Chapter 3
Settling In
It was a week since Evelyn's arrival in Liberio. Pieck had taken her out shopping for clothes. Word had gotten around that and Island Devil was now livign as a prisoner and Evelyn didn't miss the whispers that followed her wherever she went if it was with Reiner or Pieck.
"Just ignore them." Pieck had said, but Evelyn didn't miss it. She was not sleeping well an night or getting no sleep with to much on her mind and she missed her brother. Reiner didn't miss the dark circles under her green eyes. His mom and family tried to be nice but Evelyn didn't miss the resenment in their eyes. Gabi wouldn't even look at her and she tried to be nice to the little girl. Reiner had told her to give it time and she wondered how long it would take.
End of the first week Reiner and Evelyn were told they got a place for them close to the Headquarters. Evelyn seemed relaxed that she wouldn't have to stay at his mothers house for now.
"Damn it. This thing in heavy." Galliard grunted as him and Reiner got the couch into the living room. Pieck had volunteered him to help Reiner get the furniture into the house. The girls were grocery shopping. Reiner and Galliard sat the couch down. It was the last piece of furniture they needed to take into the house. Reiner and Galliard fell onto the couch.
"Thanks for the help, Galliard." Reiner said.
"I didn't do it for you. Pieck kind of forced me. I still think the girl should be imprisoned." Galliard said. Reiner shot him a glare. "I'm just stating. I'm not the only one. There's plenty of people that think she be locked up. Your going to ruin your reputation."
"It is already ruined after Annie and Bertholdt were taken. I don't care what people are saying about me. I just worry for Evelyn." Reiner said.
"You guys were friends before you betrayed them?" Galliard asked. Reiner nodded.
"Her and her brother were. Her brother could be hot headed at times along with Evelyn, but when was wasn't mad she could be a sweet girl." Reiner said. Memory of her shocked faced when Reiner revealed to her and Eren on top of Wall Rose that he was the Armored still haunted him. It was a mix of pain and betrayal.
"I trusted you!" Her voice echoed in his head. The door pulled him out of his thoughts and Pieck and Evelyn came in carrying bags of groceries. Pieck was using her crutch. He couldn't help but smile. Evelyn and Pieck had become friends. He was happy to see her smiling and laughing. Reiner got up.
"Here." Reiner took the bags from the girls. Pieck gave a small smile as Reiner set the bags on the counter. Evelyn followed him and they start to put the groceries away. She still didn't trust him fully, but he could tell she was slowly warming up to him.
"You guys staying for dinner?" Evelyn called over her shoulder. Galliard shot to his feet.
"I'll pass. I have to head to Headquarters." Galliard said.
"For what?" Reiner grumbled.
"Paperwork. And yours is piling up." Galliard said as he slipped out the door. Reiner grumbled.
"Reiner. Its fine. He still doesn't trust me." Evelyn said. Reiner looked at the door.
"I'll stay for dinner, Reiner." Pieck said. She came over to help as the three worked on making dinner. Evelyn stayed quiet as Reiner and Pieck talked.
Late at night. Evelyn stared out the window at the moon. She wondered what her brother and their friends were doing. She missed Hange's crazieness and Levi's scowl. Evelyn got out of bed and heads downstairs towards the kitchen. She threw a kettle on the stove to make tea. She was exhausted, but couldn't sleep. She closed her eyes as she wrapped her arms around her body.
"Hey." She jumped when Reiner's voice came from the door. She looked at him. "Can't sleep?"
"No. I'm making tea. Want some?" Evelyn asked. Reiner nodded as the kettle went off. She grabbed it off the stove and poured two cups. She brought one over to Reiner and sat down. They sat in silence, sipping their tea. Reiner watched her. She kept her eyes anywhere but him.
"Your not sleeping." Reiner broke the silence. Green eyes flick towards him. "Why?"
"I just... I miss my brother and our friends. I'm grateful to have Pieck for trying to befriend me." Evelyn said. Something else was bothering her. He got up off his chair and comes to her. He grabs her chin and makes her look at him. A sad look was on her face.
"What else is bothering you." Reiner said. Evelyn looked away. "Eve." Evelyn's eyes snapped back to him. It was the nickname he use to call her in the Cadet Corps. He hadn't called her it for a long time. "Tell me."
"Everyone is calling for me to be thrown in jail or sent back home as a Titan. I know I'm an Island Devil but why should I be blamed for happened so long ago." Evelyn whispered. Reiner rubbed a thumb against her check.
