Chapter 45: Restriction

Zuma was the first one in the elevator which was a bit unusual as Chase was almost always the first one to show. Rubble, Skye, and Wings then showed, taking their positions in the elevator. It wasn't very jarring to see Wings step up with them. He figured he was considered an associate member following his last visit to Adventure Bay, which he heard a very elaborate retelling from the pup himself a few days ago. However, it was jarring for them to be waiting on Chase.

Zuma took this time to lean over to Rubble. "Hey dude. Did you get any lead yet?"

The bulldog gave a very sad no with a shake of his head. "No, not at all. The same darn thing I've been getting for a few months. I'm starting to think that they're not in Adventure Bay at all."

Zuma was quick to point out. "Guess you finally have to tell him huh?"

Rubble nodded his head. "Yeah…I guess so. After the mission."

Zuma took note at the dead expression Rubble had. "Hey…..cheew up dude. We'll defiantly find them with Wydew's help."

"Maybe." Rubble whined as he dipped his head.

Feeling like there was nothing he could say to cheer the construction pup up, Zuma turned the other way to unfortunately see another depressing sight. Skye and Wings stood apart from each other not saying a word.

Zuma slowly lowered his head. Realizing the state of the Paw Patrol right now. One's gone, one's super late, one's injured, two of them seem to be mad at each other, one might as well not be there, and one is witnessing it all.

What has become of us?

"Guess who!"

A pup then emerged from the lookout's doors that Zuma never expected to see coming to the elevator so soon.

"Wocky!" Zuma called out in sync with Skye and Rubble.

Rocky gave a big smile as he got into the elevator. "The one and only."

"What awe you doing hewe? I thought you wewe stuck at Katie's." Zuma asked.

"Was, stuck at Katie's. But Ryder gave me the A-okay. So I'm back in action!" Rocky howled.

Zuma jumped up and howled along. "That's awesome dude!"

"Couldn't said it better myself pa…." Rocky then notices the pups standing next to Skye that he didn't recognize. He blatantly asked. "Uh….who are you?"

Wings looked over at the pup with a somewhat annoyed look. "I'm Wings. Skye's brother."

"Brother?" Rocky cocked his head in confusion. Looked at the still downed Skye. "Skye, you never told me you had a brother."

Skye replied in monotone. "Yeah Rocky. I have a brother. There."

Zuma was taken aback by this. It seemed that all the life was sucked out of both Skye and Wings. Did something happen during practice?

"Ooookay well, names Rocky. Nice to meet you. Now that's settled, we can finally get started."

As if a switch was pulled, Skye suddenly busts out of her monotone into sudden worry. "Wait, what about Chase? We're forgetting him!"

"Cool your jets, Skye. We don't need to worry about Chase." Rocky assured as he pressed the button on the elevator, sending them up.

"But, where is he?!" Skye asked further.

Her question wasn't answered as their pups packs came on. Zuma noticed that he was suited with his fire pup pack and helmet. He admittedly got excited about this. It wasn't very often that he'd get a chance to use his fire pup training he got from Marshall's parents a few months ago, let alone see any action at all.

He looked right and notably saw Skye him her medic pack on. Although, she didn't show the same excitement though. She was probably still worried about Chase despite Rocky's half-hearted assurance. It made him worry a little about Chase too. He's probably okay though like Rocky implied. He may even be at the top, waiting on them.

When the elevator reached the top, the pups all took their positions in front of Ryder, sitting up like always, ready for their mission. But Chase wasn't there.

It took a few seconds for Skye to utter the words in Chase's stead. "P-Paw Patrol ready for action Ryder, sir."

Ryder pushed a button on his pup pad and went on like nothing was off. "We've got a serious mission on our paws pups. There's a cabin out in the woods on fire and we need to put it out before it turns into a forest fire."

Skye couldn't help but pipe up. "Ryder, where's Chase?"

Ryder gave a smile to the cockapoo. "Chase is okay Skye. He's already on the scene. Waiting on us."

Skye was finally satisfied with that as she relaxed a little. Rocky commented, "See? Told you there was nothing to worry about."

"Okay pups. I don't have time to explain, because there's also two pups that need our help. One of them is trapped inside the cabin, so I'll get through this quickly."

Zuma had a sting of worry for the pups in peril, but he stood ready for the deployments.

