't really know what to say.
Mom smiled excitedly.
Clearly she hadn't caught on to how obvious they both had just been. Or, she simply didn't care that I knew.
"Is this something you feel ready to talk about now? Or do you need some time?" Mom asked.
"I'm good. What do you wanna talk about?" I sat on the couch, and so did Mom and Callie.
Mom looked at Callie, as she had been rather quiet.
"Obviously you guys have a place, and I have a place. So, we could very easily move into one of each others places." Callie paused, as if to let me process. "Or, we could look into getting a new place. Apartment, maybe even a house. A house might be a stretch right now, though." Callie finished.
Mom nodded her agreement to Callie's statements.
"I don't wanna move towns." I looked at Mom.
She smiled reassuringly, as if telling me it's ok to say whatever I want to say.
"I like my school and... my friends. I don't wanna be the new girl three-quarters of the way through freshman year." I elaborated.
"Okay, so we stay in the district." Mom said matter-of-factly.
I smiled. I liked being heard.
"That's cool with me." Callie agreed.
"Do you want to stay here?" Mom asked.
I shrugged, that I didn't really care about. "Whatever you guys think. Whatever is easier and just... better. I don't mind."
"Well, we want your input." Callie said.
"I dunno. I wouldn't mind moving. Or staying here. I mean... yeah. I dunno." I paused. "What are you guys thinking?"
Mom and Callie looked at each other.
"Either Callie moves in here, or we rent.. probably an apartment." Mom answered. "Would you like to stay here though? Less of a ... change?" Mom suggested.
"I don't see the problem with getting a different place. Staying here is fine too, though. It's really up to you guys." I didn't want the pressure of being such a deciding factor. Though, knowing Mom, her whole decision would be based on me.
That's a Mom thing- to make choices based on your kids. Mom is sometimes such a stereotypical Mom.
"Okay." Mom nodded a little.
"No preference?" Callie asked.
I shook my head. I really didn't mind. I was happy with the fact that I wouldn't have to change schools. That was really the most important thing- because, Callie moving in would change my whole life at home. I wanted something stable at school.
Mom and Callie looked at each other for a few moments. Almost as if they were having a silent conversation. I was confused.
"What if we did a little bit of apartment hunting... to see what our options are?" Mom looked between Callie and I.
Callie nodded, "I think that's a great idea."
"Olive, would you come with?" Mom asked.
"Would you want me to?" I asked.
"Of course!" Callie was the first to answer.
Mom followed, "Of course we would. It would be nice- incase we do end up loving something- you'll know all about it, too."
I nodded, Mom was right. It probably was a good idea. Plus, it would help me get a feel for it, know where we would potentially be living. I think that would help me a lot.
"So?" Mom asked.
"Sure, I'll come apartment hunting." I answered.
Mom smiled brightly. "Yay! This is so exciting!" She said.
Callie had a matching, large smile.
They were happy.
