Chapter 5: Spelldrive Competing

Back to the question: Briar, Sereia, Grim, and Trinket are wondering about this Spelldrive Tournament.

Briar asks, "So what exactly is Spelldrive? I never heard of that game before."

Ace turns to Briar in surprise, "Dude, Briar... You've never heard of Spelldrive?!"

"It's a world-famous sport! There's even a pro league and a world championship tournament," Deuce adds.

"In case you guys have forgotten what I told you, I'm not from here. So I have no clue about the culture and what goes on in this world," Briar sternly says with her arms crossed.

"Oh yeah. You did say you came from a world without magic," Ace says.

Then Grim says, "I ain't never heard of this either!"

"Me neither," Sereia says.

Trinket shrugs her shoulders with a ringing sound.

Then Tanzanite says, "I heard of it."

"Me too. I always wanted to play it," Jasper says.

Then Ace says, "Spelldrive is a sport played by competing teams of seven people. Basically, players battle for control of a disc and earn points by drivin' it into the enemy team's goal. The team with the most points wins!"

"It sounds like fun," Sereia says.

"It is," Ace says.

"It like the game is a combination between disc golf and American football

"Football...? Say what?" Deuce says, confused.

"Disc golf…? Never heard of it," Jasper replies.

"They're fun games where I came from. Football can be played at school and at internationals," Briar says.

Crowley takes an interest, "Hm. I've not heard of such a game, but I'll look it up the next time I'm at the library. Perhaps it will yield some sort of clue."

"Still, this Spelldrive competition sounds exciting, I don't mind signing up," Briar says.

"Oh yeah? You a big sports fan, Briar?" Ace replies.

Briar blushes, "Well, I did play a few sports myself.

Then Decue says, "

Suddenly, Ace remembers, "Oh, man, I just realized that Briar would have a hard time actually playing.

"Why do you say that?" Briar asks.

"Yeah? Why's that?" Grim replies.

You need magic to play. Not only do you move the disc with magic, but you use it to attack and defend, too," Deuce answers.

Then Ace says, "The flashier the magic, the better—it's how players show off their skills!"

"Yes, quite!" Crowley says and sounds excited, "That is why Night Raven College is known throughout the world as a leader in the sport! This school has produced countless pro players!"

He calms himself and says, "That's why our interdorm Spelldrive tournaments attract attention even from pro league recruiters. Also, those simply looking for up-and-coming magicians use the event to scout hopeful candidates. Yes, the tournament is quite an affair. The campus will be full of visitors and lined with various kiosks. And the main event will be captured by television cameras and broadcast worldwide."

"Wow... That's incredible," Briar says, amazed.

"Wow… so the school is going to be on T.V," Sereia says, amazed.

It's broadcast throughout the world?!" Grim asks, surprised.

Then grows excited, "So you're sayin' that if I were to play in this tournament—and win of course—the whole world would see it?!"

"Of course! Players who excel at the tournament invariably attract great attention. Both from the pro leagues and the public at large!" Crowley says.

Deuce turns to Grim, "In your case, the magic would barely even matter. Just having a monster like you out there is sure to turn heads."

"Yeah. And it will be surprising when they see two girls playing for the Night Raven College Team," Tanzanite says.

"We also have two dwarfs and a fair attending too," Jasper says.

"That would be something for the history books," Ace says with a grin.

Then Grim shouts with excitement, "It's settled, then! I'm gonna train around the clock, join a team, and become a legend!"

However, Crowley says, "Alas, Grim, you cannot enter."

"...Wait, what?" Grim asks, shocked.

"Did you not hear me speak the word 'interdorm' multiple times?" Crowley questions.

Then explains, "Your dorm doesn't even have seven members. Therefore, you cannot enter the tournament."

"Whaaaaaat?! No faaaaair!" Grim screams in disappointment.

Briar sighs, "But he's right. There's only like six of us."

"I have to agree. We have a human, a cat-like creature, a doll, two dwarves, and a fairy. That doesn't seem to even the odds," Tanantie says.

"I'm not a cat!" Grim angrily says.

"Still, some of us have never played the game before. We might not stand a chance against the other teams, who are probably more skilled than us," Briar says.

Grim sighs, "I sometimes hate when you say logical stuff."

But Crowley says, " But there's plenty else to do, from tending to the grounds to selling drinks in the stands! Those who stand upon the field are not the only stars of tournament day."

But Grim complains, "Not. Interested! I wanna be on TV! I want everyone in the world fawning over me! 'Squeee! Grim is sooooo cool!' 'Did you see that play Grim made?' You get what I'm sayin'?"

"Your delusions are oddly specific, dude," Ace says.

"Well, if you can't field a team, I'm afraid that's that," Deuce replies. "Maybe next year, Ramshackle House will get some new members. But it's not happening this year."

"Anyway, as I believe I've mentioned, I'm a busy man. I must be off," Crowley says.

Before leaving, Crowley turns to Briar, "Before I forget, Briar as housewarden, I expect you to be at the meeting as well."

"Yes sir," Briar says.

"Good. I'll see you at the meeting," Crowley says and leaves the room.

"Yeah, thanks for takin' me outta your busy day to build up my dreams and crush 'em! Myaaah!" Grim says and begins sobbing.

Briar pets Grim on the head, "Don't worry, I'm sure we can try out for the Spelldrive Tournament next year. We just need to get some practice and have more members in our dorm."

Grim sadly sighs, "Fine."

"Well, I gotta get to the meeting, so I'll meet you all back at the dorm," Briar says.

Then turns to Tanzanite, "And Tanzanite, you're in charge."

"Okay," Tanzanite says.

"Why is Tanzanite in charge?" Grim asks, annoyed.

"Because we voted him to be our vice housewarden. We voted on it," Sereia says.

"That's right. And it's a fair vote," Jasper says.

Tanzanite says, "Now now. Come on, let's head back to the dorm while we wait for Briar."

While Briar heads to the meeting, everyone else heads back to their dorm.