Ryder swiped over to the fire emblem. "Of course, I need you Zuma with your fire pup skills to rescue the pup inside."

Zuma felt pride as he uttered his catchphrase. "Weady, set, get wet!"

Ryder then swiped over to Skye's tag. "Skye, I need your skills to help the other pup and you copter to transport em to Katie's to receive help from her."

"This puppy's gotta fly!" Skye let out with a trademark back flip.

"Rubble and Rocky, you both need to come as well. I may need your help."

The two gave a howl at their leader while Ryder looked at Wings. "I assume your willing to volunteer yourself Wings?"

Wings stepped up and did a backflip of his own. "I'll be a mighty help Ryder!"

"Alright, Paw Patrol is on a roll!" Ryder lets out, as he runs over to the poll, with the pups howling and bark in delight.

When Ryder finally got to the cabin, he was astonished at how the cabin was still standing, due to how much it had been taken over by the flames. He got off his ATV, took his helmet off and took charge immediately. Looking over at Zuma who drove Marshall's fire truck.

"Zuma! We need to subdue the flames before you can get in! Start dosing the flames with water!"

"Yes siw Wydew!" Zuma sounded off, as he pulled up as close as he could to the cabin and started to spray water on the cabin from the truck.

"Ryder! Ryder! Koff-koff-Over here!"

Ryder heard his pup Chase who was waving to get his attention, standing next to the downed pup. Ryder ran over to the pup with not only Skye, but Rubble as well. The bulldog got there faster than both of them as he suddenly screamed.

"Oh no! Skylar!"

Ryder was genuinely confused at the bulldog's sudden worry. "Rubble?"

Skye pushes him aside and began checking on her while Rubble was very hysterical, nearly spasming out. "How is she?! How is she?!"

"Give me a sec and I'll tell you Rubble!" Skye piped off as she went on with her checkup.

Ryder then pulls Rubble aside and tried to get him to calm down. "Rubble. Rubble! Calm down! What's gotten into you?"

"Ryder! That's Skylar! We've met her before! She was at Marshall's funeral!" Rubble hysterically let out.

Ryder looked over and with Rubble's context, was able to recognize the pup as the same one who nearly beat all his pups in Pup-Pup Boogie that night.

"I found her in the forest a few months ago, but then she disappeared! I've been looking for her for months Ryder!" Rubble cried.

Ryder noticed a particular tone coming from the bulldog. It was the same tone that either Skye or Chase would have whenever the other was in critical danger. That told him right there how much the construction pup cared for the pup.

Ryder looked over at the unconscious pup. "Skye, did you get anything yet?"

Skye turned around to meet Ryder. "She's alive Ryder, but barely. She breathed in so much smoke. We've got to get her to Katie's pronto!"

Ryder gave a nod. "Right Skye, you know what to do."

"I sure do Ryder." Skye yipped, as she ran over to her copter to prepare it for medical transport.

Rubble went back up to the Golden Retriever. "S-Skylar."

Ryder put a assuring hand on Rubble. "Don't worry Rubble. Skye will get her to Katie's as quick as she can, and she'll be okay. I promise."

All Rubble did was bow his head towards Skylar and whimper more.

Feeling like he did all he could, Ryder turned his attention to the cabin and how it faired thanks to the spraying from Marshall's fire truck. While he wasn't positive that it was completely safe, he knew that the pup trapped inside didn't have long. The flames at least have died a little.

He went over to the truck, where Zuma was still in the seat. "Okay Zuma. Are you ready to charge in?"

Zuma looked over to Ryder and swallowed. "I-I think so Wydew."

Ryder could feel the pup's nerves when he put an assuring hand on his paw. "It'll be okay Zuma. I'm not going to send you alone."

Skye then went up to him. "My copter is ready for transport Ryder."

"Right. Rocky!"

Rocky stepped up to his owner. "Yes Ryder?"

"I need you to go with Skye and keep an eye on Skylar's visuals until she gets her to Katie's." Ryder ordered.

Before Rocky could accept the order, Rubble sounded off. "Ryder! Let me go!"

"Eh? Let you go?" Ryder puzzled as he was caught off guard with that.

"Yes, please! Please let me go with Skylar!" Rubble insisted.

