Chapter 2
Liberio
It was near sunset by the time they reached Liberio. Reiner had stayed with Evelyn in the quarters while they sailed. She had refused to look at him or talk to him. It was getting fustrated that she wouldn't talk to him, but they were taking her from the only home she ever knew. Tears streaked her checks as they arrive at Liberio and she was escorted to the Headquarters and into a room with door locked behind her.
Reiner sat in with Magath, Zeke, Pieck, A Marleyan General, and Galliard, who now holds the Jaw Titan. Zeke and Reiner explained what happened and that they not just lost one Titan but now two to the enemy. Magath did not look happy to hear the news, but he never seemed happy.
"And what about the girl? I don't like the idea of a Island Devil here." Magath said.
"We should just kill her. She's gonna cause a problem." Galliard said.
"No." Reiner said. Everyone looked at him. "She's the sister of Eren Jaeger who holds the Founding Titan. We kill her we will feel more of his wrath. She could be a tool to use to bring Eren to us when we attack." Magath stroked his chin in thought.
"He's right. She be useful." Zeke said.
"Its settled. She will stay. We'll keep her in a cell." Magath said.
"She is very hot tempered. I don't think the guards would handle her. Put her with one of the Warriors." Reiner said.
"You volunteering to take her?" Magath asked. Everyone looked at Reiner. Reiner clenched his jaw.
"He does know her from when he infiltrated their Military. I say put her with someone she knows." Zeke said. Reiner didn't like the sounds of that.
"Then it's settled. Give her one of your red armbands then." Magath said.
"But.." Magath held up his hand.
"She's your ward and people will know she's under your protection. She will not be permited to leave your house without you or one of the Warriors present with her." Magath said. Galliard looked pissed at those words.
"I'm not babysitting an Island Devil." Galliard said.
"Then Pieck and I will babysit her." Reiner said, pinching the bridge of his nose. Galliard and Eveyln match in Temper and Reiner was not going to be in the mood to break those two up when they got into it.
"What's the devils name?" The Gereral asked.
"Evelyn Jaeger." Zeke said.
"Jaeger? Distant relative of yours?" Galliard asked.
"She's my half sister..." Zeke said as Reiner got up and left the room to go to Evelyn not wanting to hear Zeke's explanation of his relationship. He heard it before the Scouts came to Shiganshina.
Evelyn was sitting on the windowsill, looking out at Liberio. Her arms were wrapped around her legs and head resting on them. Her checks were wet from crying. The door unlocking caught her attention, but she didn't turn her head. Reiner looked towards her as he shut the door.
"What's going to happen to me?" Evelyn asked as he walked up to her.
"Your to stay under my care and not leave to go anywhere unless one of us is with you." Reiner said. She looked up at him and his heart almost broke seeing her crying.
"So I am pretty much a prisoner, but still have some freedom." Evelyn said. Reiner looked at her.
"Would you rather be in a cell?" Reiner asked. She shook her head. "I didn't think so. Come on. We're going to my home."
"Where's your home?" Evelyn asked.
"With my mother for now till they find us a place." Reiner said. He handed her a bag. "Pieck got you clothes so you don't have to wear your Scout Uniform." Reiner left for her to change. Evelyn changed into a white shirt with a red skirt with black boots to go with it. She held up the red armband as Reiner came in. She saw he had one on his.
"What's this?" Evelyn said, holding it up by her fingers. Reiner came over and took the armband from her.
"These are what Eldians wear in Marley. Normal Eldians wear white armbands, Warrior Cadets wear yellow armbands, and red is an Official Marleyan. Because you'll be staying with me and under my protection. You'll be wearing red." Reiner explained. Evelyn's mouth pursed.
"It sounds like serigation to me." Evelyn said.
"Just be careful what you say in the city or you will be sent out to Paradis but turned into a titan. I don't want to explain to your brother what happened to you." Reiner said, he slips the armband onto her arm.
"Why do you care what happens to me. You turned your back on me and our friends when you revealed you were the Armored Titan." Evelyn said. Reiner grabbed her arm gently and pulled her out of the room.
"Because anyone else besides Zeke would have you killed, in a prison, or shipped to Paradis and turned into a Titan. We were friends in Cadet Corps. I won't let that happen. That's why Zeke trusts me with you. Earn everyones trust and you will get more freedom here." Reiner said. Evelyn looked away. He hated seeing her upset, but she wasn't loosing her temper.
"So this is the Island Devil?" Galliard said, coming over with Magath.
"It's Evelyn Jaeger, not Island Devil." Evelyn said.
"Still an Island Devil." Galliard said. Evelyn moves, but Reiner stops her.
"No need to get her mad in front of the Commander. Evelyn. This is Galliard. He holds the Jaw Titan that Ymir possessed." Reiner said. Evelyn's eyes widen at his words.
"Friend of yours?" Galliard asked.
