Chapter 5

Healing

Evelyn laid on the bed in the infirmary. The doctors were able to patch her shoulder up and she had bruises forming on her neck and face. Pieck was staying with her as Reiner sat with Porco and Zeke in Magath's office. She had promised to get Reiner when Evelyn woke up.

"Some of the soldiers had bruises and the leader had a good gash in the head. She didn't go down without a fight." Zeke said.

"Annie and I trained her in hand to hand combat training when we were in the Military." Reiner said. Magath looked surprise. She was top of her class with hand to hand along with her adopted sister. Doctor said that she only had that gunshot and a bruise under her eye and gonna be bruised around the neck. She passed out from being choked and loss of blood." Magath sighed.

"One of the soldiers we captured said that they wanted to send her back to the island in pieces." Zeke said.

"Some of the men escaped. I got some our soldiers looking for them. Reiner. I'll have a guard stand at your residence till we know they are all captured." Magath said. Reiner didn't look happy.

"We both can fight if needed. We don't need protecting." Reiner said.

"Its safety precaution. She is still a tool we need to get the Founder." Magath said. Reiner pinched his nose.

"What is she to you?" Galliard asked.

"Just a friend." Reiner said.

"You sure on that. You were pretty worried when she was taken." Galliard said. Reiner glared at Galliard. Reiner opened his mouth when a guard burst into the room.

"The girls awake." The guard said. Reiner was out of his seat and out the door before anyone could say anything else.

Evelyn woke up in a bright room. Her shoulder was hurting.

"Get Reiner. She's awake." Pieck said. Evelyn blinked a few times as She heard movement. "Evelyn?" She turned and saw Pieck sitting in a chair next to the bed.
"Pieck." Evelyn said. She tried to sit up and felt light headed a bit. Pieck handed her some water in a flask and she took a long drink.

"You had us all worried. Doctor said you passed out from the choking and the blood loss." Pieck said. The door opens and Reiner comes in.

"How did you guys find me?" Evelyn asked as Reiner came over.

"The gunshots made it obious where you were being held. They must of been weaklings if you were able to escape and hold on for so long. You put up a good fight." Reiner said. Evelyn looked at him.

"Well you did train me with Annie. So I did learn from the best." Evelyn said. Reiner smiled. Magath stepped in with Zeke.

"Good to see you awake Evelyn." Zeke said. Evelyn wouldn't look at her brother. It was still hard to wrap her head around that she had a brother in Marley.

"Did they say anything to you when you were being held?" Magath asked.

"One soldier didn't want to do it because I was protected by Reiner, but the Leader really didn't believe it. Then the leader told me as he he was choking me he ship me to Paradis in pieces and then go kill my friends. I know you guys hate us Islanders, but still." Evelyn said. Magath nodded.

"You've given us no trouble here. I still don't trust you, but you got Reiner and Pieck's trust." Magath said.

"Like I have no choice. There's no way I can get home and they probably think I'm dead." Evelyn said. Magath was shocked at her response. He saw pain and sadness in her eyes, but no hate for him or the Marleyans. She was trying to fit in. She made friends at the hospital and the patients were starting to warm up to her.

"I'll leave you guys be. Reiner. Pieck. You got the day off today. Its almost sunrise." Magath said. He walked out. Evelyn looked at Reiner.

"Do I have to stay here?" Evelyn said.

"No. I can take you home now, but Magath is having a guard at our place till all soldiers are found and your out of work for a week." Reiner said. Evelyn groaned.

"Great." Evelyn goes and gets up but nearly falls as she is still weak. Reiner wrapped his arm around her and got one on the back of her knees and picks her up Bridal style. "This is embarassing." She wraps her arms around Reiner's neck.

"It's either this or you stay here till you feel stronger." Reiner said with a chuckle. Evelyn laid her head on his shoulder as exhausten was creeping in on her.

"Just get me out of here." She whispered.

"I'll walk with you." Pieck said. Reiner left HQ with Pieck. It was was almost sunrise by the time they reached Reiner's home.

"I'll catch you guys later." Pieck said. Reiner looked at Evelyn and found her asleep. He carried her to her room and laid her on the bed. He puts a blanket over her and goes to leave.

"Reiner." Evelyn said. He looked at her. Her eyes were half open and closed. "Can you lay with me and sleep in here tonight. I just don't want to be left alone." Reiner nodded and got in the bed and laid next to her. He laid facing her as she turned to face him. "Thank you." Her eyes closed and she passed out. Reiner felt exhausten creep into his body and he passed out soon after.

Evelyn woke up hours later wrapped in someones arms and warmth on her back. Her back was pressed into someone's chest. She turned her head and found Reiner asleep behind her. The memory of last night being attacked came back and she asked Reiner to stay. She felt safe in his arms. She moved closer and felt his arms tighten around her. She closed her eyes to go back to sleep.

A crash came and Evelyn shot up. Reiner was awake also.

"Stay here." Reiner said as he was out of bed.

"And leave you to deal with idiots. I don't think so." Evelyn said, getting out of bed, but Reiner was out the door. Evelyn nearly stumbled as she tried to run after him. Gunshots ran out and a crash through the window came as a soldier landed in the room. Evelyn swore. The Soldier ran at her and she sidestepped him and grabbed his arm. She twisted it back till she heard a bone snap. The soldier screamed in pain. She kicked him in the head, knocking him out. Pieck came running in.

"Only one through the window." Evelyn said.

"They are gutsy today. Reiner and the others are finishing off the soldiers down below. Reiner had me come check on you when we heard the scream." Pieck said.

"Don't worry. It wasn't me. I broke his arm. A trick I learned from a Captain in the Survey Corps." Evelyn said. Reiner came in. Evelyn sighed in relief to see him Reiner grabbed the Soldier by his collar.

"Porco and I are taking them to be questioned. Pieck. Can you stay with Evelyn." Reiner said. Evelyn's stomach rumbled.

"Of course. I'll take her home to get some food. She can stay there till you come get her." Pieck said. Reiner gave her a grateful look.

"I'll be fine. Go." Evelyn said. Reiner started heading down the steps. Evelyn and Pieck follow and see Marleyan soldiers grabbing the soldiers. Some nodded at Evelyn and others glared. They left.

"Let's head to my house." Pieck said. Evelyn walked with Pieck towards Pieck's parents. Evelyn couldn't help but wonder as they walk if they caught them all and was she really safe here in Marley.
