After School
Nattasia sat quietly in Boomer's car. Her eyes were fixed on her lap, as she sat quietly. Boomer looked over at her concerned, "You okay?" he asked. She didn't respond. "The only time you have ever been this quiet is when John first introduced you to our group." She still remained quiet, a tear streaming down her cheek.
"I'm sorry." She whispered.
"For what?" Boomer said, occasionally glancing over at her while he was driving.
"If it wasn't for me, this wouldn't have happened." She said.
"What do you mean?" Boomer asked stupidly.
"I mean if it wasn't for me John wouldn't have gotten hurt!" Then the tears started coming again.
"Hey..." He said in a soft voice pulling over the Mustang, "it's not your fault it would have happened anyways. You can't blame yourself." He leaned over and hugged her, allowing her to cry into his shoulder. "We will find a way to stop this from happening again."
They both rushed into John's hospital room, causing Nattasia to almost have a heart attack. "The police received a call from a neighbor complaining about noise, when they came in they found him on the floor. He still has a pulse, he is just in pretty bad shape. He might be out for a couple of days...or weeks." The doctor said.
"What do you mean weeks?" Nattasia said in a quivering voice as she looked at John, confined in the bed. He had multiple tubes going into him, his pulse on a screen.
"He still has brain activity but we are not certain when he is going to wake up."
"With all this new technology shit you can't find out when he's going to wake up? Bullshit. You're just too lazy to get your ass into another room and actually try to help another person's life!" Boomer shouted. Nattasia had never seen him cry before, but now she had. In her mind Boomer was always the strong one, the one who held everything together. But seeing him break down made her realize that she had to step up and be strong for both of them. She mouthed "sorry" to the doctor and hugged Boomer, who was crying as much as she had earlier.
"He'll wake up." She whispered to him. "Don't worry. I know he will."
Boomer nodded, "I'll go get something from the vending machines...do you need anything?" He asked.
"No, I'm fine." She gave a small smile to him, before he walked out. It seemed like forever since she was alone with John. Seeing him so...weak as odd to her.