"Yes. I use to hang with her and Christa during Cadet Corps." Evelyn said. The memory of sitting in the mess hall with Ymir, who was a tanned girl with freckles and freckles across her checks and Christa, who was now Queen Historia of the island, laughing as Ymir poked at Christa. The two were two bushels in a bundle when together. She had left with Reiner and Bertholdt when they rescued Eren from them. No one knew what happened to her. "Where's Ymir?"
"She passed the Jaw Titan to Galliard. She's no longer with us. Reiner will explain more as the time goes." Magath said, glaring at Reiner. Magath and Galliard pass by. Galliard shoves at Evelyn's shoulder as he walks by.
"Don't." Reiner said in her ear as he pulls her back from turning.
"Others can inherit Titans like you and Eren?" Evelyn asked as they head down the hall.
"Yes. Titan shifters can live 13 years and then they have to pass it on to the next shifter. Ymir went willingly." Reiner said.
"If you live for 13 years, how long do you have?" Evelyn asked. Reiner looked at her.
"Eight." Reiner said. Evelyn felt her heart sank. "If Eren got the Attack Titan after Wall Maria fell, he has nine years." Evelyn and him walked in silence. They set out to the Interment Zone from the Marley HQ. Children were playing in the streets while adults watch. Evelyn didn't miss the glares that Reiner and her got, but Reiner ignored them. Guards stood at the gate to the Internment Zone.
"Hey wait!" Pieck called. They turned to see her walking towards them on her crutch. "I was excused for the day to see my father." Pieck walked with them.
"Um. Thank you for the clothes." Evelyn said.
"No problem. I can take you shopping for more clothes tomorrow so you got your own. Long as Reiner doesn't mind." Pieck said, eying Reiner.
"I trust you more then Porco." Reiner said. They reached the Internment Zone. Guards greeted Reiner and Pieck and glared at Evelyn. One goes to open his mouth. "She's with me. Magath gave orders that's she's under my protection." The guard shuts his mouth and lets them go. Pieck went one way while Reiner led her towards a house.
"Reiner's home!" A eight year old girl ran from the house and nearly tackles Reiner to the ground. He chuckles as he ruffles the kids head.
"Hello Gabi." Reiner said.
"Aunt Karina will be happy your home. You here to stay?" Gabi asked.
"For now. Yes." Reiner said. Gabi noticed Evelyn next to him.
"Whose this?" Gabi said.
"This is Evelyn. She is from Pardis." Reiner said. Gabi moved away.
"An Island Devil?! Why is she here." Gabi nearly sneered. Evelyn's eyes widen.
"She's here as a prisoner and is under my protection. Magath and Mr. Zeke think she could be a tool against Paradis." Reiner explained.
"You know I'm right here and can hear everything." Evelyn sighed. Reiner sighed.
"Let's head to my house and I can explain everything more than once to everyone." Reiner said. They head to the house. Karina embraced her son. She was a short blonde woman. Gabi was still glaring at Evelyn. Evelyn closed her eyes and opened them.
Dinner. Reiner had explained everything with why Evelyn was there and where she was. Evelyn picked at her food. The food was delicious, but she could feel Gabi's father glare on her.
"I don't understand why your in charge of this devil." Karina said.
"Evelyn and I have known each other since I infiltrated the Military. We trained together. She's a Combat Medic for the Survey Corps before we captured her." Reiner explained.
"And she's related to this Eren and both are half siblings of Zeke? And Eren holds the Founder Titan and Attack Titan?" Reiner's uncle asked.
"Yes." Reiner and Evelyn said at once. Eveylyn looked at her plate. Karina goes to put dishes in the sink. Evelyn stood.
"I can help." Evelyn offered.
"I don't need help from the likes of you." Karina offered. Reiner pinched the bridge of his nose. Evelyn bit her lip as she felt her anger flare. She grabbed her plate and put it in sink.
"Excuse me." Evelyn said. She disappeared down the hall. Reiner didn't miss the tears in her eyes. Reiner turned to his mother.
"Mother. She was trying to help." Reiner said.
"Reiner. I.." Karina said as Reiner stood up.
"We took her from her home, away from her friends and her brother, who is the only family she has left. So please. Try and accept her here. I know others won't, but she's under my watch. I'm going to check on her." Reiner said. He went down the hall and up the stairs. He entered his old room to find the window open. Reiner peaked out and looked up to see feet dangling. Reiner pulled himself up to see Evelyn laying on the roof, looking at the stars.
"I'm sorry for disappearing." Evelyn said, not looking at Reiner as he laid next to her. Sometimes when she was pissed at Jean or Eren. Reiner and her would go to the lake or lay on the mess hall roof to look at the stars.
"It's fine. You left before you said something you regretted. You'll have to understand that we were told you and the people of Paradis were Island Devils and most will hate you. My family needs some time to get use to you." Reiner said.
"I.. I understand." Evelyn said. They laid in silence. Evelyn turned her head to look at Reiner. "This feels like old times in the Cadet Core."
"It does." Reiner said, looking at her with a glint in his eyes. Evelyn looked back at the stars. A tear slipped down her check. She missed home and missed Eren and their friends, but she knew she had to survive Marley to see them again.
