Mother's Day is on Sunday.
It's Thursday. I need to get Mom a gift this year. I figured I could ask Callie to drive me. She would probably say yes.
I hoped so.
I figured she would- I remembered how she had been so willing to help me make Mom's birthday special. This was kind of the same thing. Mother's day, Mom's birthday. Close enough, I guess.
I knew that today, she didn't have work. Mom did. So, after I got back to the apartment, I went to find her.
Callie and Mom's bedroom door was closed. After not seeing her in the living room, dining room, or kitchen, I assumed that she had to be in there. Her car was out front.
"Callie?" I knocked. I didn't want to intrude. And, usually I was going in there to get Mom's attention. Not Callie's.
"Hold on!" Callie called out in response. I heard some shuffling, and then the door opened. "Liv! How was school?" She smiled, leaning her head to the left side, putting in her earrings.
"Hi! It was ok. How was your day?" I smiled back. I always felt like she was so happy to see me. It was a good feeling.
I was starting to like Callie more and more. She was easy to talk to, easy to get along with, fun to be around. She cared about Mom and I. What else could I ask for?
"Nice- I got to sleep in. I was just getting dressed, actually." She tilted her head to the right.
I nodded. "I, uh, have a question." Suddenly I felt a little bit nervous. Not because Callie made me nervous. But, just because. Yeah, I don't know why. There was nothing to be nervous over.
Callie nodded. "Ask away." She walked further into their room, looking in the mirror on the dresser.
I leaned against the door frame. "Sunday is Mother's Day. And I really wanna buy Mom a gift. I already know what I wanna get and I can pay for it but... I guess I'm asking if you could drive me there. Cause, I can't really ask Mom. That would ruin the surprise." I rambled, suddenly nervous she would say no.
Callie turned and smiled, "That's so sweet! Of course I'll drive you! Where is it? Do you wanna go today?" She seemed to get excited by the question, which made me feel strong relief.
I knew she wouldn't let me down.
"The jewelry store in the plaza next to the mall. We can go whenever you have time. I just don't wanna make it obvious to Mom." I wanted this to be a secret. I wanted to surprise Mom. That was the whole point of asking Callie to drive me.
"I need like 10 minutes to do my hair, then we can leave. Is that cool?"
"Sure!" I smiled happily. "Thank you so much!!"
"No problem." Callie replied. She seemed rather excited. Not at all bothered or annoyed.
If I had ever dared to ask my dad that, I would've had my head ripped off. I had barely ever been able to get Mom a mother's day present- unless Teddy was free and took me out shopping for Mom.
But, that was different. That was Teddy buying things for Mom.
This? This was me buying Mom a gift that I knew she wanted.
With money I had saved for a while, waiting for the chance to get it for her. My birthday money.
I know, technically that means it's not my money, it was gifted to me. But, it's still money in my possession.
About as close to actually making my own money as I can get at age 15.
"So, you ready?" Callie asked, coming out of her and Mom's bedroom.
"Yeah!" I smiled brightly. I was very grateful for her for doing this.
"Let's go!"
When we got to the store, I went right to where I knew it was.
"A girl who knows what she wants," Callie laughed.
I nodded, "Of course I do!" I easily found the exact bracelet.
It was silver, and thin. It had two charms on it. One that had 'Mom' written in a cursive. And a charm with a small amethyst ball.
I smiled, picking up the box. It wasn't anything crazy. But, I knew it was perfect for Mom.
Not only is amethyst my birth stone, but it is supposed to help with stress and anxiety.
A double meaning.
Mom has an amethyst necklace already, so it would match.
"See? It's perfect!" I showed Callie.
She smiled, "It's beautiful. I'm sure she'd love that."
"Mom is obsessed with amethyst," I laughed. "Okay, that's really all I needed."
"You're fast," Callie laughed.
I smiled.
"Alright, let's check out? Do you wanna stop and get something to wrap it in?" We started to walk to the check out.
"I think I'll just close the box." I said with a shrug.
I paid for the bracelet, and then we got back in Callie's car. I was smiling like crazy. I had just bought Mom a gift. By myself. Well, Callie had driven me. But, still.
"Thank you for driving me." I said as I buckled myself in.
"No problem, Liv!" Callie smiled.
"It means a lot. Mom is gonna love it." I bounced my leg a little.
"I bet she will. You picked a beautiful bracelet."
"This is the first time I've been able to get her a present. Like, pay for it. You know? So. I'm excited." I provided, giggling a little.
"Aw. It will mean the world to her. You're so sweet." She smiled more, starting to drive again.
I had the biggest smile on my face. So big that my cheeks started to hurt. But, I was happy.
Mom deserved a present. A real one.
As much as she loves my drawings every year, I wanted to do more for her.
She had done so much for me.
A lot of change had come with moving in with Callie.
This change- being able to have someone who wants to do things for Mom with me. This was the best change, arguably.
