I didn't feel as nervous walking into Callie's parents house this time. They were really nice, and I knew it would only be them and Aria's family.
I didn't have anything to worry about.
I was in a romper- Mom said I had to dress nice. Both Mom and Callie were in dresses. Luckily, it was warm out, as it was mid-May.
Callie's mom opened the door, "Oh! They're here guys! Hi! Come on in."
"Hi Mama. Happy Mother's Day." Callie gave her mom a hug.
"Thank you Calliope."
When Mom and I walked inside, Callie's dad was standing there with flowers.
"Happy Mother's Day, Arizona!" He smiled brightly, holding them out to her.
"Oh! Thank you so much, you did not have to do that." I watched as Mom took the flowers. "They're so pretty!"
"We didn't know what you liked, so we got an assortment," Callie's dad laughed.
"I love them, thank you."
"Of course!"
I smiled. That was sweet of them.
When I looked over at Callie, she was smiling insanely big. She had been all day- since I gave her the card.
We went into the back yard, where Lexi jumped on Callie, like always, and we said our hellos to everyone.
Callie's dad and Michael were cooking, and Callie's mom and Aria were talking, so that left me with Mom and Callie. And Lexi, of course.
Callie turned to my mom after setting Lexi on the ground. "They got you flowers."
Mom smiled, "That was very nice of them."
"I think they're really coming around." Callie said.
I was confused. I didn't know what that meant.
"They said they needed some time. But, I feel like... that means they accept it, right?" Callie asked, tilting her head, her eyes were hopeful.
"I'm not sure, Cal." Mom shrugged her shoulders.
"It's... It's a good sign though." Callie said.
Mom nodded, "I would say so, yeah."
"Good." Callie let out a breath of relief. "I was hoping they would come around. I think this is the most seriously they've ever taken my sexuality." Callie and Mom were huddled close. I was just... there.
I wondered what Callie meant by that. Did her parents not accept her? Parts of that made sense- the whole awkward first time meeting them. But, I remembered how Aria said Callie's dad stuck up for her at Thanksgiving.
"That's good, Calliope." Mom smiled more, and then they quickly kissed.
Mom turned to me, holding up her arm with the bracelet I got her. She smiled brightly.
I giggled. I knew she loved it, and that made me happy.
Eventually we sat down, too, and Mom and Callie started to get involved in conversation. Lexi talked to me, like always. She ranted about whatever she could possibly think of, and was smiling the whole time.
I hadn't even known the food was done, but suddenly Callie tapped on my shoulder, and was standing between Mom and I.
"I made you guys plates. Liv with no tomatoes," She smiled at me, placing a plate with a burger in front of Mom, and then one in front of me.
She remembered that I don't like tomatoes.
Silly. But, it made me feel special.
I smiled up at her, "Thank you Callie!"
"Aw, thanks babe."
She simply nodded, and then walked back over to make herself a plate.
"She remembered." I said to Mom.
"Hm?" Mom rose an eyebrow.
"When Callie and I went to the burger place, I ordered a cheese burger. With no tomatoes. She remembered that." I explained.
"Oh." Mom nodded slowly. I still wasn't sure she understood.
"That was like... months ago." I continued. "And she still remembered." Maybe I was making a big deal out of nothing. But, to me, this was really important. It was a tiny little stupid detail about me that she took the time to remember.
Mom laughed a little, "Yeah, honey." She smiled. "You're so cute."
I don't think she fully knows why it means so much.
That's ok.
Soon, Callie came back over, and everyone was sitting around the table on Callie's parents back patio, eating burgers.
It was a lot more relaxed and much less formal than any other time we had been around Callie's family. I didn't know that they had such a laid back side.
It was nice, though. And the food was great.
I was on an all time high. All because of tomatoes.
The thought was funny.
I made a point to smile widely every time Callie's eyes met my own. I hope she knew how much that meant to me.
"Lexi has been doing amazing at school. She's learning how to read currently." Aria said, breaking me out of my thoughts.
Lexi bounced in her seat- she always has so much energy. "My teachers say that I'm a very good reader!" She cheered.
"Oh isn't that just amazing! My granddaughter is so smart!" Callie's mom smiled proudly.
"That's great news!" Callie's dad added in.
"That's wonderful!" Mom smiled. "I wish I still had some of Liv's favorite books from when she started reading. I mean, they'd probably be a little outdated though," Mom laughed.
"Okay I'm not that old." I laughed, too. "What's your favorite book, Lexi?"
"The Lion King!" Lexi said excitedly.
"I had that book!" I glanced at Mom, and everyone laughed. "That was one of my favorites, too."
"It's just like the movie. I love The Lion King!" Lexi exaggerated.
"It's a very good movie," I agreed.
"It's so sweet when they start reading," Mom said, looking at Aria. "Liv and I used to read every night before she went to sleep, and when she was learning to read she would insist that she would read two pages, then I would, over and over for the whole book." Mom laughed.
"Lex does that too!" I heard Aria say, laughing as well.
"Ugh. It's the best." Mom smiled.
"Calliope used to fully take over night time stories," Callie's mom piped in, making everyone laugh again.
Aria nodded, "I can confirm."
"Once she learned to read, Carlos and I never had to read again." Callie's mom added on.
I watched as Mom patted Callie's shoulder. "That's so cute, Cal. What a little bookworm."
Callie shook her head in amusement, just laughing.
I looked around the table. A few months ago, I had no clue who these people were. But, I found them all growing on me.
Especially Callie.
I felt... good. I don't know how else to describe it.
Happy, I guess.
Everyone around me was happy and smiling and laughing.
Positivity.