"But Rubble, I may need…"

"Ryder Please! You don't understand! I need to go with her!" Rubble was like a tornado trying to convince Ryder to let him go instead of Rocky.

Ryder was going to turn him down, but it was very clear to him that the bulldog was emotionally compromised. It would be dire if Ryder were to send him in with Zuma with his mind not on the mission at all.

"Okay Rubble. You can go if you really want to." Ryder conceded.

"Thank you, Ryder!" Rubble beamed. "You don't know how much this means to me."

"No I think I do." Ryder commented. "Go help Skye load her up."

Rubble gave a nod before he and Skye went over to Skylar. Ryder then turned his attention to Wings.

"Okay Wings, I guess I'm gonna need you to go in with Zuma." Ryder said.

Wings gave a sure nod. "I'm ready for anything Ryder!"

Ryder smiled as he looked over to Chase. "You're going in too Chase."

"Yes sir-Koff-koff-Ry-Ryder sir." Chase coughed.

Ryder was immediately put off by Chase's coughs. "Chase? You okay?"

"Yeah, I just…Koff-koff-ack!-Koff." Chase then had a coughing fit while addressing Ryder.

Ryder didn't need Skye's expertise to figure out what was up. He stiffened his look. "You went in, didn't you?"

Chase's eyes went wide before he had another coughing session. He then lowered his head in shame. "I-Koff-koff did Ryder sir."

Ryder couldn't believe that Chase would've disobeyed him like that. He was going to ridicule him, but he had no time for that. One thing for sure, he wasn't going in with Zuma. Not with him coughing up a storm every few minutes. The thing to do would be to send him with Skye, but the copter could only fit three pups barely, and there was no way he was going to get Ruble to not go with her. He figured that Chase would be alright if he kept an eye on him.

Against his better judgement, he's gonna have to send Rocky in with Zuma and Wings, even though he regulated Rocky to light duty.

"Rocky, you gonna have to go in with Zuma and Wings."

"But Ryder-Koff-koff-I can still…"

"Not a word from you, Chase." Ryder cut with a piercing finger.

Chase would've whined to oblivion had it not been for the cough he had.

Rocky went up to Ryder, showing the utmost bravery to him. Ryder kneeled to him. "You be very careful in there Rocky."

Rocky gave an assuring smirk. "I will Ryder. I promise."

Though it didn't do much to assure Ryder, he trusted Rocky, Zuma, and Wings enough to be satisfied. He went over to his ATV and got out the spare oxygen masks and turned to Zuma, Rocky, and Wings.

"Alright pups, here are your oxygen masks. They only have thirty minutes of oxygen along with yours Zuma, so keep that in mind."

The pups nod as Ryder gave Rocky and Wings their masks. As they were getting them on, Skye appeared.

"Ryder, Skylar's loaded up and ready to go!" Skye reported.

"Good Skye, get on over to Katie's. I'll let her know you're coming." Ryder responded, while pulling his pup pad out.

"Yes sir Ryder." Skye acknowledged, as she won't back over copter.

"And be careful!" Ryder yelped out as he called Katie.

"Ryder? What's going on?" Katie answered.

"I'm afraid I got some work for you Katie." Ryder began. "Skye's flying over to you with a pup in critical condition."

"Of-Of course Ryder. I'll get everything ready here." Katie answered with a stutter.

"Thanks Katie. Don't worry, it's not one of us for once." Ryder grinned.

Katie gave a sigh of relief before she hung up. Ryder then turned to Zuma, Rocky, and Wings who all had their masks on.

The masks themselves were actually a device Ryder developed. They didn't require a bulky tank to be carried around as the tank was in a secluded spot in the mask. The only downside was that it didn't have much oxygen due to how small it was.

"Are you all ready?" Ryder asked.

The pups gave a sure nod. "Ready Ryder!"

"Good. Please, be very careful in there. Let me know if anything happens if you can." Ryder stressed.

They give another nod as they all turned and made their way in the cabin. In time with Skye taking off with Skylar and Rubble.

Ryder suddenly got the same feeling he had a year ago when he watched Marshall go into City Hall. Luckily, the cabin was much smaller, and the flames have subdued a bit. Ryder hoped that his pups would be okay naturally, but also, he hoped that it wasn't too late for the pups that was trapped inside.