"It's not your fault. We were all raised to hate the People of Paridis. I lived amoung you. I might have hated you all, but I considered you all friends and saw something different then what we were told. Just show them that you aren't a devil. You might have a temper." Reiner chuckled. Evelyn pressed her lips together. "But you got a good heart, Eve." They stared at each other. He looked into the green eyes. He could always get lost in them. He wondered what would of happened if he didn't reveal who he truly was. They had grown close. "I'll talk to Magath. We got a hospital here in town. You loved being a field medic for the scouts. I don't see him having an issue of you working long as I drop you off and pick you up." A smile graced her face and her eyes lit up.
"Thank you Reiner." Evelyn said. Reiner stood up.
"Get some sleep, Evelyn. Your coming to Headquarters with me tomorrow." Reiner said with a smiled. Evelyn finished her tea and they got to their rooms to sleep.
The next morning. Evelyn and Reiner walked together towards the Headquarters. Reiner stayed close to her side. People stared at them. Evelyn kept her eyes forward. Reiner grumbled as they entered Headquarters. Galliard hadn't been lying about the paperwork that piled up on Reiner's desk. Reiner sighed.
"Falling behind?" Evelyn said with a smirk.
"Tch. I'll get to it after I talk to Magath." Reiner grumbled.
In Magath's office. Magath didn't seem happy about Reiner's suggestion.
"Commander. I'm fine with taking her to work and picking her up. If anything Pieck will pick her up." Reiner said. Evelyn shrinked in Magath's stare.
"You were a medic on the field?" Magath said.
"Yes sir." Evelyn said.
"She was one of the good ones and she's a fast learner. It'll give her something to do." Reiner said.
"I think its a bad idea. Not everyone is gonna want her there." Galliard said.
"But its a way to earn peoples trust. I think its a splendid idea." Zeke said. Magath rubbed his chin.
"Alright. Long as the Head Nurse is fine with her working and one of you pick her up after her shift." Magath said. Evelyn gave a small smile.
"Thank you." Evelyn said. Magath gave a nod.
"Reiner go take her to the hospital. And I expect all those papers done before you leave for the night." Magath ordered.
"Yes sir." Reiner said. Reiner stood up and Evelyn followed him. They headed outside and saw kids training in the courtyard. Reiner froze. Evelyn looked out and saw Gabi wearing one of the uniforms. "Gabi!" Gabi turned. A blond hair tall boy looked over as Gabi squealed and ran towards Reiner. Few kids ran over.
"Reiner. Your here. What is she doing here?" Gabi said.
"We were talking to Magath to get her a job at the Eldian hospital." Reiner said. Gabi scrunched her eyebrows. "What are you doing here?"
"Udo, Zofia, Falco and I joined the Warrior Canidates." Gabi said. Evelyn saw Reiner pale at her words. "Isn't that great?"
"Yeah. That's great." Reiner said. Evelyn knew he was lying, but Gabi seemed to believe him. "I'll see you later tonight." Reiner and Evelyn walked away.
"Warrior Canidates?" Evelyn asked. Reiner continued walking. Evelyn grabbed his arm, stopping him. "Reiner. Talk to me." Reiner pulled her into an alleyway.
"I forgot your still learning being in Liberio. Warrior Canidates are those that train to inherit one of the nine Titans." Reiner said.
"You were one before?" Evelyn said, looking up at him.
"Yes. Galliard was actually suppose to inherit the Armor, but his brother, who had the Jaw Titan before Ymir, had tricked the brass to protect him and I inherited it." Reiner said. Evelyn looked surprised. "Galliard doesn't know. Please keep it to yourself." Evelyn nodded. The explanation of the years of shifters was explained to her before. "Let's get you over to the hospital." Reiner pulled her down the street towards the hospital.
Reiner and Evelyn stood by the head nurse station. The woman looked to be in her late thirties. She studied Evelyn. Evelyn bit her lip.
"You have medical training?" Anita asked after Reiner explained stuff.
"Yes, mam. I was a Combat Medic back home." Evelyn said.
"Your the Islander everyone is talking about." Anita said. Evelyn nodded, lightly.
"I'm a fast learner, mam. I won't slow everyone down." Evelyn said.
"She is and I can vouch for her." Reiner said. Anita looked at Reiner.
"Magath gave the okay for her to work here? And you'll be bringing her to work and picking her up?" Anita asked.
"Yes." Reiner said. Anita sighed.
"Can you start tomorrow morning?" Anita asked.
"I can." Evelyn said with a huge smile on her face.
Reiner and her walked out. Evelyn hugged him.
"Thank you, Reiner." Evelyn said. Reiner chuckled.
"Let's get you back home. I probably will be staying late to get paperwork done. There's some books you can read, but I'll have Pieck come and keep you company tonight." Reiner said. Evelyn nodded. They walked back to the house.
'Everyone thinks I'm dead and there's no way to get back home. Might as well try and fit in here.' Evelyn thougtht.
AN: There will be time skips here and there. Hope you enjoyed. Till next time.
