Chapter 4
Trouble
Time seemed to go fast for Evelyn as she worked at the hospital. It kept her busy. There were some patients that wouldn't let her help and she was sent to do other things, but slowly she started earning some patients trusts and became friends with Anita, who got the okay to walk her home if none of the Warriors could come, which was rare, because Reiner was always there waiting when she got done or Pieck did. Evelyn didn't fully trust Reiner yet, but they were starting to warm up to each other.
Evelyn couldn't believe it had been a few months since she arrived in Liberio. It was her day off and she had the windows open in the house to let the breeze in the house. She was reclined on the couch with a book in her hand, reading into the history of Marley. Reiner and Pieck got her books about it. The sun was getting low in the horizon.
The door opened and Evelyn looked over the top of her book as Reiner came in. He looked exhausted.
"Everything alright?" Evelyn asked as Reiner fell on the couch. Evelyn moved her legs as he laid down.
"I just had an exhausting day. Gabi is excelling in her classes." Reiner said with a frown on his face.
"You don't want her as a Warrior?" Evelyn asked.
"No. I don't want her to have the same future as me. She only will live 13 years and be eaten. She is dead set on inheriting the Armored." Reiner said, running his hand through his hair. Evelyn put her book down.
"She's got eight years before she can inherit it, Reiner. Maybe one will pass her. There are others." Evelyn said. Reiner sighed, but nodded. Evelyn goes to grab her book, but Reiner grabs her hand.
"Let's go for a walk. You been busy with work then cooped up in the house. Come on." Reiner said, pulling Evelyn to her feet. Evelyn didn't fight him as he pulled her out the door.
The streets were quiet. Reiner saw her relax a bit for the first time in a long time since she was forced to leave her home to come to Marley. He was taking her to a place she hadn't seen since they left. He knew she loved it there.
"Where are we going?" Evelyn asked.
"You'll see." Reiner said. Evelyn raised an eyebrow, but didn't argue. They walked in silence. Reiner looked at her out of the corner of his eye. Her green eyes stayed forward. Her brown hair fell in curls to her waist. He looked back when she looked at him. "We're here." They rounded the corner and Evelyn's eyes lit up. The ocean was in front of them. Reiner couldn't help but chuckle to Evelyn's eyes liting up. She pulled him towards the beach as the sun was starting to set.
They sat on the beach watching as the sunset over the ocean. Evelyn felt homesick, missing Eren and their friends. She hoped her brother, Mikasa, and Armin, if he survived went to the ocean. She still wondered who got Bertholdt. She didn't doubt Levi and Hange fed him to someone, but who. She dind't even know who survived besides Hange, Jean, Sasha, and Conny. She closed her eyes as she brought her knees to her chest.
"You alright?" Reiner asked.
"Just homesick. People are starting to slowly warm up at the hospital and you and Pieck have been amazing, but I still miss home." Evelyn said. Reiner knew she was holding stuff in. His family was still trying to accept her. Pieck's dad was more open, but hesitant at first. Reiner took her hand. She looked at him.
"You know. If they ever came back for you. You should go back. I don't think its right your brother had you taken away from the one place you knew. Though you seem more happy here." Reiner said. Evelyn chuckled.
"Even though I can't go anywhere without you or Pieck with. Well. I guess it's betten then a cell." Evelyn said. Reiner chuckled. "I'm sure Eren misses me along with the others. But they probably think I'm dead."
"They probably do. Galliard wanted you dead if I hadn't stopped him. We don't need your brother more mad at us then he already is." Reiner said. Darkness fell across the ocean and the moon shone on the water. Evelyn felt tired. "Come on. Let's head back. Pieck and her family invited us for supper." Reiner got up and pulled Evelyn to her feet. Reiner felt something hit his neck and the world spun.
"Reiner." Evelyn said as he fell to his knees. Her eyes widen when she saw a dart sticking out of his neck. "That's.." Something hit her in her neck. She fell to the ground as she saw men apporaching her as her head hit the sand.
"Grab her." A man's voice orderd as blackness took her.
"Reiner. Reiner. Wake up." Pieck's voice called to him.
"He's got a dart in his neck. Looks like they knocked him out." Galliard said.
"Where's Evelyn though?" Pieck said. Reiner opened his eyes. "Reiner. What the hell happened? Where's Evelyn?" Reiner sat up.
"All I remember is blacking out and men approaching. One said to grab her. Damn it." Reiner said.