As soon as the pups got in, Zuma immediately recalled his training, and surveyed the area.

Due to the cabin being so small, they were only one or two rooms all in clear sight of them. It shouldn't take them long to search the cabin for the lost pup.

"Okay dudes, lets split up and covew the entiwe cabin. We'we suwe to find the pup if it's in hewe." Zuma proposed. "Yelp out if you find anyone."

Rocky and Wings gave a sure nod as they went off to different parts of the cabin. Zuma barked out his water cannon to subdue some of the flames while he searched the piles of debris for any sign of life. Turning over different pieces of wood and ash with his paws, slightly burning them in the process.

After a bit of searching, Zuma was suddenly stopped by a callout of his name.

"Zuma! Look out!"

A piece of the roof was falling down on him! Before he knew it, he felt a shove, being pushed out of the way by Rocky as the rubble pounded the ground, right where Zuma was standing. Zuma immediately got up with a shake as he looked for the mixed breed. Knowing who it was by the sound of his voice.

"Wocky! Wocky! Awe you okay?!" Zuma cried out with a slow heart.

Zuma then saw a figure getting up from the pile and pushing the pieces of wood off him. Luckily, Rocky wasn't directly under it, and only got a little piece of it.

"Huh. That didn't hurt nearly as I thought it would." Rocky let out with a shake, only to be engulfed in a big hug by Zuma.

"Wocky! Don't scawe me like that!"

Zuma let go as Rocky let out another comment.

"Even though you would've scared me more had I not pushed you?"

Zuma gave a slight chuckle. "Twue, twue, I guess we'we even then."

It seemed that Rocky was back to his normal self already, which warmed Zuma to his core.

"Guys! I think I found someone!"

Rocky and Zuma look over to where Wings was and ran over to him. They saw a pup laying on the ground, clearly unconscious.

To say that the pup looked bad would be an understatement. Anything Identifying the pup's breed was voided thanks to the many soot marks on him, coloring his fur in black. He looked to have a pack on, but it was hard to see due to the cabin being dark.

"Is he okay?" Rocky asked blatantly.

"I'm not much of an expert guys, but he looks pretty bad." Wings commented.

"We'll find out when we get him out of hewe!" Zuma let out as he proceeded to pick him up. "Help me Wings!"

Wings began to help Zuma pick the pup up, as Rocky invited them to put the pup on his back. Zuma and Wings fastened the pup on the mixed breed's back. "Got him Wocky?"

Rocky squirmed around a little. "Got him, pal."

"Good. Now let's get out of hewe!"

Chase sat in upmost shame as Ryder looked at the cabin not saying a word to him.

The shepherd hated being on Ryder's hit list. He always felt that he was the worst pup in the world if Ryder was even slightly disappointed with him. Even though he felt he had a good reason to disobey Ryder, it wasn't any excuse he could hide behind due to how dangerous it was.

Chase tipped toed over to Ryder. "R-Ryder? I..I didn't mean to…"

"I'll deal with you later Chase." Ryder said with a harsh stern. "You need to hush. To help your throat."

Chase whimpered in total despair. There was no other feeling he could have, that'll take his shame away. He murmurs out. "I'm so sorry Ryder sir…"

Then, a horrid sound came from the cabin, with a loud cracking boom, as half the cabin went down.

Chase's heart stopped as Ryder immediately went to his pup pad. However, the shepherd then spotted the three pups, emerging from the cabin, with one caring another on his back.

Ryder and Chase took off towards them as Rocky laid the pup down on his side. Ryder went down to check for vital signs as Chase gets a good look at him.

The pup was no doubt a Golden Retriever, almost identical to Skylar. He looked really bad, with soot and burn marks all over his body. Chase then noticed the rough looking pup pack he had on. Due to the soot and ash on it, it was a little hard to tell what color it was, but Chase then recognized the color as red. Then, he really recognized it, taking note of the robotic arm coming out of the pack.

No…..it can't be….can it?

"How is he Wydew!" Zuma asked.

Ryder didn't say anything as he suddenly had a wide expression on his face. He then shakingly got his pup pad out and called Skye.

"Ryder?! What's up?!"

Ryder responded with a cold and soft voice. "Skye? When you get to Katie's, ask her for a body bag and come back here."

A huge gasp came out of the pups around him. That can only mean one thing.

