"Olive Oliveee" Mom smiled at me as I got into the passenger seat of her car.
"Hey Mom." I smiled back.
"How was Isa?"
"She's good."
"Awesome. Did you have fun?"
"Yup!" I nodded.
"That's good." Mom waited until I buckled, then backed out of Isa's driveway.
"You had fun last night?" I hadn't really had a chance to talk to Mom after her night out with Teddy and April.
"I did! It was great. We went out to eat at this beautiful restaurant. And there was a dance floor!"
I laughed.
"What?"
"Dance floor." I said.
Mom rolled her eyes playfully. "You're mean." She joked.
"Did you dance?"
"Of course!"
"Oh god." I laughed some more.
"Oh shush." Mom shook her head in amusement. "Hey, question."
"Yeah?"
"Do you think Callie was acting weird?"
Oh no. No no no. I can't blatantly lie to Mom. That's rude. And even if I didn't think it was rude, I'm a horrible liar. What do I say? What do I say?
What if I ruin the surprise?
"I mean, usually she would come with. I just thought it was weird of her to be so against it."
I shrugged. "Maybe she had something else to do." That wasn't a lie. That was exactly why she didn't go. I just couldn't tell Mom what that 'something else' was. That part was a secret.
Mom glanced at me, eyebrows scrunched up. "What does that mean?"
I tried not to panic.
Panic would make it obvious I knew something. I had to pretend I didn't know.
"I dunno. Maybe work or something." I shrugged, playing it off the best I can.
"You know something." Mom said.
"What?" I asked, trying so hard to keep my voice from cracking completely. That would make it way too obvious. Mom knew me well, I didn't want her to find out.
Mom just looked at me.
"She was on her laptop like all night, I just figured work." She was on her laptop. Finalizing flower orders. For the proposal. Totally not work related. But, the laptop part wasn't a lie.
"Okay." Mom wasn't convinced.
I laughed it off. "Why are you looking at me like that?"
"I don't know what to believe." She said simply.
"Mom."
"Olivia." She mimicked.
"You're making a big deal out of something silly." You're going to spoil the biggest surprise ever.
"Ugh. Fine. So you don't think it's weird?"
"What's weird?"
"That she didn't come... are you ok?" Mom reached over and touched my cheek.
I giggled, "I'm fine!" I moved away from her hand. "I don't think it's weird. She wanted you to hang out with your friends. I think that's nice of her." I think I sounded pretty convincing. Callie would be proud.
That made me smile. Callie being proud.
Wait... what?
That's different.
Mom smiled, "You're right. And, I had a wonderful time. That's all that matters."
"Exactly!" I nodded. I took out my phone. I had to tell Callie Mom was suspicious. I knew Callie had been extra weird yesterday- so, Mom was bound to be onto us.
"Who you texting?" Mom asked.
"Isa." Ok that was a lie. And I felt bad. I couldn't tell her it was Callie, though. I hit send.
Liv: Mom def knows something is up.
"You were just with her," Mom laughed.
"You text Callie when she goes out to get groceries. We live with her."
Mom laughed more. "That's different! I'm dating her!"
"Yeah, ok." I giggled.
Callie: Really? Oh no!!
Liv: I think I've convinced her it's nothing.
Callie: Good job.
Callie: You're the best!
Callie: For the record, I am not saying it's ok to lie to your Mom.
I giggled at that.
"Hm?" Mom said.
"Nothing." I said quickly.
"Okay. Weirdo." Mom glanced at me, smiling.
I smiled, too- anything to make myself seem less nervous. This car ride needed to end. There were only so many more white lies I could tell.
I am a horrible liar.
When we finally got home, I thanked God that Callie was home. I had a feeling that I would accidentally spill if I had to spend more time alone with Mom.
"Zonnaaa! Liv!" Callie said from the couch when we walked inside.
Mom walked over and kissed her. "Hi babe. You look cute in your scrubs."
"Mm hi. Thank you."
"Ew." I mumbled. "Wait, you have work?!" I realized that Mom said Callie was wearing scrubs. So, she was leaving.
Callie laughed as she sat up, "I do. I have to leave in like..." Callie looked at her phone, "Fifteen minutes."
"Oh." I said, my voice way too pitchy.
"Okay. What is up with the two of you?!" Mom asked.
"What?" Callie rose her eyebrow.
Mom scrunched her face up, "I'm so confused."
"Why?" Callie started to pull her hair into a ponytail.
I stayed silent. I couldn't say anything- I didn't want to slip up.
"I don't know. You two are weird." Mom walked into the kitchen.
I glanced at Callie.
"She really is onto us," Callie mouthed.
I bit my lip and nodded a little bit.
"Are you guys done being weird, now?" Mom walked back in with a granola bar in her hand.
"I don't know, are we?" Callie joked.
"I'm not sure!" I fed into the joke.
Mom rolled her eyes, laughing.
Callie stood up, going over to Mom. "You're beautiful." She said.
I immediately looked at my phone, trying to ignore them being all intimate and gross. But, I saw them hugging out of the corner of my eye.
"I'm gonna use the bathroom and then leave." Callie said quietly.
Then I heard them kissing. For a while.
Literally so gross.
When they finally stopped sucking face like weirdos, Mom asked, "You'll be home at 6?"
"Just in time to see you before you leave." Callie replied.
I faked a gag, looking over at them.
"Stop that!" Mom laughed.
"Ok, I gotta go to the bathroom." Callie tapped Mom's sides, and then went to the bathroom.
When she came back out, Callie gave Mom another insanely and awkwardly long kiss, and exchanged a knowing look with me. Then, off she went.
Leaving me to hope that she had gotten Mom's mind away from the whole being suspicious thing.