"There were talks amonst the soldiers that there were some Marleyans talking of capturing Evelyn and shipping her to Paradis in pieces." Galliard said. Reiner and Pieck glared at Galliard. "What? I didn't spread the rumors. I might hate the Island Devil but I wouldn't want that to happen to her." Reiner stood up and almost fell. Galliard caught him.
"We need to find her and fast." Reiner gritted his teeth.
"Your in no shape..." Pieck started.
"I'm fine!" Reiner snapped.
"Pieck. Go get backup. We'll go look for the Devil." Galliard said with a sigh. Pieck started heading one way. "Where would they have her?"
"I don't think they got far with an unconious girl." Reiner said.
Evelyn woke up in a haze but her hands were bound and a gag in her mouth. She was laying on hard cement. She turned her head, looking around. She moved her hands and found the ropes were loose. Someone didn't tie them tight enough. She freed her hands and pulled the gag out. She tried to stand up but nearly fell. Whatever was in the dart was still in her system. She looked around and found she was in a warehouse as she pulled herself up using a box.
"I don't think its a good idea." A man's voice came. Evelyn's head snapped towards the direction. She gritted her teeth and pushed through the weakness to get away from where the men were coming. "She is protected by one of the Warriors. We really want to bring down their wrath?" They were getting closer as Evelyn disappeared into the darkness.
"I don't care. She's an Island Devil. I don't know what they were thinking bringing the devils spawn to Liberio." The leader said. They came around the corner. "You idiots. You didn't tighten the ropes tight enough!"
"I thought I did." A Soldier said.
"Find her." The Leader said. Evelyn knocked over a box and swore under her breath. She took off running. A soldier jumped in front of her and she swung around and kicked him in the head, sending him flying. She grabbed another man by the face and used her leg to kick his leg out and sent him to the ground on his back.
"She's a fighter!" A soldier yelled.
'Idiots. I was trained by Reiner and Annie. You really think I would go down easy. I just need to either escape or hold them off till the others get here.' Evelyn thought. A gunshot rings out and Evelyn felt pain in her shoulder. She gritted her teeth. She leaned against the wall. She put her hand to her shoulder. Blood covered her hand. The bullet went clean through. 'Damn it.'
"Come out. Come out. Devil." The leader called. Evelyn turned her head. "We just want to send you back to your home in pieces." Evelyn kept her hand on her shoulder. She turned and gasped as the leader was in front of her. "Found you." Evelyn kicked him in his crotch and he grunted in pain as he grabbed the area. Evelyn went running. "Bitch." Gunshots rang out and Evelyn jumped behind a box. heard the bullets hit the box.
"Gunshots." Galliard called. Reiner gritted his teeth. "She's not going to last."
"She knows how to fight, Porco. Annie and I trained her in hand to hand combat. She'll hold them off till we either get there or she gets out." Galliard looked surprised. "Noise is coming from that way. Let's go."
Evelyn ran through the boxes.
'Damn. I wish I had my ODM gear right now.' Evelyn said. She ran felt an hand grab her. She turned and tried to punch him but he punched her in the face. She hit the ground. The leader grabbed her by the neck and started squeezing. Evelyn saw a board inches away and she starts reaching for it as black spots form in her eyesight.
"After we're done with you maybe we'll visit your island and kill your friends." The leader growled. The door burst open, making the leader jump. Evelyn grabbed the board and hit the leader hard in the head, sending him flying. She felt her energy draining as soldiers yelled.
"Eve!" Reiner yelled. Evelyn used the rest of her stregnth to send the board flying into a crate as she coughed. Reiner came into eyesight.
"Reiner." Evelyn whispered as blackness took her.
Reiner bent down to see her eyes close. She had blood running down her arm and a bruise forming on her face. One soldier was laying not far with a bloody head.
"Damn. She put up a fight." Galliard said, coming over as Reiner picked her up. Her head rolled to rest in the crook of his neck. "Her neck is turning red." Soldiers burst through in every direction. Zeke and Magath were with.
"Reiner." Zeke said as he came over with Magath as the soldiers secured the warehouse.
"She's badly hurt. I'm taking her to the hospital." Reiner said.
"Take her to our HQ infirmary for now. Some of the soldiers escaped. She'll be more safer there." Magath said. Reiner nodded. "Pieck will stay with her while you tell me what the hell happend."
"Yes sir." Reiner said. He headed for HQ with Pieck and Galliard folowing.
AN: Don't worry. She'll be fine. Till next time.