Skye was admittedly shaken a little. "O-Okay R-Ryder."

Ryder then hung up and didn't move an inch.

"R-Ryder. You-You don't mean that…"

"Yes Rocky. I'm afraid so. We were too late for him." Ryder placed a hand on the pup's head and petted it soothingly. "I'm sorry little fella."

Neither pup could say or move a muscle. It was rare for a mission like this to happen and it was extremely rear for a situation like this to happen, as in it has happened one time before where the Paw Patrol would lose a teammate, or a victim. Zuma whimpered in sadness while Wings bowed his head.

However, it was Rocky who pointed out the glaring thing that was overlooked. "Hey, isn't that Marshall's pup pack?"

Everyone's attention snapped to the busted pup pack. Chase saw Ryder tense a bit as he looked over the pack.

"So….you've noticed it too." Chase cut. "I was -koff-koff-gonna ask the same thing."

"It-It can't be. Right?" Wings said. "Are you sure it's his."

Even though Chase knew without a doubt that it was one of Ryder's pup packs, he saw Ryder reach into a particular pocket on the vest part. He pulled out what looked to be a piece of paper. Chase got closer and saw what it was. His eyes grew wide when he recognized it was a picture of him and Marshall after their first mission. The picture he lost when he totaled his car. He had no idea where Marshall kept his copy of it until now.

"It is. It's Marshall's pup pack." Ryder confirmed with a stunned expression.

Chase suddenly had fury built up inside him. "What's he, doing with it?"

"I have no earthly idea, Chase." Ryder said, as he processed everything.

Chase then notices that Zuma was the only one without a shocked look on his face. He thought to immediately to interrogate. "Zuma? What do you-koff-know?"

Zuma yiped in response as if he was called on in class. "Wh-wha-me?"

"You're the only one here that's not surprised to see the pack." Chase pointed out with a growl. "Did you know about this?"

Zuma clenched at Chase's intimidation. "I…I…I"

"Tell us!" Chase barked, causing him to immediately have a coughing fit after.

Rocky stepped in front of Zuma with a growl at Chase. "Lay off of him Chase!"

Chase was going to bark back, until he felt Ryder's hand on his shoulder. "You are the last pup to control this conversation."

"But Ryder…"

"Zip it Chase!" Ryder ordered with authority as Chase growled a little before he sat down in defeat.

Ryder then turns his attention to the lab. Making sure to not sound as intimidating as Chase was. "Now, Zuma, if you know something, now would be the time to speak up. Do you know how this pup got a hold of this pup pack?"

Zuma gave a big gulp before he spoke. "I…I don't know how he got it, but…I sowta knew he did. Wubble told me about a week ago that he found Skylaw and hew bwothew with Marshall's pup pack on."

Ryder looked at him with suspicion. "Annnd you didn't tell me becauuuuuse….."

"Wubble told me not to tell you. Because he wanted to find them and get it back on his own." Zuma added with a whimper. "I'm sowwy Wydew."

Ryder closed his eyes and drew a breath. "It's okay Zuma. The spotlight isn't on you. Though with something like this, you need to tell me, no matter what Rubble thinks."

Zuma whimpered his head down. "Yes Wydew."

Ryder petted Zuma before he rose to his feet. Wings then asks the question. "What does this mean Ryder?"

"I don't know, but one thing for sure. We've got to get this fire put out, so let's hop to it!"

Dally knew he shouldn't have ran away from Chase like that, especially in a dire situation; but his mind was set on getting away because of the shepherd's yelling and his fear overtaking him.

He wanted to be away from the fire as far as he could. It reminded him of the painful memory of being inside that burning building with no one coming to help him.

Course if he'd never went into the cabin in the first place, he wouldn't have been in that mess. The pup cried that her brother was trapped inside, he was practically pulled to the cabin like a magnet. Like he had to go save the pup or he wouldn't feel good about himself. But once he got in there, that feeling went away, and he ended up being in peril himself. Had it not been for Chase snapping him out of it, his tail would be toast right now.

When he saw his house, he ran over to it. Wanting nothing more than Stacy's comfortless. Though the running made him have a coughing fit before he went through the doggie door, still catching his breath a little.

"Oh, there you are Dally."

Dally wagged with delight, running up to her in the living room. "Stacy! You're home!"

"I sure am, and you look like you need a bath mister." The girl commented, noticing the black marks on the pups fur.

"Oh yes! I definitely could use-Koff-koff-koff-koffack!" Out of nowhere, Dally had a painful set of coughs that felt like his lungs were going to launch out of his mouth.

"Dally!" Stacy let out as dropped to a knee to him. "Are you okay?!"

"Yeah-Koff-koff-koff-I'm okay!" Dally shrugged, not wanting Stacy to be stressed about him.

"Not to me you are. Your breathing is raspy and…" Stacy then notices a smell that nearly made her cough. "You smell like soot and ash? Dally what happened to you?"

Dally was instantly nervous, afraid that Stacy would be mad at him like Chase was. "Well you see….I….um…..I." His anxiety prevented him from speaking.

"Dally, tell me, please." Stacy begged, concern leaking from her body.

"There…..there was this cabin in the forest, that was…..on fire.."

"Fire?!" Stacy yelped.

"Y-yeah. Chase and I discovered it not far from here…" Dally added.

"Chase was with you?" Stacy suddenly had a low and cold voice that put Dally off a bit.

He nodded. "Yes. Ch-Chase was with me, and there was another pup who needed help. So….I-I went in to save him…but….I ended up having to be saved by Chase."

Dally let out another string of coughs as Stacy didn't say a word. He noticed that a look of distaste had washed over her. "S-Stacy? If your-Koff-koff-mad at me, I'm sorry. I'll never do it again."

Stacy still didn't say anything, but she got up and turned away from Dally. Resting herself on a nearby tall table, as if she was contemplating something.

Dally was now more scared than ever. "S-Stacy?"

After a few moments of silence, Stacy finally responded. Her voice was stone cold. "Dally? Before I say this, I want you to know that I love you so much, and I'm only doing this for your own good."

Now Dally was really scared. Scared that he was going to get yelled at again; but nothing could've prepared him for what ended up coming out of Stacy's mouth.

"Dally, as of this day forward, you are not allowed to spend time with Chase."

That statement was a cold gunshot, straight through Dally's heart. "Wh-Wh-Wh-What?" Dally croaked.

"That pup is no good. He will only get you hurt Dally." Stacy added, her voice dropping more in temperature.

Dally was stunned. "But-But….it wasn't his fault…."

"I don't care whose fault it was!" Stacy exploded, nearly blowing Dally off his feet. "That pup will get you killed! Along with his owner!"

Tears filled Dally's eyes. He couldn't believe what his owner was saying. "But…Stacy. He's my only friend."

"Not anymore! I mean it Dally. If I ever see or even feel that you were near that pup ever again, there will be restrictions, do I make myself clear?"

Dally was very close to breaking down. "St-St-Stacy. He-He could help me. He could help me ge-get my me-m-memories back."

Stacy slowly turned her head to her pup. Her eyes gazing like an owl in the dead of night. "Dally, I'm not going to say it again. You are much better off without him. End.of.story."

That did it. Dally finally realized how serious Stacy was about this.

"Bu…bu….bu…St..St….Stacy….I….I….Iteh...teh….te…the….t…TWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!"

Dally exploded into tears like a volcano, running up the stairs to his room. He collapsed on his bed, crying his ever-loving eyes out.

He couldn't understand. In fact, he'll never understand. Stacy's displeasure of Chase came out of nowhere and blindsided him. In a critical moment to. Chase had just told him who he really was, and he was so excited to join the Paw Patrol. There, he would've found his real life, and belong somewhere. But now that has been squashed into a million pieces.

But what hurt the most was that Chase was the best friend in the world. He cherished his friendship even if he kept his identity a secret. Chase was a pup like none other but now he was banned from ever seeing him again. His only friend he's ever had in his life. Dally felt that not only his memories were fading, but his true happiness was shot and killed in front of him.

Dally cried and yowled himself into a very sad, depressing sleep.

(A/N): Well, if you didn't hate Stacy then, I'm sure you loathe her now!

It seems Stacy is finally cracking down hard and is trying to keep Dally away from Chase. She should've done this earlier but I guess it's better late than never.

Unfortunately for her, Ryder's not going to give up easily. Not when his pup is involved. What will happen when Chase finds out about Dally's restriction and will Dally be able to come home?
